    13:30 for the timestamp where he talks about the PSP3/Vita 2
    So normally I don't dive into rumors like this, but the prospect of a new Sony handheld is just too interesting for me to not talk about.
    The idea that Sony could make a new PSP, or PSVita, (and not just another PlayStation Portal), is admittedly quite exciting.
    So today I want to talk about how this could work, why I think Sony is going to do this, and what it could mean for a potential next generation PlayStation 6.

      I honestly think he is a layman and doesn't understand the tech development that is taking in place.... ps5 to ps6 will be a great leap or even ps5 pro given the specs ......this generation provided us with a taste of real time lighting and raytracing and even in this generation pc is able to play some pathtraced games like as cyberpunk ..... the next generation will be the generation of pathtracing you will see that all games will integrate real time lighting into the art style of the game like gta 6 with their rtgi and raytraced reflection and its the mid age of the current gen already... obviously after pathtracing what improvements can be made besides graphics since they are able to pathtrace the game without rasterization we have already reached a dead end in terms of graphics now for gameplay there could be more..........

    People should remember that PSP came out before PS3 and it was very close to PS2. So close they got to share the same ports. Today we already have a handheld that is quite a bit faster than a PS4 - Steamdeck. Getting last gen and some of current gen to run on handhelds is not uncommon.

      The PSP might have been a godsend for some developers not ready yet for HD, and it kept the PS2 alive while the PS3 has straggled due to CELL. Sony clearly Sony has a software problem right now with overspending to justifying the PS5 tech (kindda like the PS3 with the CELL) which lead them to bigger and less sustainable games. Developers would kill for another PSP-Wii situation while AAA try to think how they go forward.

    Considering the Steam Deck runs PS4 PC ports, wouldn't be surprising for a handheld to run PS5 and even scaled back PS6 games in a couple years. Like they said, just scale back some effects and run at 540p upscaled with hardware AI and aggressive anti-aliasing, it'll still look good on a small screen and from a couch.

    • @ThePaperKhan

      The steam deck is pretty versatile. Games that don't run very well, you can lower the graphics settings in game, then you can use a built in upscaling method called FSR. Pal world for example, isn't very well by itself on steam deck, getting 20-30 frames, but with FSR you get 60, and much better battery life and a cooler system.

      yes and no. im a very pleased owner of a deck since the first wave released. I love it. but it does not run ps4 games well. at least not demanding ones. I try to play neir automata, dmc5, sf5, shoot, even soul calibur 6 and mh rise. you need to drop the settings to the floor to get them to run even somewhat decent. thankfully im an indie game fiend so most my stuff is low demand so the deck runs it great. but lets be real. the deck isnt running high tier games at good specs, at all. even dameon x machina needs booty settings to run at a consistent 30, and that cellshaded stuff.
      I will end this book with me reassuring you, I do own a deck, and I love it. these are just facts

There were definitely third parties (mostly Japanese exclusives) and indies who kept it going past when Sony did but it couldn’t compete with the 3DS or even the previous Sony handheld (the PSP) sale figures and market share wise. • @bane2201
      @bane2201 5 місяців тому +5

      Yeah, dedicated handhelds are great. The DS library is the best of any system I've had (ignoring backwards compatibility), although the 3DS library is great too.
      That said, I think the DS was lightning in a bottle - it was really the first handheld that wasn't just "portable console but worse". The GB was "NES but worse", the GBA was "SNES but worse". The DS was _not_ "N64 but worse", and developers had fun with the gimmicks - see the Prof Layton series, the Ace Attorney series, Rhythm Heaven, TWEWY, 999, etc. None of those would've worked nearly as well on different hardware. And the DS era was the peak of the Pokemon, Mario & Luigi, and WarioWare series (fight me).
      But developing games is more expensive now, so developing games that Just Work on many systems is a much better idea for third-party devs. So developing on "weird" handhelds will be a tougher sell.
      That said, whenever I'm confident in my predictions I seem to jinx them - the invasion of Ukraine happened 3 days after I said that Putin definitely wouldn't invade Ukraine. I really _hope_ someone makes another left-field handheld that has a library on par with the DS or 3DS, so I'm trying to jinx this.
      (Yes, the Phoenix Wright games were on the GBA, and Rhythm Heaven was a sequel to Rhythm Tengoku which was on the GBA. But I doubt they would've gotten any traction in the West.)

