I think doing your own first service is a way to bond with your bike. It's good to know how it works and for you to get used to working on it. Also, I don't want some kid making $15 an hour accidentally banging his tool on it or scraping it against another bike. Last, I don't know how long it takes them to do the service, but I don't want to sit there and wait while my bike goes into a queue. My bike is the R7.
I’ve seen on new Japanese bikes as my friend only buys new the dealer said he could do it himself as long as recites were kept and kinda documented. I’ve never seen a Japanese bike go majorly before warranty though. I buy very lightly used like new, original older owner Japanese bikes ,and save a lot of money that way.
I've done both, but now it's just as you said. Not all European motorcycles are the same. I have owned three Triumphs and outside of normal wearable items (fluids, chain/sprocket, tires, and battery) they have been trouble free. Glad to see you're having fun!
When I had Mt07, I did oil change and adjust the chain at 500 miles. I did the same with my MT10. Those bikes are super reliable and just need regular maintenance to keep them going.
I bought a new bike this summer. After about 600 miles I changed the oil and then called the dealer to see about the "first service" I mentioned that I had already changed the oil and he said, thats basically all we would have done no need to bring it in.
I never buy a new bike anyway I always pick up bikes that have done about 7000 miles and look brand new! I save a lot of money that way, as I don't pay full price and skipped a few services (i make sure to buy ones with full service history) also they normally come with free mods done by previous owner like after-market exhaust, tail tidy, fancy LED indicators, heated grips etc.
@@dr.jiIIaIicecooper2587 I don't buy them from owners I get them from trade, and I haven't seen any cheap mods lol, my last buy I got a triumph speed triple RS 2017 model with tail tidy, LED triumph aftermarket indicators, arrow exhausts, heated grips all for £7400 with only 7200 miles on the clock. Brand new it used to be £12,000
Depends on the Bike look at used MT07 the only one I found in Cali where within $500 dollars of a new bike. I saw one with 20,000 miles on it and it was more then a brand new one.
I would never buy a new bike because they always charge you all kinds of fees. Not worth it. I bought my WR250R with 500 miles and paid $5,500 instead of like $6700 + another $1000 in dealer fees.
@@dr.jiIIaIicecooper2587 I put $1000 down at a dealership almost 3 months ago and I am still waiting. I know without a doubt I could ride it for 6 months and still make money on it if I wanted to.
Dealer told me they just check your fluids and change your oil and oil filter. He said I can do first service myself but keep the receipt. I have a z900 and I made sure I used Kawasaki parts. Got the oil change kit. It cost me a little over $60 for the kit
My dealer told me if you haven't got a paper trail, Suzuki may push back saying the bike may not have been properly maintained according to their standards if you come to make a warranty claim - if you know corporations, you know this is probably true. During warranty period I would HIGHLY recommend service intervals are done at the dealer.
Only time I took the MT-07 to the shop was when looking for the hidden accessory plug under the tank. Thought before I scratched it up I would have them pull it for my charger. I got it back $200 later and they could not find it either, but I was trying to pull it without removing the tank, and figured they would, they didn't and there are now deep scratches on my frame where they tried to use long pliers. So for $200 bones I not only did not get what I asked for, but got a possible rust location, but they claimed they tightened the chain that didnt need to be tightened to bump up the price. I'll do all my own work going forward until valve time at I think 26K.
Could not agree more. First services are just a money grab or for those that do not bother to do the research. Especially these Japanese bikes. Built to perform and last. Just stay on top of proper maintenance and they will keep on pushing!
What a naive and ignorant comment. The first service is mainly to check your bike is still in tolerance as intended by design. Engine, cables, bolts, screws at correct torque specs (especially the chassis), brake pads, and more. The only person here that didn't bother doing their research was you smart guy. The first service I actually prefer a tech looking over my bike and then afterwards myself until the next major service. Stay away from European bikes, your laziness is apparent.
Only brand new bike I ever bought was a '17 XSR900. I did the first oil change myself, then had the dealer do the rest of the "first service" and they charged my $40. I did it mainly for the warranty, and they do check over some important nuts and bolts and stuff and check over the bike so that's fair.
