FILM DESCRIPTION:
John Hughes wrote and directed this quintessential 1980s high school drama featuring the hottest young stars of the decade. Trapped in a day-long Saturday detention in a prison-like school library are Claire, the princess (Molly Ringwald); Andrew, the jock (Emilio Estevez); John, the criminal (Judd Nelson); Brian, the brain (Anthony Michael Hall); and Allison, the basket case (Ally Sheedy). These five strangers begin the day with nothing in common, each bound to his/her place in the high school caste system. Yet the students bond together when faced with the villainous principal (Paul Gleason), and they realize that they have more in common than they may think, including a contempt for adult society. Without Bender, it would have been a normal detention.
There's no guarantee that things even really changed for them at the end, but they did gain a new perspective.
A lot of people are saying they don't understand the scene, why Bender is so rude. But if you watch til the end, and indeed from the very beginning, it's obvious that he likes her but knows she would never even look at him. She is valuable and he is worthless. He is scared of rejection, but turns it into bitterness and rudeness to protect himself. He is so used to being treated as worthless, that he rejects everyone before they can reject him, so it wont matter as much. He is especially rude to Claire, because he cares especially about being rejected by her. Its possible that to him even having them hate him is better than having them not think of him at all. Dunno, all I know is that this movie I incredibly deep. 😱

I'm _SO_ thankful that they never attempted to remake this. Even Hollywood seems to know their boundaries.
They were planning on doing a sequel in 1995 but because John Hughes and Judd Nelson did not get along the Idea was scrapped.

I like how bender nods at Claire after she says that she won't turn out like her parents, even after ripping into her about being privileged. It's kinda like him saying well done on not wanting to grow up and be snotty like her family. In fact bender sorta sorts everyone out, like he's a sort of anti hero

You are right. Let's be honest, if Bender wasn't in that room with them, they would have had a boring 8 hours. They'd have just been sitting there in silence, maybe exchanging an awkward word here and there. Bender was the one who actually got them to talk with one another because he pushed the envelope. Nobody else was bold enough to do that.
Intense scene. Still kind of tough watching Bender rip into Claire. It was just so unprovoked. Great depiction of how an angry adolescent boy from a poor family would vent his frustration at believing he could never have such a privileged upper-class girl.

Antonym Scalia Again, I disagree. You'd have to be damn near psychotic to be able to read people to such a minute level. I do agree that this is what's happening here, and what leads to the film's end, but I don't believe for a second that he's aware of what he's doing.
I like how after Claire says that she's never going to be like her parents, Bender looks at her like she's ridiculous and they make eye contact and she says -- desperately, and sincerely -- "ever." He just nods and leaves it be. I thought that was such a powerful moment but I'm still trying to figure out why
probably because he never wants to be like his father so he understands the feeling. He may know nothing about her life which seems perfect from the outside but he does get how someone would not like to become their parents. THAT he understands 100%.

Because Claire acknowledges hers messed up a little bit, and she won't do what they did... So he kind of respects that. Bender, however, is slowly turning into his dad already. Why do think it's *him* that said, "Who cares?" to Claire?
Bender said a lot of those things to make them open their eyes up.

@@holiday197 When Andy first says "you might as well not even exist at this school", Bender looks to Allison, who that quote could also describe. I always saw it as he acknowledged her cause he knew that and didnt want to ignore her over it, cause it hurt him and he's much more out there than Allison is so she might feel like collateral damage . Maybe I relate to her too much (cause I've had a very similar thing happen and I kinda reacted that way) and read into it too deep, but I like the sentiment and since it's just a movie, who cares if it's technically wrong.
Allison was my favorite, she was by far the smartest and the realest person in that groud. She has some kind of wisdom, and at the same time some kind innocence that makes her unique. Her statements about sex and growing up are the best of the movie. Love her.

Yeah, I really liked Alison, even though she was manipulative (making Claire admit she's a virgin), she seemed to know when another person was lying, she was innocent too. And I also liked Claire, she was stuck up but she was kind, vulnerable and innocent. Honestly, I loved when both the characters interacted, I would have loved more Claire/Alison scenes.