  • @BlazeMakesGames
    @BlazeMakesGames 5 місяців тому +11

    An ironic drawback to the old Playstation portables is that they were trying to emulate higher end games *too well.*
    Nintendo found that the best portable games tend to be things you can consume in small chunks. At the very least being able to pause and resume the game without missing a beat despite extended breaks is key to making a portable game appeal to a wide audience. This is reinforced by just glancing at the mobile market. The most successful (and actually good) mobile games tend to be bite sized experiences you can easily play a quick round of in a few minutes.
    But PlayStation tried to sell their portable consoles as higher end devices with bigger more cinematic games like their home consoles. But if you're just riding a train on your way to work, you're not going to be in the mood for a big cinematic experience. You just want something fun to pop on for like 10-20 minutes to pass the time. And then 4 hours later when you're taking lunch you want to be able to resume where you left off seamlessly. With a bigger more cinematic game you might be in the middle of a big flashy cutscene when you need to stop playing and then 4 hours later when you resume you might forget what was happening and lose the plot a bit.
    The genius of the Switch is that it fits whatever you want it to be. If you wanna have a big cinematic experience you can pop it in a dock and play it at home. If you wanna play a more quick fun little experience on the go, you can take it with you and play it that way. And Nintendo tends to design their games in a way that works for both styles of play. Just look at the new zelda games for example. While on the go you can focus on just clearing a shrine or a korok puzzle as a quick little experience. Then when you get home you can focus on a big dungeon for a more cinematic experience.
    But Sony's games, especially in the last couple generations, are only leaning even harder on this big epic AAAA-tier cinematic experiences, and those are just antithetical to a portable market. So while yeah being able to run any PS4 or even PS5 game on a portable might be a nice gimmick, I don't really wanna play a game like the newer God of War games or the Horizon games and whatnot on a portable console. I love those games, but I want to enjoy them in my home theater on a big 4k screen where I can be fully immersed for hours, not on a noisy bus where I can only enjoy it 20 minutes at a time.
    And another big problem is that any portable console, switch included, needs to be brought with you specifically for just gaming purposes. And that is a big reason why mobile gaming will always continue to dominate. Any handheld console is going to be a bigger clunkier device that has fewer functionality than your phone. So you're not always going to bring your console to work or whatever. But you'll always have your phone on you. So I think that trying to chase after the portable market to compete with mobile games is kind of a fruitless endeavor.
    Imo the best solution for gaming is the Switch Model. You get the best of both worlds without having to commit to either that hard. And everyone buying the console is on the same page. Having an entire secondary device that you now have to support in addition to your main console when people already have smart phones is just not smart imo. If they put out a PS6 and a PSP3, I'll probably just buy the PS6 and ignore the PSP. But if the PS6 *was* the PSP3 then we might be talking.

    • @Wozza365
      @Wozza365 5 місяців тому

      That is contrary to how well the Steam Deck is selling. Which is huge and made for those big games. But the great thing about being compatible with a whole library of PC games is that you have access to AAA and indie games alike. And having access to pretty much the whole library of PS5 games right away would mean similar. There's plenty of those style of indie games on PS/Xbox stores too and it actually gives them a better chance to shine for the reasons you explained. They'd probably be able to run at higher resolutions than the big games which probably wouldn't be running even at native 720p.
      You're also forgetting that mobile has some HUGE games that are FPS etc. COD Mobile, PUBG Mobile etc are all very big. There's clearly big demand for those kinds of games even on an awkward mobile touchscreen. Not every opportunity to play portable games is 10 minutes on a bus or in the lunch room. It's playing for 4 hours on a flight or a long train journey, it's playing on the sofa while your partner watches a movie, In bed when you're sick or in the garden on a nice Sunday afternoon. The Steam Deck opened up all those possibilities to me, and I've played the 'big' games in all those scenarios at some point so far. I can't remember the last time I actually played a game on my gaming PC. It's literally just used for browsing now.

    The big issue I see with just dumping the PS4 library on a handheld is the same issue a TON of Switch games have: tiny text. Even some first party games are nearly unplayable on a Switch lite because developers don’t bother to scale text up for smaller screens. A lot of people have trouble playing in tablet mode due to microscopic text, so if Sony's going to release a handheld to play games made for the TV, they’re gonna have to don something to make those games readable.

