This guy seems like he knows what he’s talking aboot
@Alan Justin you’re a shit boyfriend if you have to hack in your girlfriend account, to bad it’s fake 🤦♂️
Very well explained Dustin. I own an '07 Ford F-350 semi-bullet proofed by adding the two extra head bolts, new radiator/all hoses, etc. and it ran like a dream with so much more power than before. Two years later I hauled my 43' Jayco RV from Blaine, WA. down to Tampa, FL. and back to WA. One thing I noticed is when I started the engine in cold weather, set the heater on and let it run to warm the cab before driving off...After 20 minutes of this I found the cab still cold and I was losing antifreeze. Then I would drive off and the cab warmed up. I took it back to the people in Bellingham, WA. who performed the work on the engine and after taking a few items off the engine, told me the head gaskets were the issue. After they got the head off they called to tell me all the gaskets were fried. I mean I paid them $12,000. for all that work in 2019 and now I have to pay them as much or not more know just two years later. What caused the engine gaskets to fail, I asked them....They told me the fan motor solenoid failed along the way in my travels. I asked them IF they replaced that part the first time they worked on the engine. Their answer was that they did not. Just a little part like a fan motor/solenoid took out my whole engine. I decided to have them install Engine Oil, Water, and Exhaust Temperature Gauges so I didn't have to rely on idiot gauges. Thanks for reading my 2cents on the topic of Bullet Proofing a 6.0L INSTEAD, I feel like I took a bullet on this one!
So sorry to hear that happened after all that work. How's it doing now after the repairs and gauges added? I never would have had the initial 12k for the first repairs.
My 6.0 F350 is being "bulletproofed" at Bulletproof Diesel" in Mesa Arizona fight now. Had a F250 with a 6.0 that was also "bulletproofed" and was still running well at 996,000 miles when I sold it to a young man in the family and it still runs. I believe that the 6.0, once fixed and maintained is the best engine around.
Hey Michael, how much will the bullet proofing at the shop in Arizona be costing you?
U gota bullet proof it why if it's the best moter ever there is a reason why ford caned it
Holy hell, this guy is knowledgeable. Great info 👌🏻
I would hope diesel mechanics are knowledgeable about most troublesome engine on the market......it's probably their bread and butter. That and 6.4
@@gc99289 The 6.0 is actually a fantastic engine after a few upgrades for reliability.
The 6.4 is garbage. The list of things that break or fail is so long it's scary.
@@dgsprotech985 I have an 05 f250 with only 19k miles. is there anything I can do now to extend the life of this engine before bullet proofing
I used to be a automotive machinists for years and 6.0 heads were always a blast lol. We always put bronze valve guide and all new seats in the heads since they are bad about cracking the seats. Plus always mill them flat with a CBN bit. But pressure testing was always the first thing. I don’t hundres of 6.0 heads and never had a failure.
I’ve been looking at getting a 6.0. I’ve looked on Facebook market place. One of the main thing I see is when people say “fully bulletproofed”. I always ask them what has been done to the truck and they always reply with “deleted and studded”. In the 6.0 power stroke case, that isn’t a full bulletproof. I love how you know so much about these trucks and that you give an accurate run down of what bulletproofing is! Thank you! :)
Agree on what some people say about so-called fully bulletproofed, the previous owner said the same and had the receipts to prove it, than 25k miles after I bought it, part of the #6 injector tip broke off and dove into the cylinder, 7 hours away from home, had to get it trailed home, then borrow my friends truck to go back for the camp trailer, lost my faith in the 6.0 platform! I wish it was more reliable, I really like the truck, but cant get pass how that motor left me stranded and the $3k+ bill to get everything home, not counting the repair costs
@danmckeon6221 that's just dumb luck but I know the feeling recently had a piston ring failure on a hemi that I had rebuilt about 500 miles from home luckily we own a tow truck and my pops was able to drop his truck off and tow mine home needless to say the shop didn't warranty the work so we've been battling it out
@@danmckeon6221 you can look forward to a similar down time and cost situations with Dodge/Ram and Chevrolet diesels too...
One item that could extend the life of a 6Ls that I have not seen discussed in very many videos, is to use the correct or better antifreeze with distilled water in the 6L. I was at a Ford dealer getting the transmission oil and filter replaced when I saw a young new tech performing a radiator flush with a garden hose. An old grizzled tech told him to stop and flush out the radiator again, as he had almost filled it up, then fill up with distilled water and the correct antifreeze. I ask why. The old tech told me the 6.0 water/antifreeze pathways for the EGR cooler and oil cooler would have sediment from hose water build up and block passages. He told me that was one of the biggest issues causing those EGR and oil cooer issues. He showed me an oil cooler and EGR cooler, that were cut in half from a 2004 6L, showing over half of the water flow pathways were blocked with sediment.
