DDJ-400 all the way, the fact that it comes with a full-featured pro-DJ software right out the box and has design similarities to club standard CDJ/DJM set-ups means that moving to professional equipment will be smoother and more intuitive.
Great vid, for me this is what comes down to... $250 for the sb3, Serato lite $100 to upgrade to Serato pro Total:. $350 Vs $250 for a DDJ 400 with full Rekordbox $100 for a hard case, headphones, laptop stand, longer audio cables Total: Also $350 For immediately jumping in and practicing plus mobility the DDJ 400 wins by a mile. Best value with functionality by far.
nice economic analysis El Flex... Serato Pro vs Rekordbox is pretty even in my opinion. Both packages do basically the same doggone thing. the DDJ-400 package allows you to buy other stuff you will need for the same cash outlay.
The fuck brother how is that comparison even fair? You'd have to pay the same extra 100 bucks for all those extra equipment you listed, if you bought the sb3.
Got the DDJ 400, it's awesome...best decision I've made this year. At the beginning I was a bit sceptic cuz i never used a mixer before, thought it was hard to learn but mixing is super easy once I watched some of your vids, keep up the good work and thank you :)
Hey man, so with the DDJ 400 can you literally create your own music? Can you take samples from old songs and stuff and change it up and stuff like that? Hope I’m making senses
DJ carlo I've been just playing at my church for about a few weeks and i'be used some of your techniques from your videos and i'm improved immensely from where I started back in December and from my first time playing in front of a crowd, one of my Youth sponsors liked my performance so much he said i'd done better than a DJ he'd seen at a club, and so I wanna say thank you and keep doing what your doing
If you want to DJ clubs and CDJs in the future, get the 400 Honestly heres the bottom line. No need to switch your library over later one to RB to export tracks and RB is pretty simple to use. I learned it in 1 night going b2b with my friend on a ddj1000. Obviously the hot cues didnt transfer over to RB from serato but with needle search its pretty easy to pre cue and the bailey to adjust waveforms in RB makes it alot easier to use imo.
I got the ddj 400 and could not be happier. Was thinking of getting the new traktor s4 but the ddj is 3 times cheaper and I honestly think it's amazing.
I also bought the ddj 400 based on your recommendations and previous video. To me Serato is great and all but just like APPLE they just want you to upgrade more and more all the time costing more money. The ddj 400 comes with everything you need maybe even more for a beginner DJ. If money is not an issue then go with the other one. Great video by the way like always keep up the good work.
I just got the DDJ-400 today. Honestly while I much preferred the visual looks of the SB3 more, I wasn't too keen on having to buy a Serato pro license when the 400 came with full software right out of the box. And I'm having an absolute blast with it already, so I feel like I made the right choice 😁
I went with the SB3, however- after rewatching the video, there was a key detail that you mentioned that has me interested in the DDJ- 400. At 3:39 you mention you're able to maintain your hotcues on your songs on a usb to a CDJ with the DDJ 400. I was curious if this is possible with SB3 if it's coupled with Serato DJ Pro? This is important to me because my cousin was talking to me the other day about getting a new controller himself (he Dj's too), and had mentioned that most places such as clubs will tend to have there own equipment such as DDJ- 1000's. He had mentioned that if I planned on getting a new controller that I should consider a Pioneer- that way I can familiarize myself with the layout, and (fingers crossed), if I get good enough, I can just import my music onto the usb and have some sense of what I'm doing on the stage. Sorry for the long message Carlo! You really are an inspiration, and I watch all your videos. I hope this message reaches you safely, and that I don't bother you too much with my inquiries. Thank You!!!!
I'm probably too late but to answer your question. I'd recommend the 400 as it has the pioneer software. The pioneer software is used by every DJ in the world and is the standard software for making mixes. It's compatible with every club mixer as long as you have a USB stick with your songs ready to go!! Hope I could help
Just bought a ddj400, arrives next week! Woo woo. There like gold dust at the minute and out of stock everywhere. Managed to pick one up from DV247. Had a go on one of these in Currys before lockdown and it's so easy to use. Having not mixed from having vinyl back in the day this was fun to use and the effects are 👌
I've been using DDJ-400 for about 2 months and wow... impressive what you can do with it. Testing rekordbox i found it easy but eventually i just mapped it with traktor pro 3.1 and the performance is awesome. I think all software should be compatible with the most common controllers.
