    As I’ve said before, every now and again I do an interview with an artist where it takes me completely off guard and exceeds my expectations. Well this is definitely one of those times...Coming up a legendary voice actor, who’s also a rockstar, He’s done something incredibly unique in rock and roll where he combines some of the biggest rock songs ever in a fresh and exciting way and he’s so great at it, that one of rock’s all time greatest frontmen actually sued him for sounding too much like him. Coming up the voice of Wako Warner from Animaniacs, Crash Bandicoot and Roger Rabbit on Professor of Rock I’ve done a lot of interviews over the last decade. and on the rare occasion I get sideswiped by an interview where I’m blown alway by their charisma, talent and character as a human being. This interview was an absolute blast! , His name is Jess Harnell, a man who Variety has ranked as one of the top 10 voice actors on the planet. He’s the voice of Wakko Warner from the Animaniacs, Crash Bandicoot and so many others.
    He started out as a singer doing jingles, then became a voice actor and he was so amazing at mimicking voices, he started a band called Rock Sugar back in the day where he does something so fresh that you’ll hear your favorite rock songs in a whole new way… check this out: Coming up, Jess tells us some hilarious stories about being so great at mimicking Ozzie that he fooled his daughter Kelly, How he did a Christopher Walken impression to Christoper Walken as well as reimagining rock greatest songs… Again this guy is so good he got sued for sounding exactly like one rock’s greatest singers… a hilarious interview is up next.

  • @ronroyster

    It was Steve Perry who sued him. When Perry found out it wasn't him actually singing, he should have immediately asked the judge to drop it!

    • @dhunter1133
      @dhunter1133 2 роки тому +27

      My understanding is that it was Steve Perry's label who sued, because they thought the imitation of Steve would harm his brand. In all things, follow the money. I mean, Coolio publicly threatened to beat up Weird Al Yankovic for "Amish Paradise," in spite of Coolio's label giving Weird Al permission to proceed, because the label knew the parody would drum up more interest in the original.

    • @jedironin380
      @jedironin380 2 роки тому +15

      @@dhunter1133 I don't listen to Coolio (Who?!), but I like Weird Al and loved Amish Paradise! Especially the part near the end, where Al had to sing the lyrics BACKWARDS because the scene was played in reverse but his vocals match the lyrics, played forward!

    • @kernelpickle
      @kernelpickle 2 роки тому +26

      The guy has a bit of an ego, and has even sued his former band-so there’s no way he would’ve backed down from that one. Even though there’s no way to copyright or trademark the timbre and/or vocal inflection of a person’s voice, I bet he pressed the issue because he felt like they owed him money. I know the concept of likeness rights are a thing, so maybe he and his lawyers thought they could get a win with that, but it’s still shitty the way they ruled on that one. They absolutely should’ve appealed because a ruling like that one, which is apparently sealed, would clearly pose a massive issue for fair use, parody, satire and the first amendment.

