This child won the Academy Award (best supporting actress) for her role in this film. She was the youngest person to win ANY Academy Award. Hard to believe that this movie is now 50 years old - a half-century old - and she still holds that record. Equally amazing, during the time the movie was being filmed she was 8 1/2 years old. If you factor in her age it is one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema, but she acts her role so effortlessly that it is easy to overlook it while we are watching the movie.

The Bob She was incredible, but it was also her father’s finest performance so I think they were inspiring each other. Maybe a bit of competition too. Daddy had to act better than he ever acted before just in an attempt to keep up with his daughter.

Love Story hasn’t aged well, is overly melodramatic, a bit unbelievable, and looks as dated as Peyton Place (only the music saves it) but Paper Moon is as fresh today as it has ever been.

Wonderful! The tumbleweed and dust blowing in the street, the muted radio in the background and the Nehi soda that many of us remember. Fabulous scene!

I also would recommend the 1967 movie "Bonnie & Clyde" and the 1940 film "The Grapes Of Wrath" for more insights on daily life in the Depression era. That was as REAL as it gets!
I've watched Paper Moon here and there over the years, and every time it's better than I remembered. Usually, it's the opposite. I let my 6 y.o. daughter watch up to this scene with me the other day and to my shock she loved it as much as any Disney movie and is now begging to see the rest of it. I think the spunky, tough girl seemed familiar to her. May regret letting her watch that.

The script is a gem coupled with a father/daughter dream team. Peter Bogdanovich directing. It’s just so good on so many levels, it’s unreal how good movies use to be. This was normal filmmaking back in the day. So so good
Peter Bogdanovich was a brilliant director. He made 3 magnificent films in the early 70s: Paper Moon, The Last Picture Show and What’s Up Doc? All three hold up incredibly well.

Watched this with my family at the drive-in in the town of Atco (southern, NJ) when it came out in '73. The place later spent years as a state auto inspection yard, and last I knew it was abandoned and overgrown.
What scene is not great in this Movie! Watched this with my Father @ least 22 times or more..........Neither one ever complained just enjoyed every moment. Was our #1 favorite.

This captures the essence of fathering a tough daughter. In this case, Miss Tatum won the Academy Award and is the youngest ever winner. I have read the book the movie is based on ("Addie Pray") and it is good too. Quite a period piece. Not many great movies about the Great Depression. This is probably the big one.

I have almost no doubt now. The Better off Dead director/writer was thirteen when Paper Moon came out. I was a paperboy in late 70s for a while (Oakland Tribune), 'collecting' sucked. Owing two dollars for home delivery in 1985 seems accurate. A dollar a week, including Sundays.
I always liked Ryan's performance in this. I believe he could have earned respect as a "serious" actor if he had a little more time to hone some skills before his career tanked.
Of course I have the Paper Moon video for quite a number of years. And I bet that I still watch it once or twice every year. For me the greatest human nature movie of all time. And they sure don't make em like this anymore. Such a shame.
I have been drawn to this scene since my mum died of cancer. She had been separated from my father for 20 years but he still managed to take advantage of the situation. It's an absolute masterpiece and was marketed as an adventure comedy. Just beneath surface is a narcissistic sycopath. The scene where he lectures her about scruples is also a classic as is the road car scene. It's like watching my childhood flash before my eyes. It helped me understand just what a total prick my father is.
You ought to read Tatum's autobiography, if you think he's bad in the movie you should learn what he was like in real life. Makes Moses look like an angel. Despite their sad history I will never stop loving this perfect film.

That's his own fault. He was a hot tempered, violent person who alienated everybody through abuse and mistreatment, even his kids.

Of course I have the Paper Moon video for quite a number of years. And I bet that I still watch it once or twice every year. For me the greatest human nature movie of all time. And they sure don't make em like this anymore. Such a shame.

I have been drawn to this scene since my mum died of cancer. She had been separated from my father for 20 years but he still managed to take advantage of the situation. It's an absolute masterpiece and was marketed as an adventure comedy. Just beneath surface is a narcissistic sycopath. The scene where he lectures her about scruples is also a classic as is the road car scene. It's like watching my childhood flash before my eyes. It helped me understand just what a total prick my father is.
You ought to read Tatum's autobiography, if you think he's bad in the movie you should learn what he was like in real life. Makes Moses look like an angel. Despite their sad history I will never stop loving this perfect film.

I often wondered what happened to Addy Pray. Did she grow up and make a Bad News Bears movie. Did she show her tits to RICHARD BURTON in the gross out film CIRCLE OF TWO in 1980?? Gross, over the line. I understand why Ryan was pissed.
