I don't believe that I believe there is a serious way of interpreting what the author was trying to go for

I had to work for MGK a few years ago for a local event.... his lack of awareness and self entitlement knows no bounds. The highlights: skipped his soundcheck in a line up with multiple artists, then threw the crew under the bus when his guitar (which wasn't on any paperwork or input lists) didn't work until 8 seconds into the 2 song set, which he did publicly to the crowd. Bitching to production because you're an idiot and we weren't prepared is one thing, putting the people working all day for you on blast for no reason so that we loose our jobs (and possibly potential jobs) is uncalled for. Especially when all he had to do was show up 1 hour earlier and all of it would have been avoided.

One of the things I learned about it messaging, as a graphic designer, is to have outside people interpret your work. And if people constantly interpret it "wrong", that's on you as the artist for poorly expressing/conveying the message. That said, I've seen folks on twitter do some wtaf takes and those tweets gain so much traction that the original tweet that was being responded to gets lost in the wave of poor interpretations/misinformation.

I was a teenager in the 00's and knew quite a few people who struggled with mental health including self-harm, and that was a huge problem among teenagers back then. (Probably still a huge problem now unfortunately.) It had nothing to do with the popularity of pop punk or emo music and everything to do with the fact that the 00's were just a really fucked up time to be young. Most of the kids I was friends with who struggled with self-harm didn't shop at Hot Topic or listen to emo, they were just kids with other serious problems in their lives like abuse, neglect, poverty, trauma, etc. and basically no access to mental health care. The fact that nowadays people talk pretty openly about the importance of mental health has probably (hopefully) led to a reduction in self-harm to some degree. In regards to MGK, I always got the impression that him using razor blade imagery had nothing to do with self-harm and everything to do with nose beers. So yeah, not particularly offensive, just embarrassing.

I think emo bands like My Chemical Romance helped our society realize the importance of taking care of our mental health. They've made everybody more aware of significant issues like self-harm, depression, addiction. We can thank those bands for making mental health topics not tabu. There's still room for improvement, but at least less and less people treat mentally ill patients like "wackos" or "freaks" and we're not ashamed to talk about our struggles.

When it comes to the "explaining art" thing, if it's all about how your audience perceives and interprets your work, but constantly gets it wrong, then isn't the problem here that he is just really bad at art? When someone problematic for anything (racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.) gets called out, they always deny that they're the problem when everyone else in the room knows it, recognizes it, and calls it out. He can say his art is whatever it is, but we as an audience can all agree it's something else. That lyric explanation was total bs too, if you're so upset that people misinterpret the lyric, "use a razor to take off the edge" then maybe you should've actually written the line as you meant it instead of wording it as much as possible to specifically allude to self harm.
Basically, "I shouldn't have to explain my art" is a chickenshit way of saying, "I don't want to or have to acknowledge my responsibility as someone with influence when I do something intentional."

This is one of the best takes at the subject as far as i've seen.
In my opinion, the "I shouldn't have to explain my art" stance should be like a mindset an artist should take in the process of making, something like "how do i do it so i can convey my message without having to explain it in detail?".

This!! So much hitting the nail square on the head 👏
My father was an extremely gifted oil painter, mostly modern surrealist landscapes. He was also an extreme narcissist, very histrionic and manipulative. He would get really pissed at individual interpretations of his work, and would try to ram his own visions and explanation down others throats. But no one ever saw it the way he did, and his explanations often ruined the experience for others.
As a woodworker, I fully understand the frustration when others don't see my creations the way I do. BUT, I always empathize with others vision of my creation, and in seeing it through their perception it opens up new avenues for me, fueling my own ideas in new ways.

    • @AdamGaffney96
      @AdamGaffney96 3 місяці тому +3

Absolutely this. When something is left intentionally vague, and there are multiple valid interpretations you cannot get upset when people interpret it differently. You can absolutely provide your own explanation, and get annoyed if people attribute their interpretation to your genuine meaning. But you can't leave it vague, not clear anything up and still get annoyed at people for having alternate interpretations.

