Once the money for the budget has been moved to the bill account, I take the remaining money and divide it by 14 days, I get paid no-weekly, that tells me how much I have per day to spend. Right now it’s about $15/day. When I see it broken down that way it makes me not want to spend. Instead I have bee challenging myself to see how many days of $15 can I save, and every so many days I move to savings what I did not spend. I just started this new process and it’s been fun because it’s a new challenge and a new way of looking at how I spend my money. Kate, I look forward to frugal Fridays with you. Your tips are so practical and beneficial. I'm in my 70s and still learn from you. Making purchases based on our Fantasy Self is one of the best items of advice.
I had to share my wins of the week with you guys. I got my own apartment and start my first job in 9 years after being a full time mom. I've been trying to keep an eye on what we are spending for the new place but it is so tempting to just grab that cute appliance or the fancy tv stand. I'm saving right now to buy a bunk bed.
My husband and I started something where we have to check in with each other before buying anything for our kids (ages 2 and 4). Essentially, before we buy something for our children, we have to ask each other if this is something we need to purchase for our children. We were in the habit of purchasing clothes, games, etc for our kids because we thought they would like it or we would say that they “need” it. But the reality was, they actually didn’t need it at all. They have plenty of clothes, toys, books, games, you name it. This has almost completely stopped our overspending on children’s things because it has made us more mindful of what we truly need. Most of the time, before I even ask my husband if we need it, I can already hear the answer in my head of “no.” Creating this check in has been a game changer, and it also makes us a team when it comes to where our money is being allocated.
I started the Dave Ramsey Baby Steps and canceled my credit cards to get shopping under control. It took years but I'm out of credit card debt and am paying cash for things! Yay! Not having store cards realllly helps. The cashier looks at me weird when I say I'm not using credit and don't want the store card.
Hmmm, since I started watching your videos I haven't spent on anything needlessly. I used to be a clothes horse but haven't bought any clothes last year or this year except socks, underwear, and a couple sweatshirts, so on my spend list the clothes category is empty. I am planning a trip in May to the Blueridge mountains with my daughter for a long weekend. It's budgeted for however. Therefore ms. Kate you have been most inspirational for me. Have cut my grocery bill by 100 bucks this month, thank you so much ❤️
I stretched Costco visits to 6 weeks. I also buy from a fairly fixed list of items. Finally, I shop Costco and my weekly grocery with a list - but once I hit the budget limit I usually check out. Occasionally, I increase the weekly buy but reduce spending (which I track) to meet my monthly limits.
Since I live about 25 miles from major stores, I keep a running shopping list and just go shopping once a week or 10 days and do my current errands then. I also 'shop' my house before I go to make sure I don't already have it and also that I have a place to put it. It helps me to put my list with my purse to make sure I have it with me.
That's me, I keep a running list of items I want to shop for in the closest city. I also have made a personal choice not to ever enter a Walmart, so that limits local shopping in the nearby rural town. I just don't enjoy online shopping at all, so that helps, too!
Look at the price and calculate how many hours you need to work for it, then ask the question: do I want this enough to work X number of hours? My answer is more often than not a resounding no.
Why ya gotta call me out like this? LOL shopping for my fantasy self is my biggest spending problem. I'm good with most things... but fantasy Mary and reality Mary are so different. Love this video Kate!
how about you go one step up.. and say like oh I love my fantasy shopping .. but instead of buying something that costs like 30-50$ and you buy without thinking next time try thinking like oh you know I deserve so much better quality stuff for the fantasy me. .and put that item back and try to take time like 5-10min before you think about it again.. I put down now so many clothes items back just by saying "I will buy when I can afford to get 3 of this same item.. at the 3x the price" this helps me get to my fantasy self so fast and also enjoy n buy less n good quality and saves money on long run ..i dont no if this makes sense..
One of my favorite things is I try to challenge myself to save money every payday which is over amt I have going into savings/investment accounts. I just have to check the day before I get paid and then transfer whatever I have left.
My Fantasy Self was going to have dinner parties. I bought dishes, glasses, napkins, tablecloths, serving ware galore. I Quit! I was an over spender on clothes but ran out of room. Watching your videos has me channeling this money into a Budget Buffer. Budgeting IS fun. I have always had a budget. I like manipulating the figures to get what I want. I just set up a category for a New Orleans cruise! I set up Every Dollar but need to watch your video on how to use it. Thanks Kate!!
