Classic Rock Band Got Their UNUSUAL NAME From a Game of Scrabble? | Professor of Rock
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 січ 2024
- It starts out with a drum beat that is so abrupt, you feel as though your head might explode, and then one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in classic rock history, not to mention the singalong chorus that everybody knows by heart. I’m talking about the classic rock standard Slow Ride by Foghat. Speaking of that famous guitar riff…it changes speed and climaxes near the end, apparently, the band did this on purpose to mimic the act of S-E-X… they don’t call it Sex Drugs and Rock and Roll for nothing! The song came from a basement jam session where the power went off and they nearly lost the recording. But they pulled it off… they were used to off-the-wall happenings since they got their band name Foghat from a game of Scrabble. Up next, the story behind this all-time classic from one of the only remaining members of the band, drummer Roger Earl. It’s the tale of a 70s rock classic!

It’s time for another edition of our series Revelations where featured artists take us for a deep dive into their greatest songs and albums. Insight you won’t find anywhere else. This 70s classic starts with a drum beat that ruptures your skull, a guitar riff that has become part of our collective psyche, and a chorus that we all sing when it comes on classic Rock Radio… It grinds us up for 8 minutes, overflowing with Sex no Drugs all rock n roll. I’m talking about Slow Ride by Foghat. The British band had relocated to the US East Coast and their long-time bassist Tony Stevens was burnt out and ended up quitting the band… Up to that point they’d had success with a gold album, but not that one song that would put them on the map… That’s where our story begins… Founding member and Drummer Roger Earl tells us the story of how Slow Ride came to the band along with current guitarist Brian Bassett who was the original guitarist of Wild Cherry and has also been in Molley Hatchet and Foghat… as we go into this interview I do want to thank our sponsor Zenni eyewear the glasses that I wear all the time. Poll: What is your pick for the GREATEST CRUISING song of all time?
Tush ZZ
I'll nominate "Radar Love" by Golden Earring.
Take It Easy, The Eagles.
Radar Love --Golden Earring
I Can't Drive 55 -- Sammy Hagar
Hollywood Nights -- Bob Seger
Foghat has never received the praise that they deserve. One of the greatest straight forward rock bands in history. Lonesome Dave's passing was a huge loss to rock & Roll. Foghat to this day is still one of my "go to" bands to crank up when I'm driving. So many great songs/albums.
Agreed!
Just pure rock and roll.
Very true
This is a song that absolutely _must_ be played at full blast.
Turned up to 11
It was named after you
At 11!
Foghat's 'Slow Ride' perfectly illustrates why rock music flourished during the 70s.
Good call.
Take it easy!
Oh, come on baby!
That’s why most of us still listen to 70s music 🤘
Yeah, most modern rock lacks that primal sexual element that was integral to and synonymous with most 60's and 70's rock.
That is as classic as classic rock and roll can get
Amen!
Got that right!
Just rocking into the night!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Probably could not count the number of times we heard this on the rasdio :)
They were one of the hardest working bands ever. They toured non-stop for years. I got to see them 3 times. These guys ROCKED!!!
Thanks Professor!!!
You rock too!!
😎👍
Thanks for sharing!
Yes! Great live band, one of the best.
For sure. @@ponzo1967
Agreed...Professor delivers day after day!
@kwilliams1958
Yes he does! 👍
The moment those drums start you know this song and you can't help but turn it up.
So true!
And the guitar riff chugs.
Just thought of how spoiled we were in the seventies. You could buy a fresh pressed vinyl off the shelf, and within an hour, hear that drum beat and bass, your heart starts racing and that guitar starts crunchin' and the singer starts breathing out fire! All in top of the line high tech JBL speakers with massive cones! Incredible song for sure! Incredible era!❤🙏🕊
Amen! You took the words right out of my mouth Rabby!
rabby awesome i have 1980 recoditioned jbl 3 ways a friend gave 30 x 14 oak box those high end sound great friend dj had but sold mine friend had reconditioned around 20 years ago sat in his band truck they never used so he gave to me still sound ok but yeh high end cones realy clear rock on we did same 70s friends older bros had klipsch cornwalls another his dad killer system was hippie in 60s a dj gave a big price for those jbls like 6 7 hundred dollars late 70s same reconditioned like late 80s
What a feeling!
