Nice list! For JLC, I think the Polaris Memovox would've been awesome. For A. Lange Sohne, I think some version of the Lange 1 with its iconic layout would've been a better choice. And finally, some brands I'm sad to see didn't make the list: Zenith, Breguet, and Blancpain.
Longines - good choice. Moon phase nice, but my suggestion is the 1946 Chrono. A lovely "retro" dial, and the case is beautifully finished/polished. It is very "handsome", as they'd probably say in the late 40's. The Monaco is certainly worthy of your choice. Again lovely looking, beautifully finished. (The Seiko "Monaco" from the early 70's is also a really nice chrono. NOT in the "luxury" category, but a very, very good watch.) I wore mine from 1975 every day until 1978, when it was replaced by another (totally different) watch.
I'm not from Mars but from a nearby planet in the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy and have to agree with Tom's list. So many great watches but so few wrists. It's great to see the Longines Moon phase there, it's quite an understated watch that looks great in the flesh. I could mention a few others from the brand that might also fit but I won't bore you more than I already have. There were a couple of other surprises in the list as well. A JLC that wasn't a Reverso but the cracking Polaris and the Calatrava and not the usual ones from PP. The only other surprise was that the Submariner was the classic no date version. Well done Tom.
In no particular order: 1. Omega Speedmaster 2. Rolex GMT or Datejust 3. Patek Philippe Calatrava 4. Jaeger Le Coultre Reverso 5. A. Lange & Sohne Datograph 6. Grand Seiko Spring Drive Snowflake 7. Cartier Tank or Santos 8. Vacheron Constantin Overseas 9. Audemars Royal Oak 10. Breguet Classique I own only the Speedmaster and don't have an interest in the majority of them. But they are icons nonetheless.
I'd swap the Saxonia moonphase for the Ultra Thin, picked the Longines Master Collection Chronograph instead of the normal moonphase and the Explorer 1 instead of the Submariner.
Saw a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms in the flesh the other day. Gotta say, that is one beautiful watch. Dare I say it...the prettiest dive watch of them all.
@@golfinguru11 Yeah. You're right. I didn't think of the Patrimony. Dress watches aren't really my thing. I like the Fiftysix because it's a little more sporty.
I'd definetly add one of the new electrostatic Accutrons. They are still first gen tech with all that brings with it (servicing only in Japan, ginormous size dictated by the movement being made up of technology never thought possible at the size, strict (though arguably innovative) power management, ...) but they look truly amazing and if we consider Spring Drive the next step in the evolution after Mechanical and Quartz, I'd argue that electrostatic is the step after that. The silky smooth sweep (I have yet to see one next to a Spring Drive but as it stands I could be convinced that it is, as unbelievable as that might be, slightly smoother than the already amazing tech by Grand Seiko), the electrostatic turbines generating power via movement, that electrostatic motor, all put on display with no attempt to hide it are pure poetry. It is nerdy, but in the best way, not just pushing the envelope of what was thought technologically possible, but also celebrating it. The second they get one even close to wearable for my tiny wrists, I will fork over the cash. Also, hard to say whether this still constitues your definition of Luxury in the watch space, but maybe a Junghans Max Bill, just for being, as far as I am aware, the only watch currently in production that doesn't just talk about being "minimalistic" and "bauhaus-inspired" but has actual credentials dating back to that art school/innovation factory/never ending party. Minimalism is often adopted, both by new up-and-comers and established players, but most just ape it without understanding the minutiae. The Max Bill, in my humble opinion, does this better than anyone else, most likely simply due to the architect and namesake behind it.
I generally have no problem with any of your choices, but for JLC I would have picked a Master Control model, not the Polaris. Also, I would have selected Panerai above Tag Heuer. Aside from that, great picks!
@@petrolhead007 I have tried the Polaris on in store and I think it would pleasantly surprise you. It is way better than it looks in photos. The Control and Duoface are awesome as well. Dressier though.
