I can tell this was a lot of effort. Its awesome how you were able to sort of bring these concepts to life thru editing in footage of similar ideas. I've never even heard of this pitch and that's saying something b/c as a long time Metroid fan, I've kind of heard it all; I even remember reading articles on the cancellation of Dread years ago. This pitch seems like it'd be too ambitious for either the Gamecube or the Wii and would have been cut down regardless of being greenlit or not. Nice to see that they didn't get rid of all of their ideas for this game though.
Well I do think to do this in a year would have been super ambitious, but the GameCube should have been able to do this minus some of the co-op multiplayer as it might tax the system ab it. That and the online modes. I do think it should have became Metroid Prime Hunters personally.
Most of these ideas, at least partially, have been used in some way actually, which I think is neat. The powered down ship being a side area in Prime 3, the emotion shifting AI being a possible inspiration for Ghor, and the visuals of the ship and some of the leftover enemies seem to have been utilized in the city area in Prime 2. Which I think is kinda cool to look at in retrospect. :D That said, I really hope the whole assimilation thing and mecha Samus get used somewhere, I love those ideas so much x)

That Metroid Prime 1.5 pitch sounds it would've been a really great game in the end had they considered it. I think the real reason why it rejected was because the technology just wasn't there yet to pull off such a concept, especially if they were to decide to expand upon and make some changes to make it more appropriate for a proper Metroid game. Basically, I think the reasons were the same as why Dread was scrapped originally. Hopefully, they decided to bring it back for Prime 4, or at least take a lot more inspiration and notes from it than they did for Prime Hunters and Prime 3: Corruption. If they can revive Dread, they can revive this Prime 1.5 concept in some form too.
Honestly if this got revived as MP4, I'd be quite happy. I would wish it would be bigger than though and rather the side of a full Metroid Prime game. But since it is looking like Sylux might be in MP4, who knows lol
I think a lot of things in this pitch were rather stupid, but it also has some amazing ideas. I can see why they didn't go with it but also wish they'd use its cooler ideas as a sort of blue print for the future perhaps. One stupid thing is how TF the AI could copy Chozo tech like the Morph Ball when the Federation can't with Samus's full cooperation. Also, coop in a Metroid game guts the Metroid experience
@@flightlesschicken7769 I don't think it was established yet that the Federation has issues reproducing Chozotech. Plus, one could easily justify literally everything happening with dimensiontravel and the unknown amount of time the ship has been around for. While brainstorming, I even just thought "hey, wouldn't that work for getting cut content(such as unused enemies, etc)from other games in there too?" Like for example, what if the AI randomly came across dark aether and just decided to kidnap a few ing for their data, among other things?
@@lpfan4491 I mean it has definitely been shown that the Federation can't replicate Chozo tech. First off, if they could, they would. We would see special forces in power suits with some of Samus' abilities. Second in Federation Force they needed to use giant mechs to mimic just a very small fraction of the Power Suit's abilities. Third, although I am not sure I accept Other M as canon because how it contradicts everything else, in Other M the special forces unit has a giant gun that takes a long time to charge up that is supposed to replicate her Plasma beam. That weapon is Infinity worse than her plasma beam due to its long charge up time and easy over heating

A lot of stuff from this pitch made it into Prime Hunters. For example, the final area in the campaign is a space ship that was hiding in another dimension.
Which is amazing really considering it was NST that made that game and not Retro. Makes one think that they maybe got that pitch to look over as an idea they could use and reworked it.
Well, Retro Studios did apparently help the team a little bit, so perhaps the people at NST heard about that scrapped idea from them and decided to implement it into their game.
It´s easy to see that somem of the design language was taken from early concept art over to Prime 2. The Grey color and red glowing eyes. Mechanical environments than ended up becoming the Sanctuary Fortress probably. Makes sense to use what was already there considering the fact that Prime 2 was made in a short crunchtime. For the other ideas: they all sound awesome but also like the devs got a little too crazy. The ideas are easily enough for 2 or 3 games which i guess is what ended up happening. They took a lot of that 1.5 Phase to make Hunters and Echoes. I like the idea of a Prime game taking place entirely on a spaceship. Although Planets give a different feeling of exploration. I am excited to see what setting we will see in Prime 4 and if some of these ideas will surface back again. Nice video!
I was SO looking forward to this. Been super hyped seeing all the community posts. Even with what I know of there series, I've seen these concept arts before but didn't know about the pitch they were associated with. This was great!

