Yeah that's the whole point of this scene. Bender takes out a knife to intimidate Andrew and to back up his earlier claim that he could kill Andrew, then he sets the knife down so as to not make that a reality.
Ohh, and the knife John was carrying in his pocket and sticks into the chair, was actually Judd Nelson's own knife - and he said "so he could protect and defend himself" out of the movie, in real life. *_Don't mess with Judd Nelson_*.

Also wrestlers really aren't shit, some can fight but most really can't hold off someone for long, especially if the opponent had even basic martial arts training.
@@donovansmith9274 but Bender is not a martial artist. His only advantage is that he has a weapon and is willing to use it. In a fair fight Andy would win. In real life where everyone plays for keeps, Bender wins by bringing a better weapon to the fight than just fists.
I don't think he was at first. Bender clearly didn't like jocks. But later on the movie I think he came to respect him somewhat when he realized they had more in common. But honestly Andrew clearly had better parents and a better upbringing. While Andrew's dad didn't exactly sound like father of the year and saw him more like a prize racehorse, his pushing of him did in a way have a positive effect on his life as it did make him into a strong wrestler and athlete which certainly had its advantages even if he wasn't entirely happy with his status. Whereas Bender's father really turned him into an abused bully, which there is nothing positive about. Also we don't really hear anything about Andrew's mom, which leads me to think she might have been responsible for his more positive traits and the fact he felt genuine remorse for what he did to Larry. I'd wager Andrew never did anything like that again.
I was a high school junior in 1985 when this came out, and I've always thought the same thing about Bender: EMO. Projects toughness but is incapable of standing up for himself. Contrast him and Cameron from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," who actually had the nads to wreck his dad's collectible Ferrari to get his father's attention. Bender just feels sorry for himself and tries to invite sympathy. Bender likely became a successful, lifelong politician.
In Ferris Bueller, if I remember correctly, Cameron's dad was neglectful and domineering, but not physically abusive. Bender's dad threatens and beats his family. Both are bad, but the differences are important when we're talking about how children develop/rebel.
Anne, I was in elementary school at the time. From what I could tell, they did seem like instant classics. Kids were going around quoting The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller; and Ben Stein's "Anyone...? Anyone...? Bueller...? Bueller...?" became a recognized motif while the movie was still in theaters. And Breakfast Club & the others you mentioned were all considered, by default, essential viewing. I was too young to be reading film reviews at the time, so I can't say whether folks were already talking about how they encapsulated the era while that era was still going on. But I definitely got the sense that the general public considered them important and/or thought of them as filling a crucial, broad-appeal niche (the same niche that Rebel Without a Cause had occupied thirty years earlier, I suspect). (I'm more jaded about them now than I was back then, BTW.)
Anne Liesveld. Yes, they were huge successful movies for teens...and you would rent the VHS of them for sleepovers....pretty much all John Hughes movies, The Outsiders, Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, etc. I don’t know if we thought they would stand the test of time, but it’s good to know younger generations like them.
What he was capable of? Anybody with a knife becomes more dangerous. The fact that he had to pull a knife shows who would have won. Man to man, no weapons, Bender would have been tied in a knot.
I have to agree. If Claire was as legitimately disgusted as she tries to pretend to be, then she wouldn't have kept talkin to Bender throughout the movie. I think she was into him, but didn't want to even admit it to herself.
@@TheBreakfastClub1985-u6d When Claire is leaning against the big statue in the middle of the room (the scene before Bender asks if she would like to see a pic of a guy with elephantitus of the nuts) you can see him staring at her neck really intensely and then he swallows. He really likes her and who knows, it might actually have lasted after the weekend 😂 Imagine them getting married in the future.
Bender puts on this tough exterior because it's his way of dealing with his rotten home life, and he can't understand why these other kids are unhappy with their parents and home life because they seem to have it made from where he stands.
I find it curious that Andrew and John fought to defend Claire the entire movie. When Andrew made fun of Claire feeling sorry for herself, Bender defended her by asking the jock if his family life was nice. And in this scene where El walked in on Claire, Andrew was willing to take a stab as long as he left Claire alone. Although Andrew was insufferable with John (and vice versa) I want to highlight the fact that he really respects women
In a fair fight, Andy would win. But in a nasty street fight, Bender would use a weapon or really brutal tactics to win. That's why they silently agree to not escalate things. Andy doesn't know how far Bender will go, and Bender is concerned that he can't control himself. Great scene.
Bender always played like he would stab or even kill Andrew, but the reality is he would have been choked out before he could pull the knife. But also there is the point were Bender wouldn't get to that point, he was playing tough, but he wasn't going to hurt Andrew.
geez louise, i can't even imagine that! The personalities of Bender and Andrew are so different! It's a tough mental image of seeing Emilio's character as a punky street kid.
it's funny, cause Andrew seems so much like his father right here "you dont talk to her, dont look at her, dont even THINK about her" i imagine this is the way his father talks to him, about his life, when he's doing something wrong. i kind-of find it funny/ironic, though, we never get to meet or see his dad in the film.