That escalated quickly...And just to start this: I dislike the guitar and MGK, jus so no one can call me a fanboy for trying to argue objectively about this.
      1) No, the conversation is not the same as people denying accountability for social problematic stances/comments. That's a straw man. Art can be interprated in many ways, period. Just because gen X and Z are literally brainwashed into seeing a razor blade and thinking "uuuuh self-harm" is not his fault. It's an issue that needs to be solved. I know people with that issue, and many actually still have razor blades in their household. Do I panic at that sight? No! Because not everyone uses them for that purpose, AND it's the last thing they would use after therapy.
      2) That lyric explanation is exactly what he meant. He told a story of shaving being his therapy long before those lyrics existed.
      3) No, it's not an excuse. No artist should ever need to explain their art. Be it music, paintings, books, movies, games. And the funny thing is...why would he explain his reasoning? You are proof of it not even mattering. He explains what the razor blade means to him and you don't believe it anyways. You kinda demand something but you don't accept what you ask for.
And like I said, I don't even like the guy and find the guitar hideous. But the irrational conversations about this, are just annoying.
And just because a majority agrees on the symbolism meaning something, doesn't mean it's a fact.

    • @neros_soren
      @neros_soren 3 місяці тому

@@heffatheanimal2200 There is a huge difference tho. If everything you do, art wise, is misconstrued and misinterpreted as something harmful or dangerous, tasteless even, I'd argue you have the right to be upset. If your dad would lash out as he did, after everyone called him tasteless, dangerous, a disgrace...read through comment sections and apply everything MGK gets, to your dad. Just as I commented on Finn’s video, I wish that my recent response video was referenced here because a ton of the points you made including the backpedaling, other artists who used razors are all things I addressed. But I also assume this was all made before I uploaded that video.
I just wanna say I’m also not losing sleep too and I’m just as shocked that all of this blew up. Seriously, I make videos on metalcore bands and next day I give TMZ a story!? Like wtf lol
So look I interpreted the guitar wrong BUT it’s still how I interpreted it. I also still think the emo scene has a terrible problem with mental health. I see it every single day with my community, and I’m empathetic about it.
So I agree with a ton of the points you’re making Tank, the one thing I disagree with is saying I did a complete backpedal about Schecter because I’m still doubling down on that overpriced hunk of junk of a guitar. And I know MGK has the final say for sure, but I assumed the company was selling MGK the idea of the guitar to make money off his name. So again I’m calling out Schetcer in my tweet.
But like I said in my response video. There’s so much BS online and crazy how this started a whole debate. But MGK is getting more publicity, going to probably sell more guitars and we’re also talking about mental health more. The more vocal we are about it, the less taboo it is. So as silly as this whole debate is… we’re at least all having a conversation centered around mental health which is the irony in all of this.

Slash doesn't put his name on any number of models of Custom Shop Gibsons all the way to Epiphones because those are the models he designed, envisioned and that inspired his art ... he does it because because he gets a good cut of each sale (and I am pretty sure his management is good enough to put in the contracts that he is paid from revenue or number sold or similar, not profit ...).

Schecter has always been pretty smart in the heavy music scene with who they endorse and what they put out to the market as far as clearly defined demographics go. I can't see a whole lot of young MGK fans buying into this image as new guitar players, it's just cringe-y and way outside of the "beginner guitar" price point. Experienced guitarists know immediately that for $1500, this is insanely overpriced for what it is, and serves no purpose that a $499 Schecter Damien won't. This leads me to believe that MGK is putting the primary funding into this, and Schecter is just agreeing to make it. I just don't see Schecter executives looking at this and saying "MGK fans will see this and buy it to learn guitar on." There's just no shot.