I like how you can feel the influence this pitch had on future games over the years. The enemies stealing her abilities and using them against her in Prime 2, the Hunters with their own pseudo-morph ball abilities in Hunters, cooperating with other bounty hunters in Corruption, even co-op with big mechs made it into Federation Force. The "capture the criminal" mode sounds pretty much exactly like the Star Wars Bounty Hunter game with Jango Fett.
The pitch definitely had an impact on future games considering Prime 2 uses a bunch of it (as i'll plan to point out in Part 2) and a ton of it in Hunters (unless that was by pure coincidence). I actually didn't think of the Federation Force connection there with the Chozo bots, good catch! Ooh I should play that Star Wars Bounty Hunter game as this sounded hella fun (also seems I picked the correct movie series as a backdrop for its artistic rendition XD)
I think it's about time I finally play this game. My brother and I got it when we were kids and I was too scared to play it at the time. I always got this feeling it was a "big kid" game and that I didn't have the skill to beat it.
The game definitely can be daunting for a child I imagine. I played it as a teenager, so I was already a little more use to bigger puzzle adventures with darker themes
I’ve had the game since I was a kid and only beat it last summer. Absolutely loved it! It’s long, challenging, and builds on the same elements that made the first one great
Given the partial overlap between some of these ideas and Hunters, it would be interesting to see a remake of Hunters that uses some more of these concepts to flesh things out more. In particular, the idea of Gorea having the sort of split/conflicting personalities, and the ability to remotely communicate with and mess with Samus and the other Hunters. (Almost compulsively putting up these challenges and obstacles in their way despite wanting to lead them to the octoliths to free itself.) And all the drones and messed-up crossbreeds being like, the lingering results of the Alimbics' conflict with Gorea, though some spicy uncertainty about just which side was responsible for creating them. Though those mutiplayer party games sound kinda fun, but hilariously out of tune with Metroid's usual vibes. I have to wonder what the fanbase reaction would have been if all that had come to fruition.
I’d like to see elements of this pitch make it into Prime 4. Co-op, side missions, multiplayer with other hunters. All possible with the Switch’s hardware to include that along with the (hopefully bigger) single player campaign. With the whole trade off about wether or not to download power ups and risk stronger enemies, it makes me think of a rogue-lite mode. (Kinda like Risk of Rain 2) Hunters and federation force showed that sort of thing was possible already. I’d love to see Sylux, Trace, and Weavel again.
Federation Force and MP3 did already make a major point that Sylux is returning so maybe we will get the whole squadron of Hunters back and in co-op multiplayer too. Yeah the risk to download power ups i'm not so much a fan of myself, i'd rather see it done in a traditional sense... at least for Samus. Other Hunters can download from Samus instead.
The video was great! As prime 2 is my favourite metroid game I am really looking forward to watching this even though I know quite about the mad AI stuff

Back when I was younger I saw a minecraft video that had shodan’s face in it and i didn’t think much about it until i saw this video when you were talking about the ai I thought that shodan looked a bit scary and since you mentioned system shock 1&2 I thought it was related to bioshock. After the video I did some research and now it is one of my most favourite games of all time

This was a really cool concept, too ambitious.. great analysis as always. We will probably see these concepts return again, maybe not as a Metroid game but somewhere else. Metroid Prime 2 had its own Lithium forum to promote it, a spin-off of the Nsider boards, it was invite only.
Well some of it did technically make it into future Metroid games (unless it was by pure coincidence), but yeah MP2's marketing was pretty nuts with the forums being one of the wacky methods to it.
I wish this was Metroid Prime 2. I've always wanted split screen couch co-op in a Metroid game. I hope someday we get a multiplayer mode as flushed out as the one in this pitch. All the different and unique modes sound incredible.
Hopefully since many Prime games after did use some of it (unless it was by pure coincidence). Since Sylux looks like he is coming back, maybe we might see some things more?
I mean MP2 is one of my favorite games of all time but I almost wish this had been the final product. It is interesting to see how the various parts of this game made it in Echoes, Hunters, and Corruption though. Who knows, maybe some parts from this will be recycled into MP4 as well?
@@TheObsessiveGamer I could also be misremembering this, but I thought it was said that this pitch was originally named Metroid Dread a couple years back. It could've just been speculation on the fans part that the two games were related in some way because of information on both was kinda leaked and cancelled at the same time. Unfortunately I can't seem to find the video that I saw originally discussing this because of the recent Dread news drowning out almost everything else metroid related. We also don't know the story outline for dread yet other than the fact samus is being hunted down by AI in some sort of facilities or ship. Which draws some parallels to this scrapped idea. But who knows? Will just have to wait and see.
Sounds really amazing ideas , the feedback for upgrading is an thing to be considered, few games play with that , the hunters presence would make the adventure more organic too .
I hope they bring some of the scrapped concepts to Prime 4. Mainly, the Multiplayer and coop modes, meele attack, the heavier focus on puzzles. Heck, the mother AI sounds more interesting as a companion than Adam.
@@TheObsessiveGamer id like to think the developers of prime 4 are working close with other companies like mercury when it comes to story and what ideas they can work with it's smart if they did cause I'm sure they worked together to make both there visions work in the story and setting

