There are some independent artists like Ren who won’t claim copyright. He is currently in Canada for Lyme disease treatment but he has been responding to reactors and even thanked them for helping spread his music.
I actually watch reaction channels so I can find new music that isn’t mainstream.
Personally, as a part of an independent band that's not signed to a label, I'd love have as many people as possible to hear our music. We even moved away from CD Baby because they kept copyright claiming our music on our behalf which we don't want. Much love man!! 🤘🤘

@@jdkimple It's a mixed bag. It's fine to use CDBaby for streaming distribution. They are probably the most affordable option. You just have to tell them that you do NOT want them to claim copyright for you, just distribution. For actual sales, BandCamp is really the best venue for a small band.
Between you, Nik Nocturnal, Chainbrain, Metalbirb, and Ohrion, I have found literally hundreds of new bands, including Electric Callboy, Archspire, Bloodywood, Erra, and many more. I enjoy you guys as personalities for sure, but I'm always looking for new music, and reactions like yours have easily been the biggest factor in expanding my musical range since learning metal existed.
I think reactions serve another purpose in discovery in between first discovery and fans watching reactions to stuff they like. It's probably where the influencing thing is the strongest; validation to something new. I think this is what happened to me with Lorna Shore. First I saw a reaction or two and was intrigued, but not really on board. When I kept seeing the positive reactions and getting educated on what various reactors point out they like, and getting used to the sound myself, I quite quickly turned into Spotify listening, merch buying, recommending to friends and looking for shows fan. So I think the real or most value may not be in one or two reactions for discovery. Repeat reactions may well have a quality of their own. So getting lucky or indeed buying a reaction or two may be less effective for a new band than they hope.
I've found a ton of bands that i now follow, spend money on, go to shows etc that i likely wouldn't have discovered on my own, thanks to reaction channels. UA-cam algorithms are terrible. Spotify algorithms are terrible. Pandora isn't viable anymore. Google music is defunct and Amazon music is a hot pile of garbage. Word of mouth is still king.
Yeah I think that it reinforces the "hype" of a band. Lorna was everywhere last year, same with Electric Callboy and Sleep Token at the start of this year. If you heard one of their songs or saw one of their videos, and then your feed was full of people losing their shit to them, it reinforced to you that "hey, I need to keep paying attention to this band because they are blowing up".
UA-cam recommends me hundreds of cool little indie metal bands, and sadly I forget about most them because there aren't any, or at least very many, reactions to solidify them in my mind.
Yeah they serve the purpose of a full blown generational mental health epidemic.
As someone who recently reached out to some youtubers for this very thing for new music for a new independent band, thank you for the transparency and honesty.
Bands not doing what they said they would do?? SHOCKING!!! Musicians are known for being organized and reliable!

As someone who doesn't know how music industry stuff works logistically, if someone could fill me in on this, that would be fantastic. How does a band that is unsigned get their music copyright claimed by a publisher? I thought that them being unsigned meant that their music was still in their hands?
Publishers also act as distributors in most cases. There are companies like TuneCore and DistroKid (back in my band days it was CDBaby) that handle a lot of distribution/publishing for unsigned and independent bands.