That's incredibly cheap. My dealer told me $300 for my MT-09, I read the manual to see what the first service would even entail and I thought "well that's easy, I'm gonna do it myself and save the cash". I'd probably trust my own work over their apprentices anyways. Although, I've had a decent amount of experience learning (and sometimes screwing up) on my older bikes.
i don’t know, i don’t think the first service is a terrible idea. I agree it’s usually more expensive than a regular service. bolts come loose and things might not wear in as intended and some people like to see service records if buying used.
Just bought a 2023 SV650 and I'm due almost for my first service called a few dealerships everyone wants from 275 to 300 and I asked what is involved? Oil and filter torque spec top off fluids. Some dealers included a throttle body sink but I was told by a very cool dealership that it's not necessary at all it's an emissions California thing and is not required in 49 other states. He said don't worry about it, if you have mechanical knowledge and you've worked on motorcycles before he recommended doing the first service myself. Thanks cyclecruza for the video it's always nice to get another riders perspective on things like these.
I'm still riding my 2003 Kawasaki ZRX1200R that I bought in 2004. 50,000 miles and still roars down the highway with no problems . Only normal maintenance . Oil changes , tires, chains and sprockets.
@@aikidragonpiper71 wow, that is really awesome brother.I am in rural San Gregorio California, I have Scottish in my family, and the people I bought my property from were of Scottish decent.Bagpipe sound is 👍🏻
Lots of sales agents will include it on the deal to help sell a new bike but it is important to get the break in oil out early once the engine parts become familiar with their neighbor. Lot of people shouldn’t be trusted with a wrench though so I get how dealers survive 😂
if you did it yourself it would be less than $20 and only takes less than a half hour. An oil change and chain adjustment are about the easiest things you can do on a bike and I'm not one that enjoys wrenching. Also, you have to factor in taking your time to take the bike to the dealer and wait because sometimes the dealer mechanic takes forever.
@@CycleCruza I agree and personal satisfaction of doing the job yourself, I'm still in the process to get a center stand and oil tub. Next oil change I'm doing it and chain adjustment hands down.
Just picked it up after having my 1st service Cost $428 After picking it up, I immediately noticed a difference in the throttle response. Clutch cable was adjusted, brakes adjusted, and it was hooked up to a computer. Things the average Joe dont have or do The 1st service is more than just checking bolts and changing oil. Perhaps do a vlog with a certified mechanic at a dealership and let them explain what exactly they do. The difference in performance was immediately noticed. So yea, well worth taking it in!! To each their own
Almost like some people make videos to spout out opinions instead of facts. The first service on MTs include a throttle body synchronization, which as you said, the average joe doesn't have the tools needed. It's more than just oil change and chain cleaning too. There's a whole checklist for torque specs they go over to make sure nothing came loose and the bike won't kill you.
👍👍👍 I did a first service at the dealer back when I owned a Yamaha scooter. When I bought my motorcycle I do all the services, repairs myself. Except for fitting tyres. I just get the best price from a few dealers, ride in have a coffee look at all the new/used motorcycles on display while the workshop replaces the tyres.
Thanks man, just bought an R7 and was hesitant to drop the $400 that they wanted for 600 miles of riding. So I looked into what an actual service looks like... and this is something I did all the time on my last bike🤦♂️
I just bought a 2006 Honda cbr 1000 and put 1800 miles on it in 3 weeks😂. I’m a beginner rider. Fucking LOVE my bike man. It’s at Kennedys getting worked on for next season .
If you buy a brand new bike and dont follow the service manual you risk the warrenty to go out the window. I have a kawasaki with a 5 year warrenty but it requires that all services be done at a kawasaki dealer, if not there are no warrenty
Just done my first service saved £175.. Oil and filter check chain tyres and suspension easy job. Use manufacturer components. It's illegal for the main dealer to say you have to take it back for the first service .
Even people from Europe mostly buy Japanese bikes. Rarely who goes for Ducati or Aprilia or KTM. Unfortunately, these bikes are still not enough reliable. I'm a member of many Facebook motorcycle groups and rarely i see someone post a problem on japanese groups. But on European it's so often...
Im doing first service myself on my 2022 zx10r this weekend, my friend keep telling “take it to the dealer your going to void the warranty” literally warranty says its “preferred” but not required to be done at a kawasaki dealership. Also im using kawasaki oil an filter
I'm referring to not having the dealer do the first service which is a glorified oil change. I always change the oil and filter after 500 miles and check the main bolts to make sure that are tightened to spec but that is all you have to really do.
