Beginners Guide to Prolonged Fasting | 24-72 Hour Fasting Instructions - Thomas DeLauer
Stem Cells
This comes into play after 2-3 days of fasting
A study from USC found that prolonged fasting (2-3 days) can reset and regenerate the immune system - resulted in the depletion of white blood cells and triggered stem cell-based regeneration of new immune system cells.
Found that white blood cells are broken down during fasting, which in turn forces the stem cells in your body to produce more - the new white blood cells are not just new, but healthier and more effective than the previous cells
news.usc.edu/63669/fasting-tri...
Telomeres
Telomeres are a protective coating or cap at the end of each chromosomal DNA strand found in your cells
These protective caps help to preserve your DNA by preventing DNA strands from fraying or clumping together, which can lead to cellular damage, the precursor to disease and accelerated aging
An enzyme called telomerase can re-lengthen telomeres that are shortened during DNA replication
Stem cells are the sentinel cells of our body - when our cells incur damage, stem cells swoop in and secrete proteins that initiate the repair process
When our cells die, they give birth to daughter cells that can replace the cells we lose through a process called differentiation
The great thing about stem cells is that they express telomerase, so they tend to maintain long telomeres
Additionally, cells that are born directly from stem cells likely have longer telomeres than cells that aren't, based on the simple fact that they're one cell division away from exposure to high levels of telomerase
The more stem cells means more daughter cells from those stem cells - daughter cells that come directly from stem cells are a step removed from telomerase, and therefore should have longer telomeres

Ketones
The body begins, on average, burning ketones between 24 to 48 hours of fasting - BHB, in particular, has been found to benefit the immune system
A study from the Yale School of Medicine found that exposing human immune cells to BHB following 2 days of fasting resulted in a reduced inflammatory response
BDNF
Study published in the journal Applied Physiology Nutrition & Metabolism found that a 48-hour fast upregulated BDNF by ∼ 3.5-fold
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
Autophagy
There's no set time for when autophagy kicks in - autophagy is always occuring on some level, but increases when fasting
So it seems that the length for autophagy should really be based on the length of the other benefits as it'll be occurring alongside them
How to Start
4 to 5 days of keto before to make the transition easier - the body's of those who are not fat adapted are reliant upon a constant supply of sugar
If you jump headfirst into a fast, your body won't be able to efficiently utilize stored fats - when your blood sugar dips, it'll bring about symptoms such as lightheadedness, carb cravings, dizziness, the inability to focus and your usual sugar crash
How Should I Break My Fast
Break fast with lean protein at night, then go to bed, and resume normal eating (for extra fat burning)
Should I Workout
Low intensity exercise would still be ideal as it's preferable to deplete muscle glycogen, not just liver glycogen
A main function of glycogen is to maintain a physiological blood glucose concentration, but only liver glycogen directly contributes to release of glucose into the blood
Skeletal muscles are unable to release glucose (because muscles lack glucose 6-phosphatase) and muscles glycogen is mainly a local energy substrate for exercise, rather than an energy source to maintain blood glucose concentration during fasting
Muscle glycogen can be broken down to lactate, which can be transported to the liver and via gluconeogenesis in the liver contribute to maintaining euglycemia (Cori cycle)
However, humans do not show major decrease in muscle glycogen content during fasting - in contrast, the liver glycogen content decreases rapidly during fasting and the liver glycogen content has decreased by ∼65% after 24 h fasting

What's the best time of the day to start a prolong fast? In the morning after breakfast, or...?
How do you do a sodium load? How do you consume a teaspoon of salt? Ugh.

@@arunabh good question, some of it might be water weight
After successfully completing a 48-hour fast, can I eat whenever I want? If so, how long can I do it before starting a long fast again without gaining back what I've already lost during the first fasting?
Let's say I can eat whenever I want, does that mean I can also eat whatever I want? Including chocolate or rice?
Thank you!