I know of one independent band whose publisher kept copyright claiming videos on their behalf, even after the band asked them to stop. Eventually they switched to a different publisher, and the problem was solved.
Not mentioned is to file it yourself though the federal government under copyright laws there is 3 types of copyright you can do band name/name of artist which puts likeness into effect. Song Writing/publishing copyright which is lyrics and last is music copyright which really only copyrights melodies and leads of the music. No matter what you have to pay fee. If you use a small publisher like talked about you find they will not copyright the band name or artist name that actually has to be done by the artist themselves they only copyright the music and song writing
I absolutely watch reactors to discover new bands. Hell, I discovered some of my favorite bands such as Orbit Culture, Electric Callboy, Bloodywood, Lorna Shore, We Butter the Bread With Butter etc etc. Also, I may or may not have discovered around 80% of the new bands I listened to last year.
As you said, others have discovered bands through reactors, so it is very short-sighted of publishers/record labels to not work with reactors to spread the good word. Just my 2 cents :)
It's awesome to hear yourself and so many people talk about their music discoveries from reactions. Hell, all the bands you just mentioned (minus WBTBWB) are bands I NEVER listened to until I did them on here, so it's a big discovery opportunity for me as well.
You sound like one of our subscribers lol. I discovered and reacted to each of those bands due to the comment section. Another reason I love doing reactions. The metalheads show me more music.
I found Nightwish and Lovebites strictly due to reaction videos. It's really the only way to find some bands, unless Spotify directs you to them - but then you have to choose to check them out. With reaction videos, if you have reactors you like and are watching lots of reactions, you'll see a wider range of artists that you might like in my experience. Nightwish and Lovebites became my two favorite bands ever thanks to reactions, and I never would have found them otherwise. Saw Nightwish live, plan to see them again, bought some DVDs. Lovebites I have purchased all their DVDs and albums, and tried to get a ticket for a show in Tokyo and would have went if I got it. I plan to see them live.
I never would have heard of Nightwish, Jinjer, and Lorna Shore if not for reactors. Ironically, I don't listen to Nightwish anymore due to reactors pointing out that they are hypocritical douchebags. I bought every Jinjer album inside of a month, some t-shirts, and a ticket for a show that got cancelled almost a year ago. Similar for Lorna Shore, except they haven't played near me yet.
It is amazing how quickly bands forget what makes or breaks them. Metallica went from encouraging tape-sharing to slamming music-sharing. I don't give them the time of day anymore. I have a hard time listening to the older albums that I already owned which sucks, they used to be really good.
Rick Beato talks about how he gets pushback from musicians that were big in the 70s and 80s, which is incredible because Rick is introducing them to a younger audience. AKA Expanding their audience.
I guess the music industry rots a person's brain.

Other groups were finding away to include new digital formats and evolve in the way they reached their audiences.... but nope. Lars became the mouthpiece of corporate stooge rock and they instantly nullified their garage band roots and destroyed this listener's enthusiasm or desire to buy anything else from them. Even to this day.

@@ialeixo84 The only thing I've heard regarding reactors is that some reacted to that their social media account pointed out that Ghost Love Score was the most reacted to song, while the band doesn't interact with any reactors and the money from reactions to their music goes to the label automatically.
It's hilarious how someone that's gotten to know the band would think it was the band that bragged about reactions though. No one in Nightwish has any interest in social media, except Floor who started doing it because someone told her to in order to promote her solo stuff, and it's beyond obvious that their social media accounts are just ran by a third party for general promotion given what's put on there.
Some reactors whined about that their social media account mentioned reactions but the band doesn't support reactors because they don't tell the label to not automatically claim monetization. However, to not support reactors is rather to not allow anyone to use their music at all, like bands like Zeppelin who are very protective of where their music is used. Reactors are still getting plenty of benefit when reacting to popular and established bands though, despite they aren't getting the revenue from those videos, since it grows their channels. If it wasn't beneficial to do so then people wouldn't be reacting to the bands where the labels automatically claim the monetization rights, yet everyone and their dog are reacting to Nightwish because they know what it does (or at least did, as reactions have lost their novelty a bit) for them.
Nightwish just doesn't care about reactions. They don't do anything to stop them nor help them, they just don't take part in it. And even if someone in the band had pointed out that GLS was the top reacted to song, which again no one did, it's still not hypocritical since they didn't ask anyone to do it, it would just be pointing out a general fact. It's only if you ask someone to react (which some bands and labels do) that you have any obligation towards that person.
So the only hypocrisy about that are from those reactors that thinks the bands should allow them to make a profit off the bands' music because it's promotion (even when no one asked them to promote it), but the promotion the reactors get for their channels by using popular music (which they definitely actively wanted) isn't something anyone else should profit from.
So if the OP isn't listening to Nightwish due to this, but still sticking with the ones showing actual hypocrisy, it's a real laugh out loud moment.
Hell I've been here since you had like maybe 65-70 subscribers (since Hypa Hypa)... I have discovered so many bands, big and small, through your channel it has been unreal. And it's because I wasn't on UA-cam that much at the time, I just happen to be on one day and saw your thumbnail and was like "huh... the fuck is Eskimo Callboy?..."

And without this channel, i never would have known of Feuerschwanz for example.
And now, after lurking on youtube for the better part of a decade. I started my own channel. Not a reaction channel, its stuff i know. Labor law, negotiations and calling out stupid things people, organizations and companies do.