Alright, I'm set now, i'm getting the SB3 asap ! Thanks ! EDIT: I've watched the video 2x in a row, just to make sure, and since I already have Serato DJ Pro and from what I could gather on some reddit threads, the DDJ SB3 is much worthy but only if you have the full software already, anything else, I guess I'd go with the DDJ 400. Either way, I will use mine with Virtual DJ since they both compatible with. Thanks for the video.
yeah I wanted to get the ddj-400 but I got Serrato dj pro for free and it makes sense now since it wouldn't be worth it to buy Rekordbox as well. So im probs gonna buy the sb3
I still can't decide because I love the extra features on the SB3 like more effects, slip mode, 4 decks, and beat jump, but the DDJ 400 comes with much better software. What on earth am I supposed to do?
Hey Evan, how accurate is the sync function on Record box? Does it stay in time very well? I've used Serato and the sync is fantastic, but looking to upgrade to the 400 and record box. Thanks
I have both of these controllers and love them both however I think the SB3 is geared more towards the beginner dj without any experience... A professional would probably prefer the 400...Great Video. Thanks...!!!
The DDJ-SB3 has nothing to envy. It has a well-distributed layout and a smaller pitch fader, which is a great advantage for beginners. With a smaller pitch fader, it is easier to practice compared to a larger one.
Thanks for your review on them! Though I'll have to say I've seen more apt controllers come out since I did this video. This video is nearly 6 years old now haha
I loved the fact that you were talking about them being for a beginner DJ just learning and then mentioned exporting your cue points to take to your CDJ gig. That was classic. :) Honestly you should have compared the DDJ RB to the DDJ 400 and just kept it all in Rekordbox. The real big difference between the 400 and Pioneer other entry controllers is pretty simple they are trying to make the 400 have and appearance and layout that more closely matches the newer pioneer pro gear. If that is important to you for learning, practicing, performing etc then you have your answer as to which is better. Not sure I would recommend any of the entry level controllers, I believe you are better off starting at least with the pro-sumer models and just putting in the time to learn. It's similar to when you used to try to explain to people why a 1200 mk2 was worth it eons ago in the days of vinyl.
Great video. You made a CHOICE. Most other videos cop-out and say, "Use what works best for you." I'm very likely to go with the choice you made. I'm enjoying your videos more and more as I find them during my searches. Thanks for giving an actual opinion.
Now the DDJ400 also support Algoriddim's Djay (iOS, MacOs and Windows) which supports streaming with Spotify. And more streaming services are added. Together with a free Recordbox DJ licence makes the DDJ400 very attractive.
well. you can change almost everything with the ddj-400 through the midi function in recordbox. I have the ddj-rb and I have missed the beatloop function, and also I have not used the slicer mode, so I just exchanged the two. That's just a fraction of what I've changed. In my opinion, the ddj-400 is 100 times the better choice with recordbox
I have the ddjsb3 and it's amazing. Serato Pro it's affordable, it's effects and filters are lovely (I'm looking at you wolfpack) and the connectivity with Tidal it's superb. I strongly recommend the ddjsb3 if you can accesorize it with the features I just named.
Sold my DDJ-RB to buy a DDJ-400 because of the lay out. Transitioning to club standard set is easy. And you wont feel lost when using pioneer cdj and djm when you are used to or training with ddj-400
“That means you can fork up extra cash to get extra functions like DVS...” But neither controller is DVS capable. You can however use a CDJ in HID mode with no software upgrade needed.
My first controller was a Vestax PDXd3. This was way back in 1998 and it was already fully standalone laptop free. Yes, 1998! Imagine that! And it is actually rock solid until today. Great machine!