      All are astounding stars, but no one ever includes the women of the English Folk Rock Period for lead vocals and the men for the radical lead guitar and other string and percussive instruments, which came behind the British Invasion about 8 years in my distracted life of getting my education, my 3rd class Radio Broadcast Licenses in 64 at age 16, high school graduation living away from home at age 18 until graduation and marriage at age 20+ {now 52 years and growing older together someday}, going to the University that was beyond my family class, getting my first stereo with AR speakers thanks to a friend from a wealthier family who had learned about personal audio gear early in life and took my money and purchased a Scott 357 (? I thought that I would always remember those numbers because this was the same Integrated Amplifier that John Lennon used with his Tannoy Speakers in his home/apartment in New York when he was murdered, and around 1968 or 1969 when I got married and it was literally a hell of a lot of a shock to me to instantly be won over to make time and room for a style, that if discussed first, I would have probably been reluctant to consider. But once hearing Sandy Denny’s Power, Purity, Range, Instant movement , color, and Emotion that reaches today heights and lows of the rawness that only experience can convey in which I was struck by a a work of poetry and more frighteningly prophetically in such a beautifully written and performed manner that can only be explained/communicated to another as an understatement, But when one hears Sandy Denny perform “WHO KNOWS WHERE THE TIME GOES” at age 20, I could see myself at age 75+/-!
      What I am trying to say is that a lot of people are running their mouths about how everything is tied to frequencies and they “think that ALIENS” helped us build the pyramids by showing us how to use frequencies to levitate the large blocks, and now the evil elite (this part is right) is a group of blue blooded descendants of ancient lizard people who are trying to prevent the human race from reaching our highest vibration level of power and peace by keeping us enslaved and using us as cattle and only one of the types of people on the planet to be prevented from verifying each other’s existence, thus the greatest struggle and planetary act of mass murder and indiscriminate harvesting of weak minds and souls over the death ☠️ Non vaccine which is unnecessarily becoming the unconscious membership digital signal of submission to the guy on the street and the cops watching from the eyes on the buildings and in the toilets, and the now being introduced digital solar powered nuclear seeking fragment power chips to stockpile for power replacement so that eventually all insects, then digital printing replacements for all phylums will be completed until the earth becomes a solar powered digital planet that is totally carbon free from their own footprint thus becoming the first totally successful MARXIST WORLD with air so pure that the oxygen levels and methane levels soon reach such levels that even after the digital collective realized the danger and de vegetated the terrestrial and aquatic plants in an all out attempt to stabilize their atmosphere and stop extreme weather to minimize their fate from ignition from fires and localized fires were a thing of the past since there were no more organic pest growing and then dying and drying out and becoming tender for a fire. This interview really hit home for me.
    In my late teen years, I used to do impersonations for friends phone messages. I used to get calls all day from random people wanting to hear the day’s message.
    At 58 I started singing. When Jess said I broke the code, that’s exactly what I said once I nailed a song.
    His Artful Dodger story about not being right for the part inspired me.
    I don’t look the part of the songs I sing but the best compliment I’ve ever got was from a young man that said I was a freak of nature.
    Thanks Professor and Jess.
    The impossible odds don’t seem as far out of reach as I thought they were.

    Yes, besides a concentration of talents Jess has the gift of a winning personality, one that allows him to look straight at a guy like Christopher Walken and instantly connect without offending the big guy (or gal). He looks pretty crazy but comes across as grounded and someone you can work with, a good combo. One of your more interesting videos, thanks.

    Like so many other commenters have said, I had never heard of Jess before but am obviously familiar with his work. Both he and his stories are hilarious.
    I also had never heard of @RockSugar prior to watching this. Immediately following the podcast, I felt like I needed to go check out Reimaginator. I’ve only made it through the first two songs, but it has made me remember why I fell in love with music in the first place. I’ve literally had tears of joy in my cheeks from the emotions stored inside me that I thought had died.
    Thank you Jess for your incredible talent and Professor for bringing his story to me.

I like how Jess and his band mates re-interpret, and/or re-create old,classic rock and metal songs and create 'new', exciting versions of the music we enjoyed listening to while growing up.Kind of like Weird Al, but instead of parodying, taking old songs and giving them a new lease on life 🙂

    His viewpoint is one I love. Not afraid to laugh at himself and others- but not to mock, in a good natured way. He gets that life is really funny, even when it's serious. He sees the fun and humor. Instead of a panic over being sued, he can look back and laugh. A real gift for his own sanity and that of the people around him. He takes joy in coincidence, connections and circumstances. We can all learn from that.

    Professor,
    Just started watching you, you are freakin' amazing! I'm 66 and spent the 70's living in Culver City and hanging out on Friday and Saturday nights on the Sunset Strip. Saw and hung out with bands at so many parties from 1973 to 1978, some became legends(Aerosmith, Van Halen, etc.) Some faded away, some lost members to OD, some blended with other bands. Your research is mind boggling, I and all your followers really appreciate what you do for us. Thank you! 🤘☮️

    Thank you so much for sharing this Adam! . As an Aussie, I had never heard of Jess Harnell or "Rock Sugar" before. I was totally unaware of his prolific career as a voice over artist. I was completely captivated by what an incredibly warm, charming and funny man he is. His story about meeting Christopher Walken had me in stitches!. I was initially incredibly disappointed to find out from this interview, that their first album was literally no longer able to be sold. So I tracked it down, managing to find a second hand, autographed CD of "Reimaginator" , and have bought it and a new digital copy of "Reinventinator" in Australia today. (Perhaps "It's a small world after all" is the next album....!) I have listened and re=listened to "Reimaginator" now end to end. I am now absolutely hooked. What an awesome band. It is such a blast to rock out to this album "Up to 11!". Listening to this interview, then listening to this album has absolutely made my day, put a smile on my face, and made me a "Rock Sugar" fan!

In Animaniacs, I love it when he's running around saying he's got a "potty emergency" and nobody will let him go to the bathroom.