PalmurcioWorld She was my favorite too. What made her unique was that every other character's problem was because of a dysfunctional relationship with their parents whereas Allison didn't have a relationship with her own. Even though she was looked at as weird and eccentric, she was probably the most normal one in the whole group because she could spot phoniness a mile away. This was pointed out several times throughout the movie: the scene where she asked Andrew what he did to get into detention and then asking for the real reason why he was there and of course Claire's BS about virginity and sex.
When Ally says "When you grow up, your heart dies" gets me every time. I relate to that quote so much.

The Shadow assassin your heart dies because everything that you care is left you behind alone, your parents that you love die, your love ones left you, the world you view as beautiful isn't that beautiful, and life becomes tragic that you hope you shouldn't be a part of it from the very start, you will live it your way at the end, all alone. We live to suffer and from that pain we grow to be a human we wanted, life breaks you so many times you're even lost count of it.
Some people build something delusional to protect themselves from this fact, like they wanted to gain peace and happiness in this life while the only peace and happiness you've got is to not live at all or in other words _away from the world and it's society._ There will be always a problem and a burden for you to carry, history tells us this but people still built those delusional defence for them to feel alright and not fight, not even the propeths of God had it easy, they've been rejected, many and many times over and over again even tho they tell the world the truth and kindness. There's never an easy way to live doesn't matter how you see others as it is, they got their own tragic story the couldn't tell and they carry all alone until the day they die.
What Ally said is that when we grow up all of this things would make us become more a realist, we see the things as they are, if people do bad then they do bad doesn't matter if they had good intentions behind it like saving their family because it doesn't matter to us at all.
Life is cruel and we can't saves everyone.

Bender is being mean to Claire cause she is rich and popular, whereas he is an outcast and abused at home, so he gets pissed when she compares herself to him since she has everything and he 'got shit', but what he doesn't realize is that she may be popular and rich, but she is just as unhappy with her life as he is. People assume that her life is perfect, that she wants what all pretty rich girls are supposed to want, in Bender's own words "diamond earrings, her father's BMW, shopping, a white wedding (probably to a rich preppy guy)", but she doesn't care about things like diamonds. She is more than what people see, just like Bender is more than the worthless asshole that everyone else thinks he is. They are similar that way.

BigLTheBestMC I'm 44 and it's amazing how smoking has drastically gone down especially for high school students over the years which is a good thing of course. When I was 16 I started smoking. During the '80's in our high school we actually had a smoker's lounge and students were allowed to smoke in this designated area outside. It was during an era where we knew that smoking was not healthy but we did it anyways mainly because our parents did it. I'm glad to see young folks today not doing it and seeing cigarettes for what they are....stupid, harmful and expensive.

The following are the reasons each character is in detention on Saturday: Andrew (Emilio Estevez): taped a guy's butt cheeks together in the locker room. Brian (Anthony Michael Hall): flare gun went off in his locker, Bender (Judd Nelson): pulled a false fire alarm. Claire (Molly Ringwald): ditched class to go shopping. Allison (Ally Sheedy): didn't do anything, she didn't have anything better to do on a Saturday (however, this claim is most likely untrue, and is part of Allison's compulsive lying).

this movie shows that even people from different walks of life can come to an understanding when faced with the same situation, case here being detention. In the 80's i found that bullies can sometimes become your friend now it's like you either kill him or he'll kill you.
Kill or be killed. I had to find that out the hard way. There's the way that it ought to be and then there's the way that it is. I'm doing the killin' if that's what it takes to protect myself and achieve my dreams. I'm real like Bender. I also have a sincere heart like Bender. I'm just not weak and I'm not a pushover. :)

I recently started shipping Claire and Bender and I JUST noticed the way he nods at her at 2:35 when she said she was never gonna be like her parents -- he may be an asshole to her beforehand, but I found that as a way of him apologizing to her for it-- her looking at him straight in the eye as she said legitimately let's him know that Claire doesn't like the life she's in right now despite everything she has…

Allison is the only person I have any time for. She is the only one of them who doesn't harm the others.

