Thank you. Great value. Today I rented a dumpster and began demo. As the old work is uprooted the prior installers didn't even peel the plastic strips to expose the tar strip.
No one does a good job. And then they go defraud the insurance cos, jacking up my rates.

Which products reduce noise from airplane flyovers the most? My general understanding from other sound deadening / noise reduction products is that the heavier the material the more noise reduction you get. (30 lbs felt paper or a heavy synthetic like Owens Corning Titanium UDL 50) seem like they'd do a better job than lighter, thinner underlayment).
Most of the new synthetic underlayments seem to advertise more benefits to the installers than the home brewers from what I've been reading.

interesting how the culture play a part here. In Brazil wood frame and steel frame as relatively new and no one uses asphalt underlayment, it´s considered that only countries that are used to it still uses, on new construction only synthetic ones. In commercial buildings with more detailed projects sometimes is completely forbidden use asphalt underlayment that is considered a inferior product. I am not saying that I agree, I don´t have enough experience to do that but... it´s how it works here.

I tend to agree. When I filmed this, they synthetic underlayments were just getting started. Anymore, that's all we use.

@RoofingIntelligence I recently did a roofing on a 20 year old house , ice and water shielt was used 6 feet up from the roof edge and 3 feet up the rakes. The shingles had basically moulded themselves to all the eaveshield leaving us no choice but to tear off the plywood as well. This added an extra day to our job and it was a huge pain in the butt! Have you ever ran into this before?

I've heard that 30 lb felt has the important role of providing a source of asphalt to replenish the asphalt in the shingles as they dry out with age. Roofs with synthetic underlayment will fail 20% earlier because there is no replenishment with the synthetics. Just what I've heard.

@@living2day617 Interesting idea, but I have a couple of problems. In retrospect, I don't think there is enough asphalt within felt to really serve as a reservoir, though maybe the old tar paper could. Second, almost all of the synthetics are non-permeable, so they act as a vapor barrier on the WRONG side of the deck. Then, underlayment does not prevent leaks, except for I&W shield. Synthetic underlayment does not seal around nail holes, and there will be hundreds of nails holes through the underlayment once the shingles are applied. If the shingles leak, the underlayment will not stop it from reaching the deck. For roof longevity, I think a thicker shingle makes more sense. For my recent reroof, I chose Malarkey Legacy shingles which have 1/3 more material than their Vista line and most other shingle brands. I also went with Malarkey Right Start Permeable underlayment which is very breathable and still sheds water as well as the non-permeable underlayments. I did consider GAF Deck Armor since it is permeable, but it does not shed water, which makes me wonder what the point even is with that and why it would be any better than no underlayment at all.

In the USA they tend to rely on these underlays too much . Surely if the roofs are tiled or slated properly it should not get through to the underlay. The pitch of the roofs obviously is an issue. They are too shallow. In Europe its not normal to fit roofs on low pitches

GAF tells their underlayment will not keep out water. If it rains before you shingle, your wood is getting wet.
    How's this a good thing?