Reactions is one of the ways I find new music. Have bought Epica and Jinjer merch. Both bands I found via reactions.
I do love that Arjen (Ayreon) and Ren take a lot of time to comment on reaction videos and thank people for taking the time to listen to and share their music.
Agreed 100 % .... we reactors are essentially promoting bands, groups, singers, solo artists, and all the time there is a copyright claim. I have wracked by brain trying to figure out the future direction of my channel and at the same time having to tell subscribers "no" to so many artists.
Did you managed to get off the copyright claim at least at some videos? We have a reaction channel too and also trying to figure out how to continue and if this is the right direction because, obviously, we enjoy finding new artists
Bands: Communicate! 😀 It's GREAT for your career. Reactors need your honesty. If you gave an honest effort to clear a copyright with your publisher and it fell thru, then take a moment to let the reactor know. Again... Communicate and be honest about it. Part of EVERY band member's job is public relations, to put it generally speaking. It is worth the bit of extra effort if you are an independent, unsigned, or otherwise up-and-coming band. Show that you care about your career and you will be rewarded for it 😀
I would much rather have a band tell me that they tried and their publisher isn't cooperating then a band just ghost me and hope that I'll post it. Haha
@@TankTheTech Just saw your Video, read this comment and contacted our Publisher to ask them, how a collab between our band and a YT Content Creator would look like and if there is something like a guide from them to avoid copyright claims from the bands perspective - because I don't really like the thought of us not having control over our own music. I mean, it's ours, we made it, we should be in charge to decide. But I also never really have informed myself about this issue - I am curious about their answer. Thanks for your video, it might help us dodge problems in the future.

I have a dumb punk band with stuff on CDBaby and Bandcamp and honestly have NO CLUE how I would even begin to get them to turn off YT copyright clams for our music. My old old old band had an album on Sony/Columbia back in the day and I found a director cut of the video we made and posted it and it was instantly removed by sony. It's my fucking band! haha. shit sucks. Are there directions on how to remove the copyright for the different publishers most small bands use somewhere? that would be helpful.
Wintersun played a few years back at Sabatons festival. Jari posted a video from the gig afterwards and got 4 copyright claims on it he had to fight. He got pissed off on Facebook about it. 🤣 Such a weird situation when he gets claims on his own music.
The claim/copyright comes on behalf of their publishers, not the record labels. But I agree that it's not that weird, because an algorithm scans the content and the takes the appropriate action based on how the publisher has their claims set. But the copyright dispute system itself on UA-cam is EXTREMELY flawed, and there should be an easier answer. Or at the very least, publishers need to have better communication with their bands.

I love seeing people experience songs for the first time. Even though it's been done to death, I still like seeing new people from out of the genre react to Ghost Love Score - raw emotion.
Personal opinion: Creatives to Creatives. Creation is an additive function of making things. We make things by taking what we have taken in and outputting something that is derivative of those things. When we make something and put it into the world the world is going to do with it what they choose. Even though our laws do not reflect this we need to start talking in a way that highlights creation as a collaboration directly and indirectly between people we do and don't know.
Tank, I would encourage you and every on in this space to continue speaking about this in the future. Loop it in with reaction videos and other things. I don't know what that looks like but I trust you know what you're doing.

I found my new favorite band from a reaction video, Trivium. It seems to me that it’s mutually beneficial. Just the money I have spent on merch and music,they never would have received if I never saw that reaction video with Alex
I do actually discover new bands through reactors (although I'll almost always go and check out the original video before the reaction), big examples being Nightwish, Sabaton, Blackbriar, Home Free and VoicePlay. _However_ it is not my main reason for watching reactions any more. Mostly I want to see how people react to or analyse stuff I love. So there's a bit of both for me.

I would never have found bands like Lorna Shore or Slaughter to Prevail if it wasn't for your reactions to their music. They are now both, without doubt 2 of my most favourite bands and I've since bought a LOT of their physical music and merch. So yes, reactors will make money from the reactions, but the bands themselves will also make money and gain fans they otherwise might not have had.
If I were a label or artist I'd love reactors reacting to my stuff it puts your work out there ! There are alot of artist I've found through reaction channels
You did such a great job explaining where you're coming from on this subject. I really wish the bands/publishers would follow through & remove the copyrights so they could get more exposure. But I don't blame you one bit for not wanting to invest the time into filming & editing & then sit there twiddling your thumbs waiting on the copyrights to be removed. Much love & respect!
You nailed it, for me anyway. I am here for music discovery AND the reactions from those who are discovering new music (old for me) and I get a sort of satisfaction via reactions by reliving how I felt the 1st time I heard whatever band doing whatever song. I get the "yeah, that's how felt when I heard it my 1st time" and it just rejuvenates good memories and although I do not know these people/reactors personally, I feel like I was there with them sharing a "1st" for a good memory. With the Unsigned...fans (new and old) of a certain flavor could experience just that if musicians would/could remove the collar and be their own master. I still have faith that UA-cam will help change the way music is discovered and controlled, allowing musicians to not only do what they want but, possibly make some good money by cutting out the middle entities....and avoid bad marketing decisions lol.
The best live band I ever saw has never been recorded or seen anywhere except the bar I paid five dollars to go to ! Running from Anna alternative rock band out of South Carolina I think !