Love Frugal Friday videos!! Oh the Fantasy Self really hit me!! Long story. I leased a partial farm for 20 years for my 3 horses, chickens & farm cats. Lived in town, ran out at least once a day to care for them. Had about 5 acres to work with, a huge magnificent 110+ yr old red barn. Collected a small tractor, wagons, manure spreader, assorted equipment, multiple coops, etc. Was told the property would Never be sold. I was responsible for all upkeep. Pounding in fence posts, fixing/installing barbed wire, chain sawing downed trees, was dabbling in cutting my own hay. I'm single, all by myself, in early 70s. WELL...the farm was Sold, rug ripped out from under me. Had to board my horses, give away chickens, coops, have lots of small scale farm equipment that I can't use now. Can't deal with selling it. Was originally planning to move into a farm with my boyfriend, but he died unexpectedly. Ugh. So my self sufficiency Fantasy came crashing down. I totally regret buying things I can't use now!! Wish I could redo my expensive mistakes. ❤
QUIT IT!!! Several times a year, I need to return an Amazon purchase. My return store always gives me a 10% off store purchase coupon... which I immediately and randomly pass along to someone in the store. I'm not tempted to spend and I get a friendly "thank you" from the recipient! Win/Win!!
When doing in-store purchases, if I am uncertain about a purchase, I will go ahead and put it in my cart and then walk around with it for a while as I’m browsing. 9 times out of 10, I will put the item back because my brain will win the battle over my heart……😉😊
I really like the "fantasy self" idea. I retired 9 months ago so my frivolous spending has already ended. The good thing is that I already bought all the stuff I need from now on for the most part 😆. My fantasy self is a voracious reader, loves to learn to cook new dishes and is awesome at doing home improvement projects... translation: I already have all the tools and supplies I need for most of the home projects I want to complete and I have few hundred books between my house and Amazon Kindle including a collection of about 30 cookbooks. I do some things around the house sporadically, and I read some and cook some, but I am hoping, now that I'm retired, that my retired self will turn into my fantasy self and I'll actually start doing these things much more... I'll see. Thanks for the video!
Yes! My fantasy self got really good at makeup and always goes out with a full face. Reality Hillary wakes up too late, has too many kids, and doesn’t enjoy the putting on process or feeling of makeup on her skin. Once I stopped buying for the “fantasy” girl, I had more money AND less guilt about not using the makeup!
I leave things in my shopping cart online - mostly Amazon - for at least 24 hours and it's just so often that I forget and never go back to that item. I also did not renew my prime subscription. No regrets. I still have never paid for shipping. You always have the option to agree to wait and they give you free shipping. Or if the order is over a certain amount you automatically get free shipping. I had run out of interest in their video streaming and truly the only thing I miss is the music streaming. But it's been over a year now and I can't say I miss it enough to cough up the money. And I truly don't order as much as I did before. Thank you for your encouragement.
So true about buying for your fantasy self! I did buy on sale a big kitchen aid mixer thinking I would have time to bake and cook from scratch. But it was bulky and hard to clean. I found out my standard mixer was just fine and what I used all the time anyway.
My biggest takeaway so far, is stop chasing the sale coupons or free shipping that encourage you to spend more to get the advantage. Focusing on reducing the clutter before it comes into the house.
Really good stuff!!! You described me perfectly when talking about your fantasy self and your real self! Crafts are my downfall right now. This time last year I was buying craft supplies like I was going to do all the things I saw the crafting UA-camrs do! Yup! I did! What has worked for me during this three (so far) no/low spend months is a little mantra I have and I say it a lot when tempted to spend. I NEED NOTHING, I HAVE ROOM FOR NOTHING! I ask myself that if I buy it, where am I going to put it??? The is NOWHERE! That helps me the most! Thanks for all the amazing content! Love ya bunches!
This right here. When I retired about 3 yrs ago I got into watching youtubers doing Diamond Art and so I went to town buying a lot of Diamond Art. I went after it like gang busters for about 2 yrs until my husband passed. Then I just couldn't back in to it. But I'm still keeping all the unopened ones cuz I could get back to it. Plus they were expensive and if I get back into it I'm not rebuying more. Lol. And I'm moving into a smaller apt so I'm going to adopt your mantra. I'm sure that will help.