I'm me, and I recognise an abuser when I see one. Bender is abusive. Probably because he has himself been abused, it's a lack of understanding about how to healthily express affection. So he manipulates the object of his affection instead.
Brian is bitter because no one wants to be with him, he seems to think the world owes him that for some reason. He's incredibly entitled.
And the jock? He's someone who thinks peer pressure is an excuse to harm others. He's desperate to fit in and be accepted, so much he'll take innocent people down in order to do so.
None of those are people I'd want to be. Abusive, bitter and lacking character and the convictions of their beliefs.
Also they are teenagers. Not fully formed adults. No grown man should want to follow the philosophy of someone half their age.
I'm not a snob, I'm not subscribed to peer pressure. I'm not like Clare, her actions are very similar to the jock's only minus the physical abuse, she's all about the emotional abuse towards others instead. Although she has every right to refuse advances from any one she chooses to refuse, such as Brian.
Allison isn't really guilty of much as I say. She doesn't attack others in spite of her pain. She internalises it and instead attacks herself. Not healthy either, but an admirable attempt at being a decent human being. She does strange things in the hope they will guard as a defense mechanism and won't let others anywhere near her. Her makeover isn't about the fact she was ever ugly, it was about allowing herself to be stripped of her protective armour in front of others. It was about expressing her vulnerability and learning a little trust. Something Bender also needs to do, he vents the same thing through aggression, he's clearly very introspective like Allison and also highly intelligent but has enough confidence to push others away in a less self destructive manner.
What the Breakfast Club says to me is more a warning to parents and teachers. Any adult dealing with a teen/child. Please try to remember you are forming these people indirectly. That your neglect and abuse creates these damaged creatures that can't always be saved at a later date. That they need kindness, love, encouragement and reassurance because they might not be getting it anywhere else. That's my take.

Did this scene between Bender and Claire for my drama midterm. I was Claire. My partner and I both got so into it that I had to run to the bathroom afterwards to throw up because the emotions were so real it physically took a toll on me. The whole class was dead silent when we finished the scene.

I used to talk like bender at my high school to the rich girls when they called me fat or ugly. It kinda hit home too because in freshman and sophomore year i got only Ds and Fs, I was a total deadbeat. When bender started tearing into claire, I felt like it was a part of myself. I dont know, I never got treated like shit as bad as bender, but I know the feeling of hating everyone on earth, including yourself. And he talks just like I used to at that time.

That's because Bender is the only one that doesn't bullshit. They were all thinking what he was.

I'm not mocking this scene, but last winter when my brother and I were coming back from visiting our family in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I insisted on paying for gas and asked him if he wanted anything from the store. He said he wanted the "John Bender special" and while I bought him his cigarettes (I HATE smoking), I did grab him by his collar and shake him while shouting, "Yo, smoke up, Robby!!"

It’s amazing how John mocks Claire, but when he stops, you can see by his eyes that he immediately regrets it.

Claire may seem like she’s living a great life, but she’s probably going through so much guilt already, and the only way she can actual release her guilt is by crying and insulting herself inside, which is why she is always so quick to cry whenever Bender remarks on her family’s wealth.

Because at this point they've bonded enough that he's genuinely started to like her/want to be with her. At the beginning of the day he didn't care. She was just some beautiful priss he could enjoy tormenting, make her blush. Now he cares about her and he's mad probably at himself because he never wanted or expected that to happen and her because he feels all she'd ever do was look down on him, never give him a chance and it makes him lash out. He wants her to see how blind she can be.
I bet you him liking Claire maybe realizing he liked Claire scared the living shit out of him.

Although I love Molly Ringwald as an actor ( probably my favorite actress of the 80s because of her filmography : PiP and 16 candles ) Allison is by far my favorite character in BC. She's so different from all the other characters and I feel like her family situation ( which is almost no family situation at all ) is the hardest. She plays her part amazingly well and gives the right emotions when needed. Also my mother who was in high school in the 80's had friends that said she resembled Ally Sheedy's looks and attitude in this movie ( not all of it ) so she kind of holds a place in my heart...

