I love your content. Started DJ’ing back in ‘83 and was very slow to move off vinyl. Your channel has helped me embrace the digital side a lot more easily. Thanks!
That's cool. I started in the early 80s. I made mix tapes with a soundesign double deck and sing turntable stereo that my mom bought for me at Kmart. I made so many mix tapes and saved enough to buy a mixer and two 1200's and then came all the vinyl and more vinyl. You get the idea...crates of vinyl. DJ Carlo! I just started my own business DJ’ing events and weddings after 15 years doing it underneath an ad agency/event promoter. The difference in revenue is insane. But also, there is so. Much. Work. To do in regards to creating/promoting/maintaining my brand. I went from avoiding social media, to scheduled content creation. Any chance you would consider making a video on things to avoid when promoting yourself?
It's really difficult as different territories will have different promotion styles and audience reception. I'd say, just keep the content coming, have a good attitude towards things, and take the criticism if any and roll along with it! Attitude is king when promoting yourself 😊
i usually use the transition at 10:30 when i get a sudden request, just scan the waveforms of both songs for the breakdown and either vinyl brake or hard cut
Nice video. As a starting DJ I have to say the best way to start DJing is probably just play around and try to mix so ga to begin with. Almost every point you made are things I found out by just messing around. For me, it makes it much harder when I approach it like a study and the problems and answers are told. But that's my advice to other starting DJ's. Useful content nonetheless!
That's actually how I discovered all of these tricks! All playing around, but honestly, I feel like I wasted so much time doing so. That's why i try to teach them via these tutorials instead; a lit path is better than an obscured one
I appreciate you and your content very much! I aim to DJ my own tunes someday, and your hard work helps teach me so hopefully I won't completely bomb :)
when doing the sync transition, i like to turn off master tempo/keylock/pitch n time (whatever it is in your software lol) to make it more apparent to the audience that im transitioning a huge difference
Love the 3/4 Roll transition! Got a bit confused at 15:50 by the formula showing Slow > Fast, then the first example on the decks goes is Fast>Slow 🤔 I'm assuming this works just as well going from Fast > Slow by dividing by 1.5 eg 120>80bpm 🙂 Should the Echo be on 3/4 too?

Akl good except of the Pioneer console. I have one that broke down. They told me they won't cover the warranty bcs I took it to a non official repair center, even though they don't have an official repair center on the island I live in listed on their website...so they refused any responsibility and told me to f. off basically and the console worth 500 pounds is now an expensive brick. Started mixing back in 1996 and was lucky to have SL Technics 1210s. Most Djs of today dont know the struggle of locking a mix with the pitch. Cant stand people that use a sync button as its just a lazy way of mixing 😔
Hey Carlo Can you explain why you mix 130 bpm with 87 bpm? This is a half of 174 BPM and If I undestand we can mix with a halfs like 140 with 70, 160 with 80.
Make sure to watch the last part very closely because we have to apply math to do a transition between 130 to 87. There’s a formula there on how to get it right. But yes, we can transition from 160 to 80 or 65 to 130 as they are half numbers!
@@djcarlo I watched the ending but I still don't understand where 87bpm came from, since the formula is 130 divided by 0.75 gives 174 bpm, should I understand that 174 bpm is the same as half of 174, i.e. 87 bpm? so we can make this transition from 130 to 87 and also to 174 bpm, right?
Yes, absolutely! Since 87 is half of 174, both are applicable BPMs to mix to when it comes to that 3/4 loop trick. So you can go to either Dnb or Hip Hop should you please 🥳
I've already ran it through filters! I'll look into it though, I know there's some sibilance when I say things, but that might be my, you know, actual voice haha...
Hello Sir, Can you please make a video on how to shift from ddjs to cdj's. Especially how to read waveforms, coz in laptop it's very easy because of the stacked waveforms and hitting the cue points is easier.
