Please keep making videos. Your content is excellent! I had just changed my PSP screen to the adaptive IPS and was wondering if maybe I made the wrong choice. Thanks to your video I'm happy to say that the adaptive IPS is a very good choice.
22:14 I watch at 1.5x speed as a non-native speaker I understand you perfectly fine. You are probably the best PSP YT content creator rn, the amount of effort you put into something so niche is insane, love it I got a PSP 3000 recently because I only ever had my childhood 2000 model, and yeah the interlacing issue is very bad in some games, I wonder if an IPS screen for it is even possible, since the original screen is so unique, I hope so. Also I didn't know it had a unique Color Space setting at first, thankfully some guy on UA-cam told me about it, when I complained about how the colors didn't seem better than on 2000 :p
Thank you for the support : ) I talked about the wide gamut mode on the 3000 but it didnt make the cut as i had to rerecord that segment a couple times lol
I been waiting for this video, and it was well worth the wait! This is the most in depth video on psp screens on UA-cam, can’t wait to drop a new display in my psp, definitely getting the matte display. I’m excited to see what it looks like with the glass lens on it!
Seriously, Sir, please keep up the good work! Your videos are incredibly helpful and informative, and I don't think that anyone on UA-cam has EVER done this good a job covering PSP hardware upgrades [including that super exhaustive battery video]! Cheers!
Purchased the matte display from your link based off your video and comparisons. Thanks for the helpful info!! Looking forward to upgrading this and making it a powerhouse.
Glad it was helpful! Good luck with your install, if you are not planning on soldering it (or going to a phone repair shop for a quick job) then try to scratch the contacts with a screwdriver that you need to bridge followed by cleaning them for the best chance of the silver paint to work and keep working : )
Damn bro, I recently bought a street version of the PSP and I noticed that problem on the screen... I thought it was my unit, but with your video I see that it is something from that series of consoles... Your video is very illuminating 🤘🏻
I bought a clear sheel for my PSP and after that I saw your project Smokey. Right now Im thinking to order a clear black but I’m on a really budget. And this video the Matt display is very expensive its like duble the price. I’m in a real pain thinking what should I do 😅😅 Ooh and thx for this super good videos. I’m from Turkey and there is 0 content like this.
I would hold off from buying a clear shell, if you dont have the budget i wouldn't try my luck with these third party shells, they have tons of issues, and it will never feel as nice as the original, at most I can definitely recommend you get a third party faceplate replacement, problems are minimum, less headache, cheaper, and allow you to do the next mod which is the glass lens upgrade : )
@@TotalKommando I had a dream like this PSP when ı was a kid. I got very cheap PSP 1000 and the housing is on a very bad condition. That’s why I’m doing the clear housing swap. I decided to buy the black clear housing like you and get the matt screen with a glass lens. I will sell the all clear housing when its arrived. Thx for the reply!
It's amazing how your channel goes in depth with everything regarding the psp, it's my favourite handheld, and I'm always eager to try the latest mods on the units I have! I really appreciate all the work you do, you saved me several $$$ by reviewing all those chinese products
Recently discovered your channel and I gotta say the quality and details you provide in your videos along with great editing and conciseness in conveying the information is top notch. I'm learning a lot from your videos and do definitely intend to try out your projects once I get some spare time and some budget to spend on the psp hobby. I didn't know that so much could be done to make the experience so much better with this console that's decades old. Its amazing! Really Appreciate your work!
Thank you for appreciating the work : ) Get ready for another one, later this week I will release my battery testing video thats been 3 months in the making lol
can i just say this is a perfect video, literally. you mentioned literally everything there is to know about IPS displays. this is also the only video i have found mentioning the E1000 IPS, which i didn’t even know about, i liked and subbed!
Post Notes: - Matt IPS is not a fingerprint magnet (good for lensless faceplate build) - Sorry for the lack of uploads, this video took way too long to make during a busy time for me. - It was originally going to be 3 different videos but since so much of it overlap, it ended up being one. - The intro is way too fast I know : |
Your intro is perfect! Tiktok has made a lot of us attention deficient, I appreciate your speedy explanations. If it wasn't for your video I would have no idea about that silver paint. My screen came with no instructions and me and my coworkers couldn't figure out wtf the needle was. I thought it might of been some flux. I just put it aside.
Dude I just want you to know what you do is awesome!! I love how much information you give and how much you go in depth. This video was awesome thank you very much!!! Also I have a problem with my screen, It cuts off the top while on the bottom there is black. I'm not sure if it has to do with the screen or the soldering but if you have any thoughts pls let me know! (p.s. The soldering i did was just a dot, Which is my guess for the problem)
Try pressing on the dot you made with your fingernail or something plastic and pointily, to check, if it fixes it self, then you may wanna try and cleanup and try again. If its already dry it will be tough but if its only been an hour or two, it may have not set in yet to start working. If that is the case and you haven't cleaned the contacts before applying then it would be a good time to try that.