@@djcarlo YES!! YES!! 1 million times YES! What you play, how you entertain is KING. If the crowd ain't feeling it, you might as well go home regardless of your gear. IT IS NOT THE GEAR!! IT WAS NEVER THE GEAR!! IT IS THE MUSIC!! DJ Dennis' First Law of Music: There are only 2 kinds of music. Good Music and Bad Music. Listener/dancer gets to choose!
Thing is the SB3 can work with Rekordbox just fine - internally its just an SB2 with its ID changed. if you look online there is a registry hack in windows that makes it show as an SB2. Rekordbox 5 and lower will boot with it and it operates perfectly. AS for RB6, the SB2 was listed as supported but you have to pay for the licence but it too works with the SB3 in SB2 mode. Before anyone asks no this isn't supposed to happen, it is just foi technical demonstration only. also the Reg edit resets everytime you unplug SB3 or reboot PC.
the only gripe I have with the sb3 is that if you use the controller with Serato DJ lite first, when you upgrade to pro the bottom 4 pads are mapped out the same as in Serato DJ Lite, so you have to re midi map them, which can be stressful for a beginner.
I just got the SB3. Using it with Virtual dj (already have a pro license) and love it. Everything is unlocked and works great. Just gotta get used to transition from mouse/keyboard to controller as it's a very different hand/eye coordination and muscle memory. Still having a hard time timing my fader cuts, gotta practice I guess.
I bet to disagree on the effects..yes you can only run 1 effect per deck on ddj 400, however remember you can use the fx Pad to assign the other effects..
I ended up getting the SB3 and it should arrive tomorrow. The only thing that has me worried is I've never played with any DJ software before, so I'm unsure if Ive made the correct choice. As long as I get to mix some bluezy tunes together I'm happy tho.
@@djcarlo Well I love it haha, very easy to get right into mixing songs. Definitely is alot to take in but Ill get it figured out with enough practice.
Ultimate Powa Yeah man I got Serato DJ Suite when the whole package was 50% during Black Friday. I have been eyeballing the SB3. I need a DJ Controller. I have also been eyeballing the JBL PartyBox 300 or Soundboks 2.
DJ Carlo Atendido, we can have the slicer mode on the DDJ-400! And you know it ;). You just have to go in the midi setup and replace a thing you don't use, personally slicer mode replace the keyshift function ;). The ddj-400 is way cheaper than the SB3 because we have a full version of rekordbox, a beginner will be frustrated with the lite version of serato ;).
Same, though I noticed latency when using the sb3 soundcard because it's not using asio. I had it setup with asio4all and all sound/latency problems were fixed.
I think what's a massive double edged sword with aerato DJ lite is the lack of Key detection, while every other software under the sun including cross DJ pro for Android includes sorting by key it's been removed for SDJ lite, it's what is keeping me firmly in traktors camp but reiordbox has come such a long way too
Yeah Andrew, Serato Lite is really, as the name implies, lite. Serato DJ Pro is great, and so is Rekordbox DJ. We've been talking about Traktor on IG, so you know my thoughts there lol
You can use the slicer mode on ddj-400 but you've got to map the pads to do this. I replaced the keyboard option by the slicer option that is way more fun to use
I bought a DDJ 400 because is more confortable for my stile, and have a program(little difficult at the first impact) but not need to be upgrade and you can use license code in two PC to have a possibility to connect a home PC and portale PC(for example)
@@djcarlo that is my upgrade because when I was young i used a "Numark party mix" and i love it because is soo easy to use but web you press a button you listen it when you mix because is total plastica, but for 50$ (2013) it was a good investiment to start and what is a console
I got the sb3 as soon as it came out, and honestly I use VirtualDJ. It works on AMD and I can easily port my database over to my Mac for a backup. That being said, I didn't like Serato, it crashed a few Times during my trial period. I would like to try rekordbox once I pickup a ddj-1000, which I've have been looking at since it came out. Do you ever use vdj? Would these two head to head on VDJ change your opinion?