I definitely need to say your mantra... I don't really have the ROOM for getting anything for craft stuff,,,matter a fact I need to purge lots...I find that really hard...not sure how I will be able to do that....I actually made out an order the other night, pressed send to my demo friend....went to bed, got up and messaged her and said cancel..it ALL....I have some house things that need fixing...,limited senior income...who am I kidding...lol I feel kind of bad I couldn't get it,,, but it felt great to be mature enough FINALLY to say NO...to more until I can ,guilt free....
@@samcrawford7148 Awesome on saying no and canceling it! The struggle is real for me, too! I need to purge but it is hard for me, too! I will be full time retired in May so I've got to cut out as many extras as I can.
Quit it! I found that even though it took three tries, I finally made it through no spend January and now it's so easy to not spend on wants. I also started decluttering and while going through my clothes I found pieces that I forgot I had and really like. I also came up with ways to restyle and embellish pieces and make them new. I am enjoying a like new wardrobe and have kept just my favs.
Having a clear cut goal to save for things I'm enthusiastic about helps me think twice before spending unnecessarily. Vacation travel is my favorite thing. Pay yourself first in savings. Don't carry a lot of cash on person. Make budgets & lists and update when needed. It helps me to stay out of stores. Revel and be proud of yourself when you reach goal markers. 🎉🎉. Thanks Kate. Happy weekend. 💕🌷🐦
Thinking of buying an instantpot. But since I'm still renovating and the kitchen is not installed I will just wait and look up a ton of recipies to coock with an instantpot. And I have a lot of time now to choose the perfect match for my cooking habits.
@@KateKaden thank you, I am having a very hard lonely week. Hub had to go hospital in emergency and is still there. He had a bleeding in his head. It goes slow but ik keep te eyes on the price. Meanwhile hotels food etc goes out like a roadrunner, I am happy I have made some changes so I can now choose to be with him. Breakfast is a supermarket banana, a hardbouiled egg and a slice of cheese. Because regular breakfast in the hotel is €17😱
My weakness is online shopping. I am also trying to declutter my house. I put things in my cart for a minimum of 3 days. If it is still there after a week it gets deleted. I also ask myself "do I need it or want it?" "Can I use it or will I have to clean it?" So many questions but so worth it!
My Husband HATES to shop so we only go once a month! I take the month to plan our purchases and with lots of waiting in-between, you really know what you want when the time comes! Xx
Quit it! I moved to a cash wallet and divided my spending money into categories like groceries take out coffee, crafts, personal and savings. I give my self a limited budget in each envelope, so I know if I want a bid item I have to save for it and if I spend any of it I’ll be further from my goal. It has really curbed the impulse purchases and has keep me focused. Thanks to no spend January I know I can due without in most cases and my savings is growing.
I utilize Walmart pickup. I add stuff to my cart, let it sit, then revise my cart and remove stuff before I check out. I do this with Amazon too. Only purchase every other week. Remove any unnecessary stuff or items that can wait. I also shop with a list. When I do my pickup at Walmart, I also run to Aldi right after across the street. Boom. Done.
When tempted to buy online, I've taken to asking myself how I'd feel if I paid cash for that item. I don't want to part with my cash so there's my answer!
Yes I need some shoes I am going to treat myself on my birthday in December delayed gratification is a good habit to save up and you don't get in trouble with your budget
i just stop hanging out with most of my friends.. I was the one who was footing the bill 85% of the time.. also stopped shopping for clothes.. ( i started to estimate if I spend 100$ an item how much time I have to wear it to break even. also considering laundry & maintenance time. this has helped me purchase a lot less.. also I am Indian and living in the USA so I take inventory of all my party wear dresses and I have significantly cut back and I was blessed to buy quality wardrobes and very timeless things that I can wear over n over with a bit of twist.. ( mostly the outfit gets worn like 3 times & can cost anywhere from 100$- 10000 of $ usd )
Happy, frugal Friday, Kate! I love your first tip on post purchase regret! That is something I have to do or start doing so I don’t purchase things I don’t need anymore!
