I love this song in both versions. As I commented on the Pink Floyd reaction, this is my favorite post-Roger Waters Floyd song. Nightwish's version is totally kick ass.
For being a PF fan for ever and seen them several times, this is the ultimate tribute to the Floyd.

Hey. Drama on song and on stage. Jukka's passion for playing can only be admired ... how he went through this despite the difficulties. Emppu visited him during the performance ... about Tuomas' hint. And Marco completely nailed this song. This version was in honor of the song.
This song match so well with the mood at that time in Nightwish's band.
I’ve watched this performance countless times and it still gives me goosebumps. Marco’s voice is incredible and he couldn’t have done it any better! Emppu nailed it once again, I was seriously impressed by his work on this one. Tuomas once again showed is talent in this one, he is a musical genius! Jukka has always been one of my favorites in this band, the emotion and energy he brought every time he performed makes him one of my favorite drummers. I hope he is doing well and he is missed. Kai is amazing though and they didn’t miss a beat with him coming in. Great performance, and great reaction as always:)
marko was under the weather, Jukka had a migraine, and of course they were going to dismiss Tarja after this show...this was not a fun show for them BUT they still gave it their all
This was such a hard show for the guys. Jukka apparently had a migraine, Marko was sick, and Tuomas was trying to handle the grief of what was coming. There's a moment at the start of the Ever Dream song they were doing that night, that incredibly beautiful song, when Tuomas had to stop playing and covered his face for a moment. Because it was the last time.
THIS performance just draws the soul out of me. Makes me damp behind the knees.

I just love the way Sistah gets when a song hits her in the feelings.
I love both Pink Floyd and Nightwish and like both versions. They are completely different ways for treating the song and I can’t pick a clear winner here. Just suffice to say loved them both and leave it at that. ❤️🤘🇦🇺
After listening to ths fantastic performace, I listened to David Gilmore´s original version. I found it a watered version of Nightwish´s.

What a tribute to Pink Floyd. The eerie atmosphere they create, mostly thanks to Tuomas I guess. But the whole performance, each guy doing just great. Marko, Emppu, Jukka.
There was a man in the audience shouting "Hyvä Marko!", litterally "Good Marko!" in the middle of the song. And the same man just before the end of the song: "Loistavaa!" "Splendid!"

Btw Marko won the finnish "masked singer" this year. It was funny as he was the only singer I recognized from the first performance.
Tribute in the song and the lighting... The circle of lights above the stage is also a tribute to Pink Floyd

To me the Pink Floyd version sounds like an old man reminiscing about when he had high hopes. Marco sounds more like someone just trampled his kite. I like both versions a lot though.
As a long time Pink Floyd fan I have to say that the Nightwish cover is one of the very few Pink Floyd covers that I really like.It respects the original and they put it in their own universe. Perfekt.

For me, choosing between Pink Floyd and Nightwish is not very complicated.
To relax or during a dinner with friends, it's Pink Floyd.
While driving on the highway or at a party with friends, it's Nightwish.
But, Nightwish while driving is more expensive in speed tickets than Pink Floyd.

I think we should be clear about the firing thing. Tarja had already quit the band for her solo career, but her leaving date had been set for the end of the tour. The band brought the leaving date forward. The best analogy: you quit your job and give your employer two weeks notice. In the first week of that notice period, you weren't exactly committed to your job responsibilities, so your boss tells you not to bother coming back for the second week. Did you quit or were you fired, or both?
About the song, I can't imagine what it was like to go through this, knowing what was coming. There's one song in this concert, unfortunately I can't remember which one, where Tuomas can't start playing. He's holding his face in his hands, while the rest of the band waits for him. I think he was visualizing that moment as being the end of the road.
The song you're thinking of is Ever Dream. About 1 minute into the song, Tuomas covers his face with his hands and just stands like that for a few seconds. God knows what was crossing his mind during those few seconds...