This is a video i would have really needed half a year ago. Not because of the IPS display comparison, but this is one of the only good videoes i have seen going comparing the screen of the different PSP models that also includes the PSP Street! I got into the PSP a couple of years ago with the PSP 2000, however i didn't really like very much. Mostly because of the horrible Ghosting of the screen, and i wasn't much of a fan of the thin formfactor with the glossy finish. So when looking into the other options everyone pointed me to the 3000 model, however the intelacing of that model didn't seem ideal either, and it still had the exact same formfactor as the 2000. Then since i live in europe, i also looked into the PSP Street, however there are next to no reliable or good information about the PSP Street's screen anywhere, and especially no comparison videos. Because of the lack of info about this topic, what i ended up doing was getting both a PSP 3000 and a PSP Street, then i made a short comparison video myself that is up on my channel. Its nowhere near as detailed or well done as what you did in this video, but half a year ago there just wasn't anything going over this type of info. In the end i ended up keeping the PSP Street and sold off the 2000 and 3000. To me the PSP Street was just way more comfortable to hold and play on than the 2000 and 3000 models, and while the downwards viewing angle is not ideal, its still way better than dealing with the ghosting of the 2000 model.
what a great video. learned way more about these replacement screens from this, than from any other video from bigger creators out there! great job. also i've got an intriguing question - do the IPS panels drain more energy than original displays? on one hand they are way brighter, so it kinda makes sense for them to drain more battery, but on other hand they're way more modern tech compared to the ancient original LCD's, so it also makes sense for them to be more energy efficient.
Thanks : ) Im actually in the process in doing an indepth battery testing video, and one of the tests im doing is trying to compare IPS to the OG displays. Its a very hard test to do because every battery and console Im finding consumes different amounts of power ( still need to do more testing ) Long story short, as far as my current testing goes, they are either about the same or 30 mins better in terms of battery life over the OG
@@TotalKommando that's awesome to hear. looking forward towards the video on batteries, as this is probably the most important topic for all psp owners.
i did the conversion just this day..(matt display) one thing to mention : the matt display is a little to small for the steel frame of the psp to hold it /doesn t sit tight like the old one. it is secured a bit by the buttons holder/frame. also i was fiddeling with the small cable of the ips display, and broke the secure latch of the connector housing. so be aware that these small latches are easy to break.(they re aged as well) i secured the cable with a tiny drop of screw secure clue. works like a charm
Nice, yea its fine, once the top and bottom padding is added its sits there safely. Yea those latches are always a gamble, I got several damaged connectors on several consoles, I just put a piece of kapton tape to thicken them up and secure them with more to keep them in place lol
Thanks for your video! I don't think the video shows how tiny the two pins you need to bridge are, especially for my old eyes. I managed to do it, but a magnifying glass is definitely recommended.
subscribed as my 3000 has a stuck pixel. Been planning a replacement for a decade now, but I'll keep waiting for an IPS instead of taking my risk with a bad aliexpress display.
I see you are a Generals fan lol People in the past have tried to massage the pixel back into working order, its time consuming and usually eventually leaves a mark around the massaged area, also you could run one of those color flashing videos or apps to help it out
@@TotalKommando I've tried the the pixel flashing method but it hasn't helped. It also has slight burn-in in grey screens, no idea what the previous owner did to it. I've gotten used to it over the years, but a new IPS display would be awesome. My first priority is getting my eighth new battery as my current one draws 1% per minute. I bought an Ostent as per your video. Thanks for that.
Thank You for your useful guide, now i'm using 1mm tape foam under my screen and it fit perfectly, i hope it will reduce the dust for a long long time 😎👍
Fantastic video, this is the kind of detail I wanted to see before pulling the trigger on one of these displays. That said, I noticed you have the same colorimeter I do; did you happen to take any readings on other aspects of display quality, such as color accuracy, black level etc.? I just recently finished compiling readings myself on an original 1000 and 3000 using Calman, and would love to know how they compare beyond just light output.
Thank you, I wish calman licenses were cheap, unfortunately they are not so was never able to get those juicy readings even though thats what I originally bought my colorimeter for
@@TotalKommando I totally understand, that’s the same reason I’m running the 2022 and not the 2024 update lol. I’m not a content creator, but I’ll post my findings at some point.
I love all the videos on the psp and have watched them multiple times! I just wanted to say I think your missing the point of the matte display when you did the light reflection/visibilty test with the screens off. The matte display will beat all the other screens in reflection because it's not supposed to reflect light. This gives you better clarity when viewing in the sun or bright light with the screens on. This is also part of the reason the matte display appears ro be the brightest screen of the bunch.
Eyy, I used to like/prefer matte displays but since then I have switched, I could careless about reflections, been using a glossy oled tv as a screen for the past year and half, as well as recently upgrading my thinkpad x1 to a glossy 1440p ips display, and I can tell you, the loss of contrast, brightness, and color on the matte is no longer worth it for me. That being said, the PSP has a glossy lens ontop so it kinda defeats the purpose of a matte on a psp unless you run without one : ) And for matte brightness testing, if we remove the matte coating we would measure a slightly higher number not the other way around. Its brighter because its way brighter than the other models not because its matte.
@TotalKommando thanks, I appreciate the feedback, love the entire psp series. I just fell in love with the new Samsung G8 OLED monitor and it came matte. Since its been working out well, I decided to get the matte psp display you reviewed. Also I kinda figured that matte screen for the psp was just brighter to begin with as well, I just really appreciate not have images washed out by reflections as someones whos worked in the smartphone industry since the begining.
Thanks for the comparison. Unpopular opinion: I prefer 1000 stock. In terms of build quality, it has a premium look and feel. Regarding picture quality, it has more natural colors and a softer image. 3000 has the option to select between normal and wide color space in settings, which is good, but the picture looks a bit edgy and jaggy compared to 1000 for me. Never owned 2000, GO or Street models, so can't say anything about them.
Thank you for this excellent video, good Sir! I have a PSP 2004, and I want to do the same upgrade. Which screen upgrade would you recommend for that? Perhaps you could make a video like this for the PSP 200X also? *crosses fingers*
Wait, so the 3000, the only model many PSP enthusiasts would even consider buying, doesn't have an IPS mod? Why/how? Could you make a video about why this might be? That's truly shocking news if it's true. There must be something about the internals that makes it more difficult and/or expensive.