    I hope this works, but I don't think it will unless Sony either axes their console division or they make all their new exclusives run on the PSP3. Sure, if they make it play PS4 games at launch that'd be great, but consumers probably want a system that'll get new releases. The 3DS played DS games at launch, but it still had a rocky start. The Vita played PSP and PS1 games at launch and had great hardware, but it flopped.
    The Switch is doing well partly because Nintendo is only developing games for _one_ system, and because it's powerful enough that other devs can port games to it (even if it often requires graphical sacrifices).
    If Sony made a system with that mindset and made it roughly as powerful as the next Deck model (so that other devs would port to it), it could do _really_ well. But I just don't see the "chasing two rabbits" approach to hardware working anymore.

      This. I think there's one really smart person at Sony who was like, "Steam deck... oh shit that's just what consoles will be in the future." and is trying to pull them in that direction, but there's old heads in executive positions who are still fighting the previous war of consoles and handhelds are separate.
      It really goes to show how bold and savvy Nintendo's decision was to make an underpowered (even for the time) console handheld hybrid.

      @@ZaLewdWarudo He doesn't speak for _you,_ but he definitely seems to speak for the market, just look at the numbers. The PS5 launched Nov '20 and crossed 50M units in Dec '23. The Switch sold 52.6M units from Jan '21 to Oct '23, and it was _already_ nearly 4 years old (turned 4 in March '21).
      Also, you said you have "zero interest in handhelds". That's the point! Hybrid consoles hit both demographics.
      People who have zero interest in _handhelds_ but want to play Nintendo games would buy the Switch because it can be played as a console.
      People who have zero interest in _consoles_ but want to play Nintendo games would buy it because it can be played as a handheld.
      So Nintendo only needs to allocate resources to one system, and they don't alienate either audience. Honestly, it's such a good model that it almost seems like it'd be difficult to mess up. I'm not a Nintendo fanboy at all - in fact, I _hope_ other hardware developers learn from them. The cost to develop games is rising, as is the cost of hardware. It'll be impossible to justify developing games that cost $100M+ if they're locked to one of two systems made by the same company.

      @@bane2201 Thank you for putting up the wall of text informational response so I didn't have to.
      I think only AAA cutting edge graphics games are rising in dev costs to try to maintain their market of "only we have the good graphics", everyone else is just getting clever or focused at this point. Look at Baldur's Gate 3's estimated dev budget of $50-$100 million for a massive multi-game sized release. Still realistic, still looks good, but it's not bleeding edge graphics. Or RE2make or RE8, probably a similar budget for great graphics but they're not bloating their scope. It's really just the massive "Make all the money in the world" business model games that complain about how much their games cost to make.
      Games are at a weird point where good planning in AAA dev is beating budgets in terms of quality.

    Two of the biggest things that will make it successful.
    1. Backwards compatibility. If it has a disc drive for reading PSP games and maybe mini blu-ray discs for new media in THAT format, and a card slot for vita games, in conjunction with new media software that's NOT proprietary.
    2. Portability/Battery Life. The biggest thing about the PSP was its portability, and battery life. Some games gave upwards of 8 hours of gameplay in one session, depending on the game. Same for the Vita. If SONY can get these two things down the RIGHT way, they will have MASSIVE success with a new handheld.

Like physics or a dense area where NPC’s have schedules and your choices are more than a binary result. An SSD is great for cutting loading times, but I can’t imagine new tech really doing much other than “more/better” than unique features that were previously incapable.

      @@shrub9677 That's kind of my point. It's really just "more" not anything really new. It's not like you couldn't have a ton of things on-screen today either. Days Gone had a bunch of zombies on-screen while still being graphically sharp, and that was PS4. It's just that studios mostly don't care about doing that kind of stuff. But also... there's still a breaking point. You can only ever add "so much" content too because budgets and man-power is limited. Some games already have hundreds or even 1000 devs (contractors) working on it and we still just get cookie-cutter open-world games where a lot of the content isn't that interesting anyway.
      The tech is already there to do amazing stuff, it's that the attention isn't put into areas that matter. Instead of a smaller (but still fair-sized) environment with interesting quests and rewards, it's a ridiculously huge area where you have to grind enemies for minor upgrades. It's funny that JRPG's got criticized for requiring grinding low level enemies just to be good enough to complete the campaign... only for Western devs to do that with their open-world games. Except it can be optional (tough it adds up to be a lot of the content), and instead of getting EXP you're getting an animal pelt or some kind of currency. The imagination of people from 30-40 years ago has been possible for a while, but instead the ability is being squandered.