I am 56 hours into my 72 hr fast and the floater in my left eye, which has been there for so long and driving me crazy, is totally gone. Halaluja, God is good.
Same here. The tension in the left side of my brain is gone. I'm doing this regularly!!!!
I have had PVD in my right eye for the past five years and have just come off a four day water fast followed by a 16-8 fast. The PVD is still there but your experience has given me hope. Thank you.
@@wirefreez hey i have had a flickering spot in my eye for the past 5 months, its not a floater and has similar symptoms of a torn retina. ive been to an eye doctor and he said he doesnt see any signs of a detached retina and wanted me to see a retina specialist. i havent done that yet. Im not too familiar with pvd, could that be the issue?
@@BringMeTheHorizonnn Hi - PVD (post vitreous detachment) is a pulling away of part of the film at the back of the eyeball - sort of like a wrinkle in cellophane - and it causes a permanent floater which has the effect of like looking through cobwebs, It doesn't flicker for me but I would definitely ask your retina specialist about it. There is a simple test they can do with an electronic instrument that photographs the back of your eye. Wishing you well.
I'm 52 hours into a 72 Hr fast right now and reading this comment made me realize my buddy is gone 😭
I watched this video 45 hours into my 3 day fast and it gave me the motivation to continue. I watched it twice. Just to think about the health benefits make me want to continue. My dad had diabetes and high cholesterol when he was 50 yrs old. He suffered until.he died when he was 59. My mom died from a heart attack and my sister died from depression. Prolonged fasting could have saved their lives. I am making sure that I saved my life by fasting and introducing fasting to others who have chronic illnesses. Keep.up the good work,!
Thanks for this comment. I have had diabetes since I was 32. 38 now, keto for 5 months i.f. 20 / 4 50lbs down and no more meds. I feel amazing and my sugar levels are of a normal person. I was scared to do 72 hrs. All in now. Respect from so ca.

Big facts
How many times you done it now? Just doing my 1st one
Or you can use some fasting app that will keep track of the hours and tell you what's happening right now is to body, there are many out there
Dr Berg doesn’t reference the studies like this guy does (I’m not saying that Berg violates the studies, just saying that it’s an advantage of Tom’s videos)…however I think that Dr Berg’s one video on what happens inside your body during a 72 hour fast is more enjoyable to watch while on a fast. He has the CGI throughout the video and that gets you more excited because you’re watching little CGI clips of your body going into hyper healing mode lol.

If you feed your body the correct fuel, going 24 or 48 hours without food should not be too difficult. It's more mental endurance you will be testing. We often eat for all the wrong reason. Great video!
@Solidario Libertad right. A lot of vegetables, the fiber will keep you satiated longer.
I’m type 1 diabetic Would a long term fast be too dangerous and create a hypoglycemic situation,? Ones insulin sensitivity could change quickly,Thus basal rate might be to strong and cause low blood sugar.
I do do intermittent fasting, I skip breakfast. But have a really hard time keeping my blood sugar from going really low when I exercise. Which gets frustrating because I have to have a juice box to prevent low but put the calories back on.😕😕😕
Isabella kelsay there is a documentary on Netflix about fasting that reviews this and many other questions. From what I gathered it can help people suffering with diabetes. My grandpa has it also, and I wish he would heed my advice about his eating habits so he could help himself but people who aren’t aware of this stuff... they think it’s absurd. I hope fasting helps you! Maybe that documentary will provide you some nice info (:
Sarah Smile I just jumped into a water prolonged fast. I’m on 71 hours, one more to go. The first day was tough, cravings and headaches come and go. It gets way easier after the first 48 hrs. I feel great! I’m almost dreading eating again, first meal will be a salad.
Isabella kelsay I would ask your physician, you’re insulin dependent so you shouldn’t change your diet as radically as a type 2 or pre-diabetic.

If you do keto OMAD for years then go into a 48 hour fast its pretty much just skipping 1 meal...
Yeah its made longer fasting real easy
True indeed!
I never thought about it that way true true
Because of my work and laziness, I was pretty much on OMAD for a long time, just switched to more disciplined keto, and cut snacking lunch time and eating out in the evening. Sometimes I work over 14 hours, come home and go straight to bed after shower, and basically skip a meal and get a 44 he fast without even thinking about it. (As long as I have my coffee in the morning!)

Your keto thingy is overrated at best also...
Arall Skiant yeah totally it’s not like oxalates or phytates or sallicylates are a thing.
Sit down vegan.
@@Acularis no they are not a thing and if you want you can avoid them.
Oxalate is made by the body and the problem with a kind of stone they do with calcium come from methionine(amino acid quite abundant in animal products). Though uric acid is also an issue (see gouts etc and why your doctor will tell you to avoid animals prot) . Methionine that also cause problem in the guts (sulfides etc) eventhough proteins in general do not ferment well(putrification). Many bacterias also take care of oxalates( if you actually do not feed yourself too much on meat).
Phytates also does some good things (for bones etc) but overall we talk of such stakeless and minor topic of nutrition here...

