No mention of 2004? What about Fable, Half-Life 2, Ninja Gaiden, Monster Hunter, Doom 3, Killzone, Far Cry, Halo 2, GTA: San Andreas, and Burnout 3, just to name a few. EDIT: Don't know how I forgot about MGS 3 (Thanks, Chocoburger), The entire 6th generation of video games was awesome!
Thank you so much for the memories, as a seasoned gamer this video brought me back to all those fantastic titles I had the privilege to play. Those were the wonder years, for sure.
What about 2000? Deus Ex, Thief 2, Majora's Mask, Diablo 2, Jet Set Radio, MvC 2, Banjo Tooie, Shenmue, Perfect Dark, C&C Red Alert?? I mean great list, but 2000 not making it feels weird.
2000 was a great year but even stranger is that 2011 is missing! I mean it was a better year in gaming than 2013 and 2015 and that's saying something...
+Jai Evans I cant agree that 2011 was better then 2013. I mean release of PS4 and Xbox, The Last Of Us and GTA V. But i agree that 2011 should replace 2015.
+Jai Evans Gaming by and large hit a major financial iceberg with the release of several flop games and two next gen consoles that look to be on their way out come 2018.
2011 was fantastic as well. Games like Portal 2, Deus Ex, Batman Arkham City, Mortal Kombat, Skyrim and the launch of the 3DS. It has been monumental. Another year I loved is 1994, not only because Sonic 3 and Knuckles was there, but some of the best games of the 16-bit era. Super Metroid anyone? 2015 was a good year, but the delays kind of hurt it. I actually 2014 had a better high than 2015, though the quantity of good games was higher last year. I'd probably replace it with 2011. 1999 also, THE DREAMCAST. ... and other games... THE DREAMCAST.
Yeah rock fight was dope, I mean the best stick ball ever came out that year... Child forced labor, death by fever, top hat and monocle, and survive without electricity... List goes on. Idk what else they could need to put this on the list...
Great picks. 1998 was the year I got into gaming with the N64. Those were the days... Getting the brand new Zelda and catching up with Mario, Star Fox, Diddy Kong Racing and so much more. Pure magic.
+Brad Yates What made it terrible? As someone else mentioned we got skyrim, skyward sword, uncharted 3, portal 2, Arkham city, dark souls, terraria, saints row the third, deus ex human revolution, super Mario 3d land, la noire, witcher 2, Rayman origins, gears of war 3, dead space 2, Stanley parable, mortal kombat 9, littlebig planet 2, bastion, sonic generations and mario kart 7 amongst many, many, MANY other amazing games...
Love the PS1/N64/Saturn era, it's importance cannot be over estimated and a lot of the games are still fantastic to this day. I'm still collecting for the PS1 and still finding hidden gems. Good to know GT agree.
Damn this hit me right in the nostalgia. Right now I want to take a month off college and replay all of the classics. XD Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie, Star Fox 64, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, the first 3 MGS games, the first 4 Ratchet games, Shadow of the Colossus, FFIV, all of those great Star Wars games, Resident Evil Remake and 4, Symphony of the Night, Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Half-Life 2 and Portal, and so much more. We've had so much fun these last few decades haven't we? :)
Respect the list GT ! Ya, id like 91 to be higher on the list. Afterall, that was MY year ! I found my love in teh arcades in SF2 ! Which was pretty much the birth of Esports and competitive games, and the heyday of Arcades. And then SNES, my favorite console of all time. I still remember getting it for Christmas ! But i know, i know ! Im an aging genX gamer, and so the perspective on games get larger, so does the opinion base. Big ups BTW for playing the F-Zero music for 91. F-Zero melted my face when i first saw it, and it cemented my need for the SNES ! Also Punch out...that year for NES was amazing ! Thanks GT !
2001 made me feel all fuzzy. i remember playing my gba in daycare with the link cable and all 4 people on 4 swords, or wondering if i was ever going to further in castlevania. good days.
Other amazing games from 1998: Panzer Dragoon Saga, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Einhander, Gran Turismo, MediEvil, F-Zero X, Star Ocean 2, Heart of Darkness, Spyro, Fallout 2, Crash 3, Grim Fandango, Abe's Exoddus, Half-Life, Sonic Adventure, and my all time favorite game, Suikoden II. Such a legendary year.
+BRockandriffs There's also the fact that Bioshock: Infinite does not hold up. Actually, it doesn't hold up as soon as any reviewer thinks back to the 2deep4u plot and realize that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
87' should have been way higher on the list. That year did so much to shape gaming for the years to come. It felt like the start of something completely new.
1977 (Atari VCS) - Combat, Space Invaders, Yar's Revenge 1985 (NES) Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Ice Climber, Excitebike 1989 (Sega Genesis) Altered Beast, Thunder Force II, Super Hang-On