I always get them to throw in the first service, just negotiate the price first. Pretend to be disappointed like youre gonna walk and throw it out there, 9 times outta 10 they cave.
I would just stay away from dealerships to get it fixed. The bike or vehicles will allways needs repaired. Its like the do things to keep it needing repairs.
As I understood from The Oil Geek channel, the wear is at maximum when the engine is new or freshly rebuild. So, many small metal particles will float in the system in those early few hundred km/miles. Reving the engine with high metal content in the oil could lead to excessive wear.
The Aprilia broke down because there was no first service dude...😂 Ducati does well from my experience, however because there are soo many computers on these new bikes most likely there's a flash that comes with the service.
I paid for my mt 07 first service as the stamp in the service book is required to maintain the warranty and it cost me £100! Is it really worth saving that to void the warranty?
I bought a new ATV once and the dealer wanted me to pay like 3 grand for a "service plan" where they basically change the oil and filter and torque the bolts down for a couple years. I said frig that. Never took it back to the dealer once and never had any problems.
Nobody getting under my Busa, that's a special place for me😉😂 Unless it's electronic or internal motor issues, ain't nobody touching Her❤ Just save all oil receipts/screenshot them next to your odometer because they will be time stamped! I change my oil every 1500 miles with Amsoil oil full synthetic, might be a little Overkill but I love my bike/she was on my bucket list!
It's exactly why I do all the service and maintenance on my bikes. Some euro bikes are just a straight rip off with maintenance fees. Though I never had problems with my Triumph Daytona 675R. The Panigale 959 I had only saw the dealership service department as I've no experience working on those nor had some of the specialized tools to work on the Panigale.
That's so true and funny shi#. I own a FZ07 2017.... solid as shit. I have 7580 miles, and changed the oil myself. You're so absolutely correct about that first service. Dealership laughing their ass off at newbies.
When I got my first service, the oil level was too low and the chain was tightened to oblivion. From that point on I learned to do all the management myself.
I have a ktm 1290 sar with akrapovic and my wife has a mt07 with akra also, her bike is much better sounding. I often ride her bike because it is so much fun. There’s something nice about riding a “slow” bike fast.
It's def not needed, but it's also good to have them check for any loose parts or bolts anywhere. And a newly built engine will always have small metal particles that should be cleaned out. Again, not necessary and I've avoided it in the past to save money.
@@dr.jiIIaIicecooper2587 Yea, well then you're making the filter less effective. metal shavings are never good. anyhow like I said it's not required for modern bikes and I've skipped it in the past
My KTM was leaking from the radiator, I brought it to the dealership and had to show proof of my oil change and it was covered by warranty. They had to change my radiator because where the hose connected was bent from the factory
Cycle Cruza awsome video once again! You should try getting into the off road world soon too its as fun as road riding! Been a long time fan keep up the good !
I just got a Triumph Tiger 900 and will do the first service just for warranty purposes. The question I have is why do all these dealers recommend valve adjustments every 10,000 miles or so? Very expensive job. Hell cars can go over 100,000 miles with no valve adjustments. Is this just a rip off or is it needed.
Why would anyone pay the 17 year old they just made a mechanic who doesn't care about your bike at all? Change your oil and oil filter, Check your chain tension and make sure the critical stuff is tight. It's your bike so you will do everything right. Don't have a torque wrench? Buy a good one for half what your first service will cost. Oh and don't buy bikes that have service lights that you can't turn off like Triumph. If you don't give them your money they will change their practises.
The point is that they have to account for the lowest denominator of the customer base and have to account for the ones that know jack shit about working on them on their own. Some people have never touched a wrench in their life.
i am a mechanic myself but first service always let the dealer do it.edit i live in eu and if you dont do the first oil change at the dealer you lose warrenty
Japanese bikes do first oil change and maintenance yourself, use that $300 that you saved on oil, filters and parts for future maintenance instead of giving that money to a dealer. Harley and European bikes I stay away from because they don't want the owner working on his new bike. You know the game, it's all about dealers making money off of new bikes.