INTERMITTENT FASTING - smaller meal ... then big meal
PROLONGED FASTING - break fast with lean protein !!!!
No condiments, simple as you can
Do this preferable at 12:00 pm of that day .... then DON'T EAT ANYTHING UNTIL THE NEXT DAY (he said that ..... don't blame me)
Wake up in the morning and then eat you regular normal foods.
This helps to keep the fat burn.
****24:43**-**26:25** = how often you should prolong fast**
1 day per week ..... 24 hrs .... at the end of the year you'll have great results
48-72 hrs fast once a month ..... BETTER OPTION for health, longevity, immunity, etc .....
Thanks
PROLONGED FASTING - break fast with lean protein !!!! ,
does he mean after I fast about 48 hours then break fast with lean protein with small meal and go to sleep. Then wake up the next day and eat my regular foods right?
Also braking the prolonged fast should be in the evening time

Starting a 72 hour fast. This is my first time going this long. I usually give in to craving and grab a handful of cereal or boil an egg, not having done research about insulin and fat absorption during the process. This time I’m prepared & determined to let the process happen and do the mental work needed to avoid those pesky snacks that taunt you during the first 36 hours. Thanks for this video
Yes or the lucid dreams about eating food or breaking one's fast - somehow, while sleeping.
I've been following you and Dr. Berg all this year, to say I'm happy with the results from the plethora of information from you two is understated, I'm ecstatic! I've lost 70lbs in this summer alone. I came in at 289 and weighed in at 219 this morning. My end plan is to get to 200 or less then start focusing on muscle building. Thank you for all your information.
Congratulations!
How are you coming along with your goal of getting to 200 or less? Wishing you the best.
Jason Fung too.
🎉
Dr. Berg? Seriously?
My 48 hr fast first time in my 50 y life! Not having results after 16.4 IMF. I am very dizzy & light headed. This is a huge victory as I am insulin resistant & pre diabetic. I am not a normal faster. I have these issues working against me 1) chronic high level of cortisol 2) hysterectomy early menopause 3) chronic fatigue & fibromyalgia hence taking SSRIs & morphine long term. So still not feeling great at all. Feel nauseous, sweaty and shaky
How's it going now? I had a radical hysterectomy a year ago. Yeah menopause. Also have high cortisol. Here because I'm wanting to fast. :)
you have no idea how long i've been searching the internet for this type of in-depth video! it feels like most people keep spewing the same redundant info without specifying the HOW... I also really appreciate how you provided a vegan alternative! thank you, instantly subbed!!!
me too
Jason fung give a lot of info, lot.
@@su2sa1li4 Yes Jason is great and he doesn't blatantly push products. That said, I don't blame Thomas for supporting his channel with ethical sponsors provided he actually believes in them. Everyone has to make a living and Thomas does provide great information with professional and highly entertaining videos.
Thanks for this information. I started every other day eating two weeks ago. My mental clarity is astounding, lost weight, feeling great!
Thank you so much for these videos! I’m at the beginning, and they are helping me more than anything so far!! I appreciate you!
Thank you! I truly love how you explain things.
I did a 3 day water fast. I was looking up (healthy) recipes THE WHOLE TIME. I don't know if that made it worse. But when I broke my fast I transitioned into IF easily.
Jamedra A I just did the same thing 😂😂😂
Keep it up y'all
I'm doing ADF and the times I eat make me have a 40 hour fasting period. I'm on day 3 today (started with a fasting day) and I've already lost 2.2 pounds! 😊
I've fasted many times and it's rejuvenated me another fast I went on was23 hours no food no liquid and God bless my acid reflux disappeared
This is the best video on fasting I've seen so far. Simple, concise and motivational. Excellent job Thomas, you're helping thousands of people with this!
You’re so awesome Thomas. Really glad I found your channel.
Thanks! Just finished a 50 hour fast and sortof took your advise. I broke fast in the evening with about 500 calories. .
Started with
Acv+lemon juice
20min
Organic bone broth (made me feel amazing!)
20 min
Sauerkraut
20 min
4 oz chicken breast and 1 egg.
That was amazing!! So informative.. thank you 🙏😊
This is absolutely amazing info
Ty Thomas
This video is the best fasting intro I've seen ever!
I'm just coming to the end of a 24 hour fast, since I started Keto 2 months ago I am not hungry. Such a great feeling and I love finally being in control of my eating! Perhaps I will brave 48 hours next week. I've lost 14 pounds so far :)
I’ve gain 14lbs since quarantine
This was awesome. Thank you!
This is the best video I've ever seen in my 25 years on this planet. Thank you SO MUCH
The video was very helpful, HAD to subscribe :)! Keep up the good work !!!
I find fasting on keto so much easier than I did in my carb days, thankful for this video!.
Thank you for all the education - I appreciate learning the “why” behind fasting and that you give a plan. It helped with success of my fast.
Amazing content- thank you!
Thanks for the advice. I'm a 59-year old male who needs to be 20-30 lbs lighter. In the first month of COVID quarantine, I lost 10 lbs from having a better diet. Now, I just began a prolonged water fast. During the first 24 hours, I fought my agitation by drinking more water. By the 36th hour, the hunger pains had, for the most part subsided, and my brain function skyrocketed. I'm feeling pretty confident in reaching the 72 hour milestone. I may go farther.
So funny, I'm on hour 41 right now! We're in it to win!!
Same story here. Male, overweight, need to lose around 40 pounds, lost at the beginning of quarantine around 10. Started fasting 2 weeks ago and lost another 10. Now starting on the 27 hour of my 48 hour weekly fast. Wish me luck!!!
I just finished my 3 day fast and was heavily contemplating extending it, but seeing as the returns diminish, I'm breaking it now (day 4).
Starting my fast rn I’ll keep y’all updated
Definitely one of the better videos on this subject, so much information I didn’t realise about how to fast properly, thanks for posting this.
This stuff has saved my life in a very short time. Thank you.!
Great video Thomas! Thank you for your wealth of knowledge and research. Shout out to your assistants!
Excellent video! So much science! I love it. Thanks Thomas.
I wish I could like this video more than once. I love when I get a scientific breakdown of what is going on. So much good info here.
Just hit 24 hours! Headed toward 72...great info, as always! Thanks Thomas!
@@JudeMalachi doesnt bother me. I watched best baker in America and had no cravings for sweets or anything else

