authentic kodava, coorg cuisine, bengaluru, chicken curry, pandi curry, kadambuttu, akki otti, pork curry, koli bhartad, chicken fry, kaima unde, meatball fry, onake erachi, spicy smoked pork, veg curry, tender coconut pudding
The Coorg Food Company is Pavith Ponnappa and Pavitha Poonacha’s culinary ode to their Kodava heritage and ancestry, a labour of love with recipes gleaned from family and ingredients sourced from their estates in Coorg. The result, not surprisingly, are dishes brimming with authenticity and flavour. I catch up with them at their cosy restaurant and also savour many of the dishes that offer a stellar showcase of Kodagu’s rich culinary traditions. Hope you enjoy this episode, take care and stay safe.
Kripal Amanna,
Gourmet On The Road
Crispy Bhendi Fry
Juliennes of ladies finger coated in a simply flavoured rice flour batter.
Rs. 190 (usd 2.6) for a full portion, roughly twice my tasting portion
7/10
Vegetable Cutlets
You bite through the soft crunch of the crust into a tasty vegetable mash, one can detect the savoury sweetness of some fried onions in the mix.
Rs. 190 (usd 2.6) for 5 cutlets
7.5/10
Kaipake Fry
The bitter gourd is fried to minimise its bitter edge and then tossed in a mix of sliced onions, green chillies, chilli powder and fresh coriander with a heavy-handed drizzle of lemon juice that balances against the bitterness of the bitter gourd.
Rs. 190 (usd 2.6) for a full portion, roughly twice my tasting portion
8/10
Kodava Koli Bhartad
The chicken, cooked on the bone, is moist and flavourful with a potent peppery punch counterpointed with the tartness of the kachampuli, Coorg vinegar.
Rs. 240 (usd 3.3) for a full portion, roughly twice my tasting portion
8.5/10
Kaima Unde Bhartad
Crisp outside and juicy within, all that one tastes in these roundels is the flavour of the meat and the lush mouthfeel of the ghee. There is spicing, but subdued to celebrate the richness of the coarse meat.
Rs. 275 (usd 3.7) for 8 roundels
8.5/10
Onake Erachi
A traditional Kodava preparation of smoked pork, shredded and tossed with onions, chillies, spices and kachampuli. One can detect a faint ‘smokey’ veil on the bite.
Rs. 350 (usd 4.8) for a full portion, roughly twice my tasting portion
8.5/10
Pandi Bhartad
A preparation that breaks down readily in the mouth, releasing the flavours of the deep roasted Kodava ‘kartha’ masala. The fat has a deliciously jammy, sticky texture and has rendered well into the dish.
Rs. 285 (usd 3.9) for a full portion, roughly twice my tasting portion
9/10
Thith Pandi
A simple dish that draws inspiration from the erstwhile Kodava tradition of hunting, the meat is tossed simply in some paringe molu (bird eye chillies) and rock salt.
Rs. 335 (usd 4.6) for a full portion, roughly twice my tasting portion
8.5/10
Kootu Curry
A warming preparation of lentils and vegetables, wholesome and simple. Best mopped up with akki otti.
Rs. 195 (usd 2.7) combo with a choice of staple
8/10
Koli Curry
A delicious, homestyle chicken curry, the coconut milk in this preparation ensures the flavours are gentle and calming, quite unlike the robust pork dishes.
Rs. 235 (usd 3.2) combo with a choice of staple
9/10
Pandhi Curry
The signature dish here, the pandhi curry is stained dark with the kartha masala and the kachampuli, and the sort that breaks down in a hurry the moment you bite on it releasing the flavours of the masala laden with the fat of the meat.
Rs. 245 (usd 3.3) combo with a choice of staple
10/10
Puttu Platter
Rs. 155 (usd 2.1)
8/10
Tender Coconut Pudding
Rs. 100 (usd 1.4)

@Food Lovers TV when are you making a video on authentic TULUVA cusine?
There is a tamarind lentil bitter gourd curry common in Palakkad/Thrissur in Kerala which mixes the bitterness with the sourness of the tamarind and the tempering of shallots to make a good curry for rice.
Coorg is a feather to the Karnataka's cap. Karnataka people are proud to have Coorg with them. Love you Coorg!

Suuuuper sir
Pandi curry is one of my favourite curry. Coming from northeast and a pork lover it was always tough to find good pork recipes in Karnataka. But my visit to coorg made me fall in love with pandi curryo much that i got the masalas kanchanpalli n so on. There used to be one Coorgi restaurant in Brigade road which is now closed. It used to serve the most lip smacking pandi curry along with rice roti
Huge respect for your channel as you respecting everyone's food culture!!
Sir,My whole family loves every video of yours and we watch together. Love from Odisha.

Hey Kripal Also do Try "Chandrappa Hotel" in MSR Road, Mathikere.
The Hotel is well known for Karnataka Pork Cuisines For Serving About 20-25 Recipe's..
Totally agree about Chandrappa hotel. When I use to study in MSRIT, Chandrappa hotel was favourite adda over week ends. They serve delicious pork cuisines. Still during my every visit to Bengaluru, I will never forget to taste my favourite dishes at Chandrappa...👌👌👌
Lovely to see the owners talking passionately about the food they serve👌
I would really like to see all your episodes air on TLC channel, along with shows like Food paradise, so that we can share our culinary knowledge to the world

Kripal I follow very few vloggers, in food you are one of em, the best thing about you is your gentlemanness and eagerness to learn with great humility, which we lack in today's society.its rare..carry on wishing you all the best all the way from Kerala ..
Hats off, I had tried the smoky one made in one of my cousins house. It is epic!!!
Been there a couple of times, the food here rajes back to Coorg estate. What I like the most is the little window opening out...reminds me of the wooden windows that open out to coffee estate..black coffee with jaggery and ginger is awesome
Authentic to the core and humble 🙏 wish we could visit one day 🥰

A vintage video. Coorg located strategically in the Western Ghats bordered by Kerala. Plenty of coconut palm, koddam pullee & hogs in those forests. The lady is the epitome of intelligence and hospitality in those regions.
It is Not Koddam Pullee. It is Kachumpuli.
What
David Attenborough is to documentary film narration, Kripal is to food videos!!
This episode was certainly delicious.......next time i want more Karela/Bitter-gourd footage, tthats mah fav.

Regards all the way from Madikeri for excellent presentation of coorg delicacies. One of the best shows of late
This is the BIG DADDY OF ALL RESTAURANTS . Their Pork Pandi is the cherry on the cake . Their desserts are the piece de resistance , too . The rice flour roti , the string hoppers and the rice dumplings are tremendous to dunk into delicious stews . ' A PERFECT TEN ' like Nadia Comaneci 's acrobatics ! If I ever go to Coorg , I am going to sup and dine here . Thanks Kripal Amanna for showcasing Kodava Cuisine . You are truly ' manna ' in the delightful desert of the Food World .
Your explanation is a poetry sir❤️

Like it and tempted to eat
All foods very delicious superb yummy
Great video...✨😊
Been there once (and was looking forward to it too) and I really feel neither the food nor the service was something to look forward to. The food was definitely reheated, including the kadubu, and this is the only place I have seen where there was more bone than meat in some pieces of pork. The place isn’t exactly comfortable too.