Honestly this would be fantastic in HD, but I imagine some work would be needed to adapt it to console. From 2 screens to 1 screen, and touch controls to controller
@@TheObsessiveGamer True! It doesn't necessarily have to be a Hunters sequel, but a competitive Metroid FPS with online battles could be a cool alternative to Splatoon. Maybe Prime 4 could offer such modes, like Prime 2's multiplayer only more expansive.
@@shadowledastray I would hope Prime 4 could do so. I really would love to see its online multiplayer be so good that it becomes a popular thing like Splatoons became and stand up to other FPS multiplayer modes too.
If they would've went with this concept, it would have no doubt been the best metroid game. Man, I really hope they use some of the ideas they had with 1.5 in prime 4 like the AI antagonist sounds fucking amazing.

You know, many of these elements sound very interesting for a game, let alone a Metroid. However, as you went into more detail about the hunters and evil samus, I am actually thankful that we ended up getting the game that we did.
Yeah honestly am glad with what we got. It might work if it's a new story or a side game, but for the story of Metroid Prime/Dark Samus that it was to tell, it wouldn't have fit in well.
6:54 More like Shodan actually, even has a similar artificial personality and was even mentioned as being similar in the pitch. I really don't see how this AI was at all like HAL aside from them being an AI and being an antagonist. I will admit I didn't see the full movie for A Space Odessey but the scene I do know about with HAL seems to be more about HAL being inflexible with orders that went against the directives he was previously given, and was pretty much emotionless.
I know this is really early, but the newest trailer has these robotic chozo enemies that have samus's abilities, which have very similar concepts to what you said about how when you get more abilities, they get stronger as well... I'm so hyped... But also dreading the next metroid game!!!
@@TheObsessiveGamer It does, considering that they raised her, how I mean the main point is that metalicness of the enemies in a ship resembles a lot of the cut content you described.
Oh please let Samus have time control powers in Prime 4 it's so perfect for puzzles and theme and also combat depth... look at the game Timeshift for example... also hope for dual stick aiming maybe like prime 3 and precision hits for even better skill based combat but most importantly good weapon balance.

Not with those controls. Lock on shooting and fast movement bursts are not skill based and don't really work on pvp if not on a really casual level. Unfortunately gamecube had a really small right stick that was not designed to be used as an aiming stick
Good thing riot squad got cancelled as a multiplayer mode. It would be fun but it would feel extremely out of character for Samus. I would pay 60 dollars for just that extract the criminal game though, it sounds amazing 😭😭
Well the documentation did state that it would have been Bounty Hunters you'd play as, so may they were referring to the others rather than Samus here?
I won't be surprised if some of the story elements have gotten reused over time such as Bounty Hunters in MP: Hunters and MP3. So I would hope more get used for future Metroid games
@@TheObsessiveGamer This is information, i hadn't known. I figured if they used any Quake engine at the time it'd be IDtech 3 or Quake 3's Engine, how interesting. I always say there is a bit of Quake DNA in every FPS out there, but Metroid? it never crossed my mind. Learn something new.

Despite Prime 2 being my favourite Metroid game, I would sacrifice it or any other single game in the whole series just to have this game become a reality, such a missed opportunity.
This sounds both amazing and stupid at the same time. I can genuinely see why they didn't go with this idea, but at the same time I want to know what ir would have been like if it got green lit. One of the most stupid things is how the AI can copy the morph ball. Something the Federation couldn't do with Samus's full cooperation
I mean the AI was something out of this world (literally), so it's possible the story could have even developed to show it has some knowledge of Chozo science on it too in order to do so? Cause the document definitely didn't say why this ship existed in the first place. But yeah I would have liked this as a side game at least to see what it could have been.

(I can already imagine the first five mini games could be as competitive as Halo or COD but better obviously imo, and yes I also hope that MP4 being MP1.5 but expanded as well.)
Maybe too crazy for a Prime 4. A Prime 5 on the other hand...Okay seriously, I would love to see this but it needs to be toned down. It's drowning in ideas and feels a bit lost at times. Focusing on the best stuff like co-op, map design, the story with the AI, and the item progression system and scrapping a few really out there ones (riot control?) could get this game released.