I remember seeing Dazed And Confused. At the very end I'm just sitting there thinking about how great I thought it was, and here comes Slow Ride, blasting through the theatre as the credits started rolling. The perfect song for that, or for any other time.
Just a great soundtrack overall.
Saw that movie in theater as soon as it came out. We got so stoned before going in there. It felt like we were in the movie! Felt like we were right there hanging out with all those characters in the movie! The soundtrack nailed it! It felt so real and took me back to that year even though I was like 4-5 years old. Music has always been a big part of my life: if not the biggest part!
That killer drum beat in the beginning, is the sound of the headboard hitting the wall. Great song!
That's right! Good observation.
I hope the wall was unharmed.
An American mate introduced me to this band back in the 80’s. It was only a couple of years ago I realised they were a British Band
They sound so American it really surprised me they are actually British.
Listening to the song you would have no idea they were British.
I remember as a 12-year-old that my older sisters would play this song and Fool for the City before school. Didn't realize at the time what it was all about 😬... but I learned. I always dug the "Foghat" font on the album cover...
So cool. Thanks Flave!
That font screams 70s.
I was a Savoy Brown fanboy. Kim Simmonds such an underrated slide player. I was so glad to see Lonesome Dave achieve success with Foghat. RIP Dave Peverett.
RIP Lonesome Dave!
Big thumbs up for Kim,tell Mama. Another RIP
Too young, Dave.
I’m 60 years old and find your videos fantastic it’s great that you meet and interview artists. I have always been a music freak. Had uncles that played guitar and get together and play and sing and they let me mess with their guitars. I got my first guitar at a young age. I was in a band in late 80s to the mid 90s. Never got any where big time I just love playing. A drummer and I still jam a little now and then. Thanks for your videos, you the best.
Rock on! Thanks for watching. What would you like to see next?
@@ProfessorofRock I like it all my friend
Rod Price is buried in Wilton New Hampshire.
I didn't realize this until about 4 years ago and went to visit his grave as I live in N.H.
Played " Slowride" loudly beside his grave and left one of my guitar picks on his headstone as a token of my appreciation of his guitar skills .
nice gesture 😊 , I'm from Ma. saw them at the Boston Garden with Triumph..
Saw them 5 times as a warm up band in the 1980s. All at the Spectrum in Philly. 35-45 minutes of perfection each time.
I still crank it up when ever I hear it. Loved Foghat!
Great song and band!
I remember seeing Foghat, as an opening band, for Boston, in Little Rock. They almost blew Boston out of the water. Saw Wild Cherry, opening for The Commodores, and saw Savoy Brown, opening for ZZ Top. GREAT TIMES!
Really? What year was this?
I saw them, as a 12 year old, opening for Boston's 1978 "Don't Look Back" Tour - at then-Capital Centre, in Landover, MD. This was my MY FIRST ARENA ROCK CONCERT!! I talked my Dad into letting me go if we brought my best gal pal, Donna, and he agreed to chaperone. Dad was already in his late-40s, very corporate, couldn't have looked more like "the man" if he tried...and we girls looked like the grade schoolers we were. LOL - the looks we got!! 😅 Dad didn't blink an eye, though we feared he would send us running for the exits once inside, as every single person was doing bong hits in their seats and the smoke was so thick, you could hardly see anything. My sweet Dad held his silence (and for years afterward, the ONLY rock music I was allowed to pay at home was Boston: he said they were so melodic!)
I'll NEVER forget this concert, and Foghat, which was on its way out, was still a massive band...they closed with SLOW RIDE, and I was delirious with joy. Show and tell was never so amazing! LOL!! Thank you, Dad!!! He is still my best friend...at 94 😀 Still LOVE these bands and play them constantly
Thanks for sharing!@@missysmith378
With Boston, was in 1976 (Little rock) Wild Cherry around 1977, (Little Rock), and Savoy Brown was in 1975 (Denver)@@ProfessorofRock
@@missysmith378 Great story!