Thanks for the advice, Carlo. In my opinion, DDJ-400 is a more profitable purchase. Full serato for $ 129 plus quite expensive SB3 disqualifies the latter. I buy the first one. ;)
Just got a DDJ400 from Currys yesterday and spent about 6 hours trying it out. I'm a very amateur dj and the ddj400 won't let me do a bad mix. The ability to use sound banks like soundcloud increase the experience. One thing, can it be used with a mobile device as I can't find info about it.
But the interface in Recordbox looks better & easy to use/understand. It all depends on the software u want to play/use with. I have DDJ 400 but I do plan to get a 4 channels controller eventually. If I had more money, I would prob have skipped the 400 and buy the 1000 instead cuz it has 4 channels.
I have sb3: the greater lack is that the effect section can't be listened in cue (headphone) before you put in the mix; the second lack is about the possibility in rekordbox to have track suggestion (the best next track in accordance with the track that is goin') ... Now I am tryin' to map rekordbox for ddjsb3 but is difficult ...
Thanks for the video Carlo. It helped me a lot. For what a I saw, I think DDJ 400 is a good option since the effects display reminds me a lot to the DJM 900 Nexus and if you want to do an upgrade someday, the transition from this controller to that mixer won’t be a problem. Besides, Rekordbox has this feature that displays the structure of the songs on your playlist and I find that very helpful. For those couple of reasons I will try starting to DJ with DDJ 400. Now, have a question for you, what kind of effects would you recommend me for house / tech house music? Thanks in advance!
I like the DDJ-400 most because it mirrors Pioneers flagship CDJ and DJM. And it will make it easier for you to go over from the 400 to a more pro set.
i like the both controllers, Im planning to buy that DDj-SB3 maybe i prefer the DDJ-SB3 as a beginner. and i dont which is the best sofware because i always use serato. but thanks for the information DJ Carlo Atendido
I've been using serato dj for a long long time on a numark nv , but i prefer rekordbox interface and functions and ai want to go for ddj-400.Is it a good choice?
Rekordbox is great honestly. Like he said in the video, DDJ 400 has 2 channels instead of 4 and only 1 FX wheel on the controller instead of 3. Besides these two things, the DDJ 400 is great for beginners. You can buy 400 and upgrade to 1000/RZ/RZX when time comes or move straight to 1000.
I ultimately chosen the ddj 400 over the ddj sb3 simply because I prefer recordbox over serato. However I did play with the sb3 demo on display at guitar center and found the sb3 was a little more durable than the 400.
Good choice, I have a 400 myself and use Rekordbox myself and I find that it pretty much has all you need. You will be able to keep it for as long as possible being as alot of the things that you can do on it you can pretty much do on the cdjs but only thing that is a con are the jog wheels. You can't really do long backspins but there are ways around that on the mixer
I am going to buy a console in 2 months or so. I think that the 400 is the best option but there is an older one that you have reviewed previously the RB. The RB has the fx in a different location more convinient to use. So I have to ask you which one do you suggest for a begginer dj
@DJ Carlo Atendido should I get a more complex Dj console and not DDJ400 as a beginner? I m thinking that a more complex one will be more fun and useful to use on a long term 🤔
Got the silver edition ddj400. Such a slick looking controller. Spotify stopped letting djapp use their music. So now I’m on the hunt for a new way to get music to mix. Any recommendations?
I kinda want the 400, I have the sb3, sb3 has a cool feature with the 3 fx pans on each deck. That makes mixing so much easier. Also I really love the Autoloop button. But you cannot use it on Record Box that’s so idiotic
Kuya Dj Carlo Atendido pagka bibili ba po ba ng Isa sa mga controller nayan ay kailangan ba talaga ng software sa dalawa na yan? Like Rekordbox and Serato? Pano po magka roon ng software na ganyan? May bayad po ba kuya? Bibilhin ba ang mga software na yan? O baka may libre pa install po ba yan na mga software na yan?
DDJ-400 all the way, the fact that it comes with a full-featured pro-DJ software right out the box and has design similarities to club standard CDJ/DJM set-ups means that moving to professional equipment will be smoother and more intuitive.

$100 to upgrade to Serato pro
Total:. $350
Vs
$250 for a DDJ 400 with full Rekordbox
$100 for a hard case, headphones, laptop stand, longer audio cables

Einstein X -- I want to see that video too!! Please make one!
