  • Up next. An interview with my dear friend, the man of 1000 voices, Jess Harnell who is always a blast, a Voice actor who's also a rockstar. So music so he got sued by a legendary rock singer for sounding too much like him and today he shares a story of how his neighbor William Shatner, Captain Kirk himself has mistaken him for years for Gene Simmons of Kiss. That’s how great of a voice actor he is! It’s one of the funniest rock stories I’ve ever heard plus he breaks down his band rock Sugar’s latest rock masher that’s equal parts Queen and Linkin Park. You won’t wanna miss this one. Next on Professor of Rock.

I have absolutely no idea who this guy is--never heard of him before--but he is funny as hell! And his William Shatner impersonation is absolutely spot on. I mean what's so great about it is he doesn't over-exaggerate Shatner's mannerisms, unlike most people who try to imitate him.

I only knew of him because of the Animaniacs originally. And then he and Chuck I believe appeared on The Mark and Brian Radio Show...then I met him personally when he was making an appearance at a Barns and Noble in a little town east of Sacramento California. Ive been a Sugar Head ever since they released their first album. Look for the single
Dont Stop The Sandman. It will blow you away. You will have to seek out everything they have done.

I have been a musician for over 50 years, and Jess gave the greatest quote i have heard in my life! I had to stop it and replay it three times to drill it into my head. "The Beatles taught me how to write a song, Steve Perry taught me how to sing a song, and KISS taught me how to perform a song!" Just Priceless. This was a great interview, but that one quote made the whole video worth the time. Thanks for all your great content and personal interviews Adam!

OMG ADAM ! I think you unlocked a door to my rage. When I was a little kid, I was taping off the radio. And yes, I went insane when the DJ talked over the song. They wouldn't shut up. Grrrr. You waited and waited anxiously. Then, finally, you had it. Then the idiots ruined it and you had to start all over again. So, my anger stems from school and DJs. Oh, the other day, you mentioned the pencil trick for cassettes. Well, I ruined so many tapes, I could use my pinky and spin them back fast.

I was one of the thousand people who watched the new song the day it premiered; I was sobbing the entire time. Harnell and Co. really made a touching tribute to some amazing people who left us far too early. Having worked the Pop Culture convention circuit for many years, I have heard some doozies of Shatner stories. He does have a tendency to expect "broads" to fawn over him and get a little handsy with female cosplayers.

    (1) I love that his Shatner impression is a _Shatner_ impressions, rather than a _Kirk_ impression. (2) I love that he can't _quote_ Shatner _without_ the impression. I had a teacher, many years ago, whom I can't quote without naturally falling into _his_ voice...not even on purpose...just because _his_ words don't sound right _to me_ without _his_ voice. Similarly, I can't tell a Norm MacDonald joke without doing _his_ voice because his voice was _part of_ what made his jokes so funny...and he is undeniably _worthy_ of tribute via impression. Side Note: The "Rock on!" gesture Jess Uses is actually "I love you," in American Sign Language. The _actual,_ "Rock on!" doesn't traditionally use the thumb. Then again, I'm not Jess Harnell, so...

I so love this guy! You gotta get your ass out of bed every day because there might be a parade and Jess Harnell gets that.

Ha, he’s hysterical! Prof, you gotta get him and Michael Winslow together on the same interview. That would be priceless.

Rock Sugar is amazing at mixing great songs together that we couldn’t have imagined together. And it’s always fun to hear him impersonate anyone.

I first heard of Jess because I grew up in a Christian home, and there was I Christian audio drama my family would listen to called Adventures in Odyssey. On the show, Jess played a gregarious and zany mailman named Wooton Bassett. It's fun to see him pop up here.

Am not familiar with Jess Arnell....... but everybody knows the Animaniacs and Crash Bandicoot.
How cool is it to be Captain Kirk's neighbor?? Wonder if he beamed anybody up? 😂😂
Thanks for this Professor. Shedding light on unknown artists is a great thing, and you do it well.

I’ve seen him speak and met him at a Comic-Con, he didn’t make my son and I feel like numbers and shows genuine interest. Jess is an outstanding gentleman and a phenomenal talent.

I was unaware of this man...what an incredible talent and an absolute winner of a guy. I just love the idea of mashing songs together. There's this one guy who dresses up like a clown and one his songs has The Who's "Pinball Wizard" lyrics sung to Johnny Cash's song "Folsom Prison Blues" and it is a blast. I remember the group "Dread Zeppelin" had an Elvis Presley style singer that sang Zeppelin songs but in reggae LOL. I am now a new fan of this group and I will be happy to check out Harnellevision. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada. 🍁

Wow! I just learned something, @professor of Rock I will find my people that show me:
How a song should be written
How a son should be sung
& Then how to perform a song!!!
He's amazing & seems very humble & outgoing. I think that's someone I could sit & learn things from & talk to for hours!!

Im still a little bent that he was sued for sounding too much like ***** . You would think he would have been flattered , but it seems that Jess was better and he didnt like it. And the fact that it was a mashup😂😂. Always great to hear from him.

Ohmygosh! The Beatles taught him how to write a song, but Steve Perry taught him how to sing! I love that! Thank you, Wakko Warner, uh, I mean Mr. Harnell, for being absolutely awesome! (At least you live in a house that looks like a spaceship & not a water tower. 😃)