I had a complete daily work out cranking weights back in High School in the 80's centered about the whole "Foghat Live" LP - nothing like it!!
My favorite use of this song on TV was in an episode of Spin City. Mayor Winston was driving Charlie and his date around in a limousine. After playing it over and over, Charlie asked him to play ANYTHING else but Slow Ride. But, of course, that hard-driving intro came blasting over the speakers again!
Blast for the past!
❤🎉
FOGHAT!!
Always wondered why the song sped up so much........ Now we know thanks to the Professor!
Thanks Professor!
Happy Hump Day!
I like it at the original tempo.
I was a BIG fan before Fool for the City came out. Anyone with a basic musical brain knew Foghat were on their way , one way or the other. I got this LP Christmas of 75' from my very religious sister, it was evidently approved by higher powers. Of course Slow Ride was fantastic but I was drawn to Terraplane Blues. The whole album was really great so it was solid all the way through. I recall feeling really happy because I knew Foghat were going to get the accolade they truly deserved. It was almost like a friend made it BIG. Even today, that album takes me straight back to Winter 75 and the joy of that Christmas vacation . I was 15 and it was all good in every way, such is youth, even in rough times. The SACD version is another outstanding release that I treasure. RIP to Lonesome Dave and all the guys not with us here. Long live Roger ,Brian and the band. As long as me and my kids are around Foghat will be played regularly.
Thanks for sharing!
I love SR, and Fool For the City, but I have to say that in my opinion, Terraplane Blues is, hands down, the best song on the album. Adam, you have to check that song out. A great cover of a masterful song. That song truly shows who and what Foghat is about.
They deserved more hits.
Let's take a SlowRide with #POR. Have a happy Hump day everyone, from Tampa Florida..
You too Michael! Rock on 🤘
Great song. I loved hearing it in the 1993 movie Dazed and Confused which is one of my favorite movies.
Thanks Wayne!
I was Bryan's tour bus driver when he was in Molly hatchet. Many long conversations with him, such a knowledgeable and cool person.
Ahhh, Slow Ride. What a fantastic song! "Lonesome" Dave's and Rod "The Bottle" call and response is THE greatest opening to a rock song ever! Thanks Professor!
Thanks for watching!
Loved seeing Foghat in St. Louis as a kid. They came through the St. Louis area it seemed 3-5 times a year. And they ALWAYS put on a good show.
I'm 65 now, was a teen during the 70's, Loved this band. I have 1 LP Foghat live. Recorded during stadium performance. when feeling a little Blue. I just throw that album on for a pick me up.
Slow Ride came out my freshman year. Most did think it was a cruising song as we thought they wouldn't play it if it meant something else. The album cover is something everyone who likes to fish and can't love. I am glad almost 50 years later it is still appreciated. I imagine it still will be 50 year down the road.
Right? So funny!
I just watched Elizabeth Zharoff reacting to Supertramp: Take the long way home.
I was never diggin' the meaning of it. (Well: that's, why I'm here.)
Like "every breath you take" from the Police describes a stalker (and some play that song on weddings)....so much to learn.
And I'm only german. Try to catch the meaning of lyrics in another language.
What do you guys think of First we take Manhattan by Leonard Cohen? I think I get that one right. And read so much *bull..frog* about it.
The cover art is great!
The cover is supposed to be the "Fool for the City", right? I remember buying that record at a used record store when I as 16 or 17
Here in my 60th year of this life, I got very interested in Savoy Brown and listened to them for countless hours, mostly on Spotify. I was never a huge Foghat fan but always enjoyed what I heard on the radio. after this, I'm inclined to look deeper into Foghat's catalog. The continuity of that particular bluesy Savoy Brown sound can easily be heard in a lot of Foghat's output. Savoy, Like Foghat, were apparently touring monsters for many years in their heydays. Foghat obviously had refined that sound into something more palatable to the mass market. More power to 'em.
