      @@TankTheTech That's cool.
      I understand that some things are a little vague right now, but it's not because we're being dishonest, quite the opposite. Some things can only be quantified once we are live and have user data (hence things like "2-3 times" or "up to 10%"). But we'll try to be clearer about all of this before we go live. If you have anything specific...just shoot. I'm always here to answer.

      one opinion though... kinda a hot take, dont bring in other genres, not to be an ass or anything, it's more about branding, which in the long term would help ROKK stand out. i mean sure it wont get too much traffic at the start due to that, but you wont be called out as a Spotify copycat neither, and that also guarantees that more money goes to the Rock and Metal artists.@@Landenburg

      Some Feedback:
      1. For this to be in any way relevant for me it's absolutely necessary, that i can switch the artists i support. I get that it makes sense with your marketing strategy to not be able to switch it to further incentivise artists to push you. That said, this feature is IMO the main draw for your platform. Not being able to switch my supported artists would render that feature mostly useless for me and be a dealbreaker.
      2. As Tank said, many things would have to be way more specific. I get why you wouldn't wanna do that from a business perspective, but if you brand yourself on paying better i need more than "could" and "up to".
      3. Are these options even for the artists i'd like to support. As Tank said, the website makes it sound like the support options are exclusive for Rock/Metal Artists. But how is that decides. I certainly would consider pretty much all the artists i listen to a lot as Rock artists, but a lot of old school Rock/Metal fans certainly wouldn't. While my current choices probably would be fine (RedHook and Stand Atlantic), but i also like artists like phem, LØLØ or Maggie Lindemann a lot and might want to support them at some point.
      4. The main reason i came to spotify from yt is that most of my friends use it and i often curate playlists for/with them and it was always a hassle to copy them from yt to spotify so i switched over. That means for me to switch platforms my friends would have to be down to switch, too. While i'm very certain all of them would be down to support artists more and directly, some of them aren't that much into Rock/Metal and probably would like to support EDM artists or local indie rappers/singer songwriters. This ties back into my last point.
      Those things were the first things that came to my mind. Despite how critical i am here, i really think this is a really cool Idea you guys have and i hope it works out. And it's understandable if you aren't certain about some of these things/wanna start out with a smaller community to iron out the kinks and then open it up for all kinds of artists later. I will certainly keep an eye on how you guys are doing, however i don't think switching will ever be an option for me, as long as those points aren't addressed.

      please take my humble tips from a guy who watched thousands of dragons' den and shark tank - Nr 1: u need money to make money, relying on good word will never work unless u have a ton of luck. there's a reason promotion costs millions. it's the only way u let people know u exist without having big connections. Nr 2: signing up won't work, people prefer services without additional charges. we pay for devices, internet and we're forced to watch adds and share our data to companies by other companies. that's more than enough. people have the options now like the super thanks or paypal to donate directly without pressure as a one off when they think the artist really deserves to be payed for their effor and talent, on top of atrist getting payed from promoting other businesses on their channels. 3. focusing on rock won't work, most people are eclectic, especially today .4. video is a big part of music. some bands rely on visuals. just music isn't enough.

    I work at a big music app but I can't say which one, to preserve my job.
    I believe I have good knowledge on the subject and I would like to share it, we all have our opinions and i respect, but I'm going to talk about something more technical.
    Firstly, what makes a service successful is the number of users, the audience, and this is something that we metal and rock fans in general have already lost out on, we are not the biggest audience in the world (unfortunately) and the streaming companies take this into account.
    Furthermore, another thing that makes a product work is accessibility, both in terms of monetary value and user experience, for example, and as much as it is cool to have infinite features for users who are already part of a community, the fact that it is niche and "exclusive" for metalheads and rockers WILL make the price higher than average.
    You already said well about lossless quality, almost no one even has a headset at home capable of playing a recording directly from a DAW with all the quality it provides, it's not a selling point.
    And as much as I support it a lot, especially as a musician, the fact that a company pays more to the artist is not what will make a platform boom, as I said it is useless for the average user.
    There's no point in selling something to a niche audience and expecting it to be 100% successful, you are literally depending on an audience (which is honestly not the most united and friendly) for your success.
    I love the idea, as someone who enjoys metal, but putting myself in the shoes of an average customer it doesn't make any sense, and that's where the biggest audience is and where companies that tried to dethrone Spotify even though they sometimes offer better quality or by paying better, the artists failed miserably, because in the end the interface counts, the payment methods count, the customer service counts, the way to register your account (social networks, telephone number), in the end what matters least are the sales point of this new platform.
    It's not well-made playlists or a metal encyclopedia that will make a service take off well, at the end of the day you'll listen to your gym playlist to work out or a playlist with chill songs to go to sleep, and although I say this is also the big mass of average users who listen to ready-made playlists, niche audiences like metal and rock rarely go after public playlists.

