The breath-ability is very attractive of the tar paper.
OMG why does everyone with a youtube channel think they need music in the background. And then you read comments and everybody wants the music turned off. Please we are trying to hear you and don't care about the music. How do you possibly think music helps your presentation? By the way --great topic and material in spite of trying to be fancy with the editing.
Totally agree with you and we have that fixed now. Our editor just needed some time to get the videos right. If you haven't checked out our channel lately, we've got a lot of other great videos coming out with really, really hot girls running in bikinis for the FULL VIDEO while I talk about roofing and construction that you might enjoy with lower music ;) Like this one for example - ua-cam.com/video/z2OWDXYV_mM/v-deo.html

@@DigitalRoofingInnovations music is still on
I agree, the music is annoying.
I feel the same about movies, music is unnecessary most of the time and interferes with hearing the actors. 😏
Thank you. I'm getting ready to have my roof repaired and this was very helpful!!!
I am glad to hear that! Both work great and I still think too many people put too much emphasis on underlayment, but it does have some major benefits (I have it on my house!). Thank you for the comment and glad we could help.
Thanks for sharing.
Informative! Thank you. What about Ice and Water Shield? We use that in Mid Atlantic area for snow freeze thaw cycles which cause ice dams. Water then backs up under shingles and can cause damage without it.
Awesome 👍👍👍👍
Great editing on this video. I was bored and wanted to see the cost difference per square foot on 30# and synthetic in our area. The cheapest roll of #30 felt was $15.75 for 216 feet which works out to be around $0.07 per square foot. The cheapest synthetic felt was $64 per 1,000 square feet which works out to around $0.06 per square foot!
Very cool. Great video, Zach!
Chris, I am glad we weren't the ones who bored you! And you are exactly right, it's just as economic and is a better quality product IF the roof is properly vented. Thanks for the input!
Great video- question for you. We have been having leaking from our 20 year old Spanish tile roof and were told that the underlayment is very poor. Most of the tile is in good shape, with some tiles being cracked. Would removing the tile and then putting new underlayment an then replacing the tiles be an option? We estimate that with our house (about 8100 SF roof; 6/12 pitch), cost of totally new roof with Spanish barrel tile is around $170000- perhaps less expensive if we went with a composite Spanish tile.
Hi thank for your video I Live in a hot climate country heat all year round is synthetic paper is best to use?
Do breathable synthetic underlayments have any benefits over regular synthetic underlayments for high pitch shingle roofs in cold climates (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada... think north of North Dakota)? Thanks very much for any thoughts.
Stupid question: would it be bad to install 2 layers of synthetic underlayment? Double the protection in the event of a shingle problem
Can you make a video on flat roof installation?
Love the videos! How much extra should one consider for soft costs and labour? So with a home but also commercial or hoteling projects?
I want to hire you to do my tile roof in McAllen, Texas.
Is grip right a recommended brand or would you recommend rhino roof although more expensive?
It depends on the application, but both can be used. If the roof is really steep, I would recommend the Rhino because the GripRite can be a little slick for the crews.
How does the synthetic underlayment hold up in the wind, before shingles are laid?
Using round plastic head nails
Please suggest which of these shingles underlayment combination is best for Florida?
-1 layer of weather lock G Granulated Ice and water and 1 layer of Rhino synthetic
-2 layers of RhinoRoof synthetic underlayment and WeatherLock Specialty Tile and Metal for the high temp water barrier at all valleys, along walls, and around roof penetrations.
-1 layer of RhinoRoof® Granulated Self-Adhered Underlayment
They will all work the same.
Thoughts on Titanium UDL 50? Im getting my roof replaced for the first time and new to this. Just learned about synthetic and really leaning toward it.
It's good stuff. We put synthetic down 95% of the time.
@@DigitalRoofingInnovations I walked on my 2 week old new roof yesterday and I was amazed how cool the shinles were. The synthetic made a huge difference.
@@chrisginoc how come? What's the explanation?
Great info, please consider getting the music track off, very annoying!
Hi first of all thank you for your video. My question is how often do I need to change underlayment on my clay tile roof, my roof is now 27 years old and I have been told that I need to change it. What are your thoughts on that. Also, I live in the desert and I have a clay tile roof. What underlayment would you recommend for my type of roof and weahter. Thank you so much for your answer.
If you can, find out who the manufacture is of your shingle, and ask them what they recommend. There is no perfect answer without knowing who made the tile and what they have tested.
@@DigitalRoofingInnovations yes, his answer is correct. and i think ice and water sheild will be better if in the desert, but price may expensive
What are your thoughts on how it holds up when exposed to the weather prior to the installation of the shingles? I've experienced leaks around the plastic tops when exposed on the synthetics. After talking with the manufacturer's rep, he recommended not leaving it exposed...smh
I would say there may be an installation issue. I have had open roofs for up to a week with only synthetic protecting.
@@DigitalRoofingInnovations, I worked for a builder back in the 70's and he always had me cover the roof with 15# asphalt impregnated felt and I lathed it down with wood lath. We would do this in the fall, and it would not get shingles until the spring. Never had a leak problem. He did this with all his houses if I was going to be the only one shingling. We didn't have a big crew, and he always started building a house in June. This was in Fargo, ND and yes it does get windy in Fargo.
ooorah!
I put a tarp over my bare garage roof because a storm was coming. I was going to put on a felt underlay. Looking at the tarp all tight and tidy on my garage roof, I was wondering if there would be any benefits to applying the underlay on top of the tarp and just shingling over both of them...
get real
tar paper, 100%. It's cheap as hell, and will breath better.
30 lb felt is best except they offer peel and stick in florida which is the very best, synthetic leaks without shingles done right installed over it, , these roofers dont like extra weight of felt, man up
Peel and stick makes roof repair or replacement a nightmare.
Went looking today and it seems like a lot of the synthetic underlayments are made in China. Ended up buying 30lbs tar paper made in USA.
Is it also more breathable ?
Great! The music is pretty distracting, tho
What about a flat roof ? No one talk about what the best underlayment for flat roof ?
Next time please omit the annoying music.
Great video...get rid of the background "this old house" music...or any music for that matter, and it will be better.
Thanks! Always a work in progress