I have a theory that the interlacing on the 3000 was a hardware hack to support composite video output, and that if an IPS display ever came out for it, the interlacing wouldn't be removed
You may be right, hopefully its not as noticeable, later 3000 models came out with a better quality screen that has the interlacing a bit more under control. Also 2000 doesn't support composite? I got 4-5 different brands of HDMI video out cables to test in a future video, the only thing that bothers be last time I used video out, I noticed game performance takes a hit : (
@@TotalKommando That's right, the 2000 only supports the component cable in 480p. I haven't noticed any performance reduction with my LevelHike HDMI cable but I also haven't used it with that many games tbh.
@@dwindeyer I could swear I tried it with a component cable back in the day, because back then the 2000 was my primary. It was specifically with motorstorm arctic edge, it really pushes the hardware to its limits. Nearly a perfect identical PS2 port.
Honestly your video is fine with the talking and what not. Id rather u stay this way vs do what most big yters end up as with scripted as hell videos that sound boring af.
That's what I'm going to do for my white one (and maybe the black one too!!). I asked Total Kommando if putting a true glass panel on it may improve the quality of the colors and of the brightness too. Can't wait to read his answers!! Go E1000!! Go!!
thanx for the very good informations... (although you could have cool down the pace a bit :) i ll go with the matt one for my psp 1000. any info how much it affects the battery life?
As far as my current testing goes, either runtime will be the same or you will get more run time. I have a battery testing video coming out later this week, I have been working on it for the past 3 months...
3000 is my favourite & overall the best 😊 I have two of them. I also have the PSP GO that's tied in 1st place. Street model is cool but I rather have the few extra features of the 3000, it's a step up from 1000/2000 but not worth the compromise when it comes to the 3000 model. Also it's a Reddit/forum overstated thing that got blown up proper mass hysteria regarding the interlacing. Barely noticeable or merely doesn't exist at all but see as the screens get older being older tech the supposed "interlacing" becomes more noticeable. It's not even interlacing it's something completely different but i won't bore you. It's been debunked long ago. I have two different models from different years & the screens are different in colour tone, one is warmer & the other cooler so must have been a little/subtle update in the screens. Anyways great video 🔥 Happy gaming
I know what you mean, I have old models that have horrible interlacing, and newer ones that have drastically reduced it. My 3000 MH Edition is amazing to look at, truly a fantastic screen. They all tend to get a warm tone eventually but not a big problem at all. Sony has updated the screens on the newer / final 3000 models released but not everyone has those.
You can never have enough PSPs lol My main psp is still the 2000, transparent with 6 sound reactive leds, which I have a tutorial on. Sometimes I jump back and forth between that one and my restored rusted psp which i also have a video on. Im looking to finish the modding series so I can finally enjoy Project Smokey PSP once its done.
Love your channel. Did you have to align the IPS screen with the 1000? I had to put some small paper pieces on the lower left side so the screen isn't crooked when I put back the faceplate in. Also, with the matte one, I notice some light bleed at the top on mine. Have you had this with a build too? Thanks !
With mine, I didn't align anything, but I heard some people recently talking about the thickness of the padding being too much, perhaps they are shipping with thicker padding now. If you get light bleed line on clear shells, you can cover it with a piece of tape but if are talking about IPS glow then no I did not have that on any of mine.
This really gives me hope that the PSP 3000 will get a IPS mod "soon". I really wanted to daily a PSP 3K on my commute to school, but when I tried, I quickly realised that the screen is basically useless in sunlight... Which is unfortunate, because the 3K is at least for me the "perfect" handheld otherwise, its light, compact, looks great, plays the games I want and the overall feel is just amazing. Right now im stuck with my 3DS (very limited in terms of games I like) and Vita (way too big).
I love the videos you make about the PSP, it was one of my first consoles and I am very fond of it, I have a 3000 model that is more than 12 years old and the screen already has its faults, do you recommend a specific screen for a good quality replacement? Thanks in advance Translated comment, my English is not the best
Aftermarket screens have good visual quality, if they work, most come defective and are easy to damage. Best option in my opinion is a healthy good condition original 3000 screen
Hey Total Kommando, great video though I had a question about the matt psp screen. I bought one of these screens via your provided link, and it was indeed the matt one that arrived, though I have to say that I was fairly disappointed with the brightness level compared to my adapted IPS screen. Either I got a faulty unit, or there might be something wrong with my brightness? For I did notice that I can only increase the brightness in 3 stages on the matt screen, and my adapted IPS allows for 4 stages of brightness settings. Could I ask, how many brightness stages does your matt IPS screen have? 3 or 4? Thanks in advance, and great videos, they have been SO helpful!
Hey, I'll let you know once I dig it out of my psp graveyard, I installed it on my Project Smokey PSP which is sitting on standby in parts. But from what I know, is that the 4th stage which is the full actual brightness only comes on when you have the PSP pluged into power. The stages can be modified, using a very handy plugin called "Brightness 1.6". www.mediafire.com/file/kf54xdf0x0609xe/Brightness_Control_v1.6.zip/file This should allow you to manually adjust brightness to max and see whats going on, in my testing it works best with the slim models, as I found for some reason it slightly reduces the brightness on the 1000 models, but you may not even notice the difference, I only knew when I measured it with a tool.
@@TotalKommando thanks for the reply man, you were right, i was testing on an unmodified psp and I forgot that those things only go up by 3 brightness levels as default, was so used to my previous modified one. Thanks for your help again, the extra brightness on the Matt one looks great, I’m a sucker for a bright screen 😁
I'm still wondering why did the E-1000 get the IPS upgrade first instead of the PSP2k or 3k? :( It does give us hope but it seems the wait might be really long... By the way, thank you for the amazing in-depth video ! I learned so much about the IPS screens today thanks to you.
Yep its overclocked/333mhz/running at the original max speed of the chip, GTA is one of the games that greatly benefit from it. Sony decided it was a good idea to downclock the cpu to save battery lol
Im curious how different the two brightness versions of the adapted model are. I got the dimmer one since im sensitive to bright lights, and never take my PSP outdoors, so have no need for high brightness. If you were to make a follow up, I'd love to see how dim these screens go, as thats where I keep my brightness nearly all the time due to my sensitivity to brightness.
You can dim any screen model using a brightness plugin that lets you fine control each brightness level, so you can try that out and see how you like it. wololo.net/talk/viewtopic.php?t=41319 If I do make a follow up or get measuring I'll let you know and add it to the pinned comment
Thanks a lot dude, you answered questions i didn't know i had - Do you also have a recommendation for PSP2000 aftermarket screens? as i got one laying around that is completely wreckt
Epic : ) Sad to tell you that all 6 aftermarket 2000 screens I have purchased over the past several years have sucked horribly. Probably no one making proper ones, and probably coming from the same manufacturer. Dim, Dull, Lines, Defective, fragile absolutely not worth it if you want a solid 2000 experience, unless you just want it running and the screen is cheap enough then its worth it. My recommendation is if possible try your luck with a cheap as-is ebay psp from japan. Try to find a color that you can pull parts from to mix with your current psp for a 2 tone theme.
@@TotalKommando Yeah that's kinda what I figured out too, meh i think i'll just pull the trigger on one of them because the PSP 2000 is half shattered and it's better to have a trashy screen than none at all.. Any you would recommend (fully understanding that they're all bad)?
Wow thanks for this amazing comparison! Maybe i must buy me a 1000 or e1000 model and change the screen. On what for a system do you prefer mostly gaming, a normal psp or the psp go? And why?
I would go with the 1000 model, the E1000 IPS is only good if you have an E1000 and or the E1000 is the only model available in your local market. The PSP Go although it has a nicer looking screen in terms of pixel density and colors, the controls are not good for long sessions. So 100% go with the PSP 1000 Model despite having lesser colors, its much brighter, and has much clearer and sharper motion : )
Very nice, your pacing is fine. Plus, youtube lets us slow it down if needed. To be clear, the Matt 1000 ips you listed from AliExpress is a good buy?If so I will be going with the mat display asap.
I have the E1004 and I was disappointed to not have an IPS mod for it... Now, I have a VA mod... PUUUUUUREFECT!!! Installation is the easiest possible!!! Do you think that IF I put a true GLASS on it, it may improve the colors and brightness??
The stock screen is VA, its somewhat better than the 2000, but i dont like the viewing angles. Glass will definitely help if your current one isnt in mint condition
I have one of the Adapted screens. I have two of them. One is OK and no issue with the screen but the other one has issues with white screens where you see a lot of horizontal lines and noise. It's not visible with other solid colors but it's very annoying. Is there a way to get rid of that?
Seeing how the modded GameBoy scene is getting a lot of laminated screens options, it made me wonder. What if we could laminate the PSP screen to a glass lens! With something like the Matte Screen you might get all the advantages without the glaring from light sources.
GBA is getting mad third party support. TBH would rather have glossy any day of the week now, I dislike my "premium etched matt glass" on my SteamDeck, and have used glossy IPS or OLED displays for a long time now (recently a glossy 500nit ips laptop and my 55" tv i use as a monitor). The trade off of losing color pop is not worth it for me. Displays now are much brighter and colorful than ever before.
Its not impossible to do but hard to do perfectly, that layer is usually a polarizing filter, if you remove it, you will end up with a white screen that can only be viewed with that filter lined up correctly infront of it, so you would need to safely remove it first and cleanly install a perfectly cut glossy one : )
I'm surprised none of them have any issues with broken pixels. I've 2 PSPs and both of them have some broken pixels. It happened by both quite fast after purchase. The pixels are not dead (black), but they give it a wrong colour and brightness.
@@TotalKommando I've a 2000 and a 3000 both with the original screens. It happend with both within a year of use. They are not completely dead (black). They don't work as they should be, by giving the wrong output (colour and brightness). And with both it's with multiple pixels connected, like 4 pixels in a row (it looks like a Tetris building block). I've a couple of those. Anyway, I can replace it with a new screen if I want. It's not a big deal. I had bad luck with them I guess.
The original PSP1000 display has 4 brightness levels with the button on the PSP. So these videos don't show that, this could be the lowest setting. Do the other IPS displays work with the brightness button?
In the screen comparisons I tried to match the brightness to show the color differences. In the brightness measurements, I have done multiple units of the healthiest displays i have from each psp model, ensured they are at max brightness using a brightness plugin that lets me get full brightness as if I was connected to power. Yes the IPS Displays work normally with the brightness button, you can actually add more brightness levels or less using a brightness plugin that lets you customize everything, you can even get 80+ brightness levels
Please help!! Have a Psp Street, got an IPS screen, installed, the sound comes in, but the screen is black! Than removed the ips screen, instaled the old one, same thing. Not not even my old one dosent work. Why and how can i solve it? I dont know to solder or things like this.
You probably have blown your backlight fuse, you can look online where it is located, try to short it with metal to see if the display will work, or before you do that you can try shining a bright light close to the screen and try to see if you can see anything. You can probably go to a mobile repair store and ask them to fix the fuse or solder it.
In my battery testing video that was released later, I found no difference and if anything they are slightly more efficient. You can find the video here: ua-cam.com/video/1aXUrMIQ_Ls/v-deo.html There is a chapter for it, and you can checkout the test results yourself in the spreadsheet
@@TotalKommando Hmmm do you think I would be better off finding some one to perform the mod for me with the soldering? Or buy a soldering kit and learn how to solder. I really want that peace of mind that if i leave it in the drawer for a year it will still work.
@@dickyboy3001 Wouldn't hurt checking the prices if you are not reading for soldering. My best tip is to get good tools, good solder, good flux. Just need to go into a research rabbithole. I plan to do a video on basic soldering in the future.
I've got the awkward version for my 1000 and I get horizontal lines across the white PSP logo screen only. In game it seems to be fine 😄 And the ghosting is virtually gone, which is great. You can disable the PSP logo screen with a modded PSP btw.
i am getting a weird yellowing flicker on the picture and i pressed on the dry one but it didnt work so i am trying to figure out how to remove the paste after it solidifies
It can be tough, I ended up using a soldering iron to melt it, you should be able to soften it by heating up an old flat head screw driver with a lighter and going over it
@@TotalKommando not sure I had an guy from the flea market do it on front of me it took him 5 minutes and he did add a little rubber gasket around the screen maybe he pressed it down too tight in that one corner? I imagine I’d have to replace the lcd to fix it anyways so not too sure why I even asked in the first place heh it’s just very noticeable seeing a mostly dark screen then one park is much lighter
HI! if I put the piece of foam, when I close the shell, the display presses on the shell creating bright spots on the screen.. have you noticed this? (i have original shell) My matt display after 1 month of use has a slightly dark pixel on the side. Do you think I can get a refund on Aliexpress or can it happen and is it better to buy a pair and choose the best made one? It doesn't bother me much anyway but I want to have the perfect console.
The reason for the foam under the display is so it can push the display closer to the top and stop dust from getting in, as its thinner than the OG display. Combined with the foam ontop it makes it perfect without any extra pressure.. Out of the 5 IPS displays I got, non have any issues. I think the dark spot might be because of dead backlight led on that one side : | Yea I would contact them anyways, worse case you get another one :| Its most likely either a dead backlight led in that bottom corner or the solder contacts are weak, either way its hard to fix without damaging the display but you can try pressing the display corner between your fingers to see if it turns on the led while the faceplate is removed.
@@TotalKommando Yes, exactly, the IPS display is thinner and flexes. This is precisely why putting the leftover foam under the display with the original shell presses too much. I don't know if you've only tried with the custom shell. Using scraps of paper I solved it but I wanted to understand why you don't have this problem!! I was also thinking of looking for a 1mm steel panel so the display can't flex. The pixel is very strange, when I tilt the display it looks normal. the phone camera also reshoots the pixel normally. Thanks !!!
It could be that your phone camera software is doing things that can mask the uneven lighting, could be by having longer exposure than our own eyes and masking the dim area. As for the OG vs Aftermarket, I have just tested 2 things for you, one Aftermarket shell with OG faceplate & OG Shell with OG Faceplate, and in both cases it works perfectly fine without any uneven pressure. The only thing I can think of is the following: ua-cam.com/video/XVT2RHyB1Do/v-deo.htmlsi=7Gh14LHnM8OTCudF&t=527 There is a little plastic point that needs to feed through the subframe, if its not seated properly it can cause unevenness, or its possible that your subframe is warped?
@@TotalKommando Thanks so much for the reply. I checked, that piece of plastic is in the right place. The display when completely black at maximum brightness is very sensitive to any pressure on the edges. With the foam it presses too much, probably a matter of 0.1 mm. You can see a slightly lightened corner but this could depend on the thickness of the foam on the front of the display because it is elastic and therefore becomes less thick if you pull it before applying it, so I probably have one side of slightly thicker foam however it is not a problem I can solve this. Or I reassembled something badly but everything seems to be in place. I got another psp in better shape than mine for spare parts and faceplates so I can check if I've done something wrong when it arrives.
@@TotalKommando You're so great. The only thing I hated (lol) about your channel is how you messed my mind about the correct model choosing... I just did a reshell on my childhood DS Lite and I sadly do not own my childhood PSP anymore (dont even remember the model). Now I am looking for a project PSP in rough shape since I here where I live you can still score them for like 2-3 usd sometimes on flea markets. But all these PSP modding is so hardcore and wide compared to DS mods.
@@renguney lmao no you are. The biggest problem with owning a psp is never having enough, I used buy any psp that crosses my path for anything less than $20.
I bought the matte display, but it looks terrible, color accuracy is bad, there is a slight green tint to the display and the blacks are crushed. I thought the display was bad and got it replaced but the replacement has the same issues. The brightness and lack of ghosting was nice, but the awful color accuracy and crushed blacks make the display unusable to me.
I did everything in the video and it didn’t work the paint didn’t work and now my right dpad and thumb stick don’t work ima just throw everything in a drawer and call it a day
Late night projects for me usually end unfavorably, get some rest and come back to it later if thats the case. If you need help, you can find me on discord : )
@@TotalKommandoI fixed it after searching UA-cam I saw a lot of people having the same issue of only the right dpad not working even tho the contacts work when the face plate is off but when they put the plate on the dpad stop working and the solution was to take off the subframe and make sure it’s on properly fixed my thumb stick and dpad
Nice, yea subframe can be very annoying. The right trigger I would get a replacement rubber dome while you are at it, I would try shorting the contacts with an aluminum piece of foil, if it works then you may just need a rubber dome replacement, could also swap the rubber dome from the left side and see where the fault is
@@VR00100 🙂 It was VERY difficult to follow you, but thanks to you I did it on my PSP1004, with the model 1 motherboard, THE WORSE, the distance between points is like a pair of hair. THANK YOU VERY MUCH, I couldn't use the audio because my english is good but the time my brain translate a sentence....you are 20 sentences away :-)))) . But the video was enough in fact
i ordered 5 from aliexpress, all were fine, but depends on your luck, have seen a few people mention having defective units that needed replacement, you can also find them on amazon
Please keep making videos. Your content is excellent! I had just changed my PSP screen to the adaptive IPS and was wondering if maybe I made the wrong choice. Thanks to your video I'm happy to say that the adaptive IPS is a very good choice.
Thank you, comments like these keep me going knowing people out there are finding them useful : )
22:14 I watch at 1.5x speed as a non-native speaker I understand you perfectly fine. You are probably the best PSP YT content creator rn, the amount of effort you put into something so niche is insane, love it
I got a PSP 3000 recently because I only ever had my childhood 2000 model, and yeah the interlacing issue is very bad in some games, I wonder if an IPS screen for it is even possible, since the original screen is so unique, I hope so. Also I didn't know it had a unique Color Space setting at first, thankfully some guy on UA-cam told me about it, when I complained about how the colors didn't seem better than on 2000 :p
Thank you for the support : )
I talked about the wide gamut mode on the 3000 but it didnt make the cut as i had to rerecord that segment a couple times lol
I been waiting for this video, and it was well worth the wait! This is the most in depth video on psp screens on UA-cam, can’t wait to drop a new display in my psp, definitely getting the matte display. I’m excited to see what it looks like with the glass lens on it!
Glass lens is coming up next real soon : )
This is so well crafted. I appreciate your hard effort in making this video.
Seriously, Sir, please keep up the good work! Your videos are incredibly helpful and informative, and I don't think that anyone on UA-cam has EVER done this good a job covering PSP hardware upgrades [including that super exhaustive battery video]! Cheers!
Thank you, it really does mean a lot : )
Purchased the matte display from your link based off your video and comparisons. Thanks for the helpful info!! Looking forward to upgrading this and making it a powerhouse.
Glad it was helpful! Good luck with your install, if you are not planning on soldering it (or going to a phone repair shop for a quick job) then try to scratch the contacts with a screwdriver that you need to bridge followed by cleaning them for the best chance of the silver paint to work and keep working : )
@@TotalKommando great advice, thanks!! 🙏

Once again Thank You for appreciating the work that's put in : )
Just wanted to leave a comment because I just used this video as a guide to help me install my IPS screen today and it went perfectly! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful : )
Great video. Waiting for battery test!🔋
Hopefully it will be a whole lot more concise than this one lol
Man the effort you put to make this video, Please keep making these kind of videos! You got a new Subscriber!
I can't believe how much effort you put to make this video. It's mindblowing how detailed it is. Thank you so much!
Thank you for appreciating the work : )
Get ready for another one, later this week I will release my battery testing video thats been 3 months in the making lol
can i just say this is a perfect video, literally. you mentioned literally everything there is to know about IPS displays. this is also the only video i have found mentioning the E1000 IPS, which i didn’t even know about, i liked and subbed!
tyty : )
Finally, amazing video thanks!!!
Alright i'm buy one for my 1000. This was a really interesting video. I HATE ghosting so much, it makes me happy to know there's alternatives.
Post Notes:
- Matt IPS is not a fingerprint magnet (good for lensless faceplate build)
- Sorry for the lack of uploads, this video took way too long to make during a busy time for me.
Thank you so much for this video. I just pulled my PSP 1000 out of storage and was looking for help about IPS screens!
Great review!!
I didi not know about the matte IPS screen for PSP 1000.
Great video ! Super informative! I loved seeing all the comparisons !
(even if it was a bit fast ;))
Keep up the work! ❤
Thank you for the effort you put into this. It helps people to pick the right choice. Well done👍

Thanks : )
Im actually in the process in doing an indepth battery testing video, and one of the tests im doing is trying to compare IPS to the OG displays. Its a very hard test to do because every battery and console Im finding consumes different amounts of power ( still need to do more testing )
Long story short, as far as my current testing goes, they are either about the same or 30 mins better in terms of battery life over the OG
@@TotalKommando that's awesome to hear. looking forward towards the video on batteries, as this is probably the most important topic for all psp owners.
just came across you. great video and quality. definitely worth a sub. best of luck ✌️
Appreciate that! Glad you like the video : )
i did the conversion just this day..(matt display)
one thing to mention :
the matt display is a little to small for the steel frame of the psp to hold it
/doesn t sit tight like the old one.
it is secured a bit by the buttons holder/frame.
also i was fiddeling with the small cable of the ips display,
and broke the secure latch of the connector housing.
so be aware that these small latches are easy to break.(they re aged as well)
i secured the cable with a tiny drop of screw secure clue.
works like a charm
Nice, yea its fine, once the top and bottom padding is added its sits there safely.
Yea those latches are always a gamble, I got several damaged connectors on several consoles, I just put a piece of kapton tape to thicken them up and secure them with more to keep them in place lol
Excellent content, I have to watch it again with more concentration because it is full of information.
Thanks for your video! I don't think the video shows how tiny the two pins you need to bridge are, especially for my old eyes. I managed to do it, but a magnifying glass is definitely recommended.
21:04 I have the OLED with the etched screen, add a normal glossy glass screen protector, it makes a big difference.
Awesome video, thank you!
I donno why this video has so little likes . IT helped me a ton I'm happy i came across it
subscribed as my 3000 has a stuck pixel. Been planning a replacement for a decade now, but I'll keep waiting for an IPS instead of taking my risk with a bad aliexpress display.
I see you are a Generals fan lol
People in the past have tried to massage the pixel back into working order, its time consuming and usually eventually leaves a mark around the massaged area, also you could run one of those color flashing videos or apps to help it out
@@TotalKommando I've tried the the pixel flashing method but it hasn't helped.
@@michaelgriffith8472 If it was like $500-$1000 there would have been a good chance I got it but bruh 2-2.5K LOL

Very detailed and useful guide. Thank you!
That being said, the PSP has a glossy lens ontop so it kinda defeats the purpose of a matte on a psp unless you run without one : )
And for matte brightness testing, if we remove the matte coating we would measure a slightly higher number not the other way around.
If you like the 1000 screen, you will like the 2000, almost the same thing just reduced ghosting.
Thank you for this excellent video, good Sir! I have a PSP 2004, and I want to do the same upgrade. Which screen upgrade would you recommend for that? Perhaps you could make a video like this for the PSP 200X also? *crosses fingers*
The 1K & E1K are unfortunately the only 2 with this type of upgrade, if they ever do make them, I will make sure to have a video : )
Wait, so the 3000, the only model many PSP enthusiasts would even consider buying, doesn't have an IPS mod? Why/how? Could you make a video about why this might be? That's truly shocking news if it's true. There must be something about the internals that makes it more difficult and/or expensive.
Pretty clear explanations and comparations, thank you for sharing
Id rather u stay this way vs do what most big yters end up as with scripted as hell videos that sound boring af.
wtf, didn't even know that the psp street had a screen upgrade, might consider getting an ips screen for my e1000 soon 🤩
That's what I'm going to do for my white one (and maybe the black one too!!). I asked Total Kommando if putting a true glass panel on it may improve the quality of the colors and of the brightness too. Can't wait to read his answers!! Go E1000!! Go!!
thanx for the very good informations...
(although you could have cool down the pace a bit :)
i ll go with the matt one for my psp 1000.
any info how much it affects the battery life?
As far as my current testing goes, either runtime will be the same or you will get more run time. I have a battery testing video coming out later this week, I have been working on it for the past 3 months...
@@TotalKommando all right... thanx.
I've got a 2000 but this is making me want to pick up a 1000.
You can never have enough PSPs lol
My main psp is still the 2000, transparent with 6 sound reactive leds, which I have a tutorial on.
@@TotalKommando yea the issue was the foam padding. Took it off, left only the paper part it came sticked on. Issues gone.
Hehe, LG V60 gang!! Amazing phone even to this day, I love mine so much
Still rocking mine lol
No idea what phone I will get next. RIP LG Phones.
Omg wow. This is high quality content. Wow.
I love the videos you make about the PSP, it was one of my first consoles and I am very fond of it, I have a 3000 model that is more than 12 years old and the screen already has its faults, do you recommend a specific screen for a good quality replacement? Thanks in advance
Translated comment, my English is not the best
Aftermarket screens have good visual quality, if they work, most come defective and are easy to damage.
Best option in my opinion is a healthy good condition original 3000 screen
@TotalKommando thanks a lot for answering, I will try to find a decent second hand psp where I live, thanks for uploading content about psp 👍
The stages can be modified, using a very handy plugin called "Brightness 1.6".
www.mediafire.com/file/kf54xdf0x0609xe/Brightness_Control_v1.6.zip/file
This should allow you to manually adjust brightness to max and see whats going on, in my testing it works best with the slim models, as I found for some reason it slightly reduces the brightness on the 1000 models, but you may not even notice the difference, I only knew when I measured it with a tool.
Eyy Lets Goo glad to hear its working correctly xD
I'm still wondering why did the E-1000 get the IPS upgrade first instead of the PSP2k or 3k? :(
It does give us hope but it seems the wait might be really long...
By the way, thank you for the amazing in-depth video ! I learned so much about the IPS screens today thanks to you.
Where can I buy the psp housing you have on your psp 3000? The matte black one in 0:13
Got a video right here: ua-cam.com/video/X0YAdR2Qh6o/v-deo.html
: )
@@TotalKommando awesome, thank you sir.
Funny. I'm quite the opposite. I always prefer matt displays. Anyway, great video!
That gameplay of Liberty City Stories at the end looks butter smooth. Is your PSP overclocked or something?
Yep its overclocked/333mhz/running at the original max speed of the chip, GTA is one of the games that greatly benefit from it.
Sony decided it was a good idea to downclock the cpu to save battery lol
Im curious how different the two brightness versions of the adapted model are. I got the dimmer one since im sensitive to bright lights, and never take my PSP outdoors, so have no need for high brightness. If you were to make a follow up, I'd love to see how dim these screens go, as thats where I keep my brightness nearly all the time due to my sensitivity to brightness.
You can dim any screen model using a brightness plugin that lets you fine control each brightness level, so you can try that out and see how you like it.
wololo.net/talk/viewtopic.php?t=41319
If I do make a follow up or get measuring I'll let you know and add it to the pinned comment
Thanks a lot dude, you answered questions i didn't know i had - Do you also have a recommendation for PSP2000 aftermarket screens? as i got one laying around that is completely wreckt
Epic : )
Sad to tell you that all 6 aftermarket 2000 screens I have purchased over the past several years have sucked horribly.