I bet that tuono 1100 problem u had has to do with the ride-by-wire system, yamaha has same issues with their YCC-T has to do with how the components communicate with each problem I think the problem is design-related with all chip-controlled systems
KTM is a big rip-off, one reason I never got one. The biggest rip-off is you have to pay like 1k to unlock some features on the new bike that should come standard. lol KTM bikes are already crazy expensive let alone having to pay to unlock features on the bike. PS. In the video, I did say with Euro bikes I do follow what they say to do as to not void the warranty which they seem to like to try and get out of paying for if it breaks down like Aprilia did me with that Tuono I owned.
@@CycleCruza maybe, but Duke 390 is a hoot to ride and a perfect beginner bike. I’ll admit I’m a looks guy too the other beginner bikes are lacking from their bigger brothers.
Sure are built well. The mx bikes are for pro mx racing for rebuilding ect. I would definitely look at that piston by 400 hrs. I’d do it before. I’ve seen the 250fx get 500 hrs on top ends so I’d think that the 450 would last as long, but you are ripping on street not trail riding. In some ways the street is better if you are keeping from redline. Dirt riding especially hard race pace is very hard on bikes. A broke amateur racer doesn’t need to rebuild every 12 hrs though maybe every 2 years on a good 4 stroke race bike depending on ride time. I always do my oil changes on time for mileage but admittedly not on time for a year. New oil I’m not changing with 300 miles on it in 1 year. I just test the oil and ride it every few months if 1 of my bikes isn’t getting ridden. I must put 14,000 miles on in 6 months of riding season on 3 bikes to reach oil change mileage on everything. 1 bike I change at half the recommended mileage as 8,000 miles seems high to me. It’s cheap so I do it. If the bike starts very easy the valves are likely ok. Gets harder to start time for valve adjustment for sure.
What is the point you're trying to make every time with YZ450 not doing a rebuild/valve check on time and being over it by a stretch in hours? That it doesn't rattle yet and it's all fine there? Or the point about keeping 4-5 years, that does not tell anything, it's the miles that count. Overall looks like a negligence attitude. I would understand if you said like:" yeah, i've got a full service repair manual for each bike and i am doing everything what is meant for every mileage/time interval". Does not look like the case.
There is a dirt bike motovlogger that has had a 2019 YZ450FX with like 500+ hours and the valves has never moved out of spec. I'm doing this as an experiment. I will get a top end and service done on the YZ this winter and will share the results. I'm not one the enjoys working on a bike, I'd rather be riding than wrenching.
Far being from me to know what's in CC head, still maybe his point is that some of these service intervals are somewhat arbitrary. Although I sure some engineering went into determining the intervals. As for valve adjustment/check I've had about a 1/2 dozen bikes with either shim over or under bucket adjustment and NOT ONE of them has ever been out of tolerance at the first valve check. Some of them it's a major PITA to check the valves as you have to remove about 1/2 the bike just to get at the valve cover. So it may give you a attitude to push it, more so if the engine is running well. I can say with older bikes that had threaded adjusters that's not the case, so those I would keep a closer eye on.
New bikes are so reliable. Dealers know the first service is probably the last time you will see them for maintenance. Basic oil change and chain lube can be done by anyone
You're right the 600 mile first service is mostly a glorified oil/filter change. Anyone allowing themselves to be gouged by a dealer for it is a chump.
When I bought this bike the sales guy said make sure to bring back for its first service for $300. lol I was like whatever dude, I'll change the oil and filter myself at 500 miles. $300 can buy me a lot of oil and filters.
@@CycleCruza Yea, some of the dealers like to imply ( or at least people claim they do) that you need to have them do the first service to maintain your warranty. Of course that's not only BS, it would be illegal for them to require you to have them do the work to keep your warranty. I've heard of BMW guy's getting smoked for over $1000 on the first service at the dealer.
Hey cycle cruza, i just got an xsr700, dealership told me to keep it below 5000 for the first 500 miles. Then, keep it below 6000 rpm for miles 500-750. Is all that true?
I thought you were going to say doing change your oil after the first 500 miles LOL I was going to say you’re on crack. Because that first oil change is actually important. And trust me that bike is already broken in by the time a customer buys it at the dealer😂 we run and rev the piss out of them.