Amazing information. I’m 30 hours into my first ever fast of any kind, I’m finishing 2023 on a 72 hour water and bone broth fast and my fast will finish on New Year’s Day. With that I’m gonna kick all my bad habits like vaping, binge drinking and other bad habits that come with the night life life style. 2024 is the year I turn my life around 💯
Thanks Thomas - great content and advice on fasting.
Intermittent fasting daily, 48 hour fasts once a month and 72 hour fasts once every 3 months for the stem cell regeneration. Apart from that, 3 days of keto every month leading up to the longer fast. I guess that should do it. Did I miss out on anything, Thomas?
Just passed 24. Gonna try 48. Thought it would be impossible as I am a big breakfast eater. I feel great after that initial downer 6 hours in
THANK YOU MAN, everything i wanted to know, thank u very very much
Busy with my 24 hour fast. Thanks for this. So helpful
I did a 48hr fast this week, and was able to break the plateau I was into. After I broke it I told myself I was going to do a 48hr fast once a month and once you said that I got super excited. It has so many great benefits specially when you are struggling losing weight or that stubborn fat and this type of fast can help you break the plateau if you are into one just like I was. Good stuff Thomas
It’s always nice when my videos mirror what my followers are figuring out for themselves. It means you’re learning how to make this work on your own
I’ve been doing keto and IF for the past 5 months and this weekend I just did my first 48 hour fast. I actually felt wonderful, too. Also slept incredibly well.
How did u workout during fasting?do u still have energy to workout?
im following IF (16hours from 8PM-12PM) and keto diet, but always cheat on Saturday :(
i do workout @7am-8am and continue to work
What plateau?? I am doing omad and on a plateau..will prolong fast break it?
@Wu Me thanks you so much
Don't be sorry for explaining free knowledge, you doing great, thank you for it
So much valuable information. Thank you
Thank you so much. Very informative.
I was one of those guys who had a hell of a time losing weight. I'd have to be PERFECT with my diet and do HIIT between weight lifting and be insanely consistent. If I stopped any of those things I'd pack on weight rather fast. After just two months of intermittent fasting; 24 hours two-to-three times per week, I am losing weight and keeping it off much easier, even if my diet isn't perfect. Saves on the food bill too. Love it.
Hour 38. 10 to go. 👍
Just broke it w/5oz. of Yellowfin tuna fillets, pink salt and pepper. Delectable.

Thomas Delauer…the only UA-camr for which I don’t have to increase the playback speed!😂😂 He’s content is so concise and jam packed, I don’t want to speed it up because I’ll miss something important. Thanks Thomas and blessings on your family.
EXCELLENT INFO THANK U BLESSINGS
Please do a video on how to sleep well on a prolonged fast! That is the hardest part of fasting for me
Same!!
Salt water, but the salt should be one with potassium chloride and magnesium tablets and a lot of water, you should be good then.
I had similar discomfort. I generally have an 8 ounce glass of water with a TABLESPOON (or 2) of Apple cider vinegar in it. Hunger pains disappear.
2 tbs apple cider vinegar + lemon + salt + cream of tartar and use water from boiled fresh organic ginger or macha tea, problem solve, it works for me
Same!!!
Hi Tom...thank you for this great content. Could you do some vídeo on fasting and cancer? Thanks again
Thank you, great video 💪🏼
Probably your best comprehensive video about fasting!
Every Monday I fast for 24 hrs after the weekend its really good and you can definitely feel the positives, I recommend everyone try this.
This is great information! I'm going to fast, but I thought I would only do 24 hours, but I will switch to a 48 hour fast just because of this. It's going to be super fun 😁
Amazingly informative
Thanks Thomas for the support vids, I'm learning a lot about my body.
