Hopefully this comment posts😂. UA-cam has been bad about that recently. It should be worth noting that while bleeding heart isn’t documented as a host for them, the giant leopard moths (being ever so polyphagous) will munch on them if they happen to stumble across them before continuing to move on. My grandma had one on hers this summer for three days before crawling to some other plant. Also, perhaps you could try and find some beach cabbage (Scaevola taccada) as it is a host plant for the great southern white, which I know on occasion stops by your garden. I’m growing tropical milkweed up here in my greenhouse this winter because I’ve been seeing incredibly early female monarchs these past three years. I’ve seen a female on April 15, 2022, April 3rd 2023, and April 20th, 2024. And our ever so lovely common milkweed comes up in mid to late May most years. So I’ve taken it upon myself to have some ready for the early travelers by growing it indoors through the winter (please don’t kill me😂)

Oh, no worries, I am definitely not the milkweed police! I am glad your comment posted. I have been hearing about that from others too. I would love to have moth caterpillars all over my bleeding heart. They would do a fabulous job keeping it in check. I was literally just thinking about my little leopard moth caterpillar, and wishing I had another one.

I went to the park and found some new native plants I hadn't seen before. I discovered Liatris elegans (elegant gayfeather) and Pycnanthemum virginianum (Virginia mountain mint). I've discovered a lot of species the last 2 years of this hobby. I've collected a bunch of seeds of local ecotypes recently and will be collecting as many as I can this fall. I have big plans for a native plant nursery. I also recently discovered Andropogon glomeratus (bushy bluestem) that looks really cool for a grass. Not gonna lie I feel like these should be common plants at the garden center. So many ornamental natives.

Exactly, there are so many beautiful native plants that NEED to be in garden centers. Your native plant nursery will be amazing.

It was probably ready to pupate if it was huge. They burrow down in the soil below the plant. Keep your eyes open, you might see it again someday as a beautiful moth. Now, I have to check my beauty berry. 😂😂😂😉😉😉

I have hunted for a Sassafras EVERYWHERE. Even native nursery in Tallahassee and one in Alabama. If you hear of anyone getting them, let me know. I called Sweetbay and The Nectary

Check Joyful Butterfly everyday. They will get them in and sell out fast…so make it a habit to check daily and hopefully you will get lucky. 🩵🦋🩵🦋