This was my favorite part of the movie! Seeing teenagers tell their struggles in life. Especially how different type of teenagers explained their struggles, when you wouldn't even suspect them to have anything wrong in their lives.
“I could disappear forever and it wouldn’t make any difference, I may as well not exist at this school, remember?” The only thing Bender ever said that actually hit me.
Funny thing after all that's said and done all of them are loners even when they're with their "real" friends...

Bender is jealous of Claire although he won't admit it. He is already heading down the role of his father. He is bitter and treats everyone like they are worthless. Thank goodness he has an epiphany.
Jealous in one way but also full of contempt and spite. He knows she wouldn't last a day with his parents. So in his mind she's weak and would be absolutely nothing without her parents. I'd also say he understands how vile some parents can be - even if they're wealthy like Claire's parents. It's quite likely Claire's father buys her expensive stuff and tries to buy her affection and love but it's not working.
Life dealt him a tough hand. What he doesn't understand is that life can be tough even if you're materially well-off. You're just having a different way of dealing with that and don't retort to anti-social behavior like crime and theft.
Watched this with my teenage daughter recently......Her only response to me after the movie was over? "Daddy, I had no idea high school for you is the same as it is for me. It's like they're the same people." I just hugged her and said "Yes." That's all. No need to tell her "See, I told you so!!" etc......She got it.
This movie is awesome. But it was really this scene which i understood the most. Most people DO NOT understand where Bender is coming from, i don't have it as bad as he does, but what he said about nobody caring about his disappearance is true, and that if claire was gone the school would freakout (She is pristine as mentioned earlier in the film by Bender himself). I've been in the position of Bender trying to explain this to a group, then got alienated at school. I came across as the brutally honest asshole, when really all i tried to do was explain reality. A girl was in the group, and she showed a little attraction towards me after that (she was taken), but would never appraoch me. That's the part where a lot of people do not understand. In sumamry, Bender's Honest and Brutal wisdom is masked by his rebel personality and appearance.

If we take this movie as real life, then you have to assume bender had some kind of reputation before they even got into detention together and it seemed like his reputation was not good. Bender is the kind of guy who only goes to school because he has to, doesn't care anything about the school or the people in it, seems to to make fun of people, then he wonders why no one would care if he was gone.How much effort did he put into trying to make friends? I'm not really sure why everyone likes bender. he ws a jack ass through out the majority of the movie. Like in one of the first scenes in the movie when they are in the library and he is giving shit to Claire and ugh I forget Emilio's characters name, but what was the point in doing that? In this scene they were supposedly telling or showing off talents they had and he had to give shit to claire about what she did. Why is that?
Mark W Are you talking about the start when he's asking if both Claire and Andrew are together? I think he was just curious at first, but he then he starts to notice her princess status within the school (When he makes a bet that she's a virgin, i think....). Of course at that point Claire thinks he's gross. It is really difficult to explain, but those who have been there would know basically. I need to be in my right thinking hat at the moment lol. But yeah i suppose Bender refuses to submit to Claire unlike the others in this particular scene by sarcastically clapping then making his point. Basically he stood up for himself, maybe that's where Claire's attraction towards Bender happens. I think the library scene was an attempt at mingling with everyone, well that's how i see it (Hell, even the geek is smoking, not everyday you see that....). But remember that's just me. Matthew Adrian Rose I would go a step further by saying that Bender's honest and brutal wisdom IS what makes him a rebel. I don't think he's trying to fit in because he knows he can't so he just points out the reality. Good point that you made though!

