I thought I was going bald lol for like 2 years and it was just a cowlick on the back of my head I’d never noticed pushing my hair the opposite way I wanted it to (like you mentioned) making it look like I was thinning in one strange line. This is the best video on Cowlicks ever made. Thank you for helping me with my extreme ocd hair issues. This was great!
everyoen have them done worry lol u might mistake as somone who doesnt have it cuz of 2 things 1-they have thick hair 2- they have long hair which covers it
I don’t actually mind my cowlicks from a looks perspective cause they add a bit of volume to my fine hair. My issue is literally how they feel to my hand and how the make my hair feel. I get anxious BFRBs (body focused repetitive behaviors) and one of mine is not being able to tolerate the way my cowlick separates my hair and how it feels to my hand. My cowlicks in the back result in me fussing with them for HOURS uncontrollably because I just can’t stand that they exist. My hands will start to hurt from messing with them and I get so frustrated at times I just wanna rip my hair out from that spot. I regret shaving my head only because growing my hair long again has just brought to my awareness what a sensory nightmare my hair is. So I’m trying to reduce my cowlicks so I can literally reduce my mental distress and the physical discomfort of my focus on them. This video was really helpful, thank you! At least I understand them now.
you just described exactly what I’ve been going through for about a year now, every last detail, I’ve been thinking about it as BDD but the way you put it (BFRB) feels accurate as hell to me
Really great video, Andrew, thanks. I was forced to learn so much about hair when it came wanting to style my own because I have a very tricky head of hair to cut and style. I have a double crown and straight hair with multiple partings, and I had a slick back hair cut for many years which i only recently changed. But I was able to learn so much about hair simply because of how tricky my hair is to style. Your videos helped so much with that.
good video. i am female who prefers short hair, has THICK hair, cowlick, and hair at crown that grows straight out!! i very recently just decided to embrace it and i cut it (myself for now lol) very short at crown and i embrace the sticking out!
I have a cowlick right in the front where my mother wanted me to have the the the straight flat bangs that were fashionable at the time. She finally gave up and grew them out.
Cowlick is such a cute word!!! In German we just call them "whirl". My husband has about 4 cowlicks on the back of his head and is very frustrated 🙈 He basically styles his hair just wildly to cover up the cowlicks with their different directions!
Thank you! This was very helpful, I have long hair and a very strong cowlick that I've managed my whole life... now dealing with a little boy who has a cowlick on the hairline and in his crown I've been unsure about how to cut it. Looking forward to continuing to grow his hair a little longer in those areas to get a bit more control :)
so weird. i didnt have cowlicks until one summer when I was 12 I shaved my head down to a 1. When it grew back cowlicks everywhere. I've been maintaining for over 20 years but its probably because I never let my hair get long enough to be able to style it again. I guess one thing about covid is I have it longer than ever and I can style it like I used to.
I have one in the back that causes my hair to part off center to the right side of my head no matter what. I can try to slick it back and only one side will. Literally no hair style works
I mainly cut kids hair and deal with interesting growth patterns. Parents ask me all the time "will it go away as he grows!!" I have to educate parents every day on explaining this is where his hair wants to live, you cant force it the opposite way. Having two swirls on each side in the front hline is the trickiest for boys and most like it short. The bones in the nape can also be a challenge and cause a flare when a person is upright, chin down it lays. Unless the hair is long you have to do a tight taper. Thanks for posting this video. So much education on this subject that should be taught in schools. Thank you!
Yeah, I have known about my double crown since I was 10. My mum always got it cut super short because I was a boy, but then 2020 happened and I had this whole awakening and.. yeah. But now I have been growing my hair and the double crown cow lick combo is just destroying my confidence, haha.
My hair always stood up in the back. Years later I found out I have two crowns/whirls. My hair naturally wants to be a fauxhawk. It's difficult growing it out long enough to overcome this. What's funny is I'll part it on the left, but at a certain length it seems to part better on the right.

Most of the examples shown are around the back of the head. For me, i have a cowlick in the front side, when my hair is short, it forms a triangle shape and i got made fun of a lot during my childhood. Growing up once my hair gets longer, its not as visible.
Helpful video. I can see I need to grow my bangs longer. I have a quiff haircut and the bangs want to go back instead of vertical. Going back looks terrible from a profile viewpoint.
My cowlick in the corner of my forehead and it’s not good it makes my hair not stylable… have crazy curly hair and my hair grown kind of backwards in the hairline so I can’t have bangs and have a bigger forehead and it is a huge problem
@DanielWhiteVans Yh it's sad that it's like that but I just have it which is unfortunate. Is hair transplant the only solution or is there any other way where it could look thicker or much full. My cowlick is at the crown of my head just off to one side and is so big, it looks more like a bald spot. I wear my hair in a very short pixie, so trying to cover it is near impossible, but this is the style I want. No part of the cowlick sticks up, it looks more like the eye of a hurricane. @@winnie5367 mine is pretty much the same. The only hair stylist I've had worth a damn that took the time to learn my crowns told me that it's normal to have a single cowlick so he chooses the least aggressive of the two and decides to let it do its thing. He then cuts the hair so I can comb it in a direction that will cover the second and the line. This requires I get my hair cut bi-weekly but it's been working the last few months.

It’s annoying, and probably looks bad, but I figure I really don’t have to see any of it since it’s all on the top and back, lol.
What do you do when the hair on the top of your head is too thin to ever even think of trying to cover the cowlicks? I have about 4 or 5 of them - it's a nightmare. There's one we refer to as the epicenter - looks like an explosion and right below that is the great divide- where the hair on either side of this split, that takes up the entire back side of my head, grows in opposite directions!! @andrewdoeshair I never understood the direct correlation between the cowlick and sectioning. If you were to do a horseshoe section. Would you always consider the colicky and section based off splitting that?
It all depends on how much I expect the hair to bend after it’s cut. If it’s not going to bend much then I’ll be careful to part in/through/around the cowlick as needed to make sure I can cut each hair based on the way it will lay, but if it’s going to bend plenty then I part the hair as if there is whorl or cowlick
I only hate cowlicks on other people when they're the same as my cowlicks. If I see someone who has a short hairdo and their hair is sticking out at the neckline rather than hugging it, it looks awful to me. I want to wear a short style SO BADLY, but that cowlick would drive me batty.

My man Andrew here is the hair philosopher
My hair swirl is on the right and the navel direction is to the right too, where should I comb?
I have 4 cowlicks one back one at the fornt and one right back to the one front and a at my left I hate my hair i just want to have long hair but i cant
can I use a down perm on my cowlick?
@andrewdoeshair I never understood the direct correlation between the cowlick and sectioning. If you were to do a horseshoe section. Would you always consider the colicky and section based off splitting that?
It all depends on how much I expect the hair to bend after it’s cut. If it’s not going to bend much then I’ll be careful to part in/through/around the cowlick as needed to make sure I can cut each hair based on the way it will lay, but if it’s going to bend plenty then I part the hair as if there is whorl or cowlick

We're just like Abyssinian guinea pigs!
I have 2 cowlicks and it always sticks up
I only hate cowlicks on other people when they're the same as my cowlicks. If I see someone who has a short hairdo and their hair is sticking out at the neckline rather than hugging it, it looks awful to me. I want to wear a short style SO BADLY, but that cowlick would drive me batty.
my daughter has 4 head whorls. 3 at the top and 1 in front. I don't know why that much😅
Can a cowlick appear randomly