Great song that became a burnout due to overexposure on radio. Their predecessor, Savoy Brown, was excellent.
One day I was lying in bed playing Slow Ride on my mental stereo. I got up to the break then turned on the radio to see what was playing.
There was silence.
Then the song picked up from the break - it quite startled me!
Imagine being in the studio with these guys when they laid it down on tape. Thanks Professor 👓, great one as always 🎸
Rock on!
Awesome interview Professor! Saw them in OKC in ‘78!! So good!🤘🔥

This is one of my all time favorites songs. It was awesome growing up in the 70's!!

Finally! Some REAL Rock n Roll
You don't like the last few?
gonna see Foghat in a couple of weeks. Totally stoked

Alright, alright, alright.... first thought and perfectly placed and totally apropos. The ending to the cinematic classic Dazed And Confused........ those of us who lived it at that time and that age...... just smiled.
Ha ha! Awesome.
"Fool For The City", baby. Always loved that one.
My friends and I, driving around, would hear the intro and all yell "windows!", we'd roll down the windows and crank up the volume. Ahhh, great memories!
For sure!
Did you have a convertible?
Vinyl schminyl, 8-track quadraphonics in the car, cruising to the jams...ahh the memories ❤😊!
Indeed!
😊
I heard the long version of this song on the radio when I was 14. Life changing. I thought it was the most perfect song I'd ever heard and couldn't wait to play it for my grandparents! They, alas, were not as thrilled as I'd hoped. But for me--it was the 70's magnum opus.
I was at a free concert done outdoors in Tongduchŏn Korea. That was the summer of 1988. It was really appreciated seeing someone from the states. Thank you Foghat.
One of my all-time favorites that never got the recognition that many other bands did , but if you want hard driving Rock & Roll they're it 👍✌️👍
The Outlaws - Green Grass and High Tides...
The magnum opus of Florida' Guitar Army!
Hey ProRo 🤓this weekend I told this dude after eating a half a tin of Altoids . His breath is as fresh as a Foghat concert 😅
Ha ha! Where'd you get that ?
@@ProfessorofRock I've seen enough of them. So I can see 👀
I see what you did there! 😝
One of my favorites
Mr. Professor! Thanks for covering this song! I remember listening to this album with a friend, when were growing up in the 70's!
First time I played slow ride for some buddies on a stereo everyone was loving that song except one guy. He said, ahh it’s alright but it isn’t special. I looked at him like he was nuts and said this song is one of the greats and I bet you 40 years from now it will still be one of the great songs of this time. I remember he said “ okay then $100, you can pay me then. I wish he was still with us so I could tease him about it all. Great song and group then and now. 😎🍺☮️
slow ride, live now pay later...classic 70s. straight up rock n roll the way it's meant to be played.
F- yeah! Foghat! They get lost in the shuffle that was the guitar rock world of the 70s, and that's a shame. They really rocked and had some really great tunes, including the one featured today. The bass work by Nick Jameson was outstanding. If you listen, you'll hear some slap bass on the album. Great vid PoR!
Thanks Greg!
Nick killed it on Slow Ride.
I saw these guys in concert at Granny's Rocker in Edwardsville, Illinois back in the early 90s. They rocked the roof off the place!
If you ever steamed up the windows of a ' 56 Crown Victoria, you're gonna dig this channel. Extra points if you were alone.
One of my favorite bands!! They were incredible live!! Really miss Lonesome Dave.
I was fortunate to meet them on their '78 tour. Got backstage passes from a radio station and met the band. Very nice guys who took time to talk to a 14-year old kid. I've met them many times over the years and have probably seen them live over 20 times. Such a great band and they never got the recognition they deserve. They were road warriors, loved playing live, had great albums and songs, and always had time for the fans. They belong in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Roger has always been a true gentleman and an ambassador of rock. His wife is a sweetheart. All the members of the band (past and present) are great people. No other band like them. Thanks for sharing this great video for a great song and awesome band!!!