2 things, 1 I'm not using software to tell me when to mix, that's to be determined live. Second how does Skrillex use ColorFX on CDJs? A lot of times you give tips on using these techniques in the software but completely ignore how to do them in a club with CDJ's and a USB stick. I know some things can't be done on CDJ's like stems but I would really appreciate if in future videos you also cover how to perform these techniques on pro gear as well or at least provide a work around. I love your stuff man but some of us might already be playing in clubs on pro gear but still want to step up our game by watching your videos, and it's almost useless to learn these on a flx4. P.S. I do have a flx4 but I also have a DDJ-XZ in my studio as well so I basically practice on a pro set up. P.P.S the sync trick is one of my favorites, it shows that these tools can be used creatively. It's so nice to control both tracks BPM with one fader, I did this trick a few weeks ago at the biggest show I've played so far which was on 4 CDJ 3000's and a JBL 8 piece line array with 8 FOH subs, and SUB 3 stacks on stage as monitors, it was so dope!!
Skrillex uses the color FX available on certain mixers, like the DJM 900 nexus. Just gotta check which models your venues have! And the cue points are just a guide really. You can opt to not use them, and go live, just like what we've all been doing! I'd like to think of the cue points are training wheels for those who are new to DJing 😊
@@djcarlo dude the color fx are just built into the 900? da fuq I gotta figure that out but I don't have a mixer available to me just my xdj system . thanks for the response. you're the man!
Hey man really useful vid!! Question: For the last technique with the 3/4 roll transition, you say that you have to use the formula and then mix for example track from 90 BPM to 120 BPM. But in all your examples you are mixing tracks to lower BPM than the current one (For example 130 BPM to 90). Am i missing something ?
Just a little more math! 90 is 180 half timed, so you can mix to 3/4 of 180, which is 120. 120 is also 4/3 of 90, so it works that way by some mathematical properties whose names I forget (transitive?, or something)
Hi Carlo! Great video as always! I just have one question: I’m using rekordbox for djing and I notice that my Stems aren’t so “clean”, is there a way to improve them?
Hi Dj Darlo, I've been watching a lot of your videos, and have a Denon SC Live 2 which has Serato DJ Pro. With the 3/4 loop, in another video, you mentioned that 1/2 may be used too although this may be out of date now. Does Serato have a 3/4 loop? Also, if you engage the 3/4 loop on a sonically suitably point, if the songs are not beat matched, how are you figuring out when to start the next song so it is in time?
Check out my House to Dnb video for the full explanation Daniel! Serato does, technically, but it's in the Looper FX. That's also explained in that video. 1/2 can be used only if you're half-timing or double timing your mixes. The 3/4 one is something completely different
Yeah so many videos seen how to mix, but always with house/Techno Music. Easy because less vocals and nearly same BPM/Basses. But at a party where you have to mix Abba into Red hot chilli peppers thats never seen on youtube ... I like you videos but normal (Radio) music mixing would be interesting.
I've done a video on mixing songs with no intros, and I usually use house as it's a great genre for beginners to learn on. Great for practice as well. Most other genres can be learned from these basic transitions 🥳
DJCarlo, I have a 10 year old who wants to learn to DJ. He has a DDJ flx-4, but I don't know how to get him playing, he really wants to start. Can you tell me what version of rekordbox is good and what can I use for him to have music? Trying to keep it under $25 a month, but I want to support him. I feel like a fish staring into the void, and I do not know what direction to go. Thanks! I would appreciate any direction.
That's a lot more complicated that what I'm used to. There's a little bit of production that goes on behind it, and knowing the nature of Fred Again's performances, the live pads could change per performance, which makes it hard to nail down in a video. I'll try to give it a shot though if I can get it nailed down!