Look, I grew up in the late 80s, went through the 90s and early 00s in the metal and punk scenes as fan and musician, and I've been absolute drowning-level, neck-deep in the depression issue. I've had friends who were, and we're not all here now to discuss it. So I get it, I get being able to extrapolate something from an image that can be uncomfortable. Two points to that.
One, art is supposed to be uncomfortable. It's supposed to make us think, to make us feel, and make us uneasy at times. It's meant to confront many aspects of the world and life and society that we don't like, or are afraid of, or struggle with. To my mind, art bleeds so we don't have to. If you want art to be comfortable, you don't want art. Because art challenges us. Art is a lot of things to a lot of people. It's rarely safe. That being said, do I think this ugly guitar is art? No. Not even remotely. It's edgy shock-value nonsense from someone so enamored with being the hot topic that he's desperate to stay there.
Two, where does this rabbit hole end? Some people are jumpers. Are we going to tear down and cancel buildings and all go underground like the Morlocks? People have sat in a running car in their garage. No more cars? Every time we see a car, we knock on the window and lambast them with anti-suicide lectures when they roll it down? People wanna talk about something that kills when paired with depression? How about alcohol? No more beer or vodka?
Suicide is not good. It's awful, and the process behind it is bleak and leaves behind more suffering than it ends. But if you look hard enough, you can see anything in anything, and to try and enforce opinions on others and make them march to a certain tune because some of us have experiences that hurt with certain life struggles or loss is absurd. Never once did I ever expect someone else to alter their life because I was down low and struggling with depression and anxiety, but then again - and I'm gonna sound like an old fart here - people weren't spending literal hours daily searching with purpose for something to be mad or outraged about back then either. It's a strange time societally, and I agree that people need to take a step back and chill a little. Whether you look for the good in life or the bad, you're gonna find what you look for, I guess...

Saying nobody would have cared about Dime releasing this guitar or pointing at the British Steel album cover (you were so close to understanding my point when you made the off-handed "different time" comment there) ignores that completly.

But everyone is OK with metal and rap lyrics talking about murder and suicide? literally on the top 10 of youtube right now. But an ugly guitar is a problem? It's a shit looking guitar but this is more people trying to find something to be outraged about.

Ban Razorblades! They can be turned into terrible guitars! We're all so offended!

@@AndreJHoward I never said anything to the contrary. I simply pointed out a fact that was glossed over regarding how the reception of the razor blade image has changed over time. Looks to me like you yourself have fallen into the trap of "trying to find something to be outraged about."

@@jeezycreezy4220 Nope I wasn't. I understood your point and I don't disagree with time and space being a factor ... I just think if you look at drill music or death metal these days the lyrics are WAYYYY fucking harder than would have been accepted 20 years ago but an ugly ass guitar is now offensive ... it seems silly and I honestly don't think people actually care that much they just need something to do with their time.

@@AndreJHoward all of that is true, however MGK isn't a drill music or death metal artist. He's pushing this in a pop-punk/emo scene, which is where the re-evaluation of the razorblade as a symbol has taken place. Not only are all of the presented examples of the razorblade being acceptable elsewhere 2 decades or more removed in time, but they're also brought up in scenes other than pop-punk/emo. Imagry that's acceptable in one music scene may not jive well in another. I primarily listen to industrial metal, but the distopian mechanical asthetic associated with than genre doesn't work too well for a country band. Symbols in music aren't universal, and applying the ideas of what's acceptable in one genre to a compleatly different genre is ignorant of that fact.

It's not the design that bugs me, it's the price. That thing is like, $1500. For a single, house brand pick-up, no pre-amp or even tone control, and a basswood body. Nothing on that justifies the price.

I really want to see the sales numbers for his sig models compared to all the other schecter sig models.
I keep seeing the argument that “hE iNsPirEs So MaNy pEoPlE tO pIcK uP tHe GuItAr.” I’m just really curious as to whether or not that dog hunts from a sales perspective.

People have killed with Axes before. A guitar is sometimes called an axe. Some are shaped well, like an axe.
Let’s start shaping guitars like hearts

Kudos for admitting this video is for easy UA-cam views 😂 That has been my firsts guess when seeing the thumbnail and to be fair, I clicked on it because I’m here for the drama that does not affect me personally.

Usually signautre guitars are for people that actually can play guitar, and have changed music to make it better or are really inspiring artists. Squirt Gun Karaoke is no guitar player.

Even without any context, making your signature instrument a novelty guitar shaped like a household item doesn’t fill me with confidence in your artistic maturity and depth.

Dimebag Darrell would not have made a guitar that has no cutaway to reach those highest frets. That is definitely not a guitar made for anyone who plays lead guitar. 🤣
