Homestyle COASTAL FARE At THE LIGHTHOUSE RESTAURANT | A Homemaker’s Expression Of Food & Memories

popular coastal restaurant, mangalore, mangalorean, coastal karnataka, kundapur, prawn ghee roast, prawn curry, fish curry, bangude pulli munchi, mackerel, chicken curry, kori rotti, squid koliwada, drumstick koliwada, neer dosa, ragi mani, seafood
Married into a family of traditional restaurateurs, Prathiksha Nayak sought to create a dining experience that embodied her expression and memories of food growing up. The result is The LightHouse Restaurant, an airy space that is quite un-restaurant-like and more reminiscent of a South Canara home. Here, she serves coastal fare gleaned from family recipes and from her cooks who have worked in kitchens at legendary establishments along the West Coast. Keeping in mind her neighbourhood clientele, there’s a smattering of Chinese and North Indian on the menu too, but it is the dishes from the Kundapur-Mangalore belt that are much in favour here, as I discovered during a recent lunch here. Hope you enjoy this episode, take care and stay safe.

Drum Stick Koliwada
The robust koliwada masala finds its origins in the fishing community of Maharashtra, and although its combination with the drumstick comes as a bit of a surprise, its flavours seem to find a happy partner in this fibrous vegetable. I only wished the drum stick segments were longer, allowing one to chew on the fry better.
Rs. 190 (usd 2.6)
8/10
Squid Koliwada
The squid holds on to the koliwada masala in a tight embrace, one can taste its spicy notes in every crisp bite. Definitely, a must-order here.
Rs. 300 (usd 4.1)
9/10
Prawn Ghee Roast
The ghee roast masala is modified here to incorporate coconut and some cashew, so the chilli punch is toned down a wee bit, but that doesnt get in the way of an enjoyable ghee roast. One that sits lighter on the stomach as opposed to a traditional ghee roast preparation. The prawns are fresh and cooked right; this is the sort of dish that is begging to be mopped up with a neer dosa.
Rs. 450 (usd 6.1)
9/10
Prawn Hinga Udha
A gentle poached prawn curry, its flavours laced with the edge of hinga (asafoetida) and a lashing of coconut oil. Makes for a comforting combination with the boiled rice, the sort of preparation that you would taste in a Konkani home.
Rs. 450 (usd 6.1)
8.5/10
Kori Rotti
The chicken curry is robust in its flavours with a savoury onion punch, you can taste the coconut, the coriander, cumin and the slightly bitter edge of the mustard seeds in the seasoning. A delicious combination when ladled over the dry roti.
Rs. 320 (usd 4.4)
8.5/10
Bangude Pullimunchi
You can taste the sharp tartness of the tamarind (pulli) and the spicy punch of the munchi (chilli) in the gravy. The bangude (mackerel) is fresh, the masala though falls a bit short in steeping into the fish. An enjoyable curry nonetheless, with the appam.
Rs. 250 (usd 3.4)
8/10
Raagi Manni
The raagi manni makes for a soothing and light end to a meal here.
Rs. 60 (usd 0.8)

@@FoodLoversTV @Food Lovers TV @Kripal, I love your oratory skills and presentation, but do you have anything against Tulu people or cuisine? Anytime when there is a Konkani dish you proudly present it as a Konkani preparation, but for other Tulu dishes such as Kori rotti, Sukka or ghee roast, you never present them as Tulu dishes, Please do appreciate the original Tuluva Cuisine as well...
@@RaviShankar-ud5cu That's unfair to blame it on him. Something's get lost in the conversation. If someone refers to something as "MANGALOREAN FOOD", it by default goes as a Tuluva cuisine. Konkani cuisine is only a subset of the vast Tuluva Mangalorean cuisine and Kripal as I have seen him since the first episode has been very open and impartial towards any culture.
My belief is it didn't really go through his mind to mention it and it's nothing intentional. You may consider it a TULUVA, everytime he says MANGALOREAN. Maybe he'll start mentioning henceforth.

Making me to watch the video again and again.... Thank you kripal sir for making delicious food more delicious with the kind of your presentation.... 😉😉😋😋👍👍👍
Simply Superb
When restaurant owner says she likes Mutton more than chicken kripal is heartily smiling 😂😂😂Always biased towards red meat.
Yet to come across someone who love chicken over red meat...chicken is eaten mainly because it is cheap and plenty.
@@sachinyadu Disagree. Most of Mangaloreans / coastal karnataka people love #1 seafood then chicken but no mutton. Generally, Mangalorean restaurants do not serve Mutton.
@@deepakjs2539 I didn't mention anything about sea food. I know that not only mangaloreans most people living in coastal areas prefer seafood over chicken as seafood is tasty and they get it fresh. However, most of the people I came across loves mutton more than chicken. The broiler variety that is available in plenty has no particular taste. But mutton has its disadvantages. Being high in fat, it can't be taken frequently.
sachinyadu Red Meat surely leads to Gout. White meat is lean and safe. This is health knowledge existing in India historically. Cheap or expensive nobody really cares.
@@prabhakarcn3940 this is not a historical or ancient knowledge in India..It was discovered by scientists that excessive consumption of red meat will have negative consequences for health...Red meat is consumed regularly by many Europeans arabs and Americans..if what you say is correct, then all these country shud be low on health indices...which everyone know is not the case...if you eat red meat in proper quantities with fruits and vegetables you will have no health issues. A majority of Indians also eat mutton.
Lovely video... delicious receipe....
Beautiful location having food with fresh air at back in this type condition area have a great combination looks great
Being andhra person, I can proudly say “I love 💓 Karnataka food”. Thanks for all your videos, love to watch all of your videos.

I love the fact that you engage, not only the owner of the establishment in conversation, but the chefs and cooks in the kitchen as well. The descriptions of each dish is essential to the understanding of what your palate is sensing. Always well done, brother, well done!

The owner comes across as a vibrant, passionate and cheerful lady 👍Went there yesterday after watching your video here. Saw her interacting with all her customers , spoke to everyone and made them feel comfortable. Staff and their service was equally good. Wishing her all the success👍
Our review on food - Very frankly , nothing extraordinary. Tried prawn and squid koliwada, gobi manchuri, sliver fish fry, anjal tawa fry, kane fish curry rice. The chutney was refrigerated and did not taste fresh. Mint cooler (drink) and cheese naan was good👍
