    Denso TPMS sensors are only about 34 bucks. Just did mine on my '06 Sequoia in January.

    Thank you, again, Peter. Your explanation is so clear and your tone is free of the little bit of sneering my "old school" mind does on this topic, when I have run down the cost/benefit choice to friends or customers.
    Tire pressure is a valuable asset, worth knowing, however one chooses.

    Thank you Peter. I had 4 of my TPMS sensors on my 09 Forester replaced at Costco. They have a pretty good price. One of my stems had a slow leak. I used sospy water to confirm leak. Take care Peter. I'm still enjoying the 11 Sienna XLE. People do not respect people vehicles. When my wife parks it at work I think students intentionally scratch the minivan. WTH !!

    You can also deflate each tire significantly one at a time and then see if the light stays on (instead of flashing) when turn the car on. Using this method I determined the front right tire & spare tire was not detected. i.e.
    1) deflate 1 tire to around 20 PSI
    2) turn car to run (no need to start)
    3) observe if warning light stays on (indicating low pressure) instead of flashing
    4) turn car off
    5) re-inflate tire
    6) repeat for other tires.

      Low Tire Pressure
      Warning Light will come ON whenever the tire pressure in any of the tires falls below
      24 - 27 psi (1.65 - 1.9 kgm/cm2, 165 - 185 kPa).

      I understand this method may also work with Denso sensors if they fail to work after driving when newly installed .

    TPMS sensors can be changed without removing the tire. Break only the outer bead, and compress the tire..

    Properly done and informative video on this subject. I have always placed a piece of black electrical tape over the warning light. I am old school and check my tires visually and manually. The sensors are non-essential and most drivers know when a tire is low or flat. Of course there are those few exceptions that seem to be the cause of the regulations requiring them!

  • @britup1
    @britup1 2 роки тому +1

    If the tire sensors are at the end of the valve stems, you need only break the front bead and push the tire down until you can reach the sensor. The benefit of this is that you don’t need to rebalance the tire. If you break down all the tires, you would want to make sure there is no corrosion on the rim beads.

    Incorrect. The spare tire pressure cannot be measured as the sensor is NOT always on!
    You should know that they go to sleep and only start to transmit when they go above certain speed (15-20 m/h) or inflate/deflate 5+ PSI (or use a magnet in old systems or a TPMS scanner/tool).
    Again, no. The computer does not “reach” the sensors! The sensor is the one not reaching the antenna!
    Several antennas around the car can RECEIVE the transmitted signal from the sensors. Once the battery is low/dead, the antenna cannot receive the low signal.
    You should also know that you can buy PROGRAMMABLE sensors that can duplicate the IDs of the current sensors (no need to relearn them!) and you DO NOT need to take the tire off the rim to install them!
    Oh yes, those Autel programmable sensors are only $30 bucks, but you have to actually know how a system works in order to diagnose and fix it quickly, properly and cheap!

    When I was driving on the freeway one of my tires exploded. Not due to high or low original pressure set. But because a nail caused the puncture which was unnoticed, and could not have been a long distance, the heat buildup caused catastrophic tread separation which ripped the plastic wheel well cover out into the road as seen in the rearview. Luckily the next offramp was less than a mile away and the vehicle was like limped to the offramp.
    In cases like these is why it is important. But $500 or even a discounted $300+labor or a Denso from Rockauto at $200 is still so pricey.
    My advice is to buy a cheapo tpms add on kit with external sensors and a display for less than the cost of one sensor.

    There is a device that you can test the sensor is transmitting. You place it near the valve stem and press a button. It will display if that sensor is working. Yes I would replace all 5 if I knew one was bad. However it might be the receiver which receives the signals and sends the information to the CPU. This receiver is for my truck last I checked $459.

    I replaced all 5 after removing the tape, 50 USD for 5, 3 USD per tyre to fit at a tyre repair place, in the Dominican Republic. If you have ever had a slow puncture that goes completely flat before you notice, it is dangerous, a big car like sequoia can easily get out of control.

    I have seen a video online where someone replaced the battery. Big mess!! He removed solidified epoxy on the sensor. Plus you risk damage to the motherboard chip. Plus if you are poor at soldering, it could potentially fail. Then you seal it up again. In a third world country like the desert maybe this is the solution when parts are unavailable, but like you said the valve and seals are ten years old, you need new by that time. They do have a cheap kit with a new o-ring gasket but you really don't want to lost pressure quickly if a valve breaks due to old age.

    When is too much technology too much?

    • @billsimpson604
      @billsimpson604 2 роки тому +1

      They do that so people don't get on the freeway with 14 pounds of pressure in an unnoticed passenger side tire, and overheat the tire until it fails and the vehicle crashes. Very low pressure causes a tire to flex too much and overheat, and eventually blow, if it overheats too much. Of course, both the manufacturers and dealers make a huge profit replacing the sensors. And many will tell you that you need a lot of other work, even if you don't.

    I drive a 2005 Sequoia which I recently bought and has relatively low miles 137k. I noticed after I drive the car and its all warmed up. When I stop then go to accelerate it kind of makes an odd shake for a few seconds. Then drives normal. My only guess is the driveshaft or something related to that. I was wondering what your thoughts would be.

  • @billsimpson604
    @billsimpson604 2 роки тому +2

    Stick a tiny piece of black electrical tape over the light and invest $12 in a good tire guage from the nearest auto parts store. Keep the $750 you saved for the coming recession, after the Federal Reserve Bank begins raising interest rates to try and reduce the inflation. Some FEMA flood insurance rates are about to go through the roof too. Some people now paying $600 a year, will see their bills go to $8,000 a year, as rates go up 18% every year, until the new rate is reached.
    If you mark the tire and rim, so that the tire can be replaced on the rim at the same rotational position, (match up the 2 little dots you made) you will not need to rebalance the tire, as long as you don't move any tires to a different rim. Mark a brake rotor stud too, so that the tire goes back on the brake rotor at the same rotational position it came off. That way, the tire, rim, and rotor will still be in balance. Unless you change the tire position on the rim, or change the tire rotational position on the brake rotor it came off of, there is no need to rebalance the tires just to install new sensors unless the new ones weigh substantially more or less than the ones you took off, which is rather unlikely. Many aftermarket sensors are junk. They might not work, or it may be difficult to connect them with the Toyota computer. You might want to avoid them.
    You will probably need a scanner to reprogram the new tire pressure sensors, so that they can communicate with the computer in the vehicle. That will probably charge you for doing that too.
    IF you drive a pickup or SUV mostly alone, or with just another person or two in the vehicle, you can lower the tire pressure a LITTLE to improve the ride. (Don't reduce the tire pressure on a car with the rim a couple of inches off the pavement because if you hit a big pothole, you might bottom out the tire & damage the rim or blow the tire.) I run the tires on my Ford Expedition at 28 pounds per square inch. If I increase the pressure to 30 pounds, the ride gets noticeably rougher! At 30 pounds it rides like a truck, which it is, since it is identical to a Ford 150 frame & suspension. At 28 pounds, it rides more like a car. I don't feel every little bump. The only time you need the maximum pressure printed on a SUV or pickup tire is if the vehicle is loaded to the maximum weight it is rated to carry, and you plan to drive at high speed in very hot weather for a long distance. That is so that the tire doesn't flex too much, and possibly overheat. Lower tire pressure punishes the suspension less, because the flex of the tire absorbs some of the shock as you hit potholes. You can't wear out air. But impact shock can wear out steel joints.
