- In this butterfly gardening video, we are unboxing some new host plants I ordered from the Joyful Butterfly. Then we up pot some adorable little Lyre Leaf sage seedlings, and we check in on my new native Aster plants. I discovered some new packets of zinnia seeds that I set down with the mail and we get some of them planted and try a new lighting method. Finally, we follow some female butterflies laying eggs in my garden and we rescue a misplaced butterfly egg. It’s always an adventure in my butterfly garden.
There is always something exciting going on in my butterfly garden and I’m happy to share it with you.

Big uptick in butterflies the last couple days. Tons of gulf fritillary up to like 8-10 at a time. a few red spotted purple here and there in the back, a few cloudless sulphur up front on cardinal vine, one lady in the back, one buckeye in front on butterfly bush. It's finally happening right when I have to move out. Sigh...Oh well.
How soon do you have to move?
Oh that Pipevine was gorgeous, can't wait to see if you get eggs.👀🦋
I do hope I get more eggs…I think I probably will. We shall see. 🩵🩵🩵🐛🐛🐛

Hi Susan! Greetings from the boot heel of Will County in northeast Illinois.
2024 Butterfly Report
We have had great weather conditions but a very frustrating butterfly season. The spring was mild and wet, summer was warm with average rainfall. My swamp milkweed and dill plants did very well but did not produce caterpillars. From June 15-Aug 15 only two monarch butterflies and zero easteren black swallowtails were produced. My sister and I have done some brainstorming on our poor results and here are some of our conclusions:
1. We had a heavy infestation of aphids on our swamp milkweed plants. Aphids release a secretion called "honey dew" that leaves a sticky coating on the swamp milkweed plants. This sticky coating deters any egg laying and can kill the plant.
2. From July 15-Aug 15 the annual black death/green ooze returned wiping out any chance of collecting monarch caterpillars.
3. A new pest has reared its ugly head namely the Chinese "stink bug". I personally witnessed a stink bug sucking the life out of a 2nd instar monarch caterpillar.
Not all is bad news. We have had a slight rebound in our fall butterfly fortunes. I consider September 1 as the start of our fall and was pleasantly surprised at finding monarch caterpillars on our swamp milkweed. But being so late in the season what am I going to feed them? Well this is where your wonderful "Butterfly Gardening Inspirations" channel paid off. I remembered your use of organza bags. I went on amazon ordered the biggest organza bags I could find (16"x24") and placed them on every branch where there was a monarch caterpillar. Did it work? Yes, 100%. I harvested 11 chrysalis from the organza bags and brought them into my enclosure. I had one beautiful monarch butterfly eclose on Sept 9 with 10 more that should eclose in the next 7-10 days.Yay!
The eastern black swallowtail (ebs) presented another new challenge. The dill plants were producing ebs caterpillars but once they reached 2nd-3rd instar the caterpillars would disappear. What the heck was going on? One day out in the yard I discovered the problem. I noticed a bunch of small birds (finches, sparrows, wrens, etc.) in my dill patch. I might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but I figured these small birds were the culprits. Again I used the organza bags and they worked perfectly. I currently have two ebs chrysalis in my enclosure with five more ebs caterpillars in organza bags. If all goes well I should have ebs eclosing in mid-April 2025.
That about sums up my 2024 butterfly season. Frustrating yes but very educational as well. Butterfly raising can be challenging but once you release a beautiful perfect butterfly it is all worth it
My 2024 butterfly season would have been a disaster but for Butterfly Gardening Inspirations.
Susan, I again thank you for all your hard work you put into your channel. You are a blessing to the world of butterflies and as always let's all have a grrrreat Butterfly Gardening Inspirations day!!!
It is so good to hear from you. I love reading your updates, even when they aren’t filled with exciting news. The one great thing about raising swallowtails is that they overwinter with you, so you are almost guaranteed to have some in the spring. Unlike the migrating Monarchs whose travel patterns can be effected by so many different variables. What other swallowtails are native to your area? Have you considered branching out to raise more swallowtail species??
@@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan Great news! Our late year monarchs came through. Using the organza bags we were able to release 10 beautiful monarch butterflies for the trip south. We also have 7 ebs caterpillars on the bronze fennel which are protected by organza bags. The ebs will start eclosing from mid-April thru mid-May 2025.
As far as branching out to other swallowtails I am just too old to do it. Due to health concerns I have to curtail and simplify my activities. My health concerns are not life threatening but are restricting. But as long as I can walk and think I will do my best to help butterflies. After all is there a bigger thrill than hand releasing a butterfly and watching it fly into the sky? I haven't found one.
I will contact you on how the ebs caterpillars do. Until then let's all have a fabulous Butterfly Gardening Inspirations day!!!
Oh, that is such great news. There is definitely nothing like watching a new butterfly take flight. 🩵🦋🩵🦋🩵🦋
I live in Georgia in zone 8a or 8b depending on how cold our winter is. Now in September the majority of my nectar plants are pretty much spent except for my Mexican Sunflowers and Zinnias. My chaste tree shurb is reblooming sparsely and the butterfly bushes and sedums are blooming
The Mexican Sunflowers bloom usually till the frist hard frost. I've seen different butterflies starting in Mid July swallow tails, gulf fritterlys, yellow sulphurs, queens,an occasional pipevine. But no Monarch butterflies yet. Early fall of 2022 had monarch caterpillars feeding on butterfly weed. I don't know if they surrived or where eaten by predators. I didn't see any monarch butterflies this Spring and I haven't seen any so this month on their fall migration.
You know, there are so many factors that affect the Monarch travel routes. I think you could still see some, hopefully. They should be coming through Georgia late Sept to early October. Your garden sounds fabulous.
What butterflies do you see visiting your "Porter Weed Plant" for nectar?
Monarchs, Sulphurs, Gulf Fritillaries, Zebra Longwings, Longtailed skippers, Horace’s Duskywings…off the top of my head. The Porterweed they love is the tall, nonnative kind.
WOW! Thank you for answering my question.
You are so welcome!!!🩵🐛🩵🐛🩵🐛🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Is an example of the non native that they love the coral color porterweed?
Yes
I’m hoping your vine on your screen has 5 leaves…Virginia creeper has 5, poison ivy has 3. Be careful 😉
Oooh yes, great point. The leaves closer to the bottom have 5. 🩵🦋🩵🦋🩵🦋