I can tell you BOTH of my 6.0 diesels have had exactly the same problems as he describes here. I have had injectors, STC fittings, FICM issues, EGR cooler, etc. fail. I can tell you it takes about 540 lbs. of oil pressure to start the engine from the high pressure oil pump. If one of those fittings leaks (on my 05 they are plastic?) the truck won't start. I called my dad, he came with a rag soaked in starting fluid and we stuck it in the end of the turbo after we removed the air cleaner housing. I hit the starter and the engine gradually sped up and started. I raced to the repair shop. Got the thing fixed. Great video!
Great video. Super informative. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Wow why can't I find a pro tech like this young man ?very kind to help us 6.0 guys out, thanks Jon.
I have a Theory and something you forgot to mention as a part of Bulletproofing. Most times the Head Gasket and Coolant Burping Problems come from trucks that have an EGR Delete. That's because the Electric Cooling Fan isn't coming on (Thus Cooking the Engine, could also be the reason Coolant Clogs the Oil Cooler) because the 6.0 reads the EGR and 6 other Components to bring on the Cooling Fan. The Fix is to install the BPD 6.0 to 1996 7.3 Mechanical Fan Clutch Conversion. Installed that and problem solved, then came all the coolant leaks from the Sinister EGR Delete Silicone Hoses. Also don't forget to check your Starter Bolts. lol
cool love the way u talking about it,iam here Up in Quebec and already know ill be bringing my truck to your garage
He forgot to mention that there was probably 3-5000.00$ worth of arguing with your wife and selling your quad on that table ¡ I just mean mugged my 6.0 !!
exactly! you cant upsell all these "upgrades" and fixes and this and that and the other thing oh yeah youll have a bullet proof 6.0 yet theres zero warranty on it and it cost you and additional 5k if not more! and there still a whole driveline and truck surrounding that which could need attention
high pressure oil pump/regulator replacement had me quoted at $3k. all of this is probably $5k.
I recently found ur new 3.5L EcoBoost video(I know its not this one). Bc of ur clear and concise information, you got a sub! Great job sir. Keep up the helpful info.
Thanks Dustin for the informative video straight to the point.
Hot pockets in my the cooling system. I wonder if there is any lean pockets too. 😀 I know there are some in my system.
Great information man.
This was a very concise and professional video! Great job and great information!
My 05 king ranch I ran for 220,000 miles bone stock using cetane additive from Ford and it was fine when I sold it. I know the guy that bought it and all he did was delete the egr and emissions as well as a turbo back exhaust and it still runs great.
Side note I have a theory that the head gaskets get cooked out of them due to people driving around with bad EGR coolers and running them out of coolant repeatedly but that's just what I've seen a few times with the vt365 in a international 4200 .chassis tuning is drastically different in the 5 tons so that may help towards extended head gasket life also really tough to say
Hey man, unrelated to the 6.0. But you got a nice tool box! Matco 👍 the best
Great video. I have never looked into a 6.0 just because every one I have ever heard says they are terrible. It's good to know they can be made reliable. I had a 7.3 years ago. May be looking for an affordable used diesel again. And 6.0s can be found much cheaper. And I would gladly pay to have this work described to have a great affordable Super Duty.
I am a dodge 5.9 owner and have been lucky so far. It is sure nice to see a young lad who really knows his stuff, and takes pride in his work and profession. All the best. PS yes cummins are very good but have their issues as well.
trans and killer dowel pins...now grid heater bolts and injection pumps...nobody offers a reliable truck engine these days, even on the commercial side
Dont forget to check the lifters, the other not so well known problem. The oil cooler almost always causes all the problems.. or the right foot.
I have owned about Evey Ford pickup diesel 7.3 multiple 6.0s abs a new 6.7. I actually came back to a 2005 F250 6.0 didn't want a payment anymore in the newer truck. And absolutely love the 6.0s we haul drag and show cars around and as long as you mantain them they are great trucks!!
Exactly! Mine isn't perfect, but it's paid for! And it's a great truck, if it breaks, I'll just fix it and keep driving it.
You seem like the most knowledgeable of all mechanics on youtube. I am buying the parts piece by piece and will only need labor, now to find someone I trust to do the work. If I was closer to Canada it would be you, but unfortunately Canada is a long way from me in Mississippi.
its harder to find a mechanic willing to work for labor only. parts markup means your looking for a guy willing to take a paycut, not always the best way to approach a new mechanic. why not just ask the mechanics the price for the job? that's what you want them to do anyways right?
if you do find a shop undercutting all the others, please tell everybody the story.
Great video, but every time I watch one of these type of videos, makes me wish I had never bought a 6.0. But knock on wood I've had it about 3 yrs and have had no major problems, but like he said "its not a matter of will it fail but when will it fail". I feel like I'm driving a ticking time bomb.

