That was the scariest part for me: "don't know if you need a readback on this or not"? How can this man have an IFR license and somehow think that saying "yep that routing is loaded k tkx bye" is somehow appropriate? Exact readback are mandatory on clearances, both VFR and IFR.
Having a parachute on your plane is awesome. Why ridicule something that saves likes. Those things have saved upwards of 500 lives since they were invented...
I’ll add something further - if you happen to be housed at the same field as him, please get your FSDO involved. I know how crappy you’d feel doing that - but the rest of us in the air and those on the ground under where he flies will thank you for it. The guy needs some remedial help before he flies again.
It's clear this guy is trying to readback his instructions via his FMS as he's including all the fixes along the Victor airways. That's precisely why you need to write your clearance down and not rely on the constructed route of flight displayed on your FMS.
it's also clear that once he gets in the air, he won't give a crap about his clearance and instead do whatever his toys tell him to. I've got inlaws that have been coming to the house for twenty years and STILL don't know how to get here, but instead follow their GPS every single time.
Coincidently, I started listening to this in Norwood, MA as I started a car trip. It ended just as I pulled into my destination in Hickory, NC. Thanks for the company, ATC AUDIO!
I’m surprised that after he was cleared for takeoff he didn’t request taxi back to the fuel pumps to top off his tanks, due to the excessive fuel burn between start up and receiving taxi clearance!
Well, no. Ok, this was a longer clearance than I've ever had, but she warned him it was long. He should have grabbed pencil and paper and copied it down and not tried to rely on his Garmin. One day they'll get clearances via data link, but for now, good old fashioned pencil and notepad should always be available. Scary to think what happens if he gets his arrival ATIS and correction to inbound routing.
His 1st readback sounded like a high school student not paying no damn attention to the teacher when the teacher called him out to repeat what was lectured... ...
I suspect that happened is that he is using a EFB program like ForeFlight. They will email you the clearance (but final clearance is what ATC actually gives you). That's how he knew that there was a major modification to his flight plane. He then entered this into his GPS. HOWEVER, the GPS will often add several waypoints along the airways. For example: BOSOX V1 GRAYM becomes BOSOX GRIPE GRAYM, with a V1 box around it. He didn't know where to start / stop the official readback. This is just a guess though, who knows what the actual issue was.
If he were making an omelette he would have made a cake with that first readback, dude got like three things correct then added more shit into the mix.

No one should be issued an instrument rating that can’t even copy an IFR clearance. Since the pilot was issued a clearance he is completely unfamiliar with, how does he know he’s got enough fuel to fly the assigned clearance? That clearance would be a great time for an instructor to take his garmin away and see if he can plot the route on a map to determine fuel requirement manually. Technology is great until it fails.
What's worse? Him not being able to write down a complicated clearance? Or him asking the controller on how to fly a SID? Or him doing a runway incursion? Or him not knowing where runway 10 is? Good thing he's got CAPS

When he questioned whether or not to give a read back, I knew this was going south quickly. With such a complex IFR, a read back should have been a no-brainer.
As a young Air Force meteorologist, pilot weather briefings were a pretty significant part of my duties. NO ONE took off without me signing off on their DD form 175-1. Over years, I learned almost all of the waypoints around my state, and would reference these on my weather briefings. The pilots really appreciated this.
I've never been anywhere near aviation except as a passenger, and I can too easily see myself in that pilot's confusion and fumbling. Not good under pressure, especially from an annoyed Bostoner. I was half expecting his flight to be cancelled by the controller.
I assume ATC doesn't have much control over being able to stop a pilot from flying, but why didn't the controller report his "possible pilot deviation" for his runway incursion on taxi? Wouldn't the FAA have reviewed this recording to review the runway incursion and then most likely investigated further?
this truly wasn't too hard to copy down. Perhaps this guy needs to do some instrument refresher training flights with a CFII to build his skills up a little bit. If he can't competently write this down then I seriously question whether he can competently execute the flight safely.

The controller is awesome for having that kind of patience. Does it ever come to it when the controller has to say “you’re not flying” ?? You’re a hazard to yourself and to everyone around you. Then the FAA should make this pilot get a flight review. Just saying. This is a fast complex plane he is flying but his skill level doesn’t match it.
When I was trying to get my license, I remember a quote from Clint Eastwood's "Magnum Force", "A man's gotta know his limitations". Those words made me contemplate my own limitations and prompted me to not be a nuisance to other pilots and ATCs. I thought the world was safer without me in the cockpit. Unfortunately after watching this video, I realize that there are many out there that should have taken Clint's advice. From my perspective, to all of you pilots and ATCs, you're welcome.
Has he even flown before? The problem started when he clearly didn't write the route down. He was confirming what he had loaded already. I doubt he wrote it down the second time - or third. He was loading on the fly.

I used to always have a laminated clearance card so I knew I wasn’t missing anything. Get your head out of the electronics and write the shit down. No way this guy passed a real instrument check ride.

Even the way he questioned whether he needed to read back the IFR clearance because it was in his FMS. Then, when he did read it back he added a lot of GPS waypoints that ATC never gave him in the initial IFR clearance. Then a couple of taxi errors!!!! He should have taxied back to the hangar and shut it down. If this pilot checked the IM SAFE acronym I would hope he would have realized he was NOT ready to go flying on this particular day.

This is why “paper charts” are necessary BEFORE you try to load the GARMIN/FMS. NY Airspace is tough.

I fly out of KOWD as a student pilot, and I know that controller. Listen at 10:50. The controller is a man. I was laughing the entire time.
