The Early Development of The Spectacular Spider-Man

The Spectacular Spider-Man was a show that ran from 2008 to 2009, and its widely considered to be the best Spider-Man adaptation to ever be created. The story behind the shows development is an interesting one , so lets briefly go over the shows creation and what lead to its eventual cancellation. Since The Spectacular Spider-Man appeared in Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse which marks the first time the character has appeared since the show’s cancellation in 2009., Its crazy that after so many Spider-Man shows, very few have matched the quality of this series. The animation, characters, action, writing. Everything about the show was a love letter to the original comics, and the many adaptations that came before it.

Some say that Disney is unforgivable for what they’ve done to Star Wars, but what I’m most mad about is what they did to this series.
What I will say is that Disney obtained the TV rights when they bought Marvel since Marvel at the time had a hold of it.
Its sad to accept but the truth is that there was no reason for them to keep Spectacular going. Business wise it made no sense for Disney to continue allowing Sony to produce the show and benefit of merch sales.

This show deserved so much more. They somehow made the reveal that Norman Osborn was the Green Goblin actually shocking. It truly was the best Spider-Man show by far and would be hands down if it was actually finished.
The way they handled his reveal was masterful. Especially when they tried to fake you out by making you think goblin was someone else.

.... Well, gentlemen, I think we can safely say you succeeded. Barring maybe the 90s show (depending on opinion), I do not believe any Spider-Man show so far has been as iconic as this one.
Spider-Man The New Animated Series didn’t actually have low ratings at all in fact it had quite a large viewer base but MTV cancelled the show because “it didn’t fit in with other programming” which sucks because it’s probably the most unique Spider-Man cartoon. The creators going for a 16:9 format in 2003 while most shows were 4:3 just shows how ahead of the time the show it was. I love the mature themes of the show, those Electro episodes are so depressing lol.
It's truly sad that this series put its faith in the wrong network.

The animation was pretty bad but I usually let it slide since that was like during 2003

The people behind Spectacular Spider-Man had so much planned after Season 2, but it was a real shame that it was abruptly axed just when its popularity finally soared. And instead we got later animated Spidey shows by Disney that just weren't faithful to the either character and the source material.
I remember watching this show as a teenager, watching new episodes as they came out and being hyped af after the season 2 cliffhanger and eagerly waiting for a 3rd season. Reading the the news of this show's cancellation was heartbreaking to say the least

Honestly aside from One More Day, the 2000s were peak Spider-Man. A brilliant film trilogy, multiple shows which each felt unique and a plethora of games available for most, if not all consoles. That one render of Spider-Man that was on merchandise around this time was peak character design

Nothing makes me more mad than this cartoon getting canned. The fact alot of obscure characters at that time like Mr. Negative, Jackal and Hydro-Man was going to be introduced or was already introduced is amazing. Cook and Weisman were gifted storytellers. Their writing paid off in the long run especially with that Green Goblin twist. They even was planning to adapt the clone saga! The random stuff like Flash boxing Peter just gave away the amount of care they put into this series.
The first time I found out they planned to actually adapt the Clone Saga I was shocked they'd even consider it, but since then I've realized that they would have definitely excelled in making that storyline exciting and fulfilling like the Osborn/Goblin twist which has already been done a bunch of times yet they made it their own. I don't think I'm alone in wishing we got those 5 seasons and 3+ movies, would've been the most complete Spider-Man adaptation beyond the comics -- but more streamlined.
The fact somewhere around another universe, they got all these seasons and movies 😂
The colors of Gwen original design for this show...actually kinda looks like an early inspiration of Spider Gwen, even having pink highlights in the hair like in Across the Spiderverse.

The creators would be pleased to know that we STILL hold this show to the golden standard that it had created. It WAS *the* Spider-Man show.
I just cannot forget this show. Back in school days, I watched this show when it was aired on TV. On this day I was watching an episode where Gwen kissed Peter, guess what, my mom entered the room and was like "What the hell are you watching?". And then I was trying to explain her that it was just a Spiderman cartoon 😌😂
In my opinion this and 90s animated series are the only shows to both potray and use Venom properly.
They may not be able to continue the series, but Sony can release a film that continues the Spectacular storyline.

The fact that Disney canceled Spectacular Spider-Man still makes my Blood boil to this day and if the other Spidey related shows do well then we could see Disney+ pick up the series and we finally get S3.

I think this show deserved more on it’s time,but now after years fanbase only growing,we got Spectacular spidey’s comeback in atsv,justice is here,this show have a huge legacy,and I’m glad that this happening.
I have this show on blu-ray with embossed silpcover and paid around $55 which is more than the retail $34.99, what a collection that's now out of print!
I really like the 90s animated series as well, hopefully we get a collection of that on blu-ray as well!
Well can Beyond the Spider verse atleast have the Spectacular Spider-Man as a major character, and have some of his villans as antagonists.
You cut 3 seasons and people still think this is the definitive spider-man show, safe to say they achieved their goal

