letting go of spender friends that always want to go out, buy expensive items, and keep peer pressuring you to do the same with the "you deserve mentality" and don't support your frugal living. You become who you surround yourself with. - that's the biggest "item" I don't spend money nor my time lol

I cant agree with you less.. don’t give your time to those who can’t appreciate .. it’s scary to lot of ppl.. but it’s nothing I don’t miss .. I just. Do things on my own at my own paste

@@zeesworld3371 This. I just told my husband why I can't be with one of my "best" friends anymore, because I have realized how everytime we meet up she just talks about all the things she wants US to do and say I am boring and that I also deserve to have fun and so on, maybe not with those words. She can never just be calm and happy for the moment we share, and the coffee and "fika" like we have here in Sweden, for me that is a luxury it self, but for her it is regular everyday.
Just to make time to see each other is hard these days so I just want to be in the moment when we do, but she is always back in the before or in the future, never present.
She wonders if I am mad at her or if she has done anything wrong. How can I talk to her about this, or should we just let it die after about 15 years? Our kids love each other, so I mostly meet up because of them, but for me it is enough to just play, but she always wants to spend.
I remember too many times we have been somewhere and she ALWAYS buys a lot to her only child, and then ofc our children also want whatever it is (sodas, ice cream, toys) but sometimes we really didn't have that money and weren't meaning to spend on anything, I always pack our foods and often sometime have been to give her child because she "forgot", or just thought to buy it out.
We live completely different lifestyles, and when she is child free she always wants to party, but for me a quiet night with a movie sounds great.
I am trying so hard to let it go, because I always feel broke after I meet her. And she is very afraid of her money (she thinks), like stingy, she can spend alot on herself and her child but is counting every cent when it comes to "friends", and I have always been: "what goes around, comes around", sometimes it feels so she has used it, maybe not conscious.
Sorry for the rant but this is my life's mess right now.

Funny how frugal became cool over the last year. We had been living frugal right along, avoiding the excessive spending eating out, we have an antenna and Amazon Prime, no cable tv, just internet. I do my own nails, wear very little makeup and do not own a dozen pairs of shoes. I switched to bar soap for the shower and have the shampoo and conditioner bars as well. They definitely last longer and have no harsh chemicals in them. I don’t use hair spray, but do use oils on my ends. I do not go to the salon, my husband cuts my hair for me, he gives my teen boys their haircuts every three weeks and I get mine trimmed every couple months. He does a great job, my mom and best friend have him cut their hair, they like his work and getting free haircuts. We have a garden for fresh fruits and vegetables, plus we can and freeze. We do all our own yard work and snow removal. We insource wherever we can.

I figured out the tomato paste, spices, veg, rice or pasta, beans or chicken makes at least 8 servings. Cost: 60 cents to one dollar per serving.
Freezer meals cost anywhere from 2 to 6 dollars a serving from the store and none of them taste good.

I have a Keurig and the refillable pod. I sometimes buy coffee from a local bean roaster and have them grind it for my machine. It actually works out to be cheaper and tastier to do that than to buy K cups. And I like to support local businesses. So I get the benefit of not being as wasteful and helping the local economy.

Dry cleaning stopped when I retired in 2006. I do iron sometimes. I like fresh creases in pant legs and my one skirt needs ironing sometimes also. I gave away suits, dresses, high heels, corporate outfits. Gave to a friend all evening clothes, evening handbags, evening dressy shoes. It’s no longer my lifestyle.
I am reading the Joshua Becker books on minimalism. He pleads an interesting case. Last year I started downsizing seriously. We are in this house 20 years. I’m looking fir mire space. Must get rid of it more to locate the space. Donated furniture, kitchen items, much of my and my husband’s closets. This starts Year 2 of more downsizing.
Your tips are wonderful! I’m getting away mire from being a consumer. You are inspiring!

Here in Colorado we just had 3 blizzards last week. Today is Jan 25, 2023. More snow today. I make good use of my time to shred old paperwork, sorting out a closet again today, and packing up items ti donate in February. I have a truck pickup service which I will arrange to come monthly fir donations. The point by scheduling first is I MUST have the bags/boxes on my porch by pickup date. That puts pressure ion ne ti get this completed!

I got rid of almost all my dry cleanable clothing in the middle of the pandemic. I just took two dresses to the cleaners last week - two dresses - and it was $38. Way too much for dry cleaning. It costs more to maintain them than it was to purchase them. So I agree, machine washable only from here on out.

  • @RachelLWolfe

So I've been kinda binge watching your budgeting videos, and though this one is 9 months old, I still found it interesting, and helpful. I stopped getting my nails done when the salons closed at the beginning of the pandemic, and it was an instant savings of about $70 per month. I do still do my nails but I do them at home, and have saved hundreds. I'm currently having to rebuild my savings account, after some major car repairs depleted it. It was such a depressing thing. I was/am glad I had the funds on hand to fix my car (*it's paid off), but it literally took nearly all I had. It is a scary thing to no longer have that safety net, so your videos have been helpful and encouraging.

Dear Kate, I have never been in a position to live excesively, so, I don't miss what I haven't had. My whole life has pretty much followed along with the advise given in this video. I used to be called "cheap" by those who thought I was depriving myself; it's nice to know that this life style has become a popular norm. Now I'm getting ready to retire and will have to be even more creative. I'm not fortunate enough to have a large retirement fund or pension, but, I know I can be happy living simply. Thanks for what you do!