I'm so happy you mentioned Guitar Hero III and GTA: San Andreas. Growing up in the late 90s/early 00s, both of those games were my first exposures to Slow Ride and they both remain among my favorite games of all time. So maybe they aren't as big as the movies or shows, but they had a huge influence on my musical exposure. Not to mention that Slow Ride is the VERY FIRST song in Guitar Hero III! For more casual players, Guitar Hero III is associated with Slow Ride even more than Through the Fire and Flames
THanks!
I hope to one day get ahold of these video games.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I hope you do too! They're amazing
Such a great classic song! Thanks so much for all the content you create!
I remember having this on tape in the car and cranking it full volume.
8 track?
Cool!
What type of car did you have?
Great interview!
Slow Ride is one of my dad's favorite songs. he even had a car with the words "Slow Ride" painted on it back in the 70s
What kind of car?
What color was the car?
Mia Morris does an AWESOME drum cover of this song from a few years ago!!🤘
One of my most favorite live concert bands I have seen many times. I was a big Savoy Brown fan before Foghat was formed. Just like 38 Special, they always put on a great live show.
Rock on!
When was the last time you saw them?
Yup! Think we fans sort of always knew about what this song was about. Slow Ride still is a great song.
Cool interview! Badass song! Badass band!
Adam, one of the greatest shows if not the best show, I ever saw, had Foghat and The Outlaws. Two of the greatest rock tunes ever on one stage in one night. Slow Ride and Green Grass and High Tides. Oh and they got blown off the stage by the opening act....The Johnny Van Zant band. Oh to hear Lonesone Dave belt this one out more time.
He isn't wrong about Vermont! On beautiful, sunny days, we'll lose power. I had no idea they recorded Slowride in Sharon, VT. I live about 15 minutes from there in White River Junction. Very cool.
One of my favorite bands, and one of my top ten favorite songs…thanks for the video!
One of my all time favorites. As soon as you started the intro I knew who and what song you were referring to. I still listen to these guys. Greatness.
This song is awesome. What is crazy for me is how the only place I caught it through the whole time I was learning music and loading up on classic rock airtime rotation was its usage in Nighthawks, all 15 seconds of it.
Agreed! Thanks Eric!
Wow! Is that how you discovered the song?
My best memory of the song is my buddy Harley and myself at the local festivals, riding the rides and singing that song at the top of our lungs. And then having other riders join in. It was a yearly ritual for us.
Oh and we knew what the song was about back then. That was about the early to mid 80's.
Thanks for sharing Erik!
What was your favorite ride to sing it on? The carousel?
I played the Live album to death...absolutely one of my faves from beginning to end. Still get to roll it out and enjoy the JBL's in my front room.
Absolutely love "Foghat!
Love these videos. Brian was a customer of mine at a music store in Daytona Beach. Great player, great guy!
DUDE..... Damn you took me way back. Not only with your T-Shirt ( I've loved Def Leppard since the High and Dry album) but your description of this song is that exactly. My first "French Kiss" was to this song lol. And I most definitely agree people need to start sharing music today. REMOVE THE EARBUDS
An excellent interview, Adam! Hogfat…uh…Foghat made one of the most indelible rock tunes EVER!
I opened for Foghat in Great Falls, Montana in September of 1991 (my rock and roll dream) and Dave and the lads were very cool. Their music still blows away decades on!
I remember being a little kid walking around my neighborhood listening to this on a cassette recorder.
So cool. Love your screen name!
Wow.
This song is also a must for any serious road trip!
Amen!
It’s a great one for driving!
I was introduced to this song when my dad took me to see Lonesome Dave's Foghat at a club in Golden, Colorado called The Buffalo Rose in 1990. I was 15. It was my 3rd ever live show. Their bus broke down which made them late, but the made it up to us by having an extended meet and great. The best bit was they let 15 year old me nerd out about their guitars and amps as I was only into my 3rd year playing guitar and they were quite gracious with all my probing questions. I was deeply saddened by Dave's passing.