Unfortunately, Crate Connect requires a pro license to subscribe… Also, to hype up a buildup, you can also 1/8 loop roll w/ echo like what Hardwell does
@@djcarlo video was good thanks. I've been djing for 35 years I'm a vinyl DJ so when it comes to digital djing and using effects I don't have a clue as there's so many to choose from. I use the echo out pad fx and the HP Echo too and Flanger a bit. But never used the echo properly or in combo
Theyre technically wrong haha. Many DJ programs only read to 140bpm, so you'll need to manually double time the song beyond that. Lots of 141 and up are read at 70.5 etc
@@djcarloOh really?. mmm...I think I have to save money to buy DJ equipment🤔. What DJ equipment is suitable for beginners?🙏. Don't make the ones that are too expensive sir😅, just the cheap ones😁

You'll need to look around the internet for copyright free music! I forgot where I got some of mine, or what they were even originally called haha, but a quick search should do the trick!
@dj Carlo I recently copied your pad effects in rekordbox and I really love them. I cannot figure out how to get them to work on my newly purchased XDJ-RX3. Would have an idea as to how to do this? 😝
@@djcarlo yes! No laptop, just plugging in my USB and going. All my tracks are keyed and prepped in rekord alongside my effects I referenced above! Thanks for the reply man!
I have a question! The method B transition you show at 11:55, I noticed both tracks low EQ are neutral, I thought that you should never have both songs low EQ up at the same time because it drowns out the low ends out both and sounds bad? Is this true?
Ideally, yes, don't keep the lows together. It's not a deal breaker for mixing, especially while practicing, but it makes a difference in clubs. For here, i tried to keep things simple, so I didn't change it
Man... Dj Carlo for the last few years has really got me to a point where I'm gonna jump ship from Traktor... Don't get me wrong, it's a good platform, but definitely lacking in comparison.
In future videos that you have a full sentence could you maybe leave it up on the screen longer? There’s not enough time to process and YEAH I know I can rewind it but it really makes your videos and learning process unenjoyable when you have great content… I also don’t read slow and have 3 degrees… we just need a couple more seconds plz…
I'll keep that in mind for future videos. I leave them up for as long as I'm talking, and i thought I was going at a pretty steady pace already for this video. Thanks for the feedback!

Just brilliant!!👊🏽
Good stuff right? Sometimes the basics are all we need!
Absolutely, get any basics right & the rest can flow!
Yo Carlo! Your mix of your voice in this video needs a D-esser
Great idea maybe I should get into doing that!
@@djcarlo thank you sir
this aint no beginner shit…..my brain is fried 😂 but good stuff though!!!!
Hahahaha, thats why it says IF beginners did this. But give them a shot! What seems like magic now, will be habits tomorrow
Man needs a vinyl sesh.
It's bizarre how I keep getting these comments when some of these techniques were passed down from the days of vinyl. Can't please everyone I guess! 😞
Thank you!
You’re very welcome. Good luck with everything DJ related!
@@djcarlo thank you so much! You don't know how much that means coming from you!
Nice video, could you do a video about flanger, because I think most DJs (including me) don't know how to use it
Haha, I think its somewhat overused! What would you like to know about flanger?
@@djcarlo yeah it's overused so like when to use it for a good sound not like the Paris Hilton Levels🤣
Unfortunately no. Rekordbox's stems aren't exactly the cleanest, so they've still gotta work on that aspect
What device did you use in this video?
That's the FLX4 haha
I still dont get what happens when you move the wheel?
It nudges the track back or forth. Micro adjustments in case the songs aren't completely in sync
Cool stuff
Right? Great for practice and whatnot 🥳
Hi Dj Darlo,
I've been watching a lot of your videos, and have a Denon SC Live 2 which has Serato DJ Pro.
Is it possible with DJ Studio to export the playlists with the hot cue for traktor?
Unfortunately no. DJ.Studio only really works with hot cues for Rekordbox
Get Rekordbox DJ 7, then join get Tidal for his streaming needs!
@@djcarlo thanks, his jaw dropped when you responded. Thanks for helping a new generation get into the groove.
