I doubt anyone born in the 90s and 2000s would be the hardcore anime and manga fans of today without Toonami it introduced me to Dragon Ball Z Naruto Yu Yu Hakusho and all the other classics. This amazing block is just another example of how the modern Cartoon Network will never measure up to the iconic CN channel from my childhood.
Pretty sure most people born in the 2000s were in preschool or Kindergarten when Toonami went under in 2008... (unless you count the 2012 revival, but if not, it's more of a 1990-2000 baby thing)
There was one time Tom paid tribute to C. Martin Croaker, who was the voice of Moltar and Zorak on Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. It was a great way to pay tribute to the original Toonami host.
I remember at the tail end of living with my mom seeing Toonami pop up again, seeing shows like Dragon Ball Super, Fire Force, and Assassination Classroom and really liking them. One of these days I gotta delve into anime again, it's just hard to do when you're constantly working.
29:50 I imagine he was always capable of swearing, just didn't wanna do it in front of the kids, but now seeing as those kids have grown up, he turned off the child safety filter.
I've been with Toonami 2004 - 2014. Ten years of late night anime goodness. But as I got older, got a paying job, and could afford streaming apps, sadly, it was time for me to move on. Thank you Toonami, for being with me up til my adulthood. And may you bless the new gen, the same way you blessed me. 😊
Sorry you had to get off the ride, brother. I’ve been with Toonami since the 90s,and I’m still here….I’ll keep riding for you and anyone else that couldn’t stay …for the #ToonamiFaithful 😎👍
@@metal_gear_rayquaza8914 Hope one day before it’s too late you’ll hop back on the Toonami Train while it’s still around again, but until then like I said,I’ll keep riding for you and anyone else, brother! ✌️
as a kid i only watched Naruto, Zatch Ball and RaveMaster I dont stay up late i wake up early for the early morning Inuyasha. 2004 to 2008 maybe two episodes of inuyasha every morning.
I haven't had cable for a few years now, but I still check Toonami's schedule every week. I may not be able to watch it anymore, but I still stay up to date with what they're airing.
I discovered Toonami in around 2016 or 2017 when I was in a mental institution after an altercation with a family member, I discovered such anime as Dragonball Z, Dragonball Super, Naruto, MHA, and so many more that I'll probably imagine later
despite we didn't have toonami in my country, i find discussing the channel history so fascinating as it shows how it spread the anime culture in the us. heck, i think it even influenced channels that aired anime in other countries (my country included) somehow as i found some shows that aired on toonami got popular to the point that also aired at similar dates in the channel of my country. really nice and informative video. thanks so much for your dedicated work conner. 💖☺️👍
This brought up a weird formative memory for me. I remember there being one night as a kid where I felt too sick to fall asleep, so my dad just turned on cartoon network. It was during the Toonami block, with the Big O playing. It was the only episode of the show I watched and the only thing I remember about it was the giant robot and its cockpit.
Toonani was totally rad I never watched so much like Cartoon Network but oh man it was a good introduction to classical DBZ and Sailor Moon! in the 90s
Like many others, Toonami had a hand in introducing me to anime, I like how no matter what show Toonami aired, they were able to make an awesome promo to get you interested in that show and having Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime narrate the promo was the icing on the cake
I would love to see the other Toonami shows get mentioned like Megas XLR, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe 2002, Harley Quinn TAS, Transformers Unicron Trilogy, Beast Wars, the Real Adventures of Johnny Quest, and the others that were Western animation.
23:03 I refuse to believe this is the same Tom, the real one is canonically out there somewhere, this is the evil... well I would say doppelganger but that would be a horrible insult. 26:16 There you have it, 3 is back, he's just been there the entire time getting polished up a bit...
4:36 love sailor moon ! Plus I have all 5 seasons on DVD and complete seasons 1-3 on Blu Ray sets. Dbz , Gundam, robotech , tenchi muyo and many others down the line
when i was younger, id sometimes go to toonami (mainly because cartoon network had just gone off air), i only remember the bumpers, but not the game reviews nor the anime's
Perfect nostalgia video for my Sunday morning while I play Smash bros and eat breakfast. I’m 41 now and grew up with the OG toonami and wow has it been a trip. Bang.
