While concentration camps sometimes used prisoners for slave labor, the goal of them was to kill the prisoners either quickly or at least withing a year or two. People who had slave actually intended to keep them alive for years and perhaps even make money off of their children. Both are terrible things, but they are not the same. Its the difference between being treated like a cow at a factory farm and a bull in and abattoir.

Juan was also a famous painter, though most of his works were lost to time. He was freed in 1650. The painting is by his former owner, around the time of his freedom.

I read a book at my children's elementary school years ago. It was a story about Christmas on a plantation before the Civil War. Festive until the day after Christmas, when a young child of a slave family was taken and sold to another plantation. I have never been so angry and saddened. I'm a white woman. Thank you for your series. I just subscribed.
Seem to remember that Emma was pursued by some of Washington's relatives after Martha's death. Washington's will stipulated that all his slaves were to be freed on Martha's death, Martha had them all freed shortly after Washington died because she feared that one of them would kill her to free all the others! Emma was not freed by this action as she was a run away, the relatives placed adds in newspapers offering a reward for her but she remained free for the rest of her life.

Love the time warp feel to this. Many of us have lost touch with our rural traditions in the busy modern world. My Scotch-Irish Ancestor arrived in Philadelphia in 1770. Never left Pennsylvania, dirt farmers in Butler County. Hilly country, small farms, no plantations, ten kids, no slaves. 116th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Irish Brigade, Army of the Potomac. Fredericksburg, Antietam, Malvern Hill, Petersburg. Love good reenactors. We do a Hudson Bay Company Trading Post, Fort Nisqually, here in the NW Territory now known as Tacoma.
Please do an episode on escaped slave Ona / Oney Judge whom GW chased after for some 16 years. She was eventually 'found' in the North. Reported on back to GW. Through an 'emmisary' he had NERVE to try and negotiate w/ her to return (to slavery) of her own accord. Luckily, she saw through the trap that it was, stayed where she was at and (paraphrased) told 'said emissary' "H to the NO". It's a good thing she did. Otherwise, later citizens such as ourselves would have never known her story and she would have been lost to history.

The author even gave a talk on the grounds of the Washington estate. Anyway, if you look up the book you will find info on her story. Enjoy!! Funny aside during their lifetime the Washington's naturally enjoyed a fair amount of privileged status and comfort. They were seen as 'benevolent 'stalwarts' of their community. Yet at the time of Washington's death (and fearing reprisal's from the will-provisioned freed slaves) -- Mrs. W -- both out a sense of grief and fear for her own personal safety -- retired to the 3rd floor of their home; rarely coming down from there fearing a slave uprising. Now, ask yourself this if they were so good and such model citizen's why was she expecting her property to up and revolt? Just some food for thought.

Fredericksburg, Antietam, Malvern Hill, Petersburg. Love good reenactors. We do a Hudson Bay Company Trading Post, Fort Nisqually, here in the NW Territory now known as Tacoma.

I'm getting chills from every single episode. Although the humor is brilliant, the reality behind these funny words is appalling.
I just watched all episodes today (found em today too). I wish there were more episodes to watch. These are so good.

Please do an episode on escaped slave Ona / Oney Judge whom GW chased after for some 16 years. She was eventually 'found' in the North. Reported on back to GW. Through an 'emmisary' he had NERVE to try and negotiate w/ her to return (to slavery) of her own accord. Luckily, she saw through the trap that it was, stayed where she was at and (paraphrased) told 'said emissary' "H to the NO". It's a good thing she did. Otherwise, later citizens such as ourselves would have never known her story and she would have been lost to history.

@@akatobi2002 There is a book out, called "Never Caught: The Washington's relentless pursuit of their runaway slave, Ona Judge" by Erica Armstrong Dunbar. It came out in 2017 -- I think. The author even gave a talk on the grounds of the Washington estate.
Anyway, if you look up the book you will find info on her story. Enjoy!!
Funny aside during their lifetime the Washington's naturally enjoyed a fair amount of privileged status and comfort. They were seen as 'benevolent 'stalwarts' of their community. Yet at the time of Washington's death (and fearing reprisal's from the will-provisioned freed slaves) -- Mrs. W -- both out a sense of grief and fear for her own personal safety -- retired to the 3rd floor of their home; rarely coming down from there fearing a slave uprising.
Now, ask yourself this if they were so good and such model citizen's why was she expecting her property to up and revolt?
