Helpful video! I'm just a homeowner, but I use UDL 50 Titanium which is super-strong and wouldn't tear or stretch like the RhinoRoof. The roll is very heavy, but I'm in a very high wind area and want a good underlayment. I'm always tethered in. The only times that I've slipped on a roof is on the rope or hose, so your warning is well heeded. Just got the cap nailer and looking forward to using it.
We use Rhino Shield also on all roofs. Unbelievable as it is my crew has those magnetic hatchet hammers and they can put those cap nails in running almost. Glad to see the builder cares enough to get this house dried in quick as possible rather than wait until it's finished.
Rhino is good stuff. Getting dried in as soon as possible has always been my main goal once I start framing. Glad to see a fellow Carpenter commenting on my video. Thanks for watching!
Don't roofs need the ice and water shield paper ?and then comes the synthetic underlayment? Btw I don't know anything about roofing just here learning with your videos
Good info thanks for sharing this .I'm going to be using the rhino underlayment on my roof soon, one question is should I overlap it on the roof peak or just cut it off at the peak?
I am doing a garage roof with not too drastic a pitch. It seems awful slippery even dry. Can you trust the surface when the underpayment is capped down? I am thinking I may have to lay down a few rows then start installing the shingles over it just to prevent the slippery slide.
Thinking about building my own home (using Avrame structural kit) and came across your channel. Just started watching through all ur videos. Good stuff, I want to actually start a channel myself eventually.
Yes start building and recording. That’s what I’ve been doing and I love it. I never heard of a structural kit like that. Maybe make a video on it. Do you work in the construction field?
The Excellent Laborer no I’m an accountant haha. But I enjoy working on cars, little woodworking projects, etc. I’m confident I can pick it up. The kits they make for the structure are all pre cut and drilled with hardware. I would just need to source everything else, but they do all the plans and everything needed for building permits and whatnot.
Very interesting. I will look into that just saw curiosity. I definitely think anybody can build a house on their own if they really want to and have basic understanding of carpentry. Are used to be in business before I was in construction and accounting seems very interesting to me as well.
Where do you get the gun, I'm planning to install a new roof and I need the kind of gun yesterday I went to home depot but I dont find anything like that
One other question... talked to GAF and they tell me none of their underlayment will keep water out. How is this good taking you no doubt will get rain on the underlayment, especially working alone as I fo. What's your experience Josh? Thx Jeff
Amazing Framer Thanks a lot for the feedback! I’m hoping it makes things easier to record when doing stuff like this yet getting a good message across. Thanks for watching man. There’s a reason why they call you the Amazing Framer!
Why didn't you snap lines, always snap a line for the first piece of paper and first row of starter and 6th row of shingles especially if you're by yourself
Josh, please do a video for any and all of the roofers that think it's ok to roll new underlayment over top of any nails that are left lying on the roof after the old shingles and old paper are removed. ........While watching a crew of roofers replace a 30 + year old roof , i noticed that they didn't pick up any of the nails lying on the tongue and groove after everything was torn off. They just started rolling new paper over them , they either thought it was ok to NOT have a smooth , clean surface before rolling out , so as to NOT compromise the paper or they didn't care just wanting to wham bam thank you mam'. In your usual kind way of hipping people up to the right way of doing something, PLEASE do !!!....As you already know, "Anything worth doing is worth doing right ." Thanks, Josh
Dave is the man! I used his techniques to give me the freedom I have today. Thanks for the feedback on the voice over. I try to be safe most the time. Sometime the gear kinda gets in the way. I will keep pumping out content for sure. I love making videos. Thanks!
Thise cap nails are thrash. Use staples. Roof will never leak. And if you have blow offs warranty says you will put shingles back on. Use staples way better. Faster. 1 box will last 3 jobs.
Cap nails/cap staples hold way better than just staples itself. Plus if you're using solely staples, you can't staple in the field, only on the top overlap. If you staple all over, and the roof isn't being put on for a week or more and it rains a few days before then, water will work its way through the staple he's, especially if its a lower pitch. Plus those caps make sure the staples are all the way in, with a hammer tacker 100% of the staples aren't in fully.
@@Josh-ww5kz I respect your comment man but but in saskatchewan where it rains thunder thundershowers and we leave roofs covered with synthetic underlayment. And staples it doesnt leak at all. Even when it rains and even when shingles blow off the staples hold the paper down cap nails = Waste if money bix of staples will last you 4 roofs
@@RoofDRyxe306 I'm from Saskatchewan. Did roofing there for a few years. We used staples, but back then I would just staple everywhere as we would shingle in the area torn off that same day. We left a few sections just with underlayment for a few days when it was raining hard, not much water got in but you can definitely notice water marks if you were to pull the underlayment up. Now I live in Vancouver, BC. Rains a lot more here than Saskatchewan but not as hard, just straight rain for a few days straight. Don't get any thunderstorms here either. But haven't met a single roofer who staples in the field here because they know better. One day it could be clear as day, then the rest of the week it will be raining. If it's new construction it isn't as bad, but when it's a re roof and there's already people living there and the house is already finished being built, gotta make sure even a little bit of water will get in as it will show up within a day on the drywall.

What did you think of the voice over with the GoPro footage?
Voice over when the sound is balanced is always a strong addition to the value of the content.
It's perfect makes the learning easier

Wonderful video and I like the voiceover approach. Safety first.
The voice over was great. No complaints. Great job explaining the importance of the first row and having it as stable as possible.
Thanks for the feedback. It really helps a lot. Yes the first row is important not to be shifty if the edge is that close. Thanks for the comment!
The voice over is actually better than live
So you like the voice over better than the other type of recording?

Rhino says not to use staples though that it voids warranty. Also do you not overlap to the other side of the roof like you do with felt?

Correct! All circles for warranty. We put shingles on fast so we don’t have to worry about it blowing off. Thanks for watching!

what about the wrinkles in underlayment?
Are the caps a necessity for synthetic underlayment? Can you use normal staples?
Yes you want to use cabs or staples. It all depends on how windy in your area is.

A roofing specialty store or some lumber suppliers

Good job

City Code Use Nail Cap Only
In Paper Underlayment #15 or #30
But Not in Synthetic Underlayment.

In the instructions for rhino roof it says not to use staples!!!!!
Although it is a staple holding the cap nail, this system is technically nails because it is using a nail head. Hope that helps!