Probably the best cassettes I used to have was Fool for the City and Stone Blue. Great Foghat music. Love Slow Ride. But on the jukebox in the bars I fired up Wild Cherry ( from the Energizer album ) many times. The movie Rock Star ( with Mark Walberg and Jennifer Anniston) played a Foghat song longer than any other song from the movie soundtrack. My favorite drinking song being the Chateau Lafayette 59 Boogie. Love it!!!! Great music never dies. And Foghat goes great with Johnny Winter. Listen to any of their cds back to back and you'll see what I mean. 🎸 🎸
Thanks Professor👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Foghat was a staple on the air. Slow Ride with the driving guitars, the thumping bass, the opening beats. It could have been about garbage and and we would have sung along to it. Thanks Adam!
Well said!
We don’t care what the song means. All we care about is that it rocks!
As a 14 year old at boarding school in the mid 70s, to military school to finish the decade... I always hung out with the older kids. Got turned on to great music, Zappa, Goose Creek Symphony Orchestra, Al DiMeola and tons of rock! Foghat was the fool in the city, thank you for the great music, guys!
The city of Utica, NY, "Val Bialis" Parkway Ski Hill, in the 1970's, played over a loud speaker system was the local "ROCK AND ROLL" radio Station's (WOUR - the Rock of Central New York) broadcasts.
I loved it when "SLOW RIDE" was played, and I was on the slope, ready to rock some awesome skiing to it!
Then there was Carol King's "I Feel The Earth Move Under My Feet" song too!
And anything Queen...
Thanks for sharing!
Good morning,, professor! Some of your interviews , actually are on albums I own! My wife is country😔 but, it’s so funny when we listen to classic rock, I always,” we own that” Blows her mind!!!
I saw them at the Duluth arena when I was 14. It was my first concert. My ears were still ringing the next day.
Thanks, Adam 👍
Thanks for watching!
"Communal Listening!" Oh how I miss those days!
Your intro reminded me of going to all the record stores in town to find the cd single for my hero because I learned that foo fighters had done a cover of Baker Street. These days it takes a 2 second search of Amazon music.
So sad. It takes away the adventure!
Yeah I need to go to record stores more often!

This is my favorite show on Professor of Rock !
Slow ride always was and always has been one of my favorite songs. I got to see Foghat in Florida actually at a dance club in Panama City beach n 94 or 95 and they were still great.
On Rock nite at the roller rink we all skied to Slow ride! What a timeless kickin song!
I was so glad when Guitar Hero 3 came out and my friends got to experience songs like this. Most of them did not listen to classic rock at that time, but they played the game and developed a taste for themselves.
Foghat, such a class act, thank you
Saw Foghat back in the early 80s. Bangin live show!! Honey Hush ....omg.
I was 4-5 years old when this song came out and when it was very popular. I remember it more from 76. It amazing that at such a young age the music grabbed me. It was doing this to me at the age of 2! That’s how good the music was back then. This song though always rocked! Always had such great energy! And I loved its part of the soundtrack in the movie Dazed and Confused. When you hear this song you can really feel the 70s. And that movie did a great job of portraying being young in 76. This song is pure 70s! And at the time this song came out, “arena Rock” was really starting to take off. If I had to pick a decade or a 10-year run of music as my favorite, 75-85 was incredible!
Man I love this right here!! One of my top 5 gameday songs for sure; I don't care what event I'm talkin' about. One of them handful of songs ingeniously full of salt, grease, and groove all at the same damn time man!!
My very first concert was Foghat at the LA forum. Eddie money opened up this was prolly 76 or 77, Eddie was great, his band was tight and amazing. Foghat Holy MowLEEEEE!! THEY WENT OFF! Played like it was their last day on earth, those two guitarists put on a show not many can rival, (and growing up in LA County I've seen em all.) Till this day lol that slide guitar, not many have even come close. Criminally underrated band. Foghat rules/kicks ass/ *TOP TIER!!* Peace
Saw Foghat and BOC in the early 70s. We were so fortunate to spend 8 dollars and have our faces rocked off..