      @crypnoss19 I have quite a few lengthy Playlist with one of the shorter lists being 12 hours that I listen to at work. At first I'd just play the list in order, but started automatically remembering what was next on the list. So to change it up I put it in shuffle. Spotify would play the same song 4 times within 3 hours (with multiple songs) defeating the whole purpose of having a Playlist.

    I personally think it would be a better solution to have something like the subscriber feature on twitch. That way you could always choose the artist you want to support the most with a free "support" for everyone who pays for a monthly deal, wich you then could also change every month if your favourite artist changes and you'd have the option to also buy more monthly "supports" if you want to support multiple artists with more than just listening.
    That said, I hope that this goes somewhere. Even if it should become some kind of indie platform for starting bands and artists that would be a nice addition to the music industry.

    Unfortunately I can't consider them as an alternative currently. Tidal offers plans adjusted to my currency, which is 30 PLN per month for a family plan vs no local pricing on Rokk so I'd be paying 60 PLN a month, and I can't afford to pay twice the price right now. Hope they stick to their guns and maybe put pressure on the competition to do better, but paying euro prices while not being paid in euros isn't a viable option for me sadly.

    The problem with all of the streaming services is that we really have zero idea how much our music was truly played and listened to. They can fudge numbers all day and night. But this still sounds way more interesting to me than spotify at this point! And if the artists believe in it and love it they can push it to be huge!

    • @CynicalEntity
      @CynicalEntity 5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, streaming platforms consider 30 seconds of streaming a "play" lol. So if I listen to artist A, who has an 80 minute long album with 9 songs, that artist gets 9 plays. If I listen to an album by artist B that is 30 minutes with 10 songs, that artist gets 10 plays. So artist B gets 1 more stream than artist A, even though I spent 50 more minutes listening to artist A. Tidal shows me my top artists for the month and it is by this metric rather than by total play time. I emailed them about this a while back for confirmation. They don't care about accurate user statistics, they care about inflating streaming figures.

  • @thunder_strike
    @thunder_strike 5 місяців тому +8

    I dont work for ROKK, but I think I can answer the question about streaming revenue. The way spotify works, all of the money allocated to payouts goes in a pool. Then spotify divides the pool by the total number of streams on the whole platform to get the dollars per stream figure. Each artist gets paid based on that figure for how many streams theyve got. Right now, that number is around $0.003. That means in order for the artists you listen to to get paid the amount that you spend on your spotify premium, you would have to listen to 4330 songs. The result is some hyper massive artists are getting paid money from the subscriptions of people who dont even listen to them. It sounds like the way Rokk works is that the artists you listen to will get paid directly from your subscription based in how much YOU listen.

    • @CynicalEntity
      @CynicalEntity 5 місяців тому

      Likely a singular artist, who is deemed your top artist of the month, will get a portion of your sub fee. Tidal used to do this and then ditched it this year.

    I think a lot of artists miss the fact of the smaller services than Spotify, it's not just about the amount of listeners, it's also the amount of other artists the algorithm has you pitted against for listens.
    The smaller services are much more viable on getting seen and heard when trying to build your fan base. Wait until you have that well established before wasting your time with Spotify or iTunes.