I think it's about time I finally play this game. My brother and I got it when we were kids and I was too scared to play it at the time. I always got this feeling it was a "big kid" game and that I didn't have the skill to beat it.
The game definitely can be daunting for a child I imagine. I played it as a teenager, so I was already a little more use to bigger puzzle adventures with darker themes
I’ve had the game since I was a kid and only beat it last summer. Absolutely loved it! It’s long, challenging, and builds on the same elements that made the first one great

Could very well be and i'd welcome an expanded take on this especially. The multiplayer and co-op in this era would be absolutely beautiful
Given the partial overlap between some of these ideas and Hunters, it would be interesting to see a remake of Hunters that uses some more of these concepts to flesh things out more. In particular, the idea of Gorea having the sort of split/conflicting personalities, and the ability to remotely communicate with and mess with Samus and the other Hunters. (Almost compulsively putting up these challenges and obstacles in their way despite wanting to lead them to the octoliths to free itself.)
And all the drones and messed-up crossbreeds being like, the lingering results of the Alimbics' conflict with Gorea, though some spicy uncertainty about just which side was responsible for creating them.
Though those mutiplayer party games sound kinda fun, but hilariously out of tune with Metroid's usual vibes. I have to wonder what the fanbase reaction would have been if all that had come to fruition.
I’d like to see elements of this pitch make it into Prime 4. Co-op, side missions, multiplayer with other hunters. All possible with the Switch’s hardware to include that along with the (hopefully bigger) single player campaign.
With the whole trade off about wether or not to download power ups and risk stronger enemies, it makes me think of a rogue-lite mode. (Kinda like Risk of Rain 2)
Hunters and federation force showed that sort of thing was possible already. I’d love to see Sylux, Trace, and Weavel again.
Federation Force and MP3 did already make a major point that Sylux is returning so maybe we will get the whole squadron of Hunters back and in co-op multiplayer too. Yeah the risk to download power ups i'm not so much a fan of myself, i'd rather see it done in a traditional sense... at least for Samus. Other Hunters can download from Samus instead.
An A.I. that went mad and gameplay with horror elements definitely sounds a lot like Metroid Dread. Maybe this pitch was the inspiration for it?
Metroid Dreads premise was planned just a few years after and the ideas of this did influence Mp2, MP3 and Hunter's, so maybe so

Back when I was younger I saw a minecraft video that had shodan’s face in it and i didn’t think much about it until i saw this video when you were talking about the ai I thought that shodan looked a bit scary and since you mentioned system shock 1&2 I thought it was related to bioshock. After the video I did some research and now it is one of my most favourite games of all time

This was a really cool concept, too ambitious.. great analysis as always. We will probably see these concepts return again, maybe not as a Metroid game but somewhere else.
Metroid Prime 2 had its own Lithium forum to promote it, a spin-off of the Nsider boards, it was invite only.
Well some of it did technically make it into future Metroid games (unless it was by pure coincidence), but yeah MP2's marketing was pretty nuts with the forums being one of the wacky methods to it.
I wish this was Metroid Prime 2. I've always wanted split screen couch co-op in a Metroid game. I hope someday we get a multiplayer mode as flushed out as the one in this pitch. All the different and unique modes sound incredible.

I mean MP2 is one of my favorite games of all time but I almost wish this had been the final product. It is interesting to see how the various parts of this game made it in Echoes, Hunters, and Corruption though. Who knows, maybe some parts from this will be recycled into MP4 as well?
@@TheObsessiveGamer I could also be misremembering this, but I thought it was said that this pitch was originally named Metroid Dread a couple years back. It could've just been speculation on the fans part that the two games were related in some way because of information on both was kinda leaked and cancelled at the same time. Unfortunately I can't seem to find the video that I saw originally discussing this because of the recent Dread news drowning out almost everything else metroid related. We also don't know the story outline for dread yet other than the fact samus is being hunted down by AI in some sort of facilities or ship. Which draws some parallels to this scrapped idea. But who knows? Will just have to wait and see.

Sounds really amazing ideas , the feedback for upgrading is an thing to be considered, few games play with that , the hunters presence would make the adventure more organic too .
I hope they bring some of the scrapped concepts to Prime 4. Mainly, the Multiplayer and coop modes, meele attack, the heavier focus on puzzles. Heck, the mother AI sounds more interesting as a companion than Adam.