Any way to so a video about Fred Again's setup? With the live pad performance and all that?
That's a lot more complicated that what I'm used to. There's a little bit of production that goes on behind it, and knowing the nature of Fred Again's performances, the live pads could change per performance, which makes it hard to nail down in a video. I'll try to give it a shot though if I can get it nailed down!
I tried enabling the cfx on the vacant deck but it seems like it doesn't detect it when I go to use it. Have the same mixer as well.
Make sure to press the cfx you want and make sure it’s blue! Watch that section closely!!
Unfortunately, Crate Connect requires a pro license to subscribe…
Also, to hype up a buildup, you can also 1/8 loop roll w/ echo like what Hardwell does
Does it?! Well, my workaround is just to put in random information. Don't let it deter you from kickstarting your career!
Thanks
For sure! Hope you learned something new from the video buddy!
Thanks Carlo ;)
You're very welcome! More of these coming soon as always!
What DnB is 87 BPM? Am I missing something, or are the numbers in the video wrong?
Theyre technically wrong haha. Many DJ programs only read to 140bpm, so you'll need to manually double time the song beyond that. Lots of 141 and up are read at 70.5 etc
Emm.. sir... can you make a tutorial for virtual DJ? I'm still learning to DJ on vdj using keyboard & mouse 🙏😅
You will learn the basic with keyboard and laptop but you can maximize the power of VDJ via console.
If I did, I'd highly recommend getting a controller still! There's so much more you can do with one 🥳
@@djcarloOh really?. mmm...I think I have to save money to buy DJ equipment🤔.
What DJ equipment is suitable for beginners?🙏.
Don't make the ones that are too expensive sir😅, just the cheap ones😁
@@VIDEOMAZTERyeah, I've learned a little about beat matching, looping, creative mix... it's really hard to control on the keyboard & mouse😢. but I keep learning even though it's difficult😁🔥🔥
@@zhev7 Pioneer. Its handy on controller. But sometimes you can combine both to be more effective (controller and laptop). I speak for myself but of course DJ Carlo is on a higher level 🫡
Hey Carlo! Amazing video. How do we get the 1/2 Echo effect started?
You just need to press your FX button or toggle the paddle, depending on the kind of gear you're using
This video is priceless!! Thank you Carlo!!
Great to hear!! Hope you apply these tricks!
@@djcarlo I definitely will!
thank you
You're very welcome! Hope you learned a few new things
Always following you my friend…all the best from philippines :)
Thanks Jeryl! Hope the heat back home isn't too wild!
Hello. Thank you for the video. where can a DJ get music to create sets on UA-cam? so that there are no problems with copyright?
You'll need to look around the internet for copyright free music! I forgot where I got some of mine, or what they were even originally called haha, but a quick search should do the trick!
Would absolutely love if you could make one of these videos on the numark mixstream pro 🙏
Maybe one day I will!
@@djcarlo thank you dj carlo for all that you do, your videos have helped me tremendously!
@dj Carlo I recently copied your pad effects in rekordbox and I really love them.
I cannot figure out how to get them to work on my newly purchased XDJ-RX3. Would have an idea as to how to do this? 😝
Oh man, the RX3 might be a little bit different. Are you using it in standalone mode?
Oh believe me, I'm a Traktor user by heart, but they haven't been updating much lately, hence the lack of any tutorials there haha
He does go really fast almost as if this was a tiktak video
How does the math work when working downwards from 130.50 to 87 bpm? I can’t figure it out
Same way! They actually go both ways as long as you still loop the previous track in a beat-less area
DJ Carlo, i looked up your Zero to Hero course, you mentioned two controllers that work with the course. But i only see the FLX4.
Can i not use DDJ400, by the way?
You can! In fact, the DDJ 400 was what I based most of the course around
i do my mixes using computer virtual dj.
VDJ works wonders with controllers too!