Yep, it still hurts. The show aired on Cartoon Network here in Brazil, and we'd get new episodes fairly close to the original airing, but my anxiety always attacked and made me rush to UA-cam to watch them as soon as possible, and then I'd watch them again on CN. I loved it so, so much! Still do! To this day, it's still my favorite Spider-Man animated series ever, even though I'll always have a lot of respect towards 1994's Spider-Man, which was my introduction to the character and its universe when I was a kid. And man, the heartbreak of reading the news of the cancellation of The Spectacular Spider-Man. I was so devastated by all of this that I started hating Disney with all my heart, even more after seeing what Ultimate Spider-Man was like. To know years later about the crew's plans for further stories they wanted to develop made me way sadder than I thought was possible. With all of that, it was heartwarming to see Spectacular's Spidey, again voiced by Josh Keaton, in Across the Spider-Verse, even if it was very brief.
Because Spectacular is a dramatic show, Ultimate Spider-Man is comical 🤔😁
I still have memories of when I was little and was devastated when I found out it was axed, And after watching the Spider-Verse it makes me still have hope for the series to come back to finish the story they left unfinished for a decade. But like Shrek once said: "Like that's ever gonna happen"
I loved spectacular Spider-Man it was such a amazing show and badass and tons of fun.
Same this is one best adaptation of spider-man show it would been cool to see Peter and mj married in the show so much potential wasted

Made it time. 💯 but i love the character period. Earth x peter parker is my favorite( officer parker) we need more quality animated series like spectacular. At least we got to see him again briefly in spider-verse. Thanks for this amazing video

I was aware of the show’s announcement in the rewards terminal on Spider-Man: Friend or Foe when I was six. This is unforgivable Disney apathy towards the show, buying Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Fox’s entertainment assets, rejecting George Lucas’s outline for the sequel trilogy by copying the original trilogy, divided the fans of Star Wars, pumping out MCU content after Endgame in one year, a bad start to phase 5 and now ruining Indiana Jones by treating the same as Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi. Disney is gonna crash and burnin the next decade.
Must have been nice to anticipate the shows first episode.

There’s no way Disney would’ve put in the effort or put their ego aside long enough to bring Spectacular back, but they could’ve at least tried with Ultimate. It seems like the only people who cared about that show were the animators, and props to them for that, especially having to work with such stale character models and colours.

I’ve been thinking lately that a Spider-Man show in the style of or at least similar to into the spider verse would be so cool. We haven’t gotten a good 3d animated spidey show since Spider-Man tas, but that animation was so ass. Also, I wouldn’t mind some kick ass fight scenes. We haven’t gotten the best choreography lately

watching this show as a kid was my favorite, i always loved it and i will still love it, i remember my mother playing it for me and i came to the end of the show and i wanted my mother to play the next episode and she said " there is no more " and then i forgot about the show and after some years i found out what really happend to it, thanks for this information
Disney truly cancelled the best Marvel projects during the 2000's. So frustrating they let go Spectacular Spider Man and Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

This show will forever have a special place in my heart I remember when I was 7 and my bed time was at 7pm for school but the show aired at 7pm in the uk so my mum allowed me to stay up an extra 30 minutes just to watch this show😂

Same I just finished it for the first time, I was expecting it when I went in to be an above average cartoon with some adult themes, I wasn't expecting it to be one of the greatest pieces of Spider-Man media of all time, on tier with the new films. They do all the characters justice and it's such a mature and well written show, it's such a shame Disney screwed it over so bad. Here's hoping the show's revived popularity shows them that new seasons would be highly received by fans!

Spectacular Spider Man should continue as a Disney+ original series since Disney owns the television distribution rights and the series is already on Disney+.
The Spectacular Spider-Man still belongs with Sony....
They don't own the "spectacular Spider-Man title copyright show" and no Disney Will ruin that show ,if the show is continued It's should be under Sony label because that's where the show being Made by the Sony team
I can never understand why Disney ruined spectacular spiderman, are we even having any hopes that it will ever come back again? Like it was cool to see him apear in Across the spider verse, but for real like for like 10 seconds of a cameo it was really dissapointing to see him just for this short and we will never see him again

Surely seeing as Sony own the rights to make movies they could make a set of movies that’s actually just season 3 split up into however many movies and release them directly to streaming, I think they could if they wanted to but they don’t think they could make money on it so they won’t do it, truly is a shame because to me spectacular is my definitive version of Spider-Man

Love The Spectacular Spider-Man. The best Spider-Man cartoon, the best Spider-Man adaptation by far and one of the best comic book animation series. I have it second only to Batman: The Animated Series. Still pissed by it's cancellation.

the audio is very quiet again, had to turn up my speakers to max. otherwise, great video!
Sorry, nothing I can do about the audio due to where I live and other circumstances. If I tried using software to raise the volume then you'd hear the very loud hissing in the back, people talking, and a sharp esss sound that hurts your ears.

I don't understand why Sony and Disney can't just greenlight a season 3. They work together on the mcu films and look how its working out.
Heck there are tons of series they could bring back. Nostalgia is big now and they could totally use that to there advantage like what their doing with the 90s X-men revival. Heck Avengers EMH is owned by disney at least bring that back.

This show is amazing, my only complaint was the art style choice, doesnt look bad on some characters but jj jameson, and peter himself look so akward.
Also kind of a nickpick, but why did they give peter a birthmark, i think i got OCD or smth, because its been bugging me seeing it, without it i would probaly be fine, i dont even understand why it bugs me 💀

I do wish Spider-Man’s suit in Spectacular Spider-Man was a little more saturated and I wish they kept the lenses from the concept art. How would you feel if spectacular Spider-Man was revived with Avengers EMH’s art style just like how Batman TAS was revived with Superman TAS’s art style 1 year later ? ( Also it was confirmed that Josh Keaton was going to reprise his role as Spider-Man but his lines got dubbed by Drake Bell )
And just so you know when they announced that they announced that an ultimate Spider-Man adaptation was in development, it was the biggest bullcrap that Disney could ever do, that wasn't an ultimate Spider-Man faithful adaptation that was the biggest family friendly shitbird tha ever existed, i hate that company, we deserve a faithful ultimate Spider-Man adaptation