    • @guidokreeuseler9566
      @guidokreeuseler9566 5 місяців тому

      While it may be (in isolation) statistically true that smaller streaming services are better for the visibility of smaller artists, I can't agree that having your music on spotify or itunes is a waste of time. I mean, how much time does it actually take to tick a box in your aggregator's distribution options?
      Fact of the matter is, that when you promote your music on social media and at live shows and to your IRL social circle, a majority of them will already be using spotify or itunes and it is no extra effort for you to put your music on those most widely used platforms.
      Sure, you can promote your TiDal and Bandcamp links more than your spotify, but invariably people will ask you about spotify a 100 times more than the other way around.
      You don't need to do anything else with the big 2 but tick a box for your upload. So even if your audience skews towards other streaming services, others can still find you on spotify and Itunes and on the backend it becomes one aggregate sum anyway.

    We should push for any and more streaming services. I hope Rokk works out whether or not they don't compete with Spotify. The problem that usually happens though, is that the market works together to keep pricing similar to one another instead of pushing the benefit of working with said service. So while right now they are looking to pay artists more, I fear they will fall back to the level of Spotify in paying the artists, or they will hide certain costs to artists to come out to the same level.

  • @guidokreeuseler9566

    Good point out of the artist support scheme there! I think it is a bit iffy that it's build on sign-ups through an affiliate link, rather than what Tidal used to have where you selected a couple of artists to get a part of your subscription payment.
    Maybe it is so just for the start-up period and they'll change or add other ways later? can't count on that.
    By this, it is basically the affiliated artists recruiting customers to the platform and there is a problem with that. If it's mostly independent bands begging their friends to switch to this new streaming service, how well will that go? How well can it work out?
    Additionally, there is already a bunch of other (unrelated) brands and products with the brandname ROKK, that may become a problem too, it already IS a problem when trying to do some online research on this project!

    Hifi audio is a huge selling point for me. It's why I go to Tidal over Spotify. But I don't know a ton about Opus and haven't heard files in that format. Even if it's hifi on paper, the source files they use to stream are just as important. Are we getting true CD quality or higher recordings streamed in Opus? UA-cam Music also uses Opus and they have a lot of poorly mastered or recorded songs so I wouldn't call them hifi.
    But I love the idea of curated things like playlists by people who know the genre and the encyclopedia thing. Reminds me a bit of what Qobuz does with their editorials and features to highlight band and label info. But Qobuz was lacking a lot of what I wanted to listen to. So I hope this service will have everything I want to listen to - especially on release day.

    I'll give it a try when it comes out, but the main reason why I stick with Spotify is that they always seem to have more music available. I tried out Tidal and Napster (formerly Rhapsody) last year and they would have weird gaps in a band's discography, or some of the obscure bands I listen to wouldn't be on there. On Tidal, I remember Neurosis' Souls At Zero had half the tracks unavailable for some weird reason.

    The most important thing to me that most of Spotify's competitors are missing is equal UI options/abilities in regard to playlist management, including a search function within playlists, and playlist limits less than 10,000. If Rokk can match feature parity in this regard and beat Spotify's 10,000 song playlist limit they'll have my interest. Also if they're different means of importing playlists is noticeably better than most options that would go a long way in impressing me as well.
    I think they need to drop the rock and metal focused marketing. I'd be willing to bet a majority of people hear that up front and immediately assume that's all they cater to even if they say otherwise in the following sentence. If you want to gain a foothold and genuinely compete in an industry that has a giant like Spotify in it you need to make your marketing simple and as stupid proof as possible.

    If this really dose pay artist better then I hope it succeeds. But I'm highly sceptical that any music streaming service can compete with Spotify & Apple (unless it's bundled with another service like UA-cam or Amazon).
    The only way I can see a chance of any company being able to compete with Spotify or Apple is if they do atleast 3 things. 1 pay the artist more. 2 have exclusive releases (even if it's a soundboard recording from a live show or demos). 3 include the bonus tracks.
    I've noticed that many albums on Spotify are missing the UK, Japanese & hidden tracks. For me personally that's 1 of the big reasons I don't use Spotify. But if they had exclusive albums I'd atleast open the app and pay for it every month to hear those exclusive albums anytime I wanted.

    As long as you have the option to switch your "favourite" band, I like this. The artists have their own interest in marketing this and they will get paid if they succeed. Gonna be tough if known as primarily rock/metal platform. On top of that, die-hard fans already have Patreon and PayPal to offer support at more than 10%, so that part of Rokk's value prop is uncertain too.