I'm not that creative with video so I think it wont be any good. There's a video on my "channel" though of me using it.
For my own ,I chose ddj 400 the évolution of Rb. Rekordbox is powerfull and advanced
DDJ SB3 for the win and Ilove it.
Was looking at these two and wondering which one to buy for Christmas this vid has pretty much summed up which one I’m gonn get now. Ty so much man
the only gripe I have with the sb3 is that if you use the controller with Serato DJ lite first, when you upgrade to pro the bottom 4 pads are mapped out the same as in Serato DJ Lite, so you have to re midi map them, which can be stressful for a beginner.
Thanks Carlo for d comparison/reviews of ds two dj controllers... thumbs up to you man...
I bet to disagree on the effects..yes you can only run 1 effect per deck on ddj 400, however remember you can use the fx Pad to assign the other effects..
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! Woot woot!
CAN I USED DDJ SB3 WITH REKORD BOX SOFTWARE ?
I got the DDJ-SB3 and the DDJ-SR2 very good controllers
I ended up getting the SB3 and it should arrive tomorrow.
The only thing that has me worried is I've never played with any DJ software before, so I'm unsure if Ive made the correct choice.
As long as I get to mix some bluezy tunes together I'm happy tho.
@@djcarlo
Well I love it haha, very easy to get right into mixing songs.
Definitely is alot to take in but Ill get it figured out with enough practice.
Ultimate Powa Yeah man I got Serato DJ Suite when the whole package was 50% during Black Friday. I have been eyeballing the SB3. I need a DJ Controller.
I have also been eyeballing the JBL PartyBox 300 or Soundboks 2.
with sterato lite you could record your mix with software like obs or audacity if you have an dedicated audio interface.
Thanks for sharing that!
any mic/interfaces like zoom H5 or H6 would do the job
Bro me and my ate bought the pioneer package(ddj-400, dm-40, hdjx5). Thanks for all your reviews. Excited af! tugs tugs!
I'm new in this topic. I decided to buy DDJ-400 thanks for guide
@giorgi
I own a PIONEER DDJ-400 ..I think DDJ-400 is much better than other controller in this price range.
I use SB3 with Virtual DJ Pro Infinity. It's fun. VDJ is lightweight and doesn't have any problems. 🙃
Same, though I noticed latency when using the sb3 soundcard because it's not using asio. I had it setup with asio4all and all sound/latency problems were fixed.
For a beginner dj which one would you recommend from this list?
1. DENON MC4000
2. PIONEER DDJ 400
3. PIONEER DDJ SB3
4. TRAKTOR S2 MK3
Woot! Woot! I made a similar list on this video: ua-cam.com/video/J5qJ05GPDuo/v-deo.html One in those in your list is my number 1 pick.
#2
I do the same.
You can even map both to the keyboard section. Like top pads for KB, bottom for slicer.
Amazing Video!
Great vid.
Carlo thanks for this review, I know pioneer is dropping a new version of the 400 in silver color and now you can mix from Spotify what do you think?
Moisés O'Hara you sure?
I bought a DDJ 400 because is more confortable for my stile, and have a program(little difficult at the first impact) but not need to be upgrade and you can use license code in two PC to have a possibility to connect a home PC and portale PC(for example)
It all boils down to which one is more for you!
@@djcarlo that is my upgrade because when I was young i used a "Numark party mix" and i love it because is soo easy to use but web you press a button you listen it when you mix because is total plastica, but for 50$ (2013) it was a good investiment to start and what is a console
I bought the DDJ-400 yesterday! For now i really like it :)
You can get all the mentioned missing features on the SB3 if you use Virtual DJ instead of serato. Very easy to set up on Virtual Dj too.
I am starting DJing. I bought a ddj 200, but in future I will surely buy a 400
That's nice! Go for it!
@@djcarlo for sure
Thanks for the advice, Carlo. In my opinion, DDJ-400 is a more profitable purchase. Full serato for $ 129 plus quite expensive SB3 disqualifies the latter. I buy the first one. ;)
How many comments does this dude heart
All of them, yes!