Do not hate on EU bikes, its just the italian bikes that are not so reliable but bikes like BMW, Triumph, Royal Enfield, KTM, and Husqvarna are reliable
Give me the glory fide service anyday i want that stamp ive never spent 10K before on a bike so i would rather spend the money and get the dealer to do the 1st service
"First service" is a dealer rip off in my opinion. Just read through your manual and do all of the checks in there and change the oil yourself then boom Bob's your Uncle. Go get after it!
No offense to you but that's some shitty advice to be given people.. It's all good until your bike breaks down and they don't want to cover it because you didn't get the 1st service I've seen it happen time and time again.. They may not be able to tell if you did a soff or hard break-in but they definitely know if you got your 1st service or not. Now service is after the 1st service you're free to do yourself as long as you document the oil and filter you use. .. the first service is very important..

My bike is the R7.
did the first service on my 2023 ninja 650 myself. Changed the oil at 600 miles. sitting pretty at 2600 right now.
Some places REQUIRE you to do the service if you want to make a warranty claim or keep your warranty valid. It depends on the dealer.
Eh I've never had to make a warranty claim on any Japanese motorcycle in my life. You only worry about the warranty on Euro bikes.
There is a right to repair act so they can't void your warranty. Harley has been sued for doing that to customers
Very true I have encountered that where they insist on 1st service
It doesn't void the warrantee unless they can prove that some neglect or modification caused the issue. Dont let them fool you
I've done both, but now it's just as you said. Not all European motorcycles are the same. I have owned three Triumphs and outside of normal wearable items (fluids, chain/sprocket, tires, and battery) they have been trouble free. Glad to see you're having fun!
Triumph is the exception 💯
Triumph makes great quality reliable bikes.
When I had Mt07, I did oil change and adjust the chain at 500 miles. I did the same with my MT10. Those bikes are super reliable and just need regular maintenance to keep them going.
Does it void the warranty?
@@bilbolagginz8493 what do you mean??
@@MrWolf2212 Does doing the first checkup yourself usually void the warranty with the dealer?
@@bilbolagginz8493 not at all. Just use Yamalube oil and keep the receipt of it
How loud is the chain noise supposed to be? I adjusted the chain to within spec but it still sounds loud but I also don’t know bikes
That is a smart strategy.
And they have break-in specific oil from the factory
Exactly
I saw the name hillbilly and I had to give a thumbs up.I am on my 300 acre rural ranch, btw lol.

I’ve got lots of Scottish and Irish and Scots/Irish ancestry and some Cherokee and Choctaw mixed in.
Lots of sales agents will include it on the deal to help sell a new bike but it is important to get the break in oil out early once the engine parts become familiar with their neighbor. Lot of people shouldn’t be trusted with a wrench though so I get how dealers survive 😂
I'm mechanically handicapped and I hate working with my hands. The tools also hate me. I'm more than happy to pay somebody else to do it.
I just did my 1st full service (600 miles) 2022 Yamaha R3 and chain adjustment at the dealership, they charged me $110.00 - reasonable imo.
if you did it yourself it would be less than $20 and only takes less than a half hour.
Just picked it up after having my 1st service
Cost $428
After picking it up, I immediately noticed a difference in the throttle response.
Clutch cable was adjusted, brakes adjusted, and it was hooked up to a computer. Things the average Joe dont have or do
The 1st service is more than just checking bolts and changing oil.
I was considering where to get the first service for my bike. I always thought it was some BS but was too new to be sure. Thanks for this video!
The loose battery connection on the Aprillia wasn’t a reliability issue.
Not in America. Federal Laws prevent manufacturers requiring dealer service for warranty to remain valid
Haha, I never do the first service either, i usually leave the dealer with oil and filter for the first change.
Im doing first service myself on my 2022 zx10r this weekend, my friend keep telling “take it to the dealer your going to void the warranty” literally warranty says its “preferred” but not required to be done at a kawasaki dealership. Also im using kawasaki oil an filter
First 3-4 services are free for all motorbikes here in India 🇮🇳 . Only have to pay for the price of oil.
I would as the engine is brand new and you have just run it in so for 50 quid I'd change oil and filter as engine brakes in
I'm referring to not having the dealer do the first service which is a glorified oil change.
Reving the engine with high metal content in the oil could lead to excessive wear.
yep this is a terrible video.