Nail it girl 👍❤️😀 Belive me I'm guilty of purchases I have regretted 🤔👎 I have started to put things on a wish list and revisit this list in a few weeks. I was amazed on how much I DELETED 😲👍 I just started on having a conversation to myself on, will I truly use this item and I'm amazed most of the time I say NO😲👍 Thanks for sharing 🤗❤️
@@KateKaden I was always so scared signing into check my credit card balance. Now I look at it almost daily to keep an eye on things. So thankful for all your tips!
With gardening season getting closer every day, I need to keep my fantasy gardener under control and buy what I'm actually going to plant and take care of. My goal is no dead plants and unopened seed packets.
I have a fairly lame tip, but unless I walk into Costco knowing that I am getting something heavy, I do not take a cart with me. I just carry what I am going there to buy. I have a Costco close by so I can easily go there whenever I choose. Also, if I am carrying my purchases out, it prevents me from spending unnecessarily at the concession stand.
I don’t have a lot of regrets of the purchases but of the cost. We knew we needed a new Christmas tree because we used our last one for 20 years. We bought a new one after two years of looking and deciding. I enjoyed the tree and am glad to have it but still regret the expense. We have to do our deck and have been planning for years and I will enjoy the new deck but the expense is going to still be a regret.
Hi Kate, the best thing i did was to get rid of my storage space and donate boxes of clutter. This made realize how much I used to spend. I cut down on shopping since then
QUIT IT!! Oh my gosh! All the things: kitchen gadgets are my addiction. I have a home gym AND a gym membership. I got suckered into buying the "goal bathing suit" which hangs now as a reminder of my failure! 🤣🤣🤣 Don't even look at my garden seed stash! Thank heaven for your No Spend January Challenge, which broke my momentum. I'm doing great thanks to you!
Yes 🙌 i have already spent the money and just taking the time and gas to return it is not worth it like it did when i bought the item.. I usually just give to a friend or family member if they can use it or donate it
When dollar tree added a quarter to their products I stopped shopping there. I saw that Walmart had better prices a good amount of time. It used to be the easy impulse of it’s just a buck. Those bucks added up to at least $30 a month. I no longer buy the seasonal decor items . I’ve stopped decorating the outside of my home for the most part. We can’t really see it and enjoy it anyway. And I’m sick of buying cheap products just to end up having to replace them. Also, I use grocery pickup so it keeps me from having to make decisions in a store. Less temptation!
Remove credit card numbers from all online accounts, so you have to wait to buy until you dig out your card and enter the numbers. Time to rethink the purchase.
I take a picture of something I like when I am out shopping. I have a waiting period to think about whether I really need it and most times I decide no!! I am also not buying anything from TEMU!! I see so many influencers showing their TEMU hauls. All I see is stuff I don't need and will be decluttered im a year. As far as Amazon goes, I am only buying things we need like new bulbs for my vent hood and vacuum cleaner filters.
One of my weaknesses is CATALOGS - I look through them and when I see something that grabs me - I dog-ear the page. Then I put the catalog in a file near my computer. If the item ‘haunts’ me, I probably will go ahead and order it. But most of the time I forget completely about it and end up throwing the catalog away. But, THESE days I don’t even bring the catalogs into the house! I dump them in the recycle bin right from the mailbox!! 👍🙋♀️🥰
There a have been a few times that I have purchased something, that I thought I really wanted. The last time I did, a really good concert that I really wanted to go to. But I didn't have the money. Now I really think about that if I want to buy something. You never know what will come up, that might be a good experience or opportunity.
Watching UA-cam videos, I come across plenty of items that catch my eye. I go to Amazon and find it, review if it is something that I might actually want, then I put it on my Amazon list………then I close out of Amazon. At some point later, I look at the items on the list and reevaluate. Many times I delete items that don’t interest me anymore. I do have a few items that have remained on the list, but are for my fantasy self. I am waiting for when my fantasy self becomes reality. (Those items are for a healthier lifestyle, but more expensive than I want to spend now.) Also, at the beginning of the year I did an inventory. I have told myself that I shouldn’t buy any of the following items unless I am completely out of them: tea, skincare/beauty products, books, and stationery items such as pens, paper and stickers. These are the items that I gravitate towards in stores and online, hence why I have too many of them. For books, I am using the library, reading what I have, or borrowing from other people.
