Been a subscriber for a while now, bought a KLR 650 a few years ago due to your channel, and now bought a 2021 Yamaha Tenere 700 due to your channel... Just wanted to say thanks for what you do. Keep the upgrades coming to your new bike, I'm needing ideas.

Can’t stop watching the T7 videos. I may get this over the Africa twin so I can’t go as fast and I won’t get tickets or die lol. When I had my race bikes I hit 176mph lol. I’m too old for that now. The T7 looks so fun
I've always wanted an AT but I think the Tenere has to be more fun. Plenty of power but not quite as big and heavy.
Basically i did the same on my CB650F. Tighten the oil filter by hand. But I replaced the stock drain plug with a Stahlbus oil drain valve. Well - you buy it once and you'll be quicker with the oil change.
Actually I didn't want to change oil and filter on my one. But my oil filter was leaking oil. Just a really small amount at the bottom, 'cause one of the mechanics had tighten it with a nut... well the cap of the oil filter was so minor damaged, no one could see the leakage. And one day... the whole bottom of my bike was covered in oil.
But lucky for me I've seen this just in time.

Yeah, I stayed with conventional oil for my 600 mile change as well, then before I laid it up for Winter (at 1600 miles - 3 weeks ago) I went and changed the oil and filter again, this time going to the full synthetic Yamalube. Might be overkill, but I like putting my bikes up for Winter with a fresh oil change and filter. I don't ride in too much dust, so just checked the air filter, still very clean! Definitely have some things on the list to have bought and installed before Spring (late March for us)! Cheers!
I like the position for the filter and drain plug. With the exception of having to take off the skid plate, its great for easy access. I've got to get a metal plate for the KLR though. Last few rides there's been some serious BONK factor, lol.
I do too, at first I was a little disappointed about having to remove the plate but honestly I think it still just about as quick as the KLR.
That old oil looks very clean. Good to see it being changed before it’s filthy like most owners do.

WARNING: I've heard the recommended tourqe spec for the drain plug in the manual is incorrect and tells you to tighten it waaaay to much. I usually just go a little past snug and check it after a few miles.
Kudos to the Yamaha engineers that designed the bike to have the drain plug and filter like that. On my Versys, when you take the filter off, it's right above the headers so you have to make a foil cover for the pipes so they don't end up coated in oil.
Yeah it certainly makes for an easy job! I've owned a few machines like that... Not cool lol
You might change your mind about Yamaha engineers making items accessible on this engine. You'll understand after changing the spark plugs the first time.
Drain bolt was over tightened. Yam admitted torque spec is too tight on drain bolt. Only do about 20 ft lbs. Be sure to loosen the rear axle nut and re-torque same with front in case of field flat you'll never get the rear off. several people had to use an impact on the rear axle.

Would definitely prefilled that oil filter though. It will make oil pressure light go off quicker and cut down on time engine runs without oil pressure

When I did 1st service on my Africa Twin drain plugs came off easy.. filter was torqued so tight I had to stab thru with a screwdriver/never had to stand on my head to read anything.. hahaha
Lol. My chickens are just as loud. Looks to be much easier changing the oil on the T7 than the old KLR. New skid plate Ya you’re going to need one for the Alaska trip. 😁
What kind do you have? Yep, it definitely is. As first I was disappointed about having to remove the skid plate but I'm pretty sure it's still went faster then when I'd change it on the KLR.

I m the opposite. I torque the drain plug and I torque the oil filter too! Yes I know it's overkill.
Prestia2011 The threads are usually aluminum, if you torque them you damage the threads.

I mean torque them to spec. For instance the oil filter is usually 125 inch pounds of torque. I follow the manual

What are your thoughts on sacrificing a quart of oil to "flush" the case on the first oil change? Just let the bike sit there with the plug out, and dump a quart into the fill port. Any residual metal pieces left over from the break-in which didn't make their way into the filter should get helped along and into the catch pan...the first oil change is really the only time you'd get any value out of this since that's when you're breaking it in. For the price of a quart of oil it can't hurt.
I actually thought about doing that, certainly wouldn't be a bad idea. To late for me now though haha.

It's really rocket science to change oil. Hey dude, you have to replace oil plug washer - it's deformed. Yamaha should fine you for wrong information.

I think the motorcycle has to be on a horizontal position, not on the side stand, some of the old oil is still there.
Mmm the drains on the far left side of the motor so having it on the stand should make it the lowest point. But that's why I tilted it around like that, just to make sure it all drained.

Lol worrying about them chickens. those damn roosters make more noise then they need! they also try to fight you every step of the way! 600 seems a little excessive though. although i should probably replace my oil on my 2017 klr as i just bought it with 5k miles.
Ha ha yeah they certainly are. We've actually had a few hens taken and they didn't make a peep then, to busy running away I guess lol. Yeah it's 600 and then 1000 which seems odd but better safe than sorry I suppose.

I didnt change my oil on my klr for 4k miles. little did i know that my 2009 klr ate oil on long treks as much as it did gas it seems. hell i was told once by a mechanic that i did not even need to change my oil filter for up to 10k miles. did i trust that advice.. heck no. but i got what i could out of that bike and more( the more being i still have a streak of oil leading to my house from a 1/4 of a mile away when i lost my oil plug and watched the last bits of oil fall from my pan when i got to my house). Me right now cannot wait to ride! i think i will go to moab and do utahs part of the alpine trail for my bday(april). as i mentioned i just bought a klr and realize im not as comfortable on it as my old one. I also believe it is due to the tire and why i got a 2017 so cheap. the previous owner had dropped it a several times and i can see that the tire (brain fart) wanted to lean into corners rather than grip. i know from my time learning that the tire is one of the most important aspects of riding a bike and what you want to do. getting use to one tire can change your whole perspecive on a bike.
