Changing the ignition lock cylinder on your Jeep Cherokee

- The process to swap the ignition lock cylinder is pretty simple.
From time to time, My key would not turn to start the Jeep.
After years of faithful service, the key cylinder started to malfunction.
A quick call to the parts store and I’m back in business.

To everyone who’s key just won’t turn: I was there too. Took two days of research to figure out what to do. But I finally did it and got the new one in.
I bought myself a new ignition cylinder at auto zone, $72 in California. Then I got a metal drill bit designed for thick metal. The pin on the bottom where this fellow pushed in with a screw driver, I drilled through, careful not to damage anything but that pin. I tore the hell out of it till I could wiggle it out with some pliers. As soon as I pulled the pin bit out, the old cylinder popped right out. I aligned the new cylinder to the back, like a puzzle piece, and BOOM! Slid right in and old reliable is back to being reliable. Be sure to wear protective goggles. Metal shards were flying around. Don’t want those nasty sucker in ur eye. Good luck!
(BTW- I drive a ‘98 Limited. Love her to death but damn! It’s a new thing every couple months lol)

Such a satisfying video! I'm about to go do that on mine, my ignition switch also failed, so I will be replacing that, along with the starter that got stuck engaged, even with the car turned off! This fix might have saved you a new starter and from a possible car fire!

Hey Joe I have a simple tip for you you don't need the screwdriver all you have to do is turn the key slightly backwards as far as accessory and pull the cylinder out it's that simple
My problem is it (key) won't turn either way
@@gregorystandefer9568pop out the ignition switch on the left hand from the ignition cylinder. And turn your ignition switch with the screwdriver and your car fire up.
O well done you saved me a heap of work I was taking out all the screws then I watched your video. So simple.

My neighbor sprayed lubricant inside and all around the cylider and then was finally able to turn the key , then the technique in this video worked....
How do I turn the key to on to get it out of my key won’t even turn over? I have no man or mechanic to help me do this so I’m on my own and need my Jeep running to get my kids to school out of town everyday. So if anyone has any answers please help

I have replaced the starter battery and alternator on my 98 xj. It starts most of the time but sometimes it will get just a single click on the solenoid or fast little ticks like a dead battery. Then out of nowhere you turn the key and it starts? Thoughts ?

So you didn't have to program the key?
Having the same issue however unable to turn the key at all to the on position so I haven’t been able to figure out how to do that to remove the cylinder. Unable to compress the tab unless the key turns to the on position but the key does not turn to that position.
Any luck? I'm about to tackle the same problem.

Slightly between off and auxiliary while pulling on The key , it'll pop right out a little wiggling and you're done.

Not sure...but I think the key is needed..or everyone would just take a screwdriver to the lock cylinder.

Depending the year if you take your title and go to the dealership they might be able to cut you a key if it's not one that has a chip

Edit I got it done I broke the tab off the old key cyclinder with a cold chisel swap in the cyclinder with working key from old column easy peas
I don't have the key you think I could do the same thing. I got a new ignition cylinder with the key.
The dealer wants me to tow the car there to cut a key.

That is EASY. I bought a Jeep with a bad key ignition. So replacing is so EASY. Now, How to change the door locks.
I have the same issue as others. Catch 22: I can’t turn the key so I need a new cylinder. I can’t remove the cylinder unless I can turn the key. 🤔
Oh yeah. I thought of that too. If I lost the key I might have tried the screwdriver method. Old school.

Help we are at a strong hold and can’t get it to turn at all.even after we do what you do we have our wheels turns slightly and it won’t come out of locked mode .

Hey mate did you have to code that new ignition to the truck or can we just slide it in?
I tried it today the key signal came up if it was shut off by itself so I guess you do have to reprogram it for certain the vehicle

I have a 98 xj. It’s got a misfire with hesitation and some small backfiring when driving. Any ideas? It has new map sensor, cam sensor, crank sensor, injectors, throttle position sensor, coil and plugs. I don’t hear any vacuum leaks or seen any fuel leaks but it does smell like raw fuel as well. Local part store scanner doesn’t come back with any codes. My person scanner came back with two but I’ve changed those parts.

Look into replacing Cam shaft position sensor on the bell housing....
Take it to a muffler shop you might have a exhaust leak. And replace your oxygen sensors
Our 2002 Renegade needed a six point bit... not a Phillips head to loosen the screws in the cover. The screws are a pain in the a@+!
And you showed how to put the key cylinder in and you slightly turn the key to make the tab loosen up that's how you remove it

I think I used a screwdriver...
All you have to do is insert the key turn it slightly backwards towards accessory and pull the cylinder out I did mine last night'
What if your old key has a chip inside? will the new key work? I need to replace this part but I’m worried new keys won’t start the Jeep.

I called a nearby auto shop that deals with jeeps and they helped look up the one that I need for my particular car and I got it and the keys worked so now I’m good. I had someone come help me pull out the old one and put in the new one.

Just used a screwdriver on the button on the switch. Had the key inserted as well.

I have that issue now…I have to take a hammer and “bang” the key in to turn it……I imagine you can remove the cover, and essentially do the same…it’s a method I found in the internet and at one point I couldn’t turn the key at all and thought I would need a tow etc….but the hammer trick works
