      Reading this thread cracked me up😂 Yorkshire is a county within England. So there are lots of cities and towns within the county like Bradford for example (which I’m assuming is why you’ve heard of Yorkshire bcos of Zayn, or Doncaster bcos of Louis) my accent is like a jumbled up mix of Yorkshire and other northern accents! Hope that made sense 💚

    This came at just the perfect time for me ahahah! I’ve only started getting into doing covers and I’ve been recording them and just not uploading because I want them to be the best they can be before I actually put them out there, but i was wondering do you have any advice on getting yourself “out there” if you will as a person just starting out making and actually uploading covers and stuff?? I’d really love the advice!! Thanks so much for this video btw, I used to look at your old version of this religiously so I got so excited seeing this in my description box hahahah xxx

    • @shelleymill
      @shelleymill  6 років тому +18

      Awww girl I spent years doing that - recording and not uploading! Perfectionism is both a blessing and a curse! But I can honestly say uploading was the best thing I ever did, and once you’ve done it it’s like what was I so worried about? As for getting yourself out there it’s such a tough one, I was making videos for about a year before they started getting much of any attention. You’ve got to be persistent and not disheartened if it takes a while! I’ve still got sooooo far to go and I’ve been doing this ages now but I love it and that’s the most important thing. Whatever you do, don’t spam advertise yourself on other people’s channels because it’s just kinda annoying for creators who’ve build their channels up for other people to think it’s ok to fill your comments with self promo if that makes sense? Plus youtube will automatically mark your comments as spam and they’ll stop showing up on channels anyway and you don’t want that! It’s totally cool to see a cover you like and leave them a personalised comment of what you enjoyed and how much you’d appreciate a bit of feedback from them, but not just a copied and pasted thing to every channel! That way you can kinda build friendships and connections with UA-camrs on a similar journey to you and you can support each other and help each other grow, collab etc! Try and keep up to date on current songs too & hashtagging on instagram is a great way to promote yourself too 💚 thanks so much for your support and I hope that helps you out x

    • @jennymurphy2666
      @jennymurphy2666 6 років тому +5

      Shelley Mill thank you so much for taking the time to write that! And yes I’ve noticed before creators get annoyed by spam comments, I can honestly understand why, taking the time to create something and put your heart into it for someone to just try to use it to their advantage can be so disheartening! Thanks so much again, lots of love xxx

    I have a few questions. Do you _need_ a microphone to edit and sing? Do you think it is necessary? I also love the idea of starting a singing channel but I’m not ready to show my face to the world. Any tips? I’m still also quite confused about how to use the editing programs.
    Thank you for this video as it helped so much! I would love it if you answered some of my questions.

    • @shelleymill
      @shelleymill  6 років тому +17

      No as mentioned you don’t NEED a microphone, it just makes the quality a whole lot better! It’s definitely harder to get views and stuff if you don’t show your face because I feel like people like to put a face to the performance if that makes sense! Just film when you’re at your most confident, wearing your fave outfit, on a good hair day etc and you’ll naturally feel more open to putting yourself out there. As for the editing programs, it’s definitely a lot of trial and error and just getting used to it, but I can’t explain or demonstrate any better than I did here as everything is explained!💚 glad I could help you💚

    • @shelleymill
      @shelleymill  6 років тому +6

      Tia Chocolate what is your ideal end goal? If you can’t show your face it can only really go so far as people do start to connect with you as a person, your style, your humour and little personal qwerks that can’t show without posting your face if that makes sense! If you’re just doing it for fun and aren’t too bothered about views then you could always just post with an image throughout the whole video, but like I said it can only really get you so far. As long as you keep your personal identity private (so keep where you live, your place of work/education private as well as your personal social media platforms) showing your face in my opinion isn’t dangerous. But I totally respect what your parents say if you’re young! Maybe speak to them and explain? If it’s something you’re really passionate about they might rethink! Hope that helps 💚

As long as you're enjoying making videos and are happy with them don't worry about the views, they'll come in time it took me ages to start getting regular views! Have a little confidence in yourself and keep working on your voice if you're not happy with it. And don't worry about equipment either, you just need your voice and something to film yourself with to start off with! Remind me when you upload & I'll for sure check your videos out xx

That’s one thing I just don’t want to mention because they all have a risk involved where viruses are concerned.. so I don’t wanna recommend one to anyone and be responsible for someone wrecking their computer in a way if you get me?? Just do your research and look for the reviews to make sure you’re choosing a safe one 💚

    you should also be careful because some artists who own the rights to their own music (as opposed to the record company owning them) can have really strict rules, like the eagles for example. I’ve gotten copyright strikes before for posting covers. Although there are distribution sites that you can get the rights to post so that you’re legally in the clear

      Shelley Mill even if they are bigger channels where you are getting the karaoke to do the covers? So as long as you write that you do not own it and where you got it from you wouldn’t get copyrighted and you still get paid? Thank you

      So you dont need mechanical/sync licenses?Also do you need extra permission to record the backing tracks from the owner,as I'm aware that when purchasing backing tracks,you are purchasing the licence to use it,but in a lot of cases,this doesn't include the rights to record the track?which site would you recommend for using backing tracks for you tube please?

    Hi Shelley, this was extremely helpful(I came over here from your oldie tutorial). I'm very new to making covers and have recently revamped my method to be more professional. I wanted to know if you have a good way to find instrumentals for less popular or non-mainstream songs and also what you mean exactly by asking permission before posting a cover. Couldn't that take weeks to never to hear a response from a popular artist? Thanks in advance and if it's a long answer feel free to DM me.
    -Frie

    • @shelleymill
      @shelleymill  6 років тому

      Glad I could help! I literally just search UA-cam for instrumentals or I make my own. As for permission, you don’t need to ask the artist as youtube already has that covered when you upload and the rights can go to them automatically, you need to have permission from the instrumental creator and you’ll find they either state generally that they give permission for people to use them for covers, or just comment on their video asking for permission if not :)

    Hi Shelley, thank you for such detailed video. I have a question, it might sound super silly but do you actually record the audio and video at the same time? I know you mentioned about the clapping thing, but for a very long time I thought you record the vocals first and then the video some other time, and super impose the clapping, but I’m super lost, unless I got the entire thing wrong and you actually record audio and video at the same time. Please let me know.
    P.S. I loveeee your covers and you are such an inspiration to me

    Hey! I wanted to know something, so if you cover a song using the soundtrack, or even a karaoke video you find on UA-cam. Can you put the soundtrack or the karaoke version on your UA-cam cover, like obviously giving credit. Because I recently started playing guitar, but I’m not as good YET, so I want to do UA-cam covers, but I’m not sure if I could😬 If you could help me with this, I would be so grateful!💕

      @@shelleymill hahaha totally understand! Also do you have any tips for how you record your video for a cover with respect to the precorded audio componenet? I have watched so many videos, but people tend to graze over that detail which I think is super important. For example I use pre-recorded audio for my covers so when I am creating my cover video, let's say, how would I use the pre-recorded audio in context of using it to record the video. Play the audio off my laptop while I lip sync...I have seen people clap at the beginning of their video and audio to sync up the two parts but if you don't start the pre-recorded audio for your video right after you clap it's the same issue all over again! I have tried to get this all on sync but my lips are often not in sync with the audio and it looks awful 😒 Sorry for the very long comment, but I greatly appreciate your help! (:
