Can see him trying but he definitely wasn't confident hence why he started going stronger and making bigger shot, but it just lessens his accuracy and ball kept going out.

Young responds by going for bigger and bigger shots as the match progresses. Roger is why we had the golden era of him, Rafa and Nole. He set the bar so high for so long, that to reach it you had to become a beast yourself. I remember Rafa trailing him as number 2 in the world for YEARS, becoming better and better every year. Same thing with Nole. And thanks to that we had the pleasure of enjoying for more than a decade perhaps the best 3 players of all time playing each other .
Young had a massive amount of talent and reminded me of Hingis; both left handed and a huge arsenal of shots except the one thing that was needed, depth and weight of shot; neither had it and it caused massive problems for them both, but no one on the planet can deny his immense level of talent.👏👏👏
Alcaraz fantastic player, but there is nobody currently on par w big 3, in fact don’t think we will see anyone in our lifetime who is same level as Djoko, Fed or Rafa

This reminds me of Pete Sampras 2002 US Open against another upcoming American player with a lot of power, Andy Roddick. Sampras beat Roddick and the score of that match is very similar to this match.
Donald Young was killing UCLA alumni journeymen at the Calabasas challenger in 2007 I think. They couldn't keep up during practice rallies he was too clean! I watched and listened. And Federer won easily here. So many levels.

If you actually look at Young’s technique in this video, it’s not as refined as the new young stars arising(Shelton, Sinner, Felix, Fils etc.). He looks too stiff when he hits his shots, hardly bends his knees, and is too close to the ball when he hits it. At a young age he became pro but didn’t take advantage of the time he had to make himself better which could’ve been done with realizing the weaknesses in his game, and fixing them. With that being said he’s stayed at the same level for the last 15 years with little to no improvement so it’s obvious that the above is correct.
Actually his groundie technique was just as good. It was his serve, tactics, fitness and mental game that kept him from getting better. He had enough talent, but stuck with his parents as coaches and never grew up as a result. His serve was never fast enough, and he didn't try to change anything after. His forehand and backhand is actually better than Shelton's but Shelton's serve was miles faster and heavier, plus he's willing to come to the net more than Young. Young also didn't add anything like drop shots or slices. And if he got more time in the weight room, he'd be able to crack shots like Shelton more. But he also didn't play smart, just trying to hit it hard to Fed's forehand and not spin it heavy to the backhand like Shelton does until he gets an attackable ball.
Too bad. I’ve seen him in Omaha in 2005 at NE high school state championship. I was an exchange student from Thailand at LHS in junior high competed in class B double. I believed he was in sophomore year and already turned Pro. Years later I saw him on TV he did not grow up an inch nor his physique improve. 😢 I hope he is doing well in his life.

God knows to what extent his health got damaged by the repetition of a certain medical procedure in 2021 and 2022. However, in this match he seemed be lacking self confidence, being his own opponent. And he actually wasn't even giving his best. Young just didn't run enough in this match. That's what happens if you're hyped up to the sky and then have a reality check with half of USA sitting in front of the TV watching your failure.
He was hyped, similar to Eugenie Bouchard. In the tennis mecca of Atlanta, he was well known and one of the biggest hopes ever. To this day, Chris Eubanks mentions him as being instrumental to his own development. At the time of Young, I don’t think we had many American men in the top 50, but I may be wrong.
