I wonder how it works when artists sing covers during their live shows... Also I would love to hear you narrate an audiobook. Your voice is just so easy to listen to.
Wouldn't you rather hear Mary's cover of "Love to Love You Baby" or perhaps a disco version of "Venus in Furs" by the Velvet Underground than narrate an audiobook?
Honestly no. I admire her musical talents and skills, but don't care for her singing voice. She has a naturally deeper voice that is smooth and melodic when she speaks, but when she sings, she uses falsetto and her natural voice disappears somewhere. So if I had to choose, I prefer narration and video essays over her singing. With that said, I think she's a very talented artist and lots of people like her singing, as they should.
As to royalties paid to the songwriter for live performances usually the promoter or venue pays ASCAP/BMI/SESAC a fee per event or song for the performing artist's use of the songwriter's material. This would include an artist's cover of material. ASCAP.BMI/SESAC then pays the songwriter for each use of their original material What arrangement UA-cam, as the technical "venue" has with ASCAP/ BMI/ SESAC I have no idea.
It used to be (and I don't know if it is still true) that if you sing any song even your own during a live show you are supposed to submit the list to whichever body controls compensating the artist for the use of the song. I remember reading an interesting interview with Keith Jagger where the Stones realised they were being ripped off by the process each time they played gigs (along with being ripped off by merchandisers) and took the whole process in house in effect paying themselves to play their own songs rather than a third party collecting the revenue on their behalf and deducting a fee for doing so. All of this is iirc. Funny old world the music biz,

Wow this was a great video Mary! I have tried getting answers on how to be allowed to do covers, and hadn't thought of doing it on UA-cam. You've not only answered questions for me, but also given me an additional idea with UA-cam. Thanks tons! You Rock!

Always a inspiration, thank you. I have no musical talent but I do video at events, in particular musical events. Those events include bars and eateries and I would like to persuade the performers to publish on UA-cam. I do try to highly recommend your content to all those folks.
I've posted many covers throughout my youth, and I've found that as long as I include a note in the description stating that the artist, it's label, and all affiliates have the right to the music, then I'm fine! I've seen other people cover the same song, and their videos were removed. Perhaps I'm lucky? But I doubt that. My biggest cover is Invincible by Muse, everyone loved that one for some reason, and UA-cam REALLY let that one go around! Thanks for another informative and well done video, Mary!
A quick question: how do you identify all of those parties easily? When I use Wikipedia, for example, I don’t always see a clear declaration as to copyright ownership/affiliates. Just curious if you know a trick I haven’t stumbled upon. Thx!
@@k2thepeak Hey! That's an excellent question! Personally, when I cover a song, 95% of the time, its' from a band that I consider to be a top favorite. I own all of their CD's. So I'll pull the info from the CD credits itself. It's the label and publisher that you want to get the names of.
Great - makes sense. These days I’m reaching less for CDs and accessing through AppleMusic or similar. I’ll check to see how complete of credits are available when streaming or downloading.
I got to give credit here. Been in the industry 32 years and signed to numerous majors and the info you have given out is spot on especially the history section.
Thanks for the insight. As cover musicians, it's nice to know that, even though we may interpret the music [original music] differently, we can still get paid for our creative license!
Thanks for posting this. I've been thinking about starting to post videos, and most of them would be covers, so this was informative and encouraging. Now I just need some equipment and a spine. 😁
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience on this topic because every other video I’ve watched has been so unclear. This has been the most direct in answering this question.
Thank you so much for answering so many of my questions and alleviating my fears as well. I've wondered at least a million times how people are making lyric videos of someone else's song????? But I think I get it now. Thanks.
I love all of your work and the honesty that comes from it all. Thank you for sharing and offering some killer advice. I’m waiting for your tour and next original LP. Keep doing what you do best. You!
Great video. My brothers and I love doing cover songs for fun, and it has gained us lots of followers. The only strike we received was from an Eagles cover. Such great music that they won't allow others to play.
Your experience mirrors my own in many ways. For example: I also had a Prince cover removed around that same time. However, I haven't joined the UA-cam partner program, and maybe I should. Didn't think I could make any money on the covers. Could be a game changer. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I'm very impressed with your skills as a musician, song writer and a beautiful person with a lovely voice. And now you have taken it up to another level. Your teaching skills are excellent. I'm sure that is aided by loving the sound of your voice. Oh yeah and the fact that you are quite beautiful. Keep your dreams alive and thriving and know that you are loved
Thank you Mary, always so informative. I have done a heap of covers, around half have copyright claims, but I'm yet to get an actual strike. After reading a few comments here, I thought I'd share the second line which can be clearly read in each description of my videos is "All rights remain reserved by the respective owners."
I have recorded a few covers and none of them have been blocked. But strangely, I did a cover of Day Tripper, but a karaoke company claimed ownership of it - as if I had used their backing track. I found their backing track and it doesn’t sound anything like the recording I made. I don’t know how to explain it. But the ad revenue should be going to the real author, not the karaoke company.
I love the sound of your voice, your range, the resonance in the lower registers, your facility in jumping across octaves. I was once in a band where the singer would talk endlessly on the mic. Finally, one day, our drummer yelled out, “Shut up and sing!” Okay, it’s not that bad with you, but like I said, I’m here for your extraordinary singing and songwriting. You’re just terrific, really.
Mary I think you would be great on Post Modern Jukebox. Build that Spender brand. Also, if you're in the mood, maybe do a little Freebird. Hearken back to when you first left the UK for the City of Angels.
I started my channel 3-24 to upload cover songs that I play guitar and sing, for my grandchildren to enjoy. They are my biggest fans. Anyway I started to get some down votes and copyright claims on some of the Beatle songs and Elton John. After they had already been up for weeks. So youtube now says they are partially blocked and not available to view in the US. I'm 68 yo and far from anything ever being monetized. It was a big deal to figure out how to record with my phone and start a youtube channel. (Some Other Old Guy) Seems other people don't have this problem. Every video I do has dozens of similar youtube videos. Not sure what to do.
Great video Mary, I'm a few weeks off 70 and for me, Utube covers have re-introduced me to songs which have passed me by somehow. I have been a Dylan fan for many years but it was Rena Del Cid's cover of When I Paint My Masterpiece that awakened me to that song.. Heyde Bluegrass Orchestras cover Dylans Senor track (I actually have the vynil Desire album that it came from but it slipped under my radar. That cover made me delve back into the song and understand the lyrics better. It also instilled a love of Bluegrass which led me to Billy Strings and his cover of Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick which I hadnt listened to since my teans, That lead to me adding several Tull albums to my collection. Sammy Copleys cover of Leonard Cohen's Famous Grey Raincoat (its absolutely lovely) led to me adding several Cohen songs to my collection, It works the other way too, I now have all Rena Del Cid (Elle Cordova) albums as well as Mandolin Orange (Whathouse) full back catalogue and 2 Billy strings albums. so its win win as far as Im cincerned 👍

