Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here in 2005, at Helsinky, Finland, in the "End Of An Era" concert, on October 21. In this one the vocals were made by Marco Hietala, the bass singer of the band . They sang the cover while the main female singer of the band, then Tarja Turunen, change her outfit backstage.
As I could see, you really appreciated the high level of musicianship of all band members, the powerful vocals and charisma of Marco Hietala.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction (and your 2nd experience with this band as you said), it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile).
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

You are going to explore Nightwish more? Ok, I subbed, that's going to be interesting. That rabbit hole is very very deep and you ain't heard nothing yet. Marko does sing quite often, but usually not in the lead role. The concert where this was played was aptly called "End of an Era" and it was the last one with their female lead singer Tarja. To get a glimpse of her (and witness the last time she sung a song with Nightwish) look at "Wish I had an Angel" from the End of an Era concert. Or, if you happen to like Phantom of the Opera, they did a cover in that concert, too.

@broaction, I’m a lifelong Pink Floyd fan (since the 70s) but honestly my favorite version is this version by Nightwish, but to be honest since I discovered Nightwish they’ve become my all time favorite band. Try Ghost Love score from the epic Wacken 2013 concert and you’ll be blown away with the band and their lead singer Floor Jansen. Then there’s Song of Myself , Ghost River, Romanticide, Dark Chest of Wonders, Everdream, Storytime , all epic all different.Their catalogue is impressive and vast. Prepare for the arrival of the Nightwish army. 🤟🤟✌️✌️🇨🇦

One of the few songs on which Marco takes the lead, since late 2012 it has been Floor Jansen who is the third and in my opinion best female singer. Marco sang this while the lead singer (Tarja) was changing her outfit. Watch anything from Wacken 2013 live performance to get an idea of the true Nightwish experience.

Great review of a very well done tribute to Pink Floyd's High Hopes. They are so different you will have no problem putting this in a playlist. Both versions are magical but with Nightwish, Marco's passionate vocals strike such an urgent, emotional chord with me. I too am a big fan of Pink Floyd and it is not a group I expect anyone to improve upon or even compliment well but this version Nightwish made their own.
While I think David Gilmour is a genius as a composer, Marco is just a much better singer and while I still appreciate the melancholic tone of the original, the dark angsty version of Nightwish fits my personal taste.

Evelyn here: If you have not yet listened to Nightwish, then the usual “entry drug” for newbies is Ghost Love Score, live, from the annual metal festival in Wacken, Germany. And then the normal progression is to go through several of the songs from that same concert from 2013. It was my own introduction to the genre of symphonic metal, and Nightwish blew me away. Ghost Love Score highlights the amazing voice and stage presence of Floor Jansen, a Dutch vocalist who has one of the best female voices on the planet right now. And it also is a great introduction to the genre of symphonic metal if you have not listened to it before.

That said, it's all about personal tastes and mood so I don't find meaningful playing the "Who's better" game: IMHO music is sharing, not competing for the first prize...

This was in 2005. Their original lead singer was offstage for a costume change and this song is actually being sung by their "backing" singer. Imagine that.

It's interesting to hear your reaction because so many of the reactors I've seen doing this have never heard the original PF version. I resisted listening to this myself for a while because I didn't want to hear any band desecrate Pink Floyd music with a "cover." Like Hendrix doing "All Along the Watch Tower," Johnny Cash doing "Hurt," or Janis Joplin doing "Me and Bobby McGee," there comes a time when another artist just does the original one better. The artist ends "owning" the song. I won't say Nightwish owns "High Hopes" now because I have not heard the album version, nor have seen them play this again in concerts since this End of an Era concert in, what, 2005? But I'll tell you this: this performance of High Hope is what I now hear in my head when thinking of the song. I'd rather hear this version now rather than the original.

The story goes that Jukka, the drummer, was suffering from migraine and seen here leaning over the drums, and at 3:04 Tuomas at the keyboard is nodding to the guitarist Emppu to go and check up Jukka, which he did and at 4:58 he jumps off the drum stage back to the floor

You've chosen an unusual path to Nightwish. Marco is not the usual lead singer (although in my opinion he could be). If you don't know Nightwish here's some background: They have had 3 lead singers. Tarja, Anette and Floor. (Floor being the most recent) Floor Jansen is a POWERHOUSE of a singer, shes absolutely amazing. You should checkout Ghost Love Score or Romanticide from Wacken 2013. you'll be blown away.
Also the guy singing is Marko, the bassist who is also the backup singer(which is an understatement) id even say second singer of nightwish! The man on the keyboard is Tuomas, he composes and writes 95% of his beautiful songs along side everyone in the band. and Emmpu is the guitarist, and Jukka is the man on the drums! (later replaced by Kai) and another member who comes out time to time is Troy, he plays Ulliean pipes and flute(i believe)

But if not, AFTER you react to No Quarter by Zeppelin, then check out the Tool cover. I am a die-hard Zeppelin fan...they are my favorite classic rock band, so I’m coming from the space of adoring No Quarter. But I also respect the hell out of Tool. Too many of my contemporaries are not willing to admit that there was allot of good music that came out after 1985 or so. Tool is a magnificent prog metal band, and their cover of No Quarter is a heavy metal cover. If you enjoy that vibe, you would love that cover.
