W Somerset Maugham is an excellent story teller. His books are a joy to read. I would recommend ordering from library . He was actually involved in the intelligence service during the 1st World was.

A great writer and British patriot. Probably in WW2 as well.

I'm certain that the narrator is Alex Jennings. Many won't recognise the name but most will recognise his face. He's a well known and very prolific character actor.
Probably best known for his portrayal as King Edward VIII/Duke of Windsor in THE CROWN and Prince Charles in THE QUEEN.
He also played JOHN ASHENDEN in the 4 x 1 hour episodes of ASHENDEN, 1991 (I only learned of it now whilst checking Alex Jennings IMDB page.
Joss Ackland, Ian Bannen and [a 28 year old] Jason Isaacs co-star, so I'm determined to find and watch them. I couldn't understand how I'd not seen them, I've always loved this kind of spy drama. Then I saw that they were broadcast every Sunday from Nov 17th to Dec 8th.

Ashenden deserves far more credit, as does W Somerset Maugham.
Graham Greene, John le Carre and even Ian Fleming all built their creations on the foundations first firmly set down by W Somerset Maugham with Ashenden.
Maugham also worked for the nascent MI6, in Russia, during WWI, including the momentous year of 1917, which had two revolutions.
WSM Is mentioned more than once in RUSSIAN ROULETTE by Giles Milton. Arthur Ransome played an even more important role, but for which side is still hotly debated.

The narrator sounds a bit like David Niven. Well done, old chap!

Awful music scattered through out this which has no bearing on the atmosphere created by the brilliant narrator.

@muftydog, unfortunately it's an affliction common to many on UA-cam. I'm led to believe that it's some form of copyright avoidance.

Do you mean Elgar's Symphony no. 1? I think it's appropriate.

this was originally a book at bedtime in 15 minute episodes so the music marks the end/beginning of each section.
