My grandpa and uncle build Hawkeyes and F-14's with Grumman.
I love this plane. Why don't they have this for the civilian use? It has enough speed for maritime, search & rescue, medivac, air ambulance etc and yet aerial work it's a fantastic aeroplane. It has high wing for great visibility in high altitude and low flying maneuver ability. The ability to STOL with high payload is not found in the civilian aircraft these days, apart from the Kingair range, but still E-2D makes the best tool in all the civilian use.

E-2 Hawkeye- The ETERNAL airplanes!
There's an aircraft called the P-3 Orion that is used by civilian government agencies for oceanographic research and law enforcement purposes. Homeland Security has P-3s with E-2 style radar antennas on them. It might actually be the same system used on earlier E-2s.
I know, I'm just pulling their chain. I worked for NAVAIR for 25 years in the test business. Any upgrade extensive enough to change the model designation of the aircraft would definitely call for a new flight certification.

So what's to test? It's the same airframe as the E-2C. Maybe some weight & balance issues and a shakedown but that's about it. Got to keep the boys in Flight Test from getting bored.