    I don't think handhelds are really going to be viable until we're finally running everything on ARM or an ARM successor. Which hopefully that comes soon, everyone seems to be ramping up ARM PC offerings for when the Microsoft-Qualcomm deal ends in 2025, especially as Apple is proving viability year over year with the M platform, and that platform definitely is far from the upper limits of what ARM can do. Performance efficiency is a very important metric, and any handheld will more or less be DOA if it doesn't meet efficiency metrics, remember that this is a conversation about generalized consumer products and not an enthusiast niche that handheld PCs currently cater to; x86 is just too much of a power hog, and a generalized consumer will absolutely shit on an x86 handheld due to lack of battery life, I mean this issue is already bad enough with laptops that have much larger batteries at a much lower performance tier, and x86 is too old for some new microarch to give an ARM-like performanc/power efficiency. It's essentially ARM or nothing at this point, and we need a massive industry shift at that point, I'm not even sure if gen 10 will buy into it. ARM on both sides of the console-handheld line would also make scaling between the two super, super easy; hell, at that point you could even go handheld-only with a powered dock that provides home console performance via scaling and clustering, which might as well be the end goal for once ARM is fully adopted. The whole mobile threat is probably the pivot point where ARM gets fully adopted and handhelds become the norm, this at least closes the gap in a way where it's lower-power phone or higher-power handheld, again with the potential of a powered dock for home-console use. But again, I just don't think this will happen until gen 11 at the earliest, unless AMD, or whomever, has a multi-generation ARM chip that is otherwise viable for this use, but again ARM PC chips won't prove viability until 2025 and I doubt any of these companies have spent R&D on multi-generational platforms when these platforms otherwise see no use, unless everyone's just looking at what Apple has been doing and is planning on emulating their generational progress within a first gen chip that is proven viable day one so that the console brands immediately adopt it for gen 10; but at the same time, gen 10 has already been in some state of development for awhile now, unless ARM is already adopted we're unlikely to see it, and much less so on the handheld side of things and the scalar methodology of handheld-console side of the arguments.
    Gen 10 will probably be an uninteresting change, more of the same, just a reflection of the otherwise current tech seen in the industry. Gen 10.5 is probably the earliest hope of anything interesting. Gen 11 is likely where we'll see actual major changes, but potentially not the endgame of a handheld-console scalar via a clustered dock. Gen 11.5 might produce that, but gen 12 is likely where we'll see that kind of shift. Apple, Nintendo, and the threat mobile gaming provides are really the only factors that would push this kind of timeline earlier, given viability of the various platforms and what the major two have yet to adopt, maybe with a slight boost from the handheld PC market; though again with a change to ARM we'll have to see how things actually change and judge from there, but I think gen 10 is pretty much set in stone at this point.

    I have a playstation vita and I love mine. I still use my ps vita whimsu because it's the only handheld that is actually portable and fits in my jackets pocket. I get to play games like god of war and little big planet in Uber and that's cool.

    I would argue that the only thing wrong with the ps vita was the stupid m2 memory cards. any thing that had one of those as the only form of expandable storage pretty much on launch. you could argue that the vita sold as well as it did in spite of the m2 card. the prices of those things were horrid and because the card is the same size as a micro sd its was not possible to make a micro sd to m2 adapter like you could get back in the psp days.

    Sigh... I always wanted the PSP. Anyway, I wonder if Sony is ripping a page out of Valve's book. The Deck did build upon the concepts that Switch introduced and was able to strike a good balance between power and efficiency in order to play AAA titles on a handheld. Some further clues to back Sony may be going this route is the fact that many PlayStation games ported to the PC have been officially verified to on the Deck as well. Using the Deck is a test bed makes absolute sense.

