  • The story of an early season single track ride turned into a survival situation.
In June of 2024, my friend an I began one of the most challenging single track trails I have ever ridden in the Pacific Northwest. On this early season ride, we will encounter everything from deadfall and water crossings, to snow and high exposure cliffs. Ultimately, one wrong turn will set in stone our fate of sleeping on the trail at nearly 8,000 feet in elevation with temps dropping below freezing that night.
The purpose of creating this mini series is not to glamorize this situation, but to show other single track riders how these situations happen. In terms of what could have gone wrong on this ride, it seems like we had a bit of everything. Lots of lessons to be learned.
Enjoy the video and upcoming episodes.

Idaho Viewers: Please keep trail names / coordinates out of the comments and if anyone wants information email me privately 🤙🏼
EDIT: In response to the high volume of comments about my mirror stem- I do remove it later in the video. Keep in mind the length this ride eventually becomes 30 plus hours and the mirror stem was only there for a brief 25-35ish minutes or so before I removed it. I should have removed it immediately, but I was tired from dragging the bikes under the log and didn't want to pull my tools out. Nonetheless, I should have.

@madjack_757 have you considered carrying a Silky KatanaBoy? I use one every day to clear logs off of our trails in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness where powered saws are prohibited. When sharp, and with a little muscle, they can compete with a chainsaw any day. And they are a fraction of the weight and size.

  • @motosapiens7119
    @motosapiens7119 2 місяці тому +2

I spent the night on the trail not far from where i think that is about 15 years ago. Learned to cut every log unless its a super easy ridearound (no dragging or tag teaming), and just turn around if we run short of daylight or baroil. Most serious riders here ride 2strokes so we never run out of saw gas, but its pretty easy to keep pushing forward until its too late to turn around.

Key items for anyone going into the backcountry. Garmin GPS SOS, Emergency Bivy Kit with compass/blanket/kindling/waterproof matches, medical kit, water filter, insulated jacket with synthetic insulation. These are just the basics. I had my garmin in reach, garmin zumo gps, lighter, small med kit, and a lot of motorcycle repair gear. My bivy was at home, my life straw was at home, my jacket was at home, and my motorcycle jump starter was at home. Those were all things I very much needed. We were very lucky that the water sources we had were very fresh snowmelt and were at high altitudes where animals like beavers and such aren't contaminating the water with giardia. Alot went in our favor considering the situation. The fact that we self rescued was really lucky. Ill get those other episodes out as soon as I can.

I might have. We take this trail for about 13-14 miles and then eventually it became dark and I pulled out my GPS. Then my GPS put us on the "popular" route outta the mountains instead of the quickest. It sent us way deeper into the mountain where things really began to get bad and then we had to spend the night out there. There more episodes comin!

I carry a garmin in reach to communicate with the outside world as well as a garmin zumo gps. In my pack I carry filming gear as well as tools, my sidearm, spare tubes (neither of us ran tubeless), a small first aid kit, and some small survival gear. I also carry a set of spare levers. Though, I really want to emphasize that this trail caught us unprepared. I should have had my bivy, my jumpstarter, and my life straw. By the end of this we were both out of water and drinking from creaks and streams. Must've drank a couple gallons too. Lucked out to be at such a high altitude that giardia wasn't as much of a concern. It was all fresh snow run off.

    • @timbrandt7211

@@madjack_757 wow again! Ok thanks for the honesty. I’m a pretty OCD survivalist too, friends and family laugh at my determination. I mean, I’m not overboard crazy with hidden bunkers, but I’ve just been an outdoor survivalist since a kid, hence my question and curiosity.
Anyway live and learn, that’s what adventure is about. With that said I’d make the Lifestraw a permanent part of your kit for multiple reasons. I’d rather have that and trail mix than a sidearm, and I am a fellow carrier too. Simply put, without water you’re dead. And even slightly dehydrated your brain/body functions decline quickly. Plus one has to plan on the “double back” factor, if the trail is impassable, lose a bike over the edge or injury and have to limp out for 24 hours, just anything. Totally concur with the bivy idea. Between 2 riders it’s so much easier to split things. Personally I would add 1/4” Dyneema rope, headlamp, and a few other items. Also an ER doctor (a client) looked at my 1st aid and said “no, you won’t die from bumps and bruises, you’ll die from bleed outs, and other things” so he gave me a great little triage kit with tourniquet, mask breather, heavy pain meds etc.
But man really inspiring and great video, my kinda deal. I go solo as I just can’t find people with free time and the desire.
Good luck on the next ride.

Of course! I'm stoked you liked the video. I am excited to get the other two out ASAP. The one where were out there all night is a good one I think. Yeah water is huge out there. I had underestimated the impact altitude would have on me too. I had just filmed a bunch out in moab where the heat got to me, which caused me to drink all my water quick, but the altitude caused the same problems for me when I got back to ID. I think I am gonna carry like an emergency pedialyte bottle from now on too. Those are so great when you need a quick jolt to make symptoms go away. I think your client has some good insight into the medic kit too. I'll be keeping that in mind! The rope is a great idea too.

You said that at times that trail was SKETCHY, no, that whole trail was sketchy. Even in my younger days, I would have never taken a trail like that. I made a mount for my Polaris quad, and my TW200, that with the release of 1 stretch cord I could release my chainsaw. On the TW I use a Ryobi 18 volt 12 inch cain saw. I have used it around the house a lot, and it cuts just fine. The Polaris has a regular Dollmar chainsaw. I carry lots of emergency supplies in my quad, but other than a good set of tools, I need to carry every thing else in my Hydration pack on my TW.
I think that I am going to invest in a kick starter for my TW. One thing that I do have installed in my 2022 Polaris 570 trail, my 2022 TW200, and my 2017 RZR900, is an AGM battery. I recently sold my 2009 Polaris 550 Quad, and it still had the original AGM battery in it. The 2009 was my snow-plow quad, and it always started.
I am impressed by the rugged trails that you ride on, and I am also impressed that you had another rider with you on this adventure. I paused the video at 34 minutes to write this comment. I am sure that I will have more to add after watching the rest.

Thanks so much! It is a really challenging are to ride my bike on. People underestimate how much I gotta really manhandle my bike and its a lot of work..

Watching you ride that amount of distance with a steel throat pike sticking out of your handlebars just baffled me. Why you wouldn't have just spun it off before limboing the log escaped me first though.🤷

Your drone should have a setting to set "Return to controller" instead of its takeoff point.

So did you find that Return to Controller feature? I know on my DJI Air 3 I had that feature.