It’s sad that there are so many bands/labels that are just destroying the trust of UA-cam creators and stopping any chances of genuine bands getting reaction videos made, that could seriously help their image! I’m in an independent band, and I would LOVE for you to do a reaction to a song of ours, but at the same time I wouldn’t want to put you in a position like those you have described in this video!

Reactions can be Very Good promotion especially for Unknown Bands .. The Household bands Not so much because of Copyright Issues ... When the House hold bands get Reactions then As You rightly Say " The Record company's want the pot filling up "

Interesting discussion, very informative. Just throwing this out there - if indie reax videos are something you like doing, but don’t want to risk a hit to your main channel, what about starting a secondary channel focusing on that topic?

I think you're right, in that many go to see reactors experience something they know for the first time, but the turnaround is also true (At least for me). Once I've gotten to know a reactor and find them sympathetic, much like you for example, it stops being about seeing them react to something I already know and becomes more about watching them just in general. That could be because i share opinions or taste in music with them, any one of a dozen possible reasons.
So as time passes, with many reaction channels, as their audience grows it shifts from watching them discover something you already know, to discovering things through them.
you are correct on something I heard. I go to Your channel and Charismatic Voice channel to see the reactions to bands I love. Rarely do I watch a video from a band I dont know. Except for Orbit Culture. Once I saw the video for Saw, i fell in love with the band.
You're not wrong wanting to do business that covers everyone's collective asses. Dude, I just discovered your channel during the Blue Ridge Rock disaster from other streamers that were actually there while the shitshow was unfolding. That lineup was sick and that could have been one of the best festivals of the decade. That leads me to my next point.... when I wasn't at work, I was watching the fallout from this event from many perspectives. Then I came across your videos of your role in the Electric Callboy camp. I'm now a fan of both you and them. That's true love in music. As I keep checking out your videos, I keep learning about new music that I like, that I probably would have never discovered otherwise with my current situation and lack of playing music, seeing music live, and/or time that I don't really have to seek out for about a half hour of play time. Dude I respect you though and all that you bring to the table. Keep up the good work work dude and I hope to work with you one day.
Bloodywood was one of my first blocked videos and made me a bit gun-shy for sure... I too put my videos on unlisted and try to resolve any issues before I make them public. It's such a tap dance behind the scenes that reactors to that on one is aware of. Thanks Tank!

Makes sense. It’s unfortunate it’s gotten that way because with all this technology, it’s gotten easier to discover new music. But these corporations always find a way to screw it up for the little folks.
I have discovered tons of new bands through reaction videos. I discovered new *genres* through reaction videos that I had no idea would appeal to me before that. Was every video I watched a new discovery? No, obviously not. Once I found something that seemed interesting I would go on to watch more reactions to that band. I doubt a single reaction video would have been enough to convince me to buy the entire discography of a dozen bands along with sizable chunks of another handful, not to mention dvds and virtual concert tickets. So both discovery and watching others discover what I liked is true for me - and both apply to the same bands.
I'm not even a reaction creator, I'm a gaming streamer and I totally feel this. I've got a commissioned theme song from a band I'm friendly with IRL and any time something with my theme, which I have full license to and was commissioned, shows up in anything on UA-cam it gets hit with Copyright on here. The actual lyrics are about me and my content. It's actually put me off doing reactions to things, especially with the instability of Twitch in recent months

BTW Elizabeth have you seen the video talking about you and which reaction channel's make the big bucks! Elizabeth they were saying that you make millions per year. Idk know much do make but I'd wouldn't be surprised if you do make anywhere from 500k to 1M per year. Your channel is so positive and full of fun reactions.
During Covid, I had to figure out what to do with myself. I first stated watching all the news about the virus, but then I needed to remove myself from that sadness so I started watching reactions and I never would have found Electric Callboy.
As far as all the copyright chaos, I really think most record companies are really missing out on creating new fans. The younger members of my family most likely would have never found out about my favorite music-- heavy metal. The reactions have allowed me to text everyone who might be interested in metal. And these texts have led to more viewers and more fans.
I never would have listened to a band like Electric Callboy if I didn't see your video talking about how they were awesome people to tour with. I gave them a chance, and now I'm hooked. Hurrikan has been in my head for weeks.