    • @bane2201
      @bane2201 5 місяців тому +2

      Yeah, the Deck has a kinda similar model to the Switch - both of them are powerful enough that devs will want to port games to them, and it's fairly easy to port games to them.
      I just kinda doubt it'll work for Sony in this case, since both of those have selling points that the PSP3 wouldn't have unless Sony axed their console line:
      The Switch is Nintendo's only hardware, so they're focusing all their development on one system. If you want Nintendo exclusives, you get a Switch. It's also powerful enough to run graphically intense games, even if porting them requires sacrifices.
      The Deck has a _huge_ library - 13K games "Playable and Verified". That's nearly double the Gameboy to the 3DS combined (~6800) and almost as many as the PS1 to PS4 combined (~13900). Valve isn't making exclusives, but if a developer is launching on Steam anyway, why wouldn't they "port" to it? Even if the game engines they use don't support Linux, Proton makes it really easy to get games running on it - it's barely even porting. But Sony can't really get this selling point, since it's more of a side effect of Steam being the largest PC game store.
      I think if Sony followed Nintendo's lead, that might work - make this the "PS6 Portable", have a dock and lower the barrier to release games. I just really don't think Sony would cut their console division entirely, which I think they'd need to do for this to take off. If they try to split their development between the PSP3 and PS6, it'll end up like the Vita.

    • @77wolfblade
      @77wolfblade 5 місяців тому +2

      The of valve is they had already a tonne of games on their store all they have to do was develop a tool known as Proton to get games to work. We need to see if Sony could do something similar or they're going to just develop exclusive games full for it. Which could be more of a disadvantage.

    Sony has previously shown with PSP that it's possible to make a handheld that's basically a portable version of the current home console. I wouldn't be surprised to see their new handheld playing PS5 or PS6 games.
    Nintendo's dominance of the handheld market conditioned people to think that all current-gen handhelds could only run games equivalent to a console from a generation or two ago. Thing is, Nintendo never really cared about their hardware being in line with its peers (SNES and Gamecube excepted) and leaned much more on their IP.

    • @EggFighterXB-
      @EggFighterXB- 5 місяців тому

      The N64 was the most powerful of it's generation too. (64-bits against the other 2 being 32-bits)
      But the Genesis beats the SNES in some aspects, so they were close to each other (compare Kirby's Dreamland 3 with Ristar to see the best visuals of the 2 consoles).
      But you're right, the Nintendo handhelds were 2 generations behind (GBC,GBA,DS,3DS) while Sony's and Sega's handhelds were close (PSP, Psvita) or in the case of Game Gear and Nomad, just straight up WERE the last gen consoles.
      So a future Sony handheld being close to PS5 hardware should be expected.

      I love the Deck, but it _is_ a more niche device than the Switch, and their sales data back that up. The Deck sold 1M units in the first 8 months after release (Feb-Oct '22). The Switch sold 6.7M units from Apr-Sep '22 (only 6 months), when it was 5 years into the cycle, and it sold more (6.8M) from Apr-Sep '23.
      Valve hasn't said anything since then other than "multiple millions", but unless the Deck's sales have nonupled the Switch is outselling the Deck 6 years post-release. Definitely doesn't seem like other people view it as obsolete.
      The Switch has the benefits that the software is foolproof, it's in real-world stores, Nintendo's developing exclusives for it, and it has more name recognition for families deciding what gifts to give. I think most gamers don't emulate, and many of them don't have "huge steam libraries" because their libraries are on PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo consoles.
      I've stopped using my Switch since I got my Deck, since I emulate and have a large library. But looking at the numbers, I'm in the minority here. What I _personally_ think is best isn't reflective of what other consumers buy.

    • @bane2201
      @bane2201 5 місяців тому +1

      I love my Deck, but it's more niche. It has great hardware and has a _really_ high "ceiling" for more tech-savvy users (e.g. can set up emulators, maximize battery life, and debug potential issues). But most gamers don't emulate, and many don't even have huge Steam libraries. There are many people who want something like the Switch or 3DS - a system that Just Works (tm).
      Look at the numbers of units sold - the Deck hasn't made the handheld market obsolete. The Deck sold 1M units in the first 8 months after launch (Feb-Oct '22). The Switch sold 6.7M units from Apr-Oct '23 (6 months), and it was already 6 years old. We don't have concrete data for the Deck's sales past then, only that it's sold "multiple millions". Unless the Deck's monthly sales have nonupled, the Switch is outselling it.
