Arrogant pilot Ignores ATC & almost causes a MIDAIR!

- A SkyWest regional jet (SKW3417) was inbound from the north on a left downwind to land on runway 29. A Marchetti (N58YF) was cleared to takeoff on runway 29 and requested an early turnout. While on the downwind, the Marchetti was cautioned to stay clear of the landing SkyWest jet in left traffic. The Marchetti pilot then offered to make a 90 degree left turn to cross north of the runway centerline and avoid a conflict with the landing jet, and the tower controller instructed the Marchetti to do so. However, the Marchetti only turned about 40 degrees left instead of 90, never crossed to the north side of the centerline and then turned back on course that would take him even further south of the centerline without informing the tower. The tower controller noticed this worsening traffic conflict and ordered the Marchetti to turn north immediately to avoid a potential collision with the regional jet. The Marchetti pilot ignored this instruction and continued on his downwind course, eventually responding to the tower that he had the traffic in sight and felt there was no conflict.

"you didn't ask" was the last straw 😂😂😂😂
"You didn't ask..!" - she cracked me up :)
As a student solo when I did mine, I added "85H is student solo and I would like to do 3 landings to full stop for ppl" after i reported the weather code. Gave the controller all the info he needed to help me get my box checked. Thanks KTTD.
In my opinion, what stood out most in the recording was the Marchetti pilot's arrogant attitude. He seemed to believe that because he personally assessed there was no conflict, it was acceptable to ignore ATC instructions. Even when informed by the tower that he was still south of the centerline, he didn't show any remorse and simply responded with a dismissive "Oookay!" This lack of humility was quite striking to me
Should’ve been a phone-call.
“You didn’t ask” 😃😃
didn't ask if she had to pee pee either.
Two very different and very dangerous pilots
Indeed
"Are you a student?"
"Uuuhh, yeah, like TOTALLY! I'm like flying a plane and everything. It's like sooooooo coooollll."
I can so hear it in my head 😂
Sounds like this is her student pilot solo (3 TOs and LNDGs) which means her CFI is probably listening. Hopefully he doesn’t let her fly solo again without some remedial radio training.
@@martinbrookesmusicshe wanted remedial radio training, but he didn’t ask 🤣
Hoooooly cow, who signed off on the girl to go solo?
that is a very big problem these days it seems...students getting signed off for solo long before they are actually ready and competent enough to handle everything...a lot of multi-tasking occurs inside a cockpit
@@jsarkozy Like someone else commented, some of these recordings are ancient, so "these days" is meaningless. That said, I remember my first solo, and my CFI sat in with me for 3 rounds, then taxi to ramp, he got out, and off I went. He sat there silently but wanted to make sure I was ready. If he would have even had to interfere or comment once, it would have been "not ready".
Three six bravo , I have a number for your CFI to call.
That student was like totally not ready for her solo, uh-kay. Maybe her instructor was just trying to let nature take its course.
How in tf did the Marchetti not get a phone number?
Very generous and kind controller indeed
in some countries it would have been mandatory to report this.
Wow!!! The second pilot needs more time with an instructor or a more seasoned pilot (aka a mentor) practicing radio calls.
"You didn't ask"...WTH??? Quite unprofessional.
May I suggest a "Pilot Communication" course from John and Martha King?
“Frequency change approved… but wait for the number to call.”
OMG, the worst prepared student solo ever…..
36B is a future UAL pilot for sure 🤣🤣🤣
Guess a pilot can do whatever they feel like while airborne within a Class D…wow.
No more “have a number for ya to call…”
Uh....you didn't ask? Wow. The me me me generation has now infiltrated aviation. As a student, I would have never had the balls to say something like that.
I will have to agree with you on this topic.... Been flying for 40 years and the things I've heard on the radio's these days is appalling. From the childish crap all over guard frequency to things like this.
You guys know that these are old and regurgitated recordings from years ago right? Maybe if you were from a superior generation you’d have figured that out. The recordings are also incomplete, and the plane’s locations are not depicted accurately in the visual graphics. (Definitely not the student pilot one anyway).
One of the things that gets pilots killed is their unwillingness to stand up to ATC. It burns me up when I hear a pilot having an emergency the requests to return to the field. WRONG! Just return to the field, then TELL them what you’re doing. Or worse, when ATC gives dangerous instructions and pilots just blindly comply.
I also see it here when ATC told her to change frequencies. She should have immediately said “unable”, but I’ll give her a pass as a student on her first solo. There was no need for ATC to make the comment that would have been nice to know. Her comment was perfect, because without saying it directly, she told him “shut up and do your job. This ain’t about you, it’s about getting this plane safely back on the ground!”
@@skydvrboyI hope you are not in aviation, because what you think is ridiculous. As pilots, we work together with ATC. They are our teammates. They usually have the bigger picture.
@@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 I’ve been in aviation for 30+ years now. Other than that I don’t disagree with anything you said. They usually have a better idea of the big picture, I’d even say they almost always have a better idea of the big picture than the pilot. But that’s irrelevant in this situation or to what I said.
They are also our teammates, with the sole purpose of making sure every flight ends safely. A good teammate would never blindly follow another teammate’s instructions. Doing so in this situation (changing frequency) would have put this student in a very dangerous situation.
Likewise, when one teammate sees a dangerous situation develop (emergency), he would never ask for permission to take the necessary action.
Blindly following ATC, is a perfect example of the dangerous attitude of resignation we were all taught about in flight school. If you can’t put your big boy pants on and stand up to ATC when the need arises, you have no business being pilot in command of an aircraft.
Holy shit
"Not in sight to runway 36, cleared to land"?
I'm confused by that....
If ATC can’t see you visually, they can still clear you to land if there’s no other conflicts
Why am I imagining a 17yo girl, chewing gum and texting while taxing?
Did 36B enter runway without permission?
On the 2nd situation the pilot noted she was taxing for departure but she did not note her destination. ATC didn't ask, so I assumed she was on a flight plan or they knew from some other reason. I am not saying ATC was as fault in any way, because based on the radio skills and airfield awareness of the pilot, she was not ready to be communicating with ATC imo. My question though is if ATC didn't know she wanted to do circuits, then where did he think she was going? For separation purposes how do you clear an aircraft for departure without knowing what direction they are heading (or want to head) once airborne?? BTW, when she said that "you didn't ask" she should have got a phone number imo. Not for being written up, but so that someone could explain to her how and why she was unprepared for basic ATC ground instructions.
I disagree on the phone number bit. Her instructor SHOULD have been listening on frequency and taking notes on things to coach her on. That said, if the instructor didn’t realize she wasn’t ready to solo, are we to expect he was diligent enough to do his job and listen in, etc.?
It's amazing that, considering the low bandwidth of the transmissions and backgound noise, you can still hear the entitlement and arrogance of the female pilot.
🙃🙃
Women 😂😂😂
🙂🙂
Uncalled for. The first entitled prick who *really* caused a dangerous situation was not a woman. Probably thought he was a Real Man, too! An unprepared student, nervous as hell, that's the CFI's fault. Who, statistically speaking, was probably also a man.
“Uhh you didn’t ask?” Girl get back with your CFI 🫠
The female student pilot is obviously not well prepared for operating at a towered airport. Her instructor needs remedial training.