Bender was very obviously afraid hence why he was slowly backing away. It was clear he was never going to use that knife.
@@donovansmith9274 but Bender is not a martial artist. His only advantage is that he has a weapon and is willing to use it. In a fair fight Andy would win. In real life where everyone plays for keeps, Bender wins by bringing a better weapon to the fight than just fists.
Alison takes the knife XD
I love how everyone is an in Depth psychologist on movies on youtube
so many great moments in this movie.. One of my all time favorites
Allison taking the knife gets me every time!
I remember seeing this movie in class. Idk why but my friend and I laughed for 10 straight minutes when Alison stole the knife.
incredible mental image Bender gave everyone when talking to Claire all about getting felt up!
"cos i'd kill you" lol yeh right
***** he kinda was lol
I think deep down, Bender was fond of Andrew. That's why he wasn't going to really fight him and rough him up.
That one guy uses his wrestling grappling or whatever he's a wrestler and he's good and he takes them down that's funny
Andy would be a good police officer lol easy take down and he's fast as hell so there's just no side effects of arresting anyone
What he was capable of? Anybody with a knife becomes more dangerous. The fact that he had to pull a knife shows who would have won. Man to man, no weapons, Bender would have been tied in a knot.
You can tell what Bender's saying to Claire is turning her on,she just doesn't wanna show him that it is.
Don Scott Oh he pick upon it though, that's why he wouldn't let her drop her gaze from him until, Andrew jump in and said something.
I have to agree. If Claire was as legitimately disgusted as she tries to pretend to be, then she wouldn't have kept talkin to Bender throughout the movie. I think she was into him, but didn't want to even admit it to herself.
@@SnowyWolborg Yeah. They were both eyeing each other the whole time.
I can't unsee Emilio as billy the kid so this makes me laugh lmao.
Bender never tried to get his knife back from Allison. He was probably a little afraid of her.😃
Bender puts on this tough exterior because it's his way of dealing with his rotten home life, and he can't understand why these other kids are unhappy with their parents and home life because they seem to have it made from where he stands.
Good cast in this movie!! They all did a good job!! :) Never get tired of this classic! :)
Love how UA-cam's description of this movie is "Comedy"
The first 40 seconds excite me soooo much. Bender is every teenage girl's dream!
eww lol
Tbh he was kinda creepy sometimes, but I would still hook up with him
I agree! Beautiful!
Hell no lmao speak for yourself
Kristina Savic Yikes
I love how Andrew grabs bender don't mess with him
The number of people completely misinterpreting things in this scene in the comments is....truly astronishing. It's not that complicated.
Bender always played like he would stab or even kill Andrew, but the reality is he would have been choked out before he could pull the knife. But also there is the point were Bender wouldn't get to that point, he was playing tough, but he wasn't going to hurt Andrew.
Gotta love Allison. And Emilo's face parts.
Emilio Estevez was originally also considered for the role of John Bender, but switched over for the role of Andrew Clark.
geez louise, i can't even imagine that! The personalities of Bender and Andrew are so different! It's a tough mental image of seeing Emilio's character as a punky street kid.
i love sound of the switchblade clicking
Probably the Top Takedown in climax history
it's funny, cause Andrew seems so much like his father right here "you dont talk to her, dont look at her, dont even THINK about her"
i imagine this is the way his father talks to him, about his life, when he's doing something wrong. i kind-of find it funny/ironic, though, we never get to meet or see his dad in the film.
I know it’s a movie but damn that was a great counter/reaction by Andrew
Bender was lucky he wasn't fighting 2Bit
Physics club is f*cking awesome. Bender never saw MacGyver.
2:15 lollll allison
I pretty sure that Bender was letting Allison steal the knife, because in the movie he had sympathy and had a little bit of a soft spot for her.
I love it when he get's up and say's "Cuz ill kill" like a bad ass
When Bender walks over the table to get at Andrew
Allison taking the knife is THE. BEST. HAAHHAHAHAHHA
I never noticed Allison stealing the knife 😂
Let’s face it we would all definitely steal the knife too
If Bender talked to me they way he talks to Claire in the beginning of this clip, I’d just cream.
LMAO!!!! I don't know if I would have gone THAT far but I did MELT! Beautiful eyes, nice mouth, beautiful skin and that dark hair. Yum!!!!💕💕💕💕
I like how a majority of the comments are about Allison taking the knife, but each one thinks they're the only ones who saw it. Lol
And 10 months after your comment, people are still thinking they're the first ones to see it.
@@jeffo9396 lol
Anyone else found Allison pulling the knife out the table cute?
December 2020 anyone
I’ve watched this movie a few times a year since 2009