2015 was the best modern year for gaming. The phantom pain was released, fallout 4 (i don't really like it but others do), Just cause 3, Witcher 3, Arkham Knight, Mortal Kombat, Until Dawn, Bloodborne, and even Rocket Leauge. 2015 was the most memorable year for me in gaming, the same goes for the 2010s.
2011 should have been on the list. Notable games: Skyrim Arkham City Battlefield 3 Portal 2 Uncharted 3 L.A. Noire Saints Row the Third Dark Souls The Witcher 2 Skyward Sword Super Mario 3D Land Bastion Infamous 2
Also I know it was the Japanese release but 1987 was the year that started both the Metal Gear and Final Fantasy franchises. My two favourite series of all time.
Wow so many of these comments are caustic. Y'all at GT are the best reviewers I've ever seen at disclaiming that your opinions are opinions, and yet there's so many so p'd off at the lack of their favorite years. Personally I think this list was great, it did a great job of hyping up the gamer in me.
Awesome list guys thanks! I totally agree with the top 3. I would switch 2001 with 1997. And i would add 2010 in the top 10. Can't wait for the most anticipated list for 2016.
2005: No mention of Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Prince of Persia The Two Thrones and arguably the best Need for Speed, Most Wanted 2013: No mention of Bioshock Infinite, Dmc, Metro Last Light, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Batman Arkham Origins
A lot of games in 1998 raised the bar for gaming. And yet, not having 1998 as the one of the best years in gaming is this list is heresy. 1998, 2004, 2007, 2015 AND 2017 are the legendary years.
How wasn't 2017 that good?! We've had: Horizon Zero Dawn, Legend of Zelda BotW, Mario Odyssey, Nier Automata, Hellblade, Nioh, Assassin's Creed Origins, Gravity Rush 2, Resident Evil 7, Yakuza 0, Edith Finch, Persona 5, Sniper Elite 4, Hallow Knight, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Ghost Recon Wildlands, For Honor, Mass Effect Andromeda, Sexy Brutale, Outlast 2, Prey, Dishonored Death of the Outsider, Injustice 2, The Surge, Bioshock Remastered 1 and 2, Darksiders Warmastered, RIME, Tekken 7, Crash Bandicoot Remake, Final Fantasy 12 Remaster, Splatoon 2, Pyre, Tacoma, Yakuza Kiwami, Life is Strange Before the Storm, Tacoma, Divinity Original Sin 2, Hob, A Hat in Time, Elex, Metroid Samus Return, Cuphead, Shadow of War, South Park, Wolfenstein II. And I'm sure I FORGOT A LOT others. Like dude, 2018 doesn't have a fifth of the number of games or the quality. We have what? God of War, Kingdom Come, Far Cry 5, Monster Hunter World, Yakuza 6, Prey DLC and later this year: Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Darksiders 3, Red Dead 2, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Spider-Man. 2018 is a disappointment when compared to 2017.
@@raresmacovei8382 First of all its only august of 2018. And you mentioned tons of games for 2017 but I am talking about good one, like the goty candidats. Why are you even mentioning games like for honor? Also Hob, hat in time, elex... I have never even hward of those. If we are talking about amazing games that will be remembered in future year than 2018 us a clear winner. God of War alone shits on everything in 2017. And rdr2 looks awesome but only time will tell.
+Ice21 that's the period when a shit ton of studios were created and cost of production were not as high as they are nowadays to exploit the hardware of a modern console. That's why Playstation/PS2 had such huge libraries with the biggest variety of games anyone has seen, and maybe anyone will ever see (I know other consoles has great games, but Playstation's catalogue is soooo vast, it shows how creative these years were)
+Ice21 '80s: How can we use this technology to make money? '90s: How can we improve these games to make money? '00s: Where can we cut corners to save money? '10s: What do we have to say to get money?
yea 98 was the biggest year, console games were amazing and PC games were phenomenal with baldurs gate & fallout, I played a ton of starcraft and it blew my mind for what an RTS game could be
1998 is king, but that section needed to be longer to recount even more classics like Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Einhander, Heart of Dartkness, Spyro the Dragon, Abe's Exoddus, Brave Fencer Musashi, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Klonoa, Metal Slug 2, Tomba, F-Zero X, Suikoden II and probably more that I always forget.
The second i heared what the countdown this week was on GT Live, and that nr 1 was undisputed, 1998 was the only thing that came to mind. Glad i wasn't dissapointed.
I think 2010 deserved a mention, there was Super Mario Galaxy 2, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 2, Halo: Reach, Black Ops, and Fallout: New Vegas, some of which are considered some of the best games of all time.
1994 is a HUGE omission. super Metroid, system shock, earthbound, final fantasy 6, contra hard corps, castlevania bloodlines, donkey kong country, sonic 3, rayforce, darius gaiden, hagane, star wars tie fighter, etc etc etc
2001 was a great year but you guys forgot to bring up Max Payne. That game was revolutionary, it had a fresh way telling stories in video games and it basically introduced bullet time to video games 1998 also had Grim Fandango but there's enough games there already