I started with the RB which is the same as DDJ 400. Now I have a ddj rr which is great! Good video👍
Hi Dj Carlo ! Nice Vid !
Yohh ddj-400 can only mix 2 songs? While in sb3 can do 4 songs? Is that correct?
Good vid man! I prefer the DDJ-RB cause it's something between these two and with Rekordbox
Shoutout to Carlo I just purchased the pioneer ddj sb3 Serato Dj lite which laptop is good to use for this program
I'd recommend the XMG DJ 15, but it's out of stock now. A Macbook Air should be okay!
I like the DDJ-400 most because it mirrors Pioneers flagship CDJ and DJM. And it will make it easier for you to go over from the 400 to a more pro set.
@@djcarlo No problem it was an awesome video :)
Just bought a 400 for my stay at home enjoyment!
i like the both controllers, Im planning to buy that DDj-SB3 maybe i prefer the DDJ-SB3 as a beginner. and i dont which is the best sofware because i always use serato. but thanks for the information DJ Carlo Atendido
Great Vid! Would love to see a comparison video like this but for the DDJ-1000 vs DDJ-SX3! :)
Which one is more compatible with Virtual DJ8 according to your opinion? Thnx !
I ultimately chosen the ddj 400 over the ddj sb3 simply because I prefer recordbox over serato. However I did play with the sb3 demo on display at guitar center and found the sb3 was a little more durable than the 400.
Interesting take on it Whitney! But yeah, ultimately, it will come down too to which program you prefer.
You're the best bro and I'm really enjoying every single one of your videos great job❤️
Can't you use Rekordbox with the SB3??? If that's the main selling point of the 400, why not let ppl know you can also get it for the SB3?
I'm yet to get my first ever DJ controller. saving up for DDJ-400. Great video #DJ Carlo..
What a great review m8
I am going to buy a console in 2 months or so. I think that the 400 is the best option but there is an older one that you have reviewed previously the RB. The RB has the fx in a different location more convinient to use. So I have to ask you which one do you suggest for a begginer dj
If you have no experience I definitely suggest the SB3. Pad scratch and FX fade are geared towards beginner DJs
Nice, this is really informative. Great as a beginner’s guide on picking their first equipment.
Great job my idol😎
Great review. Keep it up!!
I have the ddj sb3 and I love it
That's awesome Jaybeats! Glad you're still loving it!
I am never a fan of paying extra for software that should be available from the start. I purchased the DDJ 400 and enjoyed it.
Thanks, this video helped alot
@DJ Carlo Atendido should I get a more complex Dj console and not DDJ400 as a beginner? I m thinking that a more complex one will be more fun and useful to use on a long term 🤔
go for what you think is best for you!
Got the silver edition ddj400. Such a slick looking controller. Spotify stopped letting djapp use their music. So now I’m on the hunt for a new way to get music to mix. Any recommendations?
Record pools! So many of them have great tracks in high quality. Check out Crate Connect, Zip DJ, and BPM Supreme 😆
DDj-sb3 FTW thanks dj carlo
Just buy it
Sir please please tell me ddj sb3 and ddj 400 who is better...🙋
I kinda want the 400, I have the sb3, sb3 has a cool feature with the 3 fx pans on each deck. That makes mixing so much easier. Also I really love the Autoloop button. But you cannot use it on Record Box that’s so idiotic
Pioneer gate keeps some of their stuff just so they can get people to switch over to Rekordbox hehe
DEAR CARLO DDJ 400 OR DDJ RR WICH IS YOUR PREFER PERSONALY?
Kuya Dj Carlo Atendido pagka bibili ba po ba ng Isa sa mga controller nayan ay kailangan ba talaga ng software sa dalawa na yan? Like Rekordbox and Serato?
Pano po magka roon ng software na ganyan? May bayad po ba kuya? Bibilhin ba ang mga software na yan? O baka may libre pa install po ba yan na mga software na yan?
I just got the sb3 I highly recommend it easy to use and dj lite now allows you to use 4 cue points