Not exactly. The idea was to do 1 more album with Nightwish and after that leave the band. If it was the idea to do a tour for that album and leave then or not i dont know.
But ,the open Letter write Tuomas. And became all the hate..Many forget Emppu, Jukka and Marko discribe this Letter. I look the End of Era Show on YT. You see the Distance between Tarja and the Band.And see Wacken 2013, how much fun they have..👍

It would have been far better to simply say that Tarja had decided to leave the band and that the band had decided that earlier was better than later for everyone concerned. As you pointed out, a critical examination of this concert shows that the chemistry was gone.
Tarja and Floor recently had a very nice chat on Tarja's Instagram stream. Nightwish was barely mentioned, high heels and sore feet got most of the air time, but Tarja in a brief moment alluded to some regret over her choices with Nightwish. It was only one sentence, but it demonstrated she had realized that things could've been handled better at her end. I think that is a sentiment that all of them now share.
I discovered Nightwish and this version of High Hopes only recently, and I mourn the lost years that I could have been listening to it. Both versions are amazing for different reasons, so my mood determines my preference, and it's only preference. Thanks for a great discussion.
I'll say it (as a PF fan): This is the version I would wish to have if I am ever stranded on a deserted island, and can only have one version.

Original is kind of "spacey" and I like that sound on it but NW is "rocky" so this works for me better

I’ve been a big Pink Floyd since the 70s and a fan of Roger Waters and David Gilmore both since the split, but I honestly recognize this High Hopes version is by far my favorite, but I must also recognize that Nightwish with Floor Jansen is my all time favorite band, so there’s that.🤟🤟✌️✌️🇨🇦

Being a Pink Floyd fan for over 40 years and a Nightwish fan for just 1,5 year I would say I love the tribute (thanks Ralf) now even better than the original. But I do agree with you Wolfkain, I love the Nightwish version because it has been Nightwished. But the PF version is still equaly impressive.
@halflifesistah: When I became a fan of Pink Floyd I was in my teens, somewhere early in the seventies. So yeah, teenagers are fans of Pink Floyd. It's only been a while, now being 63.
I like Nightwish version more, it is darker and suits the mood of the songs lyrics better imo. And its Markos vocals ❤️

This is one of the more overlooked PF songs - eclipsed by the more mainstream songs that we are all familiar with. I'm a fan of PF but I honestly never really cared for this song much. This cover brings the power that I always thought it deserved.

Nightwish is the Sherlock Holmes of music, they miss no detail. Fn amazing. They are simply great.
Don´t worry too much about not realizing that Floor is growling in "Yours Is An Empty Hope". I didn´t realize the first few times either. Though I have to admit, that I was listening to the CD and had no live video back then (rediscovering Nightwish in 2016). Just thought they´d layered the voice of Marko with clean vocals and growling underneath. :D Floor is just so good and can transition from clean to growls so easily.

*The advantage of Nightwish is that they are really good musicians. They may not be the greatest "showmen", because they are into playing their music [or the music they like....] instead of acting. They don't put on roles.....on stage they are all the same....themselves. That's why their instrumentals are great ["Moondance" and "Last Of The Wilds"] or their live-mashup of an theme from "Crimson Tide" [Score by Hans Zimmer] with the theme from "Deep Blue Sea" [Score by Trevor Rabin] (which you can find on Nightwish's "From Wishes To Eternity"-Live-DVD)....*

I love both versions for different reasons and it would depend on my mood to which I would queue up to listen to. If your just chilling read a book relaxing it would be Floyd. If I wanted to get pumped and rock out it would be Nightwish. They are equally fabulous and shouldnt be compared to one another because they are such different genres of music imo. I've heard the Floyd version since it came out and love the song. I didnt run across NWs version till about a year ago but appreciate the shit out how they interpreted the song. I'm a hundred percent with you, HalfLifeSistah. The arrangement, every single instrument is perfect. Marko is a vocal god. He was then and he still is today. Even though he may be an older and slightly less powerful god, a god he remains. His voice affects me just like it does you.
My first ever album I paid for myself (11 yrs old at the time) was Dark side of the moon.
Original is Great, but Nightwish did make this their own so that it Sounds Also Nightwish even it is ”just” a cover!
And Great songs deserves Great covers that Also stands on their own feets! A masterpiece!

Random Trivia: The reason for the Marko covers is essentially that they could give Tarja a break mid-set, and they just ended up popular (like Symphony of Destruction that ended up on the siren single)
As for Floyd vs Nightwish, I think I prefer the Nightwish Song, but the Gilmour solo
I was in this End of Era concert all these years ago. Epic concert over all. It's interesting what this High Hopes has risen up after all these years with all reactions in youtube. Back then I didn't know the song and hearing this first time in concert I didn't know what it was. Love this High Hopes version and it's better in my opinion then what Pink Floyd did. It was tribute to them but still I like this version better than the original.
main reason Tarja isn't on stage is cause this song was played while she took a break to change clothes too , so its just the guys, and given Tuomas is a huge Pink Floyd fan that look he right after start was like " don't screw this up"
Thank you for sharing! I discovered the Nightwish version a while ago and showed it to my husband, who is a big Pink Floyd fan. He liked it and agrees that it's a great cover but he still prefers the original. He then let me listen to the original High Hopes and I have to say that I love them both. To me they each manage to evoke a different emotion with the same lyrics : Pink Floyd has a melancholic feeling, Nightwish gives us more angst, thanks also to Marco's vocal interpretation.