bloody hell, I forgot how stellar 2001 truely was. Gaming from the Snes/mega drive era to 2001 was the age of gaming for me. Great nostalgic vid! xx
2010 deserves a spot. That was such a phenomanal year.
Agreed

+thegeniusgamer1234 You forgot Metal Gear Solid 3, and you have a Snake icon. Come on, man!
FarCry sucked balls tho. Only reason people like the series is because of 3
+Darker xz Sure, the enemies could see you from a mile away, but the scope and the world of that game was phenominal.
exactly what I wanted to say
+thegeniusgamer1234 Doom 3 strayed too far from the series roots to try to become a horror game that wasn't even scary.
Thank you so much for the memories, as a seasoned gamer this video brought me back to all those fantastic titles I had the privilege to play. Those were the wonder years, for sure.
I can't get mad at this list. It's been a great life to have lived through all these years of gaming!
This video is soooo GOOD. Great BGM choices throughout. LOVED the 1987 bit.
Great list! 1998 is still my top year as well, closely followed by 1997. MGS, RE2, and FF7 are the main reasons.
What about 2000? Deus Ex, Thief 2, Majora's Mask, Diablo 2, Jet Set Radio, MvC 2, Banjo Tooie, Shenmue, Perfect Dark, C&C Red Alert??
I mean great list, but 2000 not making it feels weird.

9. 2005
8. 1987
7. 2011
6. 2013
5. 2000
4. 1997

2011 was fantastic as well. Games like Portal 2, Deus Ex, Batman Arkham City, Mortal Kombat, Skyrim and the launch of the 3DS. It has been monumental.

My favorite GT Countdown so far. Great work, guys!
Cant argue with this list really. 97 and 98 were some of my best memories in gaming.
Not gonna lie. I got salty when I saw 2015 pop up right after 91.
Great top 10. I still remembering watching the one you guys did from 2007.. Man I was 16 then...
Glad that 1998 was #1 but how the fuck is 2011 not on this list? That should've made the top 5 easily!