Random: As popular as online multiplayer FPSs are, im surprised we haven't seen a new Metroid Prime Hunters game on an HD console.
Honestly this would be fantastic in HD, but I imagine some work would be needed to adapt it to console. From 2 screens to 1 screen, and touch controls to controller
@@TheObsessiveGamer True! It doesn't necessarily have to be a Hunters sequel, but a competitive Metroid FPS with online battles could be a cool alternative to Splatoon. Maybe Prime 4 could offer such modes, like Prime 2's multiplayer only more expansive.
@@shadowledastray I would hope Prime 4 could do so. I really would love to see its online multiplayer be so good that it becomes a popular thing like Splatoons became and stand up to other FPS multiplayer modes too.
If they would've went with this concept, it would have no doubt been the best metroid game. Man, I really hope they use some of the ideas they had with 1.5 in prime 4 like the AI antagonist sounds fucking amazing.
Given what we got for technology now... this would be amazing as either it's own I:P or a successor to Dread in a prime-style type of gameplay. I hope they didn't get rid of this completely.
You know, many of these elements sound very interesting for a game, let alone a Metroid. However, as you went into more detail about the hunters and evil samus, I am actually thankful that we ended up getting the game that we did.
Yeah honestly am glad with what we got. It might work if it's a new story or a side game, but for the story of Metroid Prime/Dark Samus that it was to tell, it wouldn't have fit in well.
6:54 More like Shodan actually, even has a similar artificial personality and was even mentioned as being similar in the pitch. I really don't see how this AI was at all like HAL aside from them being an AI and being an antagonist. I will admit I didn't see the full movie for A Space Odessey but the scene I do know about with HAL seems to be more about HAL being inflexible with orders that went against the directives he was previously given, and was pretty much emotionless.

I know this is really early, but the newest trailer has these robotic chozo enemies that have samus's abilities, which have very similar concepts to what you said about how when you get more abilities, they get stronger as well... I'm so hyped... But also dreading the next metroid game!!!
Makes one wonder if they could have taken some inspiration (though Chozo's having Samus' ability makes sense)

Oh please let Samus have time control powers in Prime 4 it's so perfect for puzzles and theme and also combat depth... look at the game Timeshift for example... also hope for dual stick aiming maybe like prime 3 and precision hits for even better skill based combat but most importantly good weapon balance.
I imagine with the Switch's control scheme we'll have dual analogue control or at least the motion controls for free form aiming.

Not with those controls. Lock on shooting and fast movement bursts are not skill based and don't really work on pvp if not on a really casual level. Unfortunately gamecube had a really small right stick that was not designed to be used as an aiming stick
Good thing riot squad got cancelled as a multiplayer mode. It would be fun but it would feel extremely out of character for Samus. I would pay 60 dollars for just that extract the criminal game though, it sounds amazing 😭😭
Well the documentation did state that it would have been Bounty Hunters you'd play as, so may they were referring to the others rather than Samus here?

I won't be surprised if some of the story elements have gotten reused over time such as Bounty Hunters in MP: Hunters and MP3. So I would hope more get used for future Metroid games

Despite Prime 2 being my favourite Metroid game, I would sacrifice it or any other single game in the whole series just to have this game become a reality, such a missed opportunity.
This sounds both amazing and stupid at the same time. I can genuinely see why they didn't go with this idea, but at the same time I want to know what ir would have been like if it got green lit.
One of the most stupid things is how the AI can copy the morph ball. Something the Federation couldn't do with Samus's full cooperation
I mean the AI was something out of this world (literally), so it's possible the story could have even developed to show it has some knowledge of Chozo science on it too in order to do so? Cause the document definitely didn't say why this ship existed in the first place.
But yeah I would have liked this as a side game at least to see what it could have been.

(I can already imagine the first five mini games could be as competitive as Halo or COD but better obviously imo, and yes I also hope that MP4 being MP1.5 but expanded as well.)

Maybe too crazy for a Prime 4. A Prime 5 on the other hand...Okay seriously, I would love to see this but it needs to be toned down. It's drowning in ideas and feels a bit lost at times. Focusing on the best stuff like co-op, map design, the story with the AI, and the item progression system and scrapping a few really out there ones (riot control?) could get this game released.
Yeah I don't think I would want this for MP4. Heck I think it should be used for a Metroid Prime Hunters 2 rather since Bounty Hunters were the focus again.

You know hearing about the game of the title Metroid Prime 1.5 and all of its concept ideas of the story of the game, Retro Studios should bring it back after finish making Metroid Prime 4 and rename the cancel game Metroid Prime Disorder.