Kick in the nuts !!! Always wanted a 6 speed powerstroke but not a 6.0 😢 my old pickup is worn out but still reliable I need reliable daily driver now the price is just ok because it's a 6.0 if it was bulletproofed or a 7.3 it would be a once in a lifetime deal!!!
Yep I recently purchased an 03, one of the first models of the 6.0, and I'm about to do all this to it. Thank you! Wish yall were in Texas!

I spent thousands of dollars at the dealer on my 06 King Ranch. My truck would stall when making a turn. The final blow was I fuelled it at a one lane gas station and she just wouldn’t start. And there was a line of cars behind me. Anyways I bought a F150 5.0L. It was starting to rust anyways. But I did love that truck.
Honestly my uncle has a 6.0 with 178k miles. Everything is original only thing done to it is the EGR delete. Oil and filter and Diesel filters are changed always on time and so far he has no problems with the truck. Idk i guess if you really just take care on point with the Maintenance they work fine

@@boobbutthole9537 have a qualified diesel mechanic check it over thoroughly. If they have done the bulletproofing,, and it checks out, then yes...
You may or may not know that Ford designed a push rod that's slightly shorter for the trucks that had machined heads. The shorter head put more pressure on the rod and caused some wear at the camshaft so they quietly redesigned them to solve the issue. Can't recall where I read that but measure a new and an old one and you'll see a miniscule difference but an important one. Hope that helps. Great video.
We appricate the great added info, yes we were aware of that and keep these in stock @DGs
Also best to do a straight exhaust much better performance and u can’t beat that sound!!
I noticed Autolite glowplugs there..in my experience working on diesels 9O% of glowplug failure issues on ANY diesel have been Autolite brand..use Motorcraft glowplugs on every Powerstroke. The cost is maybe .50 cents to a dollar higher each (at least at my local parts stores).
Champion glow plugs get the job done aswell most important is ensuring glow plug harness is in good shape that is generally the cause of glowplugs performance issues
This is fantastic. I'm really wanting a 6.0 that just popped up in my area. Everyone is telling me not to get it... I wish all of this wasn't so expensive

I have a an 03 6.0l and just replace the Egr cooler and oil cooler and upon further research it was determined that the Coolant and Coolant cap was most if not all of the Problem ,the cap not holding 16 lbs of pressure allowed the coolant and the water boil and to drop all the imperises and it turn allow debris to end up in the oil cooler , so after flushing my coolant system 6 times with the last 2 flushes with denatured water (starter came out 6 six times) heater core included... i replaced all the parts and went back with Peak Global 50/50 mix looking for 157f boiling point and installed a Stant 16 lb cap ,peak global has 0 silica(sand) and has a million mile warranty against corrosion , my truck is happy now and runs like it did when it was new...

I certainly agree about the oil filter comments. I also agree the 6.0 had its share of concerns and the fixes are currently out there to resolve them. You use the term “Bulletproof” suggests (in the USA) you have components from the company Bulletproof Diesel in Arizona. You also show aftermarket gaskets which are known to fail. Coolant is another conversation.
It’s funny, how can you be certified if you work on Cummins, DMax and Ford? Techs who leave the dealer may maintain their ASE certified status. You loose the Certified status from the manufacturer after a period of time. The car company I work for it’s 4 months.
There is enough crap to throw at any of the big 3 and the days of the 12 valve and 7.3 have passed us all. Reality is jerks blowing black smoke ruin it for all of us. The engine killing EGR,DPF,SCR are shortening the power plants life cycle. Where is the outcry for the jackass lawmakers cost us all more money because of these emissions systems?
I read about the possibility of casting sand not being removed from the 6.0 blocks due to some sort of process failure, so I did a thorough flush by removing block drains and repeatedly filling, draining and hosing the cooling system, all while capturing the exiting water and when nothing but clean water was coming out I stopped and measured about 1/2” of casting sand in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. The leading cause of 6.0 failure is overheating caused by lack of coolant flow through the oil cooler and the egr cooler. The original oil cooler/heat exchanger had small enough passage ways to trap casting sand and contaminates (like a filter) leading to severe blockage. After the flush I bought new style oil cooler and a stainless egr cooler and had the exhaust inlet welded shut. Another issue that is a simple fix is the buildup of soot in the oil which eventually fouls the injectors. This can be greatly reduced by switching to a fully synthetic low ash oil. (www.trucktrend.com/news/0610dp-low-ash-oil-news/) No more “stiction” problems. The oil actually stays clear for a long time instead of instantly turning black after changes. I also quit using the Ford Gold coolant due to it’s high silicate content and possible cooler clogging properties and switched to Cat ELC silicate free coolant. (www.bmgs.com.tr/doc/GucSistemleri/MusteriDestek/CAT-ELC.pdf)
My 6.0 had ipr failure, glow plug relay failure, and the egr leaked oil into the coolant (possibly a head gasket issue).
Just throw a bullet proof vest over the engine and call it a day...lol i really do love the way those 6.0s sound with the turbo whistle. And they can make a ton of power, i couldnt afford to own one unless i bought one already that had all the problems fixed and bulletproofed . .

