Looks like a monarch egg on the twinevine leaf above the caterpillar at 7:08
You are so right…I see it 🐛💛🐛💛🐛💛🐛💛
Love your reflections and the slow garden stroll 🌸🌸🌸
Thank you 🩵🦋💛🦋🩵🦋💛🦋🩵🦋💛🦋🩵🦋💛
Great video❤
Thank you 🩵🦋💛🦋🩵🦋💛🦋🩵🦋💛🦋🩵🦋💛
You have so many babies. This is beautiful.
Awe, thank you!!!! I really am concerned about running out of the Pipevine. I did order some from a new place, but it hasn’t shipped yet. They are in one gallon pots, but that could mean anything size wise for the actual plant.
Lol you are so funny! I hope the storm doesn't end up getting to bad. Must save the caterpillars! You Rock! Hey caterpillars lives matter, indeed. Stay safe thanks for the video
😂😂😂Thank you🥰🥰🥰
Susan, oh how I love how that mushroom opened up… what a surprise! Just like an umbrella😊 what amazing timing with the storm coming up…cute And prophetic. I love all your musings… keep them coming…. 🦋🐛🌸❤️
Will do, last I checked, the big mushroom was gone and there were 5 little ones. I’ll have to remember to look. 🩵🦋🩵🦋
I understand how difficult it is to leave eggs or baby caterpillars outside. It’s dangerous out there with predators and storms! I ❤️ caterpillars so much. Thank you for putting in perspective how we can’t save them all due to lack of host plants and nectar to feed too many. I try to leave them outside, but I get so disappointed when they vanish. Thanks for sharing your garden with us 😊
I know, it is a hard path to stay on. I am always tempted to go off roading and bring them all in. 😍😍😍🐛🐛🐛
Susan’s Butterfly Math 🎉 11:42 It’s not about saving one species it’s loss of habitat for plants and wildlife across the board. Loss of habitat is the reason I began developing sources of food and shelter in my small garden. Focusing on one species of butterflies turned into a huge challenge of sourcing enough food for all the caterpillars I was trying to help. In the long run the good intention became like a hamster running a wheel with no way off. So if we look at the big picture and a lot of people do a little bit we can make a difference in sustaining more pollinators that help provide food for us and other creatures. Thank you Susan for sharing your thoughts and your new math …once a teacher always a teacher 😊🌼🐛🦋
Yay!!!!!!! Well said, a lot of people doing a little bit can make a BIG difference!!!! I love this🩵🦋🩵🦋🩵🦋🩵🦋
I love your serious thoughts .... think a lot about things like that too. I hope we both always have questioning minds!
Yes…it is mind opening to look at things from a variety of angles. There is still so much about life on our planet that we don’t know. I find it all fascinating. 🩵🩵🦋🦋🐛🐛

🥰🥰🥰
It’s so thought-provoking to change the sentence to “ only 2% are SUPPOSED to survive” and to think of all the creatures that live off of the various stages of the butterfly. Oh, and I retired early from teaching, too! I LOVE to be working in my gardens in the morning and to wave at the school buses heading to school and know I don’t have to go!!! ❤ Thanks again for your amazing videos. Still have only seen a few butterflies here in southwestern PA.
“I don’t have to go” is exactly what I keep saying in my head to remind myself that I am retired. I am just so grateful to be free from all of that. I am glad you are free too. 💛🐛💛🐛💛🐛💛🐛. Have I already asked you where in Southwestern Pa you are?
@@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan I live in Pleasant Unity (isn’t that a great name for a town?) which is halfway between Greensburg and Latrobe and about an hour east of Pittsburgh.
I grew up in Pittsburgh, moved to Florida when I was 11. I have many great memories of the city and I am still a Steelers fan. 💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤
@@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan huge
Steeler fan here. They just had “Friday Night Lights” here at Latrobe stadium (that’s where I taught) and the Steelers played a game…huge crowd… I never go (lol… 😂 TOO MANY PEOPLE - I’d rather be in my garden) they practice everyday at St Vincent College near me! 🖤🐝💛🏈🐛🦋❤️
Oh wow!!! That is fabulous!!!!
I have had very few gulf frits this year. I have a large trellis with corky stem and maypop right outside my front window where I usually get to watch them. Recently I saw one and was so excited! Then I saw a wasp literally eat every egg that was deposited. The next day the same thing happened. I have built a feeding station for the wasps. I know, I know I'm supposed to like them too. Well I'm salty about it, lol. Looks like I'm going to need to bring some in in order to even get my 2%. I hope Debby doesn't do any damage.. Aug-Oct are my least favorite months in FL.
I hope Debby is the only one! Yes, raise your 4%.
Well I had two long days of work Saturday and Sunday but i finally had time to watch this video. It was very thought provoking with the way you emphasized certain parts. And I have more than four or five eggs of my guys in the greenhouse right now but that usually drops all the way down to three or less when all is said and done. The ants do a PHENOMENAL job of finding their way in and eating everyone but that’s how it’s supposed to be. Though I KIND of have 42 monarch caterpillars and I’m too invested in them now to tell them no sooo… We’re just gonna pretend I didn’t do this okay😂 Pretend I said 4-2.😂
Yes, 4-2, that’s what you said. 😂😂😂😂🦋🐛🦋🐛🦋🐛
The issue that you described with every single caterpillar surviving and affecting the balance of everything else, is exactly the problem that's going on with humans.
We're popping out TOO many babies and draining a lot of resources to get those babies' needs met!!!
More life creates more competition for resources.
We cut down forests, clear meadows, and drain aquatic habitats for spaces to build shelter and have places to grow food to sustain our growing population, driving everything else out.
Humans need to focus their energy on fixing the planet and maintaining balance, instead of popping out babies.
Once that is fixed, everything else will be fine because the competition for resources wouldn't be as intense.
I am finding more and more, in nature and in life, balance is everything. 💛🐛💛🐛💛🐛
Worried about you and hurricane Debbie! Do you think it will turn your way! Take care please
We are fine, still dealing with the rain bands, but nothing major. 🩵🩵🩵🦋🦋🦋
I can't wait to see what you do with your yard! Converting that entire space into a butterfly garden this fall is gonna be must see tv for me. Lol. Are you going to sit down and really plan it out since it's up front to be more ornamental and nicely layered or nah? Lol.
You know, I debate about that. I’m not really a planner, but I do want to purposefully plant it. I just have to figure out how to do that without a plan. Honestly, once I start turning the soil, the garden will begin to design itself in my mind. I am thinking about making it exclusively native.
@@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan
Suggestion: Plant Withlakoochee Walter’s Viburnum, Simpson’s Stopper, Sweetbay Magnolia, Red Bay, Upright Yupon, Marlberry, Wild Lime, and whatever other small trees & shrubs.
Since they’ll be babies, plant flowers in between. Personally, I’d include non native Pentas & Mystic Blue Spires..
You really need two Mystic Blue Spires. You’d love them.
@@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan Whatever you decide to do I'm sure it will be fabulous.
💛💛💛🥰🥰🥰
@katiecannon8186 I’m already thinking about some of those. 😉😉
What’s the lighting where you Zebra Longwings like to lay eggs?
Shade
Did you loose power. I lost if for about six hours last night. I just didn’t think we would.
No, thank goodness. I’m glad you got it back. 🩵🦋🩵🦋 Let this be the last big storm for this year. 🐛🐛🐛