Well done, Tom. Your apprenticeship under Andrew is bearing fruit. From Longines to Patek Philippe, your list is flawless. Great overview of luxury watches.
I have both the 2022 models, the seamaster 300 black on rubber strap and sub date. I cant say which I like more. They both compete for wrist time. Omega is more fun and dial is something to look at, Rolex has a bit more elegant look. Omega is extremly accurate, rolex just really solidly made with great strap. Every one has its own advantages. I really loved the first watch in the video, the Longines, lovely dial and amazing price.
Accuracy is overrated. My most accurate watch is a Mido Commander 1959 Chronometer. I have set it 8 days ago and still shows the same time as the reference.
Longines could do better but I suspect they're kept on a tight leash by Swatch Group so as not to upset the Omega brand position, Their recent Ultra-Chron diver reissue is amazing value for the money. A wide range here which in some case only just makes it to luxury in the accepted sense, but if funds are low a Seiko 5 is a luxury. I'd have included something from Cartier with their resurgence in sales and the JLC should have been a Reverso.
The Seamaster 300 M is my first and so far only high end watch, and I'm loving it more every day. Like we say back home, it's a chunk of steel ("un fierro"). Reliable, beautiful.
Like many I suspect, I began my horology journey with the generic option. The pre ceramic Sub, which I adored totally. Over time, tastes change slightly and you dive head first into the realm of brands you had never heard of to begin with but my Lange sits happily with the RM, Breguet and others, that mean just as much as the Accurist, my late father gave me when I was young. Buy the piece that makes you happy when you see it on your wrist, never when you see it on someone else's. Namaste all.
The omega coaxial 8800 movement is pretty much bomb proof, I've had it in my little aqua terra for a year and a half and it's still going strong... 💪basically idiot proof
For me, the Tudor Black Bay 58 is better than the Rolex Submariner. It's far more versatile and just plain looks nicer and cleaner. The Sub may have been a go to choice 10 years ago, but I think the BB58 has replaced the Sub in a lot of folks minds.
It desperately needs a new clasp though, like they have on the new Pelagos 39. Changing the bracelet to a non faux riveted would also satisfy quite some people.
For me the Credor Eichi ii is a Calatrava for the thinking man. Hand made, hand painted porcelain dial, perfect size, and a stonking movement. The perfect watch, in my eyes.
I appreciate how you guys toe the line between "this watch is not only great, it's also great compared to its closest Rolex counterpart! Rolex isn't everything, people! There are tons of quality options out there" alongside "y'know, Rolex makes some pretty f***ing great watches, too. There's a reason they're always in the conversation." That said... man, I wish I had the budget for a Seamaster 300 right now.
Actually, I've just bought a GS white birch as I've been eyeing that dial for over a year now, but yes the Night birch does bring about a different character. Thought the JLC master control deserves the place over the Polaris, though both are nice.
Yeah but Tudor is a bit soulless. Longines is great, I think the problem is they don't try to pretend they are precious. Any airport has a Longines store (or a Swatch store to be precise with a Longines section) unlike say Omega. This makes the brand feel more accessible. However lets keep some context, they are still $3-4k watches and that is not peanuts. Still for the top 0.01% (or even less).
Like that JLC and the Monaco are here. The Rolex should have been the Day-Date. Fifty-Fathoms or Odysseus could have replaced the Submariner or even the BB58 really. Not that the Sub isn't a better watch than the 58, but it just seems pointless at this point. I wish Breguet, Glashütte and F. P. Journe would have made the list. Also Zenith instead of Breitling. Too many "celebrities"
I would add the Tudor black bay GMT to this list. Beautiful watch that has history, is made for those who love travelling(like me), and comes at a good starting price.
Please, stop pushing the Tudor to TOP watch brands. I can understand that with an almost unlimited budget for advertisement ("influencers" included) and BIG brother behind them, the watches are gaining popularity - especially when you can buy them. But do they belong to TOP brands? Definitely not.