I think youtube altogether needs to have a re think about how they handle their copyright system. I can see why copyright claims exist as i've seen tonnes of songs over the years, just re uploaded to their youtube channel, when they can just check out the original video above it. That, I can understand. It's certainly something my band will keeping an eye on when we start releasing our music hopefully later this year.
However, when it comes to reactors, they shouldn't really need to go through that whole rigmarole. Like you said, a bands getting publicity thanks to someone who will most likely have more views and subscribers than them. So why should a band feel the need to make money off of someone reacting to them, when it could potentially open them up to even more viewers from said reactors channel.
I just want youtube to get into a position where people re uploading someone else's song should get claimed and reactors don't need to worry.

Some very interesting information here. Thanks for this! Probably 95% of the videos on my channel are copyright claimed and I just thought "well, I guess I can't make money on that once my channel is verfied", but I did not know that this could have other ramifications on my channel as well.
I think it's hard to get copyright claims removed as a small channel so to start I think you still need to get reactions out there no matter if there's a claim on it or not until you grew and are able to build relationships with labels and artists.
Love your channel as there is so much amazing info to be found in your videos. If you ever have the time to check out an internet band with members scattered across the globe and give us feedback (must be a ton of other bands like us out there too) on how to market a band that only exists online that would rule. Keep pumping out those awesome vids. ROCK ON.
I just wish UA-cam had a feature where you can link and sync up videos. So you upload your reaction video with some sort of sync track of where you start and stop a specific video which is linked to your video, and on the client side the YT player plays both videos side by side or picture-in-picture or whatever. That way the viewer can watch/listen along without you having to embed any copyrighted material in your actual video, plus the linked video receives views everytime yours does. Obviously, that has its own problems, like what if the linked video gets removed, or how to deal with ads, or the fact that it would only work for stuff that is on YT. But I still think that would be a useful feature and not too difficult for YT to implement.
The reason why I love reaction video is because it kinda brings me back to the first time I ear a song by watching someone watching it for the first time and bing blown away
I've been thinking of doing reactions to different bands and stuff myself. I am just curious which labels are cool with reactions other than the video of you talking about some labels. I didn't see Napalm and Nuclear Blast in there. I've been loving a lot of Naplam's stuff like Alestorm. Andrew W.K. is in my top 5 artists of all time! Great stuff.
I gotta agree with you Tank! There is no way I discover Landmvrks, Electric Callboy and Slaughter to Prevail with out reaction channels! Oh yeah and those three bands were my top 3 on my Spotify rewind!

My channel use to be a backyard wrestling group... we used whatever music we wanted as entrance music for wrestlers, we didnt have the views, subs, or desire to monetize. Often we just get an ad on the video (alot of banners back then) but occasionally a label would just mute the whole video or yes even block it.... a video that would have only ever got 300 or less views for a 30s entrance, with videos often 30m or more. What sucked most was it was my channel that we converted, so other friends in the group then lost the ability to see those videos too... was nothing but and only ever would be free advertising as we literally couldn't monetize anything even if we wanted due to channel size and had no desire to.
As a currently unsigned artist, I decided to help out other unsigned artists. The very first reaction I did was a song my singer and I wrote. It was MY SONG that had not been released. It was removed because CD Baby claimed copywrite on a song they NEVER had on their servers. I challenged the claim because of these reasons, but UA-cam agreed with them.
My second was "Me Myself and Monster" by SmallTown Titans. I had legal permission from them to use their music. They are their own everything. No label, no manager, nothing. CD Baby claimed it. When I showed permission from the band, they stuck with CD Baby. The third video happened the exact same way and, the fuck nuts at UA-cam deleted my account.