I don't think the others were really submitting to Claire, I just think they were showing appreciation for that talent as lame as it was. I don't think they were kowtowing to her, I think they thought what she did was pretty cool And Claire turned out to be actually pretty nice. She was right at the beginning. Bender and people like him already made a judgement about her without even getting to know her. But of course that was what the whole movie was about, Everyone had a pre conceived judgement on everyone else. I kinds did like how Bryan shut Bender up later on. Earlier Bender was making fun of Bryan ,saying how his life was so perfect, when in reality, it was just as crappy in a different way

I’ve gone through the same pain as Bender. I understand this whole scene far more than I’m comfortable with. The people who had everything gifted to them without having to work or suffer still aren’t happy. How happy then do you think the people who have nothing are? The people who have never known anything other than suffering? How dare these fools compare themselves to people like Bender or myself or you reading this. The arrogance of humanity is blinding.
Everyone has feelings. By your logic, Bender has nothing to complain about because someone has it worse than him.
You can't think of it just because someone is rich that they have a great life. My father was rich and I had everything, but at the same time, he was abusive. My mother divorced him because of his abuse and I became her replacement. He gave me her clothes she left behind and told me to wear them any time I left the house and I was to only go out with him. I could not see my friends outside of school and even going to school, I had to wear my mother's clothes and have my hair like hers. The earrings I wore were apology earrings he bought me after telling me I failed him. The diamond ring? That was after he held me hostage in my own bed.
So, no, it's not all nice and rich kids can suffer despite appearances. I lost friends because they thought I was lying to them about abuse..they thought that since I had the dream life with all the money that nothing was wrong. Sometimes you're unhappy for different reasons and money can't fix that.

One of my faves directed by the late great John Hughes. This is very realistic of high school life and all of the cliques. And is sad but also hilarious! I love the ending when Claire gives Bender one of her diamond earrings and he puts it on.
People arguing about today's teens seem to forget that this is ONLY A MOVIE.
Even way back then, different high school cliques would never pour their heart out to each other. This is nothing but coming-of-age fantasy. Brilliant, but sadly, not real life.

At the time, I had just known the existence of this movie because I've always been a real Simple Minds devotee but I didn't take the time to discover the whole thing around Breakfast Club. And then, I had only watched the end of the movie with Don't You Forget About Me in the background thanks to UA-cam... I've thought to myself '' wow it could be a pretty good movie of this era '', just that to be honest... And recently I watched the whole movie for the very first time and I was rarely so touched and moved by anything... I mean everything in Breakfast Club is almost perfect, extremely subtle, kind and deep. Each actor is special and memorable (Anthony Michael Hall was a bit of a prodigy, Emilio Estevez quite attractive, Molly Ringwald just adorable, Ally Sheedy quivering and Judd Nelson holder of an incredible actor's style including fascinating penetrating eyes). The team's unity makes the richness with this precise way from the director to seize each little special looks, each little special emotions, each little special switches from the young character souls. It remains something so so so kind and memorable, a little bit outdated okay but significant of an era full of naivety and contradictions because young people possessed neither mobiles nor tablets just books, rock and new wave. Because in addition to being a testimony of '' how it feels to be young in the 80's '', Breakfast Club is still universal, immediately accessible to our soul. Besides, it's an example of remarkable direction : not only emotions - which are unforgettable here - but real directing. John Hughes chisels and polishes each plane to maintain us close to the characters and to let us absorb a little piece of each of them. Many special moments with synthesizers driven little abandoned feelings from these young moving eyes... I can watch Breakfast Club over and over again now my heart will be each time overcome with emotions. 80's forever.

This movie is a Classic amongst Classics. Viva La 80's!
The conflict between Claire and Bender is especially acute in this iconic scene. Brian serves as the bond that glues them all together. He has no bones about revealing his true feelings of nurtured loyalty towards them all. It helps them all to gradually tear down any walls between them, makes them feel more comfortable to open up since he takes the lead in this. The one who holds back is macho Bender. His tough exterior serves as a protection for him as he probably has been scarred the most. Besides Claire, the one who is main source of antagonism is Brian, whom he perceived as pathetic, but he blazes towards Brian's defense after Claire inadvertantly hurts him in her honest appraisal of how she will treat him when their lives at school resumes the following week.
Actually Bender is the only one who totally gets it. He sees through everyone else's facade and bullshit.