I love my Tudor. But it is NOT a luxury watch. It is a tool watch, set for a particular purpose. Rolex is a luxury brand. So is Patek, AP, Vacheron, Lange, ad nauseam. But Tudor is a real watch for dealing with real situations. It is not a luxurious experience to buy or wear one. And that is a damn good thing.
Will your wife come back on and do one for women? I usually just shop the smaller end of mens watches. But I'd love an opinion for womens watches specifically.
Breitling Navitimer over Chronomat. Also No.2 the Lange movement finishing is better at the entry level compared to No.1 Calatrava which is sort of entry for Patek? Rolex GMT is also iconic, 1st GMT watch that is the "blueprint" for GMT watches if I am not wrong. The Glycine Airman predates GMT but its just a 24 hour hand and dial. Lastly the Daytona which demand for it is just crazy.
It's very clear that you guys hate Audemars Piguet . But thanks for including A Lange and JLC in the list. Was surprising to see Longine and Tag - thought the list was based on the public perceptions, which proved to be wrong towards the other half of the video. No Cartier, Breguet and Girard-Perregaux? They could have easily replaced Longine and Tag.
Their hatred is strong for Vacheron Constantin also. Jeebus AP's Royal Oak was responsible for Patek's Nautilus which may have saved them. I call B.S. Heck even Tudor is better than some of the others along with Cartier(which I'm not a fan of) Now I know why they use the microphones, because who could show their face after this shlt show
@@brinkee7674 Thanks for highlighting the omission of VC. They don't believe in the holy trinity of the watches. Personally, I respect VC for the mere fact that when you walk in to VC store, you can see their watches, and you can actually buy them. And of course they're amongst the very best, part of the trinity.
I'll probably get some ire here, but - as much as I like clean design and minimalism - the Calatrava did age, and not that great. Movado Museum is so similar, even has the same proportions - and pulls of the look well, because if you do minimalism wrong it ends up simplistic and flat.
Grand Seiko has been up and coming for a long while now. Grand Seiko can no keep making the mistakes and ride on this narrative given some of their shortcomings in the brand. Fix those bracelets and give us a proper extension for example. You are no longer young and upcoming now that you are middle-aged!
I love JLC and I'm no fanboy of Rolex, but by god the Submariner without a date window works so much better than the Polaris with that mismatched white date windown on a black/anthracite dial and cream indexes. Sometimes less truly is more. Just a comment on the watches shown not the brands as a whole, before the flame wars commence.
Longines? Mama Sawtch wants no competition with Omega. They can write "heritage" or "master" as they like; but a good vintage Longines or Omega is far more refined.
Andrew, do an expose on Titoni watches. Another channel featured them but as I tried to look up this Swiss watch company, I couldn’t find anything. They seem like a more polished Tag Heurer but without the heritage :-)
@@ivanharlokin 1. A mere 1mm larger than the 126610LN. Do you have girly wrists? Perhaps you still wear pretty skirts and skip around with your hair in pigtails. 2. The HEV is a part of the SMP’s iconic design. 3. Unless you are one of the small minority who buy the watch with the intention of dicing with it, that point is pretty much moot. You’re too lazy to take it off your wrist and take a few mere seconds to adjust the bracelet? I’m simply lost for words. 4. The latest Seamaster only has AR coating on the inside of the crystal. 5, it has an arguably better movement which has been lauded by experts to be the best horological development in 250 years. 6. The bracelet is far superior with actual weight to it. After 60 years the Sub bracelet still feels like tin. 7. It’s a far more refined, under the radar timepiece than the Sub. Have you ever been to London wearing a Rolex in broad daylight? I guarantee you that if you arrived in London wearing it, you won’t be going home with it. 8. Walt Hardinge said he owned both watches and enjoyed the Seamaster better. How can that be wrong? It’s his own personal feeling to which he has every right to. 9. Wouldn’t you be far more suited to a dainty piece like a Gucci to match your Village People/ Freddie Mercury type image?