Is it worth a 2004 6.0 with almost 200k miles to be bulletproofed or do I just save up for my next truck?
After listening to several videos on the 6 liter Ford diesel it sounds like the best thing you can do to prevent issues with these engines is not to buy one in the first place and get a reliable gasoline engine instead.
Hey Dustin my son has a 2005 f250 6.0 diesel that has a coolant leak and he just found coolant in his oil it has the whit gunk of doomon the inside of his oil cap. Now my question is, could it be possible that he has a cracked block? The reason why I ask instead of a head gasket blown is since he purchased it a year ago today it has always leaked coolant it leaks only after he has driven ut and it is parked. It does not leak when he is driving it he said. He loses a lot of coolant.
A friend of mine had a 6.0 and had it in the shop so much the shop (Ford) they had to replace the cab bolts because they wore out from having to be removed/replaced too many times
That's because it was at a Ford shop/dealership. Ford techs are told replace parts, not fix the problem. Half of the techs at Ford dealers dont know a damn thing about em. NEVER NEVER NEVER bring a diesel back to the dealership!!
@@bertgrau9246 lol yep. Probably better off. In all seriousness, bring them to diesel specialists shops. You get what you pay for from them. They do far better work than dealerships. The stock bolts are torque to yield. They shouldn't be reused even once. Reusing them nearly guarantees a head gasket failure.
From the interwebs:
A torque to yield fastener (TTY) or stretch bolt is a fastener which is torqued beyond the state of elasticity and therefore undergoes plastic deformation, causing it to become permanently elongated.
How about a 1600 vibration while in park? Bad injector ? Torque converter? Input shaft?

Do you have a "Special Tool" to put on the clamp on the backside of turbo? If not tips are welcome. my vehicle is a 05 6.0 liter F-550. Not bulletproofed that I know of.
What kind of longevity can be expected after completing the 6.0 bullet proofing, with new injectors and flow plugs as per this video ?
My uncle has a bulletproofed 6.0 that's pushing 600k miles. Just take care of it and these things last forever
Buy a complete 6.0 from Powerstroke specialties outside of Atlanta Georgia and call it a day
@@Fr8hustler I have one from them 30k srw f350 I love it no problems piece of mind lifetime head gasket warranty
@@zacharynewsom8153 Okay I’ve been thinking of purchasing a 6.0 and I would love the piece of mind that the work was done right. Was just watching some of their videos and they mentioned that you can put a deposit on one of their vehicles...have you gone that route?
@@Fr8hustler I put a deposit down yes then I put 10 k down and financed 20 through lightstream loans
Sounds great, what is the ballpark charge for getting this done in 2023?
Hey Jason! Sorry we missed this, still interested in getting that quote?
I'm picking up my second 6.0 which will be a 2006 on the 1st and has had been Studded, deleted, IPR remote oil cooler, IPR remote coolant filter, new batteries in November. Is there anything else I should be on the look out for or should I be good?
After watching this video I’ve determined that buying something that was reliable in the first place would be the best option.

You need to run a cooler thermostat as well then factory International motors in other applications ran a cooler thermostat the only reason they have it that hot is for emissions standers that only Ford trucks are liable for By the EPA You can get great aftermarket thermostats 10゚ cooler and with the comment below mine O ring the heads will definitely safeguard anymore head gasket problems along with the studs
I would argue just the opposite. A diesel is a different critter from a gasoline engine and runs better the hotter it gets, right up to the point it melts down, and that has happened with many 6.0’s due to coolant loss and the inadequate factory instruments. I run a 200° Thermostat. Faster warm ups gets the engine up to the magic 185° mark quickly and the computer in closed loop quicker (closed loop isn’t the correct term). An oversized aftermarket radiator will ensure you don’t get too hot towing. 195°-205° (even 210°) is a good place to be for power, economy, and longevity.
What brand egr delete kit is that?
Smart mechanics and smart doctors are becoming rare. Great job.
What does the job cost?

Thanks for the comment :)