Hey man, love your work. I know I'm a little late to the party, but I wanted to ask what, in your opinion, is the best way to approach a UA-camr, be it yourself or someone else, about getting someone to do a reaction to a music video? Is it as simple as emailing, or is there a better way to do it? I realise everyone is different, but it's always good to have a baseline to start from when approaching these things. The band that I'm in would love to get our videos out to more people (in case you're interested, we're unsigned and unrepresented so hopefully wouldn't have as much of an issue with copyright strikes, two people already have and don't seem to have had an issue).
Would there be any value in a platform that would collect a deposit from the band?
The deposit would be returned to the band if the copywrite was cleared but given to the creator to compensate them for their lost editing time if the band didn't follow through.
It might give the band more incentive to get the video whitelisted. Perhaps bands that had consistently cleared copywrite in the past for other creators could be recognized and eventually trusted without a deposit.
Well for me I honestly didn't know what a reaction video was when I sent my UA-cam link, I'm a bit of a caveman according to the misses. Lol. I didn't know there was an email to send it to. Your a music lover and a metal head, I'm a different genre so I don't know if anything I do would speak to you. I like your channel, you seem like a cool dude, just frustrated a little in this video. I would be too. If my stuff your diggin and you think it has merit, then I'd love to ask you some questions, might help with whatever I haven't thought of, but already I feel I've have found some great knowledge and some interesting Storys from your channel. Often I do laundry or dishes to it. Oh I have an idea on how you can present music of other bands that are copyrighted without presenting there music, and still make an interesting video that would actually be really easy to do. Your the tank man, you can go wherever you want.
was literally just looking up on getting channels to react to your music for our band, (not the channel I'm commenting with) then this popped up. So sad to hear how bands and publishers can mess you around like that. Ruins it for the rest of us. It's great to hear feedback and also, it really helps promote not only the song, but your whole channel and band profile. Maybe you could run contracts so they agree to remove the claim?
This is very illuminating, thanks for taking the time. Is there any way for bands to do this preemptively? My band would love to get reactions from people like yourself, and we would absolutely want to give free reign to _all_ reactors to monetize videos featuring our music.

I could be wrong, but infrequently I see videos labeled free use. The problem with that is I think it makes your stuff easier to use to make money themselves without giving the artist a dime. Or I'm completely wrong, it's been known to happen
Not UA-cam, no, it'd have to be whoever your music publisher is. But there is a way to whitelist stuff for free use, publishers rarely use it.
And for the second comment, there's a big difference in someone tagging their video "free use" and it actually being that way. I've personally done reactions to videos when I've been told it wouldn't get a copyright, and it still does.
@@TankTheTech We upload everything using DistroKid, who only acts as a distributor. I don't even know if we formally even have a publisher in that scenario...
It's interesting/problematic that even as the copyright owner it seems like we have quite little control and the process is very painful.
It really is a shame that some of the distributors do not help the bands to get their stuff featured on UA-cam-Channels. Reactions are a serious marketing tool - especially for us small bands. If you are lucky and you get featured your numbers, reach and therefore fanbase will get boosted, which is good for the band AND for the distributor (at least if they get a share of the revenue). Of course most of the "big fish" of reactors are not reacting at all - what I absolutely understand, since I am sure you get bombed with requests. For all bands out there: Challenge your distributor, we had to do it too, but in the end they will likely remove the claim, when you insist on it. If they do not remove it, you should definitely consider to change to another one. It is YOUR music and YOU should be the one who is managing what happens with it. Why work with a distributor that is going to hinder your progress?
If the distributor is going to own the copyright to your stuff, why not just sign to an indie label that is pro-artist? It seems like the biggest benefit to not being in a label would be that the band owns the copyright to their music.

@@nobodyimportant7804 A lot of bands have no experience in dealing with a distributor. Even if a distributor does not own your copyright they mostly do take care of your copyrights. So, if a reactor/reviewer uploads your stuff, there will be a copyright claim in your name. That's basically the point of Tanks video. And the problem starts here. Of course the distributor can remove the claim, but many do not have a good customer service team, so they will not react on your requests. "Why work with a distributor that is going to hinder your progress?" > basically, it is difficult to know before choosing a service.

@@nobodyimportant7804 A distributor, distributes, and manages royalties. You can generally opt-out of them filing copyright claims in your name though. The two big players these days are DistroKid and CDBaby. I distribute to streaming platforms with CDBaby, but I specifically checked the box that says "do not enforce copyright for me on UA-cam".
So, you generally have reasonable control, but new bands who haven't thought it through are likely to just say "yeah, do it all for me". Then it's a pain to un-do.
Can't argue with anything you said. Fair points all round. And it's sad to hear that publishers often ignore unsigned bands and how youtube does their copyrights.
Side note, you heard of Blindspott from nz? If not, check them out. S.U.I.T, Mind Dependancy, Nil By Mouth are some great songs. Hope they won't get copyrighted, or if they get flagged, they get removed asap