@@k2thepeak Yea its great to still have them around! Keep doing you thing dude!
I love some many cover versions you have done! I love a lot of your own songs too!
Thanks!
Thanks so much, very generous of you!
Excellent post. Thanks!
Very insightful. Thanks, Mary!
I got to give credit here. Been in the industry 32 years and signed to numerous majors and the info you have given out is spot on especially the history section.
Thanks. This clears a lot of questions up for me
very interesting insight into 'how it all works'. Thanks for the schooling!
Wow, I had never seen your old videos and it’s crazy to notice that you have not changed at all
Thanks! Great Info. Its fun to see you with other You Tube artists... Small World!
Always a good listen...
Things we question but know very little about. Thanks for passing your study and info on to us. Great channel.
Thank you so much for answering so many of my questions and alleviating my fears as well. I've wondered at least a million times how people are making lyric videos of someone else's song????? But I think I get it now. Thanks.
They will be ready when you come to town. Good informative vid for those thinking about it
I love all of your work and the honesty that comes from it all. Thank you for sharing and offering some killer advice. I’m waiting for your tour and next original LP. Keep doing what you do best. You!
Mary is a great talent (and has the best eyebrows on UA-cam!). Looking forward to seeing her on tour later in the year!
Thanks!
Very insightful video.
Thank you for uploading this.
Excellent video, Mary. Thanks for all your research and knowledge. Many need this information.
Great video always! Taking a peek at your Ableton course too - sounds fantastic!
Thanks!
Thank you for posting this!!
very good video, might be worth supporting on patreon or wherever!
Subscribed because I saw another video you did earlier. Your voice is amazing and you're a good teacher. Thanks happy to help you get to one million.
Very interesting. Thank you!
Thank you for educating us,.
Mary I think you would be great on Post Modern Jukebox. Build that Spender brand. Also, if you're in the mood, maybe do a little Freebird. Hearken back to when you first left the UK for the City of Angels.
There was that one girl that did an amazing singer/songwriter version of Toxic. My absolute favorite version of that one.
Amazingly generous sharing this insight thank you!
Great video! Thanks Mary!
I will get back to this one.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing. I had been very curious! :)
Thank you for this video. You are lovely to listen to :) As we post a lot of covers since the beginning of 2024, you grabbed my attention. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing all this info Mary, especially your personal financial info!
Bring back guitar stories 💙
Thanks for the insight Mary, very informative 👍🏻😊
Brilliant video Mary. Thanks for the info.
Thank you. You've answered some questions I've had in pondering making Lofi music.
Your videos are great Mary, You always describe in a clear distinctive way. Looking forward to hearing more soon. Thanks again.
Thanks
Thank you so much!
Sammy Copleys cover of Leonard Cohen's Famous Grey Raincoat (its absolutely lovely) led to me adding several Cohen songs to my collection,
It works the other way too, I now have all Rena Del Cid (Elle Cordova) albums as well as Mandolin Orange (Whathouse) full back catalogue and 2 Billy strings albums. so its win win as far as Im cincerned
👍