    As a fan of UA-cam cover bands, which get their songs onto UA-cam Music directly if they do the right thing, I sadly won't change music streaming platforms. Plus any streaming service charging more than UA-cam Musics 9,99€/month, is making it less likely that I'll jump over to them. It might just be 1 euro a month and make you need only 1 platform for all music, unlike the movie/series streaming services, but that 1 euro is going to stack up eventually.

    The “direct dollar” should always be going to the five bands that you listen to the most in a month. That would be a true alternative to Spotify’s "pay-per-stream-system" and a way to really support independent bands and help them make a living from streaming.
    That’s what annoys me the most about Spotify, it’s that all my subscription money gets funnelled towards Taylor Swift and Drake even though I never listen to a single one of their songs. I wouldn’t even recognise them if they walked right past me on the streets and still I have to chip into their income.

    this sounds great and not difficult to work out their goals. Of course they’ve got to have all music on there, even the most diehard metal head can have a kid that wants Taylor Swift playing on the school run. The difference with this service is that Swift will get the flat rate rather than the higher rates she’d normally get, while the metal band’s will get more. The 10% thing is great, just a few hundred quid a month coming in to a band with a small local following can make a huge difference, even if it just pays for rehearsals or fuel to gigs, it could be a big help. Another thing I'm thinking about; people are rarely a fan of just the one band and maybe want to see more money go to multiple bands. Say you sign up with a link from band X, but also really like band Y and Z. Only band X gets the extra money from the subscription fee, but the other two don't. Depending on how much they can make through streaming you're kinda left to pick favourites as a fan.
    Also, suppose someone signs up without the affiliate link, but they'd like to give a band they love a little extra support. Are they able to do that then?

      The Direct Artist Support is locked with a band for 1 year. After that, it will be possible to reassign it to another act (or charity), probably once every three months.
      We would like to add something like a "donate" button on top that goes directly to the artists.
      But anything we do that has to do with finances, we have to discuss with the labels first. Otherwise we run the risk that any extra payment will just go into the general royalty pot. Which wouldn't be a bad thing per se, but it's not what Fan wants to do with the money.

    My biggest beef with this: That whole "pool" argument they're complaining about with bigger streaming services will also apply to Rokk.
    That's just how a business works. You pay your streaming service $10 a month, your streaming generates (let's be generous here) and $5 of revenue to the artists. It doesn't go directly from your bank account to the band's bank account. It goes in to Rokk's account and then gets paid out to the artist by what they deserve. So yes, you can tell yourself "I paid my favourite artists a total of $5" but that same logic works for Spotify, Apple, Tidal, etc.
    This is really just cashing in on "FUCK SPOTIFY" sentiment and will work for a while but is doomed to (at best) to stay a float.

    • @JanneBernards
      @JanneBernards 5 місяців тому

      Spotify distributes based to the total number of listens on the entire platform. They don't just pool all the money, they pool all the streams. If an artist is resposinble for 1% of the total streams on the platform they get 1% of the total pool of money. If my favorite band gets 0.00000000001% of the streams on the platform they get 0.00000000001% of the money. This means that smaller artists get barely anything.
      Deezer, for example, doesn't pool all the streams. They take the streams of each account individually and then pay artists a % of that account's subscription money. So if my favorite artists takes up 20% of the streaming time on my account, they get 20% of the money from my subscription (obviously, just the portion that's set aside to go towards artists.) For smaller artists who have several hundreds or even thousands of dedicated fans who listen to them a lot this makes quite a bit of difference.

Also….where are they gonna get the money to license all that music? A good price would be the same as the Netflix one. Pro and family version would be an euro more imo.

    The only way they could pay out more to bands is if they make more money per user / per listen.
    You can not pay money you dont have. And seeing the indigogo numbers theres not much going around for a project this big.
    So either the paid access will still have ads (which will doom it instantly).
    If we remove "mainstream" completely the platform has such a small appeal that it wont be sustainable. Servers etc cost money.
    And having the mainstream still available will cost more than all the rock/metal payouts together, or theyll lose huge mainstream names.