You are right, this isnt only about the money. Its more about keeping your channel save.
I am part of the 10% who try to find new music by watching reactions. I just recently found the german metalcore band Chiffre by watching a reaction and the checked out their album, now its running on a loop because they are so amazing. Same with Bad Omens, I found them by watching a reaction on their song Concrete Jungle, next month I am going to their concert.
I find new bands through reactors and Liquid Metal and often send stuff to Melissa so Jose can check it out. Keep up the work 🍺
During covid i think i bought between 20 and 25 albums by bands i would never have found if it wasn't for reaction videos, Bloodywood, UTA, Electric Callboy, Powerwolf, Nanowar of Steel and so forth to name a few.
Having reactions to songs is only good imho, it's a very good way for people to find out about new bands, about new genres or just undiscovered bands that already have a very hard time getting some light in the ever growing pool of music. As a independent band we're more than happy when we receive a notification someone did a reaction. Does it suck some people upload your full album to youtube? Sure, but it can also mean someone new discovers your music and goes to your social media pages and outright buys the album or goes to spotify to stream your album.
I would be curious to know if our music is going to be copyright claimed because we have no label or distributor.
UA-cam has done this to Weird Al on more than one occasion and he has said he gets really annoyed having to waste his time fixing things since he owns all his music.
It is so stupid that copyright on YT seems to be all or nothing.
When my music is used on TV it doesn’t void anyone else’s royalty on the same show/ad.
YT have been complete bastards about royalties from the moment they went public and allowed published content on the platform.

Maybe, just maybe, if an independent Band comes to you and asks for a reaction Video, make a contract with them, where, if they dont remove the Copyright Claims, they have to pay compensation for your Work. X amount per hour.
Still this doesnt guarante that they going to remove the Copyright Claim, but at least you could take legal action against them...if you wanted to..if it was worth it aso. Its complicated, i totally feel you.
I've done some music compilation videos from unknown indie metal bands and around half of them wouldn't even have a copyright claim to begin with. Maybe that has changed, but a good way going about this would be to just upload the plain song to youtube and see whether there is a claim. I was highly surprised how many bands wouldn't have copyright claims alltogether.
We had only a few reactors come back to us, after we send out our stuff. We are actually signed to a small label and our publisher would do anything if we asked them... but up until this video I honestly never heard about this issue. Now I feel really sorry for the few reactors who actually reacted to our stuff and probably got copyright claims. Are you sure the publishers are the ones who have to clear it and not the distribution companies? Because with distributors it is absolutely nearly impossible to get anything done as an independent band or a small label, we had so many issues, problems, just plain errors they did not correct...
Distributors/Publishers are synonymous when it comes to copyright claims on UA-cam, and they're the ones that have 100% of the power when it comes to deciding what gets blocked, claimed, and who gets striked.
For example, earlier today I got my first ever copyright strike from BMG for a Spiritbox video. The band and their label have gotten my claims cleared in the past, and the band has even tweeted about my videos before. They nor their label didn't even know what was going; someone at their publisher/distributor just placed a strike on it because, well, that's what they do, and they barely ever take the time to review videos before they do it. The label had them drop it immediately when they found out. So sometimes, unless the band and label is even made aware of the situation, they don't even know how their publisher/distributor is handling their claims on UA-cam.
@@TankTheTech ah, thanks for the clear-up. For me publisher is something different from a distributor. My music is published through 777songs/Schubert Music, our label is called Bleeding Nose Records and Bleeding Nose Records distributes through Believe, the parent company of Nuclear Blast. Three very different companies who differ drastically in size and how personal the connections are with their bands/artists.
We never make money on reactions unless the bands music is not claimed but if the band claims the music then we never dispute it. We balance our channel with large bands that are not reacted to and unsigned bands. Our primary goal is to focus on interviews but reactions fill in the gaps when we have no interview content.
Just to be clear, the BAND is not claiming the video. The publisher is.
Ok just recently I've heard a very similar discussion on Twitch from a reactor you know, and he too cited Bloodywood as an example. And he too loves Bloodywood, hell he knows Bloodywood, and he too said sometimes the publishers just won't. And I totally get it. The algorithm is so messed up you just can't risk your channels health or even existence (Yeah I know a reactor that had his channel suspended, temporarily, on the exact day he got his 100k plaque. He got the channel back, but it took 6 weeks and he had to start a backup channel that didn't have the views because he was almost completely starting from scratch, except for the people that got the memo, and actually went there. In other words it cost him) And I totally get the burnout factor and spending time in this that you could spend on personal things. And it's not about the money, it's negligible. Part of the blame is on the publishers who are inflexible much of the time, and on YT who's almost never flexible. As much as I'm committed to up and coming bands I totally get it. If I may offer an opinion though, YT became big because it was a very open platform and I've seen it become more and more closed because they want to keep everyone happy. Companies, interest groups, this opinion and that opinion. And they're failing miserably. Nobody is happy except those people who are prevailing in what they want, and that's temporary. That's my opinion as a YT viewer and no one's else to be clear.
I put my hand up as one of the people who only really watch reactions of music I already have heard or am generally aware of and haven't heard in awhile. I fell down the Avenged Sevenfold reaction video rabbit hole recently. It's how I landed here on this channel, actually. Generally, I'm pretty busy during weekdays and don't watch many reaction videos on the weekend. Some of that is responsible for why I don't watch/listen to new music, even if it is up my alley. I could definitely do a better job of it, but I'm the kind of music listener who can listen to the same band over and over for hours on end. I do this at work. I have watched a few different channels style when it comes to reaction videos and I find the ones that are most valuable to me (because I find learning interesting even if I never actually do it the thing I'm learning about) are the channels that help then viewer understand the music making process. The only other real style is the "whooooaaaa that was awesome dudeeee!" approach that doesn't really help anyone outside of maybe getting ears on something that wasn't previously heard. The way the publisher conundrum reads in my mind (from watching this video and exploring some of the comments) as a power of attorney situation. One can control every element of ownership of something, but in order to make the cogs of mass distribution work bands have to give power of attorney over to distribution companies to ensure it happens. It's just fascinating that one can do everything right and still hit the brick wall if they don't choose the right partner.