+Up Dog Great name btw
+Thrimo They should've gotten rid of 2002 and replaced it with 2011 and then put 2011 just above 2015 so maybe around 4th?
I'm glad you went with 1998 this time, that was an absolutely magical year that probably won't ever be repeated.
Seeing this list makes me proudly say "Being a Gamer is the Best!!". Gaming for me is the best entertainment ever. And I know I'm not the only one.
Ingenius list! :)
SOO many amazing memories!!
Seeing the seventh year making a blast every decade, next year should blow our minds again!
Too young to have known anything about 1998, but man 2007 was pretty stellar.
Love the PS1/N64/Saturn era, it's importance cannot be over estimated and a lot of the games are still fantastic to this day. I'm still collecting for the PS1 and still finding hidden gems. Good to know GT agree.
2007 Is my favorite year of gaming. FIFA08, Madden 08, NBA2K8, and many others outside of sport, really the year I claimed to be a gamer

i love videogames i cry watching this even if they miss alot games !
2010 was really good too. Red dead redemption, fallout new vegas, battlefield bad company 2, mass effect 2, bioshock 2, the list goes on and on
It personally makes me VERY HAPPY you guys showed Megaman BattleNetwork!!!! Such a good series from the Megaman universe. ^_^
LOVED the music in this episode! ^_^

So much nostalgia, such great years of gaming history :)
For me 2015 was the Best year in gaming, for some it may seem to soon to call it that but in time i think people will look back on it and agree.
"Tomb Raider had turned better than we had hoped"
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Jones has the best narration voice. I love it.
1998 also saw the release of Crash Bandicoot Warped and Spyro the Dragon.
This list was awesome, great video
Watching this gets me all emotional... in a good way.

Such a legendary year.
Fantastic list!! Although one of my minor nitpicks was that you guys forgot to mention bioshock infinite for 2013
+BRockandriffs Only because it didn't get good until Burial at Sea
+BRockandriffs There's also the fact that Bioshock: Infinite does not hold up. Actually, it doesn't hold up as soon as any reviewer thinks back to the 2deep4u plot and realize that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
***** Right, it probably would have been a much better game if it was delayed a few years.
1998... unforgettable

1985 (NES) Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Ice Climber, Excitebike

2011 should have been on the list. Notable games:
Skyrim
Arkham City
Battlefield 3
Portal 2
Uncharted 3
L.A. Noire
Saints Row the Third
Dark Souls
The Witcher 2
Skyward Sword
Super Mario 3D Land

'98 was freaking crazy and kind of a watershed year for gaming. Glad it topped the list.
Spider-man 2 came out in 2004, not 2005. I forgive you though.
2015 was the YEAR OF ENTERTAINMENT. The biggest releases from FILM, MUSIC, and GAMING.
1998 and 2001 are my two favorite years followed by 2007
"... and the JOLLY 'Super Mario 3D World". Thanks for keeping the jollyness alive!
1997-2001 was a golden age for gaming.
Also I know it was the Japanese release but 1987 was the year that started both the Metal Gear and Final Fantasy franchises. My two favourite series of all time.
When that halo music flooded my headphones I almost cried
3:25
Mario 3D world was on Wii U...I guess you guys consider it part of the 7th generation?
I thought that was off too.
That is screwed up.
Great list. My favorite year is 2011, mainly because Skyrim, Portal 2, Arkham City, Infamous 2, and my favorite game LA Noire.
2005, 2007, and 2013 were some great years

Just because of the legend of dragoon battle theme i would upvote this video forever...
1998 was awesome, but I missed Grim Fandango.
And also Crash Bandicoot 3.
Glad I was born in the 90's I don't see gaming ever being as good as back then
I think 2010 deserved a mention, there was Super Mario Galaxy 2, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 2, Halo: Reach, Black Ops, and Fallout: New Vegas, some of which are considered some of the best games of all time.
2011 batman arkham city, skyrim, mass effect 3,la noire,gears 3,dark souls,portal2, mw3, and uncharted 3
Love the Mega Man Legends shout out! :)
if I were in charge the list would consist of the late 90s and early 2000s alone. some of the best games ever came out in that decade.
1998 is the right answer. Good job!
Could you please give us the entire list of the songs used in this video? Those soundracks are awesome!
That game was revolutionary, it had a fresh way telling stories in video games and it basically introduced bullet time to video games
1998 also had Grim Fandango but there's enough games there already