Quit it!! I am so proud of myself for not getting something that I thought I wanted 🙂 My tip is to just make a list of what is actually needed, so when you go to stores like HomeGoods, you aren't likely to overspend on random things!

I've been trying to keep an eye on what we are spending for the new place but it is so tempting to just grab that cute appliance or the fancy tv stand. I'm saving right now to buy a bunk bed.
🎉🎉🎉🎉I am so stinkin proud of you!!!🙌🙌🙌😍❤️😍❤️😍❤️
My husband and I started something where we have to check in with each other before buying anything for our kids (ages 2 and 4).
Jamie, thanks so much for watching and sharing with us!
Have cut my grocery bill by 100 bucks this month, thank you so much ❤️
Avoid shopping at weakness stores like Dollar store and Costco. I make a specific list and only allow 1 visit a month lol
Great plan!
Love that you said to shop your house. What a great idea!
YES LOVE that you "shop" your house!!! Perfect!
Quit It. Waiting period works amazingly. I've done it many times and it really works.
YASSS!!!! Love it!
MARY! I MISS YOU!!!!! I'm so so happy to see you!!!!!!
Thanks Kate!!
omg i can so relate to this.. i was not soo much in fantasy party category but i was so much in to just gooing out n spending on good dinner & drinks
Quit it! Mine is exactly what you mentioned. If it's not a heck yeah, it's a hell no. Such a good tip.
YASSSS Ayra!!!!!
Win/Win!!
YASSSS Judy! You rock!
I focus on needs and not wants. When I shop I actually need it.
YASSS Karla!
When doing in-store purchases, if I am uncertain about a purchase, I will go ahead and put it in my cart and then walk around with it for a while as I’m browsing. 9 times out of 10, I will put the item back because my brain will win the battle over my heart……😉😊
Love this!!!!!
I do the same and it always goes back on the shelf.
Love this!
@@melissathompson9205 I'm so sorry about your husband passing. I hope that you will soon be able to find joy again doing things you loved!
Happy frugal Friday everyone.
Happy Frugal Friday!
Because regular breakfast in the hotel is €17😱
Having a relisten ❤. All the illusions. Reality and gratitude are my medicine. 🏠💕🙏💐🏠
YASSS!
😩I’m one of those people who returns too much, I’m going to stop buying stuff for a while. And buy my kids shoes in person to avoid all the returns
NICE Michelle! Great plan!
My weakness is online shopping. I am also trying to declutter my house. I put things in my cart for a minimum of 3 days. If it is still there after a week it gets deleted. I also ask myself "do I need it or want it?" "Can I use it or will I have to clean it?" So many questions but so worth it!
Good morning, Squad!
Good morning!
My Husband HATES to shop so we only go once a month! I take the month to plan our purchases and with lots of waiting in-between, you really know what you want when the time comes! Xx
Kaden and Kate Love 💘 ❤ 💕 💗 💖 ♥
Thank you Wanda!
I have no spend days low spend month budget for big purchases
Quit it!! The waiting before purchasing is the hardest for me! Great tips!!
Thanks so much for watching and sharing with us Danielle! Have an amazing weekend. See you next week!
I have become friends with a miser. Seeing how extreme she is with not spending was eye opening! It has made me revisit how I spend my money.
QUIT IT! Oh, especially fantasy self! Can anyone say too many unfinished crafts 😉
Love this video! Thanks Kate
YASSS!!! Thanks Mary!
YASSS HEATHER!!!
Love the idea of post purchase regrets !!! I have many !
❤️❤️🥰
Yes I need some shoes I am going to treat myself on my birthday in December delayed gratification is a good habit to save up and you don't get in trouble with your budget
Shop your entire home, not just your closet and your pantry. Amazing what you can forget you have because it's in the back of a drawer or cupboard.
YASSSSS!!!!!!! Love it.
I now prioritize my needs over my wants.
🙌🙏❤️
QUIT IT!! I have to make a purchase today that I wish I didn’t have to. It’s under $20, but still. Happy Friday!!
HAPPY FRIDAY KRISTIN!!!!
i just stop hanging out with most of my friends..