No specific seller or link that I can share, they are all equally bad
@@PirateNightsuN So pick whatever that is within reach, within budget, and has a few reviews that at say at least it works : )
Just bought a bnib 1000, on the fence about swapping out for an IPS. It looks amazing. So you think it'll be worth it?
250% worth it
Hi, did you compare the electricity drawn by each of them ?
You can check the results in the video/spreadsheet here:
ua-cam.com/video/1aXUrMIQ_Ls/v-deo.html
They are about the same or better than OG screens
Very nice, your pacing is fine. Plus, youtube lets us slow it down if needed. To be clear, the Matt 1000 ips you listed from AliExpress is a good buy?If so I will be going with the mat display asap.
At this time, my pick goes to the matt for my project psp.
Yea I talk about those in the video, I doubt there is anything you can do about those
Seeing how the modded GameBoy scene is getting a lot of laminated screens options, it made me wonder.
Is there an option to remove that matt layer? Looks like it's just a matt screen protector. I like it glossy .
Which model? 1000 IPS?
I have mostly seen dead pixels on 2000/3000, all 5 of my IPS models luckily have no flaws
Do you have a working link where to purchase the Matt version? The link in description is broken.
Link works fine, i just tested it, if you are copying links instead of clicking them on youtube they break, UA-cam shortens them
The original PSP1000 display has 4 brightness levels with the button on the PSP.
@@TotalKommando Thank you for clearing ghat up for me. I appreciate it. Great video
In terms of power consumption, are those new screens significantly better or what?
In my battery testing video that was released later, I found no difference and if anything they are slightly more efficient.
You can find the video here: ua-cam.com/video/1aXUrMIQ_Ls/v-deo.html
There is a chapter for it, and you can checkout the test results yourself in the spreadsheet
@@TotalKommando thank you very much mate.
I'm just wondering how long do u think the silver conductive paint will last ?
If it makes good contact from the start, i think it will stay for a good while. Cant say for sure how long.
Now i can comfirm that my ips is the adapted one, i also notice the wired line issue, especially when booting a game when the psp logo come out😅
I've got the awkward version for my 1000 and I get horizontal lines across the white PSP logo screen only.
It can be tough, I ended up using a soldering iron to melt it, you should be able to soften it by heating up an old flat head screw driver with a lighter and going over it
So what screen in the description do you recommend guys?
Why is there no oled upgrade?
I have black light bleed in the bottom left corner, is that normal? Or is it cause I put pressure pressure the home and volume buttons?
If it has light bleed without any pressure then its most likely like that from factory
@@TotalKommando it’s after installing a new IPS that you name “awkward” in the video
@@coldmountain1997 Did you add any foam under the screen, you can open it, and let it sit around freely, and try and see where its coming from
@@TotalKommando not sure I had an guy from the flea market do it on front of me it took him 5 minutes and he did add a little rubber gasket around the screen maybe he pressed it down too tight in that one corner? I imagine I’d have to replace the lcd to fix it anyways so not too sure why I even asked in the first place heh it’s just very noticeable seeing a mostly dark screen then one park is much lighter
HI! if I put the piece of foam, when I close the shell, the display presses on the shell creating bright spots on the screen.. have you noticed this? (i have original shell)
My matt display after 1 month of use has a slightly dark pixel on the side.
I think the dark spot might be because of dead backlight led on that one side : |
Yea I would contact them anyways, worse case you get another one :|
Its most likely either a dead backlight led in that bottom corner or the solder contacts are weak, either way its hard to fix without damaging the display but you can try pressing the display corner between your fingers to see if it turns on the led while the faceplate is removed.
The only thing I can think of is the following: ua-cam.com/video/XVT2RHyB1Do/v-deo.htmlsi=7Gh14LHnM8OTCudF&t=527
There is a little plastic point that needs to feed through the subframe, if its not seated properly it can cause unevenness, or its possible that your subframe is warped?
I see, maybe they changed the type of foam they use and its thicker
All 3 ips variants will come with the paste right? I'm not confident with my soldering skill😅
Most of the listings now have an option for the paste bundle, so just double check that and you should be good to go
@@TotalKommando Thanks, just ordered the adapted varaint because of the cheaper price.
@@TotalKommando Do the needles mean I dont have to solder to get an IPS screen installed?
@@worstperson2ask Correct, it means you can use the paste to bridge the connection without having to solder
@@TotalKommando Nice, thanks
22:23 no you were great dont ever let someone get u down
I'm my worst critic : |
I want amoled for PSP 3000 😭 how come the GBC gots it ....
ikr :(
OLED or go home that's how I feel about these screen mods.
One thing that I could say beats the OLED is the brightness level on these IPS options, nonetheless an AM/OLED psp would be the real end game dream.
Gameboys are so old they deserve it more :)
Doesnt sound right, got some pics you can share on discord?
For 2000 and 3000 no ips mode so far?
nope nothing so far for those
YESSS
Adapted cable screen sucks, lots of lines on the screen when it is white.
Psp 3000k is goat!
My right trigger is not working might have to replace it I did check when I bought it is it just the ribbon cable I needa replace?
Nice, yea subframe can be very annoying.
The right trigger I would get a replacement rubber dome while you are at it, I would try shorting the contacts with an aluminum piece of foil, if it works then you may just need a rubber dome replacement, could also swap the rubber dome from the left side and see where the fault is
@@TotalKommando how do you short the contacts do you have a tutorial?

i ordered 5 from aliexpress, all were fine, but depends on your luck, have seen a few people mention having defective units that needed replacement, you can also find them on amazon