IMO this cover is more hopeful than the original. Pink Floyd's version. The original is more lamenting on the past, and Nightwish's version seems to be looking more to the future while also looking back.

the lyrics are meant to be at the end of your life or at least the last leg from Pink Floyd IMO and with that in mine the mood of PF sits better.... however the NW version can as you say be interrupted as you have said. As 40+ year old Pink Floyd fan as I can say I enjoyed the NW version and it invokes a different set of emotions to an old favourite song - that is a good thing.

A really great cover, Marko has a great raw voice and this is a perfect foil for it.
i just want to give my love to Emppu! i usually don't like Pink Floyd and David Gilmour to be covered. i don't know what it is that makes them so hard to be covered. i was so nervous hearing this for the first time, cause i love Gilmour and Emppu, and i didn't want Emppu to go wrong with this..boy, have i misjudged him! he did great! so elegantly and beautiful! without a touch of arrogance or trying to compete/overtop Gilmour. i love you, Emppu!🤍💜

If you consider the lyrics to tell about how past times were better this song has even more weight considering the fact that this concert was the last event when the band was still playing together.
It’s a phenomenal cover, saw them live on their Once tour in 2005 and they still captivate me , maybe even more so. A truly 1 off band, we’re blessed to have them in our lives. 🤘
Oh I forgot Something since this is about Nightwish covers and how they do them, you guys should check out the album Music that is inspired by the Life and Times of scrooge mcduck by Tuomas Holopainen, I highly recommend A Lifetime of Adventure and the last sled from that album they are epic.
I hadn't heard the Pink Floyd version honestly, so I checked it out. It's very good, and haunting in a different kind of way. I prefer Marco's voice and the build up of NW's version, but the original is still something special. They chose a good one to pay tribute to!

first time i had heard this and yes I enjoyed Nightwish cover, but it doesn't move me the same way as the original, the original is so much more emotive and brings me to tears. but its not that I didn't enjoy the nightwish cover! but I appreciate this! well done!
Basically they just made it heavier. It depends whether you like that or not as you mentioned Gilmour's solo, and what emotions it gives. Also, for many of us songs that we first heard and learned to love are the version we like, they have become part of our treasury. It could be a cver already - like Gary Moore's Over the Hills and Faraway. I heard it at the 80's, and for decades thought it was the original :) So for me that beca,e the 'real' song.
It's really Emppu and Jukka, and Marco's singing style that makes this heavier. I think you guys should also have given a shout out to Jukka when you mentioned band mebers - his drums give this a kick, as well as Emppu - and the singer, what was his name? :)

Since Sistah is interested in Marko, why not give a listen to his own band, Tarot? She will probably love how his voice works perfectly outside the symphonic metal style.

Omg, what a song and what a tribute to PF. Had never heard this song before but it left me thinking couple things. Was this the first time that they perform this song, did Tarja knew that this was extra song when she can take breath and change her clothes? Because Tuomas is so genious this sound that this song was goodbye song to Tarja. Lyrics match so perfect to that... When everything was so better and perfect than its today and so... And your reactions are allways perfect, thanks for that also :-)

There can't be a versus of this song, because they are both pretty amazing and you can prefer one or the other depending on the days mood. One has a hearth brake for humanity, the other is an anguish battle cry for humanity. So it will each appeal to us for different reasons.
And well, the compositions is just killer as well as the nightwish-fication arrangements.
I love both songs equally, though tend to lean more on NW version because the metal sound and Marko's voice appeal more to my usual state of mind.
And let's not forget about Emppu, Jukka and Tuomas, they all take the cake with that performance ❤️
LOL regarding Floor's growl. And you can see different live versions (the nightwish cruise, Mexico, or Wembley), and you can see and listen to the growl, but unless you acknowledge she's the one growling, your mind will try to tell you that's Marko (singing and growling at the same time because why not 🤣), and you might think it's a recorded chorus from the backtrack or something. But once you acknowledge it's Floor and you see her growling, it's just mind blowing rocking magic LOL