When will Omega get rid of the awful Helium escape valve? I don’t know how they would come up with it in the first place. It totally ruins their watches.
I'm from Mars. We have no dive watches there because we have no water, so I really don't get the Submariner. Also the moon phase watches seem really dumb - I would get it if you were expats living on Mars and wanted to know what your old moon was doing... but if you're still living there on Earth, can't you just look up into the sky??
The submariner is undoubtedly iconic, but as a current top 10, maybe it's time to swap it for the BB58? Great design, very few negative points, reasonable pricing , actually obtainable, and a strap master.
Never going to happen. Tudor will always be the little brother, so it will never wear the crown no matter how good. It's similar to the way people won't acknowledge some Boxster/Cayman variants are better than the 911.
A dream list! Though I would include cartier santos in place of the tag, and either master thin / reverso in place of the polaris. O man all beautiful pieces why are we in this stupid hobby!

not disputing the prestige status, but i would rather leave patek off the list. i would have made a second list where patek ap and vc were all on the same list as they are widely viewed as the holy trinity brands that are always in the same conversation. maybe put a cartier santos, or some breguet, zenith, or a panerai. also i love longine but its maybe below these brands so i would have that switched out as well.
Can't beat a Black Casio I'll pick a sensible man wearing a black rock solid $15 Casio with 20 year battery life over a guy with a Rolex... any and every day of the week. Sensible shoes, a high mpg motorbike, a $100 old school washing machine, a classic 1986 IBM PS2 Model M keyboard, a broom and a dustpan, a notebook and a pencil. Someone like Leon the Professional. I myself splurged a little and rock two ebay sniped Casio ABC watches with atomic synced time, solar charging, altimeter, barometer, and compass. One metal band for summer wear, one plastic band for winter wear.
@@Justdisco2 they’re hardly going to ask ! The HEV does look ridiculous in particular and is poor innovation. It just looks stuck i the 90s. With the right updates it would be a fantastic piece.
@@thegraciefighter102 That’s your opinion, I would just say they perfected a work in progress with the seamaster. The 2018 seamaster now surpasses the sub in my humble opinion.
The 56 finishing is closer to a Rolex than a Patek though. Patrimony traditionnelle is the real answer. However, these days I'm no longer into watch investment. I bought two homes, one in Malibu and the other in California, spent a total of $24 million, and the return on investment is crazy-far better than collecting watches for me.

I must be one of the only people who don’t like rolex … even the famous submarina… I went for the Seamaster 300
If I were rich, my 3 watch collection would be Rolex Explorer, Tag Heuer Monaco, Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean
Who asked you?
This is a great list. The few I disagree with is really just me being contrarian; there aren't any substantial arguments.
You guys are great! The Top Gear "Grand Tour" hosts of watches. Cheers
I would add the Tudor black bay GMT to this list. Beautiful watch that has history, is made for those who love travelling(like me), and comes at a good starting price.
Good choice. Wearing mines on a jubilee bracelet. Worth every penny
Please, stop pushing the Tudor to TOP watch brands. I can understand that with an almost unlimited budget for advertisement ("influencers" included) and BIG brother behind them, the watches are gaining popularity - especially when you can buy them. But do they belong to TOP brands? Definitely not.
@@TomasLonga nooo don’t tell people the truth lmaoo
I love my Tudor. But it is NOT a luxury watch. It is a tool watch, set for a particular purpose. Rolex is a luxury brand. So is Patek, AP, Vacheron, Lange, ad nauseam. But Tudor is a real watch for dealing with real situations. It is not a luxurious experience to buy or wear one. And that is a damn good thing.
Longines is luxury and Tudor is not? 🤯
Love this channel
Will your wife come back on and do one for women? I usually just shop the smaller end of mens watches. But I'd love an opinion for womens watches specifically.
Great list!!!
I love the Patek.
I tend to agree as I own both a Grand Seiko and an Omega and have my eyes on a Reverso. However no Vacheron on the list?