Yep are be putting it in for 1st service
I bought a new ATV once and the dealer wanted me to pay like 3 grand for a "service plan" where they basically change the oil and filter and torque the bolts down for a couple years. I said frig that. Never took it back to the dealer once and never had any problems.
Nobody getting under my Busa, that's a special place for me😉😂
Unless it's electronic or internal motor issues, ain't nobody touching Her❤
Just save all oil receipts/screenshot them next to your odometer because they will be time stamped!
I change my oil every 1500 miles with Amsoil oil full synthetic, might be a little Overkill but I love my bike/she was on my bucket list!
I've been under your busa. 😊
What exhaust is that? I did a first service. At 1.1k miles. I rode a lot. I was at 500 miles in a week. I do my own now.. thanks to you :)
They threw in a free oil change when I purchased my MT-07. I’ll be heading to the dealer for my first oil change.
I just bought 1 only had it for about 5 days no complaints here . I got with 0 mile best bike I've been on
Part 2 says why never to do a service on a new motorcycle
I don't buy em 😅😅😅
I bought a brand new Kawasaki Ninja 650 back in 2017 in France, the first 1,000 kms maintenance was free.
Dam Cycle Cruza. You got the best of both worlds. You got the Harley sound with a street bike power.
All my Japanese bikes, oil changes and ride! Thants all I needed ever.
When are u planning on doing the ECU flash vid really waiting for it. Keep up the good work
That is coming soon. In the video I will also be removing the akra exhaust baffle and installing a K&N air filter.
First service at the dealer.... Or new full exhaust, power commander and change my own oil and check torque on bolts? I know what Im gonna do.
I always do my own oil changes and other minor services.
I have my 2023 r7 due for oil change service at 600mile. How far can I ride my r7 without getting the first service? Kudos brotha! Ride safe!!
I did on my Harley after 1000 miles but I wanted them to go over everything. After that I’ll just do the oil changes myself…
Try a Banshee Horn I really like adding them to my bikes. It actually has some sound to it as loud as some cars
i am a mechanic myself but first service always let the dealer do it.edit i live in eu and if you dont do the first oil change at the dealer you lose warrenty
I did that on a 2004 Kawasaki 636 it cost me like $400 back then every bike I've had since I never bothered again.... For sure a money grab
You should see what the Euro dealers charge for a first service. It is ridiculous!
Ay don't go over 25 going down Memphis they got a speed camera I got a ticket there. Right in front of you across the intersection. 4:26
Agree. Perform the second service first.
Harley wanted to charged me $619 and I ran as fast as I could. They said the price included all fluid flush ( Bullsh!t )
I bet that tuono 1100 problem u had has to do with the ride-by-wire system, yamaha has same issues with their YCC-T has to do with how the components communicate with each problem I think the problem is design-related with all chip-controlled systems
If you don’t with KTM it won’t unlock some of the locked options:(
KTM is a big rip-off, one reason I never got one.

CP-2 such a good sound
New bikes are so reliable. Dealers know the first service is probably the last time you will see them for maintenance. Basic oil change and chain lube can be done by anyone
No soft break in, full throttle day 1. 😂 that’s some shitty advice
The worst actually.. Jap bikes are great but the cross hatching in the cyl walls? I mean it's basic engine 101

What about chain tightening?
You're right the 600 mile first service is mostly a glorified oil/filter change. Anyone allowing themselves to be gouged by a dealer for it is a chump.
When I bought this bike the sales guy said make sure to bring back for its first service for $300. lol I was like whatever dude, I'll change the oil and filter myself at 500 miles. $300 can buy me a lot of oil and filters.

"First service" is a dealer rip off in my opinion. Just read through your manual and do all of the checks in there and change the oil yourself then boom Bob's your Uncle. Go get after it!
I need it to keep my warranty bruh 😂😂
For my FZ09 I just do lol changes lol
No offense to you but that's some shitty advice to be given people.. It's all good until your bike breaks down and they don't want to cover it because you didn't get the 1st service I've seen it happen time and time again.. They may not be able to tell if you did a soff or hard break-in but they definitely know if you got your 1st service or not. Now service is after the 1st service you're free to do yourself as long as you document the oil and filter you use. .. the first service is very important..
