The opening moments of Silent Hill 1 is not only iconic for the series and the horror genre in general but for a new IP it shows just how much Silent Hill was capable of as a horror game that creeped and scared people out of their pants showing there's something really special about that game for those brave enough to conquer those nightmares.
The Silent Hill series is possibly some of my favorites in the Survival Horror genre next to Resident Evil I'm glad to see our guy cover this franchise after he did cover the Resident Evil series, keep on trucking dude.

Thank you very much my dude. And honestly yeah, I feel it was well ahead of its time in how it presented the game. It didn't seem like something possible on the PS1 (maybe even the era at all), yet we got this revolutionary game to the genre.
I still find it far scarier than REs ever could be with how the nightmare sections goes. I still remember when the school area finished. It really felt like I woke up from a nightmare (especially with those church bells going)

@@TheObsessiveGamer True it's why it's a classic not to mention probably one of the earliest open world setting in a game of it's era or just the idea of the scale of walking around a small town that feels like what you would expect aside from the monsters and abandonment of the location.

i hope the gray child and Larval Stalker gets modded back in via patch, or better yet, like the Puppet Doctor/Nurse, make it that it spawns both versions as variants.
This was an era where it was taboo for kids to die in movies or video games, like Zombie kids. So they "toned" down the Graychild/Larval Stalker.
Personally i find the Beta GrayChild Spookier, kinda looks like a small version of the Zelda64 ReDeads, and we all know how much that creature puts the FEAR in us.
Edit: Also i like the Puppet Doctor with the glasses on. They should have included it.

I really enjoyed this one and hope you start a Silent Hill series here. Glad you made it clear from the start that one of the designers is not the Naoto Oshima from Sonic lol. So many people mix this up. It's most unfortunate that Silent Hill went, from a commercial standpoint, downhill after the first game. The second game was expensive and didn't break even for a long time for Konami and was hated by the japanese audience. The third game wasn't also financially that big of a win for Konami. But over the years, the Silent Hill IP became legendary, unfortunately with a lot of weird decisions made by Konami.
Really hope you continue this series. Also, like someone pointed out in the comments, this is not Takayoshi Sato on the picture you've shown. I'm a big fan of this mans work and it is most unfortunate you won't see much of new work for him in recent years. Takayoshi Sato is the guy with the ever changing hair, this might be important if you plan to make a video about Silent Hill 2, because his involvement there was even bigger. Cheers!

You mention about other people feeling this or needing that from him as reasons to not “disappear” without knowing anything about his life.
What about him as an individual and how he feels? The biggest factor that causes desires to “disappear” is the feeling of lacking control over one’s circumstances. Sometimes such feelings have a legitimate basis; sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they’re caused by fixating on past failures, and other times it’s simply a lack of hope.
imho It’s up to the individual if they choose to “disappear.” No one here can force them not to. I don’t encourage anyone to “disappear,” but I respect that the person has suffered greatly and understand I can’t dictate what they should or shouldn’t do. But one thing I’ll say is that I strongly believe the majority of people that went through with it only regret it.
There were many copycat “disappearers” that mimicked what they saw on 13 Reasons Why. They thought they could record several hours worth of rants on cassette tapes and everyone will pass them around at school when they’re gone just like in the TV show. But no one did, and none of their other expectations were met. Nothing changed at the school they complained about, there were no grieving students that repented for the bullying they did, and the world kept spinning. Even though they now better understand how differently the world _really_ works compared to what they saw on TV, they now have no power to do anything about the problems they complained about. They can’t go back and have a do-over like in a video game. They’re stuck in a metaphorical prison regretting the actions they _should_ have taken while they were alive and still had the opportunity to do something.

Ya know I've always taken this game's technical side for granted but frankly, for the PS1, a console less powerful than today's pocket calculators, this large 3D map of the whole town to explore was downright impressive. Even camera tricks like the one in the alley where the POV swings down and forwards and back again as you run through must have been pushing the console to its very limits

  • @jordan9689
    @jordan9689 26 днів тому

I love seeing stuff like this. It's so revolutionary. Nowadays developers have such free range to do whatever they want they don't have to worry about many limitations even on consoles nowadays. So you know whenever they do something they add fog in a game or super dark areas it's not necessarily because they're trying to cover up areas loading in its just because thats what they wanted to do. It blows my mind how genius these old developers were. "We want to make a game on the PlayStation 1 that's fully 3D and not use pre-rendered backgrounds So how do we do that?" And some genius underdog developer says "....lets cover the place in fog." It seems so simple now but I mean that was absolutely genius back then. Because since it was a horror game the idea of fog flooding the city is absolutely perfect. If they were tasked with making any other genre of game they wouldn't have been able to use fog to cover things up and they would have had to end up using pre-rendered backgrounds even though they didn't want to. But since they just so happened to get tasked to make a horror game everything worked out perfectly in their favor. I think that's phenomenal. The ideas that this small group of developers had is truly impressive and I love the fact that people played Silent Hill for years and years without ever knowing the true reason why the fog got created in the first place. We just thought it was to be freaky and scary and creepy. We never knew that the map was loading as we were walking. Absolutely phenomenal.

I would love for them to potentially finish up the og Castlevania storyline that got cut off as soon as the minds behind that series jumped ship to pursue success elsewhere, I think they created the Bloodstained series being a spiritual successor to Castlevania not sure if that can realistically happen but hey people can dream.

You know, I blame Germany and the UK for the European censorship. This was the time when EU was not a priority for console makers, so we often got inferior versions of games, if we even got some games at all (looking at you Parasite Eve and Chrono Cross). Germany really loves it's censorship, especially concerning video games, so that's why instead of Contra, we got Probotector because having different versions for just few countries was not even in the mind of publishers. But Europe, being mainly a PC region at that time, some countries got their neutered versions of PC games, like changing the pedestrians into zombies or robots in Carmageddon while other, more relaxed countries got their games uncensored.

For Johnson the big return culminated in Lion v Angron. That's nothing. The biggest impact of Arcs of Omen was felt by Vashtorr in that he is now cruising space in a chained together Caliban. What did the Lion get? A handful of 10k year old Space Marines who probably aren't highly trusted by the troops that didn't turn traitor and flee.
I do agree with the "pop a rating" analogy. This was great for 40k TT players but underwhelming for the Black Library researchers and readers.

How was it even possible to call first Silent Hill a Resident Evil clone back then, when Resident Evil itself was a clone of Alone in the Dark. And we can call RE a clone of AitD since they played similarly, while Silent Hill had open 3D environment and had more darkness than entire AitD trilogy. Silent Hill series became a RE clone since Homecoming and judging from last released remake, Silent Hill will keep dreaming of being a RE clone series until it wakes up back to it's roots.