Would it be a posibility to get a indie band to have their publisher contact you directly before shooting a reaction that they ask you to, so there is less chance of band wanting but publisher not caring?

Surprisingly, no, at least not directly. That's not to say they don't peruse reactor's channels to see if there are any new bands popping up on there.
Hey tank it's a shame that with copyright issues and how some bands act or people in the labels and stuff, as someone who is in local bands in the UK and would love if people could do reacts cause it helps as a band , but I fully understand how you don't want to do more with the stress and that what is a shame for everyone but as someone who also puts on gigs somtimes as well and know how unreliable bands and labels ect can and how much stress it can cause , hope one day you might feel differently again cause bands should work with reactors help promote new unheard music into the main stream lives , hope your well mate keep up the content mate 🤘
Ahhhh... What's bad is I reached out to Bloodywood ( love the band 100% ) about a month ago to do a deep dive into their musical sound by requesting copies of the master stems.... Well if I never hear back.. I know why :(
Most of the time I've already discovered the musicians in the reaction video. However I've also discovered new music I've never heard of. No way I would have heard about Eskimo (electric) Callboy without reactions. Yaal are the new music journalists 👾
i really wish all labels and publishers, and some bands, would realise what times we live in. 20 years ago we used to discover new music via our circle of friends, radio, magazines, MTV. but that's not the case anymore. my friends mention new bands they find via reactions, tiktok, etc, i only listen to mainstream radio when i clean or cook as a background noise now and i can't remember when was the last time i read a magazine, even online version (i just shuffle trough headlines now). i'm not even sure if MTV still sexists.
i discover all new things via youtube, mostly via reactors whose tastes align with mine (watch a reaction video to something, youtube suggests more things like that, watch them have more suggested and so on). labels/publishers should be thankful instead of apprehensive. let's look at some of the bands which blew up in last couple of years like spiritbox, electric callboy, bad omens, lorna shore (sleep token currently). they've always had talent to back up their success but it's thanks to modern media that they had surges in popularity. it's FREE marketing and publicity and yet it's being refused because some people cling to the "old times" which will never be back.
I do watch your stuff to find new bands. If it wasn't for you I would have never heard of electric callboy now one of my favorite bands.
We have almost 400 videos and maybe 10 are monetized. I genuinely enjoy hearing new music and sharing it, but if people think this is a get rich scheme, they are badly mistaken. This is a love project. And if it makes some side cash, awesome. But record companies make a killing on reactors.

I see basically the same 5 bands on all, k not all but a lot of em, reaction channels. Their are some that do more variation in bands, styles of music, eras of music but imo I'm just seeing the same on multiple channels. Just an opinion from an old guy that has a lot of time to watch/listen bands and various channels. Ty much for what you do here.

I’d drop copyright for reaction videos anytime. To me I look at it as marketing and the more we are out there the better it is for us on tour. We drop copyright all the time if we know the potential for reach.

If you just remove the tick when uploading to an aggregator like distrokid from "youtube content id" wouldn't that just clear all CR claims on yt?
Or do you have to release every single reaction video in yt studio or somewhere anyways?