Jlc reverso? Agree on the Calatrava but need crown guards for me. 😉
“The Speedmaster has been sullied by a bunch of plastic replicas lately” hahaha I die
1815 chrono. Black dial. The end.

What about hublot and Audemars Piguet?
I'll probably get some ire here, but - as much as I like clean design and minimalism - the Calatrava did age, and not that great.
Movado Museum is so similar, even has the same proportions - and pulls of the look well, because if you do minimalism wrong it ends up simplistic and flat.
Patek Calatrava 6119G, ALange & Sohne Saxonia Thin White Gold, Rolex Submariner no date…..

I’ve owned both the submariner and the the omega Sea-master and and without a doubt the Omega Seamaster is superior in every way imaginable !!!
Not really:
1) Oversized
2) Helium escape wart
3) Non-tapering bracelet, with no on-the-fly adjustment
4) AR coating on the outside of the crystal
Awesome list.
When will Omega get rid of the awful Helium escape valve? I don’t know how they would come up with it in the first place. It totally ruins their watches.
I notice in the picture of the Calatrava the second hand is at 30 secs & the minute hand is almost at the next minute! Someone mis-set “The Watch”!

Did anyone else get motion sickness from that Breitling ad?
@@epbrown01 Never say never. =) The people will decide. You may be right, Daniel may be right. Only "time" will tell!
Spot on
vacheron constantin patrimony. Drops mic walks away.

The JLC should absolutely have been a Reverso. The Polaris line shows promise, but it’s still a bit of a mess.
The Polaris is beautiful, I think it should stay.
@@marcusrawlinson5024 It has potential, but JLC is still feeling its way around it. The Reverso is an incomparable icon.
I don´t get the moonphase thing. It doesn´t look good on any watch and it´s completely pointless.
I swear the happiness I feel when #nkuwan uploads a video is beyond!!!!
A dream list! Though I would include cartier santos in place of the tag, and either master thin / reverso in place of the polaris.
O man all beautiful pieces why are we in this stupid hobby!
Tudor BB58 should have been in Tags spot
Can anyone offer an informed opinion as to where Dubey Scheldenbrand falls in the hierarchy of laudable watch brands?
Not to wear when you are in Holland! Otherwise you will lose it. I recommend a casio or a Vostok.
Guys! You're doing a great job 👏😊.
Please 🙏 do me and as well others a favor, and kindly add in your description a list of the watches you discussed.
It will be helpful should one want to do more research online and/or find it in your store.
Keep up the good job 👍😊
Thanks
Although the JLC Polaris is lovely, I'd say if you were to buy just one JLC it'd have to be the Reverso.
not disputing the prestige status, but i would rather leave patek off the list. i would have made a second list where patek ap and vc were all on the same list as they are widely viewed as the holy trinity brands that are always in the same conversation. maybe put a cartier santos, or some breguet, zenith, or a panerai. also i love longine but its maybe below these brands so i would have that switched out as well.
Can't beat a Black Casio
I'll pick a sensible man wearing a black rock solid $15 Casio with 20 year battery life over a guy with a Rolex... any and every day of the week.
Avoiding chronographs at all costs because of the service costs

the Omega seamaster is a better timepiece than the rolex sub in my humble opinion
Hasn’t evolved and has too many ugly polarising features
@@thegraciefighter102 nobody ever asked me if my Omega was fake, polarising features indeed, No dumb waiting list for me.
@@Justdisco2 too big, too thick and a watch for posers - just my humble opinion !
The Calatrava is the only Patek I like, but I would have gone for the Vacheron Fiftysix instead. All the heritage at less than half the price.
How did you grow your money to $24m, I'm impressed, I have a lump sum i don"t want to leave it in the bank, whats your cash flow like?
I have a financial advisor (trader) she grows my liquid assets, and I reinvest the weekly payouts back into real estate.
Great move, please can you share her with me, or maybe her name so I could search for her online, thanks
Cathy Jemar Carlone look her up.