I started watching anime on Adult Swim in 2010 or so. I remember staying up at my grandparents' house watching adult swim on a crazy low volume when I first saw it. The first one I really remember was Durarara!!, and I only really knew it as 'the anime block' well into the Toonami revival because I was literally 9 years old when it came back on air. The two ones that I remember best though, those were Casshern Sins and Deadman Wonderland. I had the bell episode of Casshern Sins burned into my brain like a core memory, and I watched so much of Deadman Wonderland. I only even found out what Casshern was because apparently Wikipedia has an entire page dedicated to the history of their programming schedule. After that, it was history. Soon I started torrenting subbed episodes on my ipod touch, as you did back in the day. Lots of memories on those bootleg anime streaming apps
the 4kids version of one piece gave us the one piece rap, and the person who sang it, shawn conrad made a new version of the one piece rap that adds the rest of the crew and its on his UA-cam channel
I remember watching so many shows from Toonami growing up. I remember coming home from school, turning on the TV, and checking to see what show Toonami was playing. Toonami was a cornerstone of anime for so many people. Thank you for being a part of our childhood, Toonami.
This video was so bittersweet. I loved Toonami growong up. It's how I got into anime mostly as a kid and I still tooned in into my early 20s while I still had sattelite tv. It definitely introduced my to a few of my favorite anime and I loved staying up late smoking a bowl and watching everything.
Inuyasha is one of my favorite Isekai. The new world is sublime, the demons have differents designs and are scary like the birds with giant bodies or cute like Shippo and Kirara, the music is excellent and all the openings too; the action is good, the characters are likable. I love Kouga the wolf guy, he's loyal and vrave plus it's funny when him and Inuyasha are grumpy 😂The romance is well developped. It's cute to see Kagome and Inuyasha slowly liking each other, fighting together too. One of the moments i dislike is near the end, before episode 100 i think. Kagome and Inuyasha were alone in her room and about to have their first kiss then her brother arrives, interrupt them. I was so angry at the kid i almost insult him! At least the couple could kiss later but that part was still frustrating.
Inuyasha is definitely great, just one thing though... it was time travel to the ancient past, NOT another world, thus not an Isekai, which translates to "other world".
Sailor Moon (1995-2000; 2024-present) and Dragon Ball Z (1996-2003; 2005-2008) were the first two Japanese anime franchises that I grew up from my childhood years in the mid 1990s and early 2000s. Those were good times watching Toonami alongside with my young brother.
Im a young teen, who's grown up in the anime spectrum where its sorta big, and with the Advent of streaming, it's sorta sad we won't have cool bumpers like this, I always like to check with Tom, (if I can), most Saturdays while I'm not into the huge shonens they air, it's still pretty cool, having any anime on tv at all, (and yes you nailed food wars right on the head), but I appreciate a block like toonami, for introducing so many millennials and some Early gen Z's to anime, which is awesome because of them we have it in such a Major spectrum today, I do kinda wanna wish I was little older before we cancelled cable because toonami seems awesome and the few times I've caught it, I've really enjoyed it.
Toonami for me came in a part of my life where I thought real life was going to break me down but anytime I watched it I became more confident and I'm so happy that it's still here teaching lessons to the Next Generation. I always keep this quote with me... " Believe in yourself and create your own destiny don't fear failure."
Cardcaptor Sakura was a WEIRD choice for a show, since it really leans into the "Shoujo" part of "Mahou Shoujo". They wanted an action series, but they decided the better option out of Sailor Moon, Pretty Cure, and "the show by the ladies that made Kakyoin lay an egg" was Sailor Moon and the Jojo fanfiction girls. I think they might have even had the manga out, if by piracy or otherwise, so fans of Cardcaptors that liked the edited down version that decided to read ahead in the manga were going to be in for one hell of a shock at the actual focus of the series in the manga. Pretty Cure also has an appeal that would have been similar to Power Rangers, with cast refreshes every season. Pretty Cure would have generally been a better choice, marketing-wise and overall, especially since they already had a deal with Toei animation for Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon.
I'm happy Tooami is still going after all these years the best night time streaming service ever. I don't watch Television no more, but at times i miss Tom and his crew.
When ronnin warriors came one the channel, I was happy. you never got to see more then like 20 episodes in a row before it would start over when it first came to the states on TV in 1993. I LOVE THE G-FORCE version for battle of the planets. This is also where I found which is now my favorite Anime, Knights of the Zodiac..aka Saint Seiya. Can we get Pegasus Seiya for DEATH BATTLE PEOPLE?????????????
Yeah, which I was amazed they didn't do a separate version that kept the adult themes in and put it on Adult Swim. Though I think it's clear that the 2014 reboot would be on Adult Swim for a fact because damn, that shit was dark!
Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin are 2 of my top 10 favorite anime of all time with Yu Yu being my absolute favorite period. I plan to get multiple tattoos related to it. Toonami really made my childhood
You probably know this by now, but Toonami was originally a weekday afternoon, after-school block of programming. They branched out first with ‘Midnight Run,’ then into Saturday mornings with ‘Rising Sun’. The Saturday evening block that eventually came about was adult swim anime, before eventually being rebranded Toonami as well.

Kid Danger: *wearing his mighty pup movie outfit* it maybe my love of Recuse Bots from the Transformers line of tv shows, but, why does Tom 5 SOUND like Heatwave?!
i remember watching toonami for the first time when tom 4 was around and i actually enjoyed tom 4 it was a fun time especially it was my introduction to naruto
yo this is such a good video. I was 4 years old when toonami started so I’ve seen a lot and it really reminded me of how I spent my free time as a kid haha
You missed the whole early part of toonami, where it was a mid afternoon weekday block. Mortar hosted it and it was awesome to come home from school and see it
When Toonami first aired in Australia in 2001, the first four shows it had were Dragon Ball Z (Which was up to the Funimation dub of the Android Saga at the time) Cardcaptors, Gundam Wing and Batman Beyond. Other shows i would watch would be Zoids, the 2003 Astro Boy Series, 2002 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Transformers Armada, Transformers Energon, Duel Masters, Pokemon Advanced, Hamtaro and One Piece. Toonami stopped airing in Australia in 2006, a year before Tom 4 appeared in America. However, during Toonami’s final years airing in Australia, I never got a glimpse of Tom 3. In fact I didn’t even know Tom 3 existed until learning about him when researching Cartoon Netwrok Fusion Fall. I watched the Total Immersion Events featuring Tom 5 and Tom 6 on UA-cam after discovering the sequels to the Intruder while looking up the Intruder on UA-cam. Since then I’m been keeping an eye on Tom and Sara’s adventures over the years and it was during my research for the block I learned of Tom 4’s existence.
I watched Toonami almost religiously. Why do I remember it being on weekday afternoons and not targeted towards adults like he say throughout the video? Around 2004-2005 it switched to Saturday evenings. But late night blocks before then were either adult swim or the more violent/mature anime like Inuyasha and FMA. That was never aired during the day. Yu Yu Hakisho was even aired late night originally before coming to the afternoon block with more censorship. It wasn’t until around 2007 when Toonami was ONLY late night.
Here I am watching this 7 months later where Toonami got rebooted with Rewind. They have Dragon Ball Kai, Naruto and the VIZ dub of Sailor Moon ( best version I think). I do wish I got into anime earlier so I could see Fullmetal Alchemist airing.
Toonami was the best block of action cartoons there ever was, is and will be. I remember watching this religiously, I watched 98% of the shows and loved 98% of the shows. When Toonami came back, I also ecstatic and watched it until, 2016-ish and that's when I fell off cable.
Wow I'm surprised it's still going thats amazing!!! I was around Toonami during the Gundam Era, and my absolute favorite times with Toonami was when One Piece, Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, and Bleach were the big ones to watch at the time.

But here in Brazil, Cartoon Network and Toonami showed the anime Knights of the Zodiac Saint Seiya from 2003-2007
Happy Thanksgiving!
i,m getting real angry you have not done the power rangers turbo video
Fun fact: Cyborg 009 was created by Shotaro Ishinomori, the creator of Kamen Rider and SUPER SENTAI!

Yep. Give this man a history lesson.

Toonami aired during the week too
Tenchi, yu yu hakusho, dbz, etc. Childhood was lit
Hakusho
@@chaosqrow634 Good catch lol Typed too fast 🤣
i love this guy's content-
Here I am watching this 7 months later where Toonami got rebooted with Rewind. They have Dragon Ball Kai, Naruto and the VIZ dub of Sailor Moon ( best version I think). I do wish I got into anime earlier so I could see Fullmetal Alchemist airing.
We need “The Weird World of Chimera Ant ArC”
Oh god no!! 😂😂😂 it was SO dark 😨😨😨
Why do I hear Tank Dempsey?
Toonami was the best block of action cartoons there ever was, is and will be.
I remember watching this religiously, I watched 98% of the shows and loved 98% of the shows.
When Toonami came back, I also ecstatic and watched it until, 2016-ish and that's when I fell off cable.
Wow I'm surprised it's still going thats amazing!!! I was around Toonami during the Gundam Era, and my absolute favorite times with Toonami was when One Piece, Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, and Bleach were the big ones to watch at the time.