Quit it! 🤑 the tip that works for me is putting purchased in my cart and then waiting at least one week before purchasing.
YASSS!!!
Happy, frugal Friday, Kate! I love your first tip on post purchase regret! That is something I have to do or start doing so I don’t purchase things I don’t need anymore!
Thanks so much!!!!! Have an amazing weekend Marino!
I have a list of wants and needs and I don’t buy any wants until I’ve saved a certain amount first. It’s been working well!
Thank you Pamela!!!
Quit it !!!...Started a low buy year with the aim of making it a habit...not easy...Thank you for all the advice :)
Proud of you!!!!
The mixer example made me LOL! I have one that I have used about 3 times and it is so heavy I can barely pick it up to move it.
Yes I say that Kate buying coffee here and there or buying a bread scroll from bakery a scratchies here a set for life there a ball of wool here
These are so so so good. I've fallen prey to all of them, and NO MORE!! :)
YASSS Julie!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for being here! Hope it was helpful!
I’m new to this frugal life. Your my inspo!
Nicole! WELCOME! I'm so glad you are here! How's it going so far? I remember when I started! I got so excited!!!
@@KateKaden I was always so scared signing into check my credit card balance. Now I look at it almost daily to keep an eye on things. So thankful for all your tips!
Good Morning! Yes, I have that mixer! :)
LOL! YASSSS!!!
I will buy only a new book, if I finished or donated the unread books.
Nice Kerstin!
Grocery pickup!
YASSS good one!
Good morning 🙏 🌄 "Quit It"
Good morning Alisa!
With gardening season getting closer every day, I need to keep my fantasy gardener under control and buy what I'm actually going to plant and take care of. My goal is no dead plants and unopened seed packets.
Excellent lesson Kate ! I don't shop online and I stay out of stores as much as possible. I used to windowshop for entertainment, but don't now.
Kathy, thanks so much for watching and sharing with us!
Thanks so much for watching and sharing with us Alison!
Quit it!! I love you videos and find them so useful! Thank you!
Thank you so so much! I'm so glad you are here!
Hi Kate, the best thing i did was to get rid of my storage space and donate boxes of clutter. This made realize how much I used to spend. I cut down on shopping since then
Love this Linda!!!
I tell myself its ok to like even love something in the store without needing to buy it. 😊
I love that!
QUIT IT!!
Ready to get it back on track this month! Thank you 🙏
YASSSS Let's do this!
Quit it!
Thanks for all these great reminders
You are very welcome Katherine! Have an amazing weekend!
YASSS! Thank you Elizabeth!
Love this Susan!
Good morning ☀️
Good morning!
Hi Kate love from australia
One of my weaknesses is CATALOGS - I look through them and when I see something that grabs me - I dog-ear the page. Then I put the catalog in a file near my computer. If the item ‘haunts’ me, I probably will go ahead and order it. But most of the time I forget completely about it and end up throwing the catalog away. But, THESE days I don’t even bring the catalogs into the house! I dump them in the recycle bin right from the mailbox!! 👍🙋♀️🥰
Good morning ☀️
Quit it!! Another great video, thank you for the great advice!
Thank you Ashley!!!!
There a have been a few times that I have purchased something, that I thought I really wanted. The last time I did, a really good concert that I really wanted to go to. But I didn't have the money. Now I really think about that if I want to buy something. You never know what will come up, that might be a good experience or opportunity.
Totally! Thanks for watching and sharing with us Vona!
I quit it! Wrote my want list down & budget for it.
YASSS! Awesome!
Trying to break my habit of too much thrift store shopping.
@@faith4754 That sounds good. Thank you for this!
You've got this! I believe in you!
Quit it !! Great video. I needed this.
I'm so glad it was helpful Christi!
(Those items are for a healthier lifestyle, but more expensive than I want to spend now.)
Also, at the beginning of the year I did an inventory.
YASS! Thank you so much for sharing with us!
I'm doing the same with books. I'm reading the few in my nightstand and then will use the library for books or an app.
We did a redo our the deck too!
Quit it!! I am so proud of myself for not getting something that I thought I wanted 🙂 My tip is to just make a list of what is actually needed, so when you go to stores like HomeGoods, you aren't likely to overspend on random things!
YASS Lyla!