Fancy wrapping for presents. (I use wrapping I get a second time and use pretty prints from a calendar or just plain brownish paper you get inside parcels and fancy that up with creative material etc.)
No hair conditioner. Rather rinse my hair after shampooing (do you know Aleppo-soap? All natural and doesn’t give you a allergic reaction which might be the case if you are all red in your face after taking a shower) with vinegar diluted with water. Makes the hair shiny.
I don’t buy spice -mixtures or spiced salt or soups and sauces in a package.

Hey Kate, Here are couple ideas. First, I do not buy closeout specials, because they are cheap. Only buy closeouts and Black Friday sales when you need something NOW or in the next few months. Two, shop at Goodwill or thrift stores or estate sales. Most of the time I only buy things I will use in the next two weeks. An exception was a $25 extension ladder. It was a good ladder and price was so low. I use it 3-4 times a year. Also, things like weed and feed or Roundup, can be found for a couple dollars at estate sales. So buy it and use in the spring. Garden supplies and tools are a general exception to my two week rule.

Dry-Clean-Only has never been in my vocabulary. Once a boyfriend gave me a steam iron for Christmas. I rewrapped it the next day and gifted it to my mother. Needless to say, ironing also isn't in my vocabulary. T-shirts and jeans never go out of style. When I moved I left 5,000 books behind. Now I get 97.5% of my reading material from my local library. I've read 2,430 books since I retired in 2012. I've purchased only about 60 of them mostly used and at bargain prices.

I have probably eliminated every item on your list.... except one.....
When I became an empty nester, I moved to a senior apartment, I have a small income, so frugal is a way of life. Cable comes with my lease, ironically, I rarely even watch tv. But getting to that one thing..... when I was in my house, it was cutting grass,.I hated doing it.
When I was raising four kids, one with a disability as a single mom and working full time, I think I would have given up anything including eating! If it meant paying someone else to cut the grass. The key is to find someone who would do it cheaply, not a big company that charges a fortune.
I am so grateful that living in my apartment, grounds are maintained, and all I have to do is enjoy.
This is the first time I’ve seen your video, really enjoyed it.

As an Assistant Librarian, books are just ONE of the many things Libraries can provide. Videos, Take-N-Make crafts for children, summer reading programs that you can win prizes, classes like flower making, corsage making, wreath making for all ages, high school kids with their parent or a separate class for mom (or dad), sewing classes. Some Libraries I know had drones for the kids to play with. They have "play dates" for high schoolers that are home schooled so they can interact with each other where snacks, drinks and video games and board games and a craft was offered like painting T-Shirts. The same thing was offered to public school students on a different day so they too could be involved with their classmates and others from different public schools. They have book clubs for teens with a teen librarian where pizza and drink are offered. They have an adult book club with snacks, water, and coffee. All of this is free and materials provided. Sometimes a small donation is asked, BUT if you cannot afford it, talk to the creator of that class and any donation is waived and no one is the wiser. Things have changed since Covid, BUT things are slowly coming back. Your public Library is not the old "sshh" public Library. Their services have changed with the times and it is almost like a Community Center geared to help the youth, the underprivileged, working mothers and single mothers by giving their children (really ALL children. We ask no questions. We just see whom it helps) an outlet that they would not normally have because of cost. I know this is long, but people must utilize these services or they will be taken away because your city may think you don't want or need them.

It is expensive, but it sure saves me from buying a lot of glasses that also are expensive and forgetting them and having them broke, that have happened, that is what make me do it and it feels so good.
Sunglasses I still need though, and I wouldn't imagine expensive ones 😱

I have, in recent years, limited to candle/bodywash/sprays hauls to a BIG haul from B+BW once or tice a year, when they have the HUGE clearance sale with deep discounts. I like to make my purchase using a gift card to that store that I bought at my local grocery store when it was 10% off. I use my credit card that gives me 2% back at the gorcery store when I buy the gift cards. So, I will splurge, but it's intentional and I get pay rock bottom prices and stock up for 6 months or a year.

Save ALL that $ for future home repairs.
Today I had people out to help me wash my house siding, windows & to clean out my gutters. I’m getting too old to be climbing up & down a ladder to get all of that.
Since they’ve come, I’m thinking how water affected my insulation under the siding, the window they broke & the toilet I found, leaks since I had to fill the tank for their use. Normally I keep the tank completely drained to save having to replace the flush arm inside.
It’s been a day around here.
But I do have to be thankful to frugality & access to Dave Ramsey.

@@KateKaden I have more money since being Debt free! Jerkys sister passed, but Jerky is 8 and my Pub friend says that her Cat made it to 22 so not to fret about how long Jerky has. I was given a new therapist for 6 weeks. Since things are warmer, my neighbrs and I have been hanging out more. Im done with DoorDash, they left my Cousins Sub at City hall instead of my house. "News Of The World" has been my fav movie of 2021 so far, but waiting impatiently for James Bond: Now Time To Die, and Discovery Plus has been my new fav streaming service, sorry that was a lot.

I never buy bath and body lotion these days. I buy unscented lotion at w-mart and the essential oils I love and put in several drops and mix thoroughly.

One thing I do is use 1/4 cup detergent, the kind I like, Gain Liquid, and 1/4 cup Baking Soda. It stretches your Liquid Detergent.

I don't buy anything blingy. The sparkly, shimmery, beautiful, unique, absolutely to die for anything. Instead I take a photo. And I look at the beautiful thing all I want for free. This is especially handy when you travel😍🌼✴️✨
