If you're watching the video today, most of it is outdated. The 955 got a double-click map zoom update, you can move widgets with your finger, a full sleep mode with fenix-like features. I recommend the 955 because it's lightweight. The only thing it lacks is a real fenix pro flashlight.

I'm looking into the 955 but the availability is lacking. Same with the fenix7. Online is an option but I'd rather not.

Thank you for this super useful and well put together video! :D
I actually took notes while watching this video and maybe those are helpful to anybody else, so I'll post them here:
    forerunner 955:
    - sleek,lighter design (plastic)
    - 53g
    - 32gb storage
    - Gorilla Glass Dx
    - 5atm waterproof
    - Quickfit wrist strap compatible
    - brighter, contrasty Display
    - training readiness, hrv status, race calendar  update on Fenix planned
    - cant scroll in grapahs, no double tap to zoom, no touch hold for destination on map
    - only dimming in sleep mode
    - no power modes
    - 15days batterylife, 42h gps
    Fenix 7
    - rugged, heavier design
    - 79g
    - 16gb storage
    - “powerglass”
    - 10atm waterproof
    - Quickfit wrist strap included
    - brightnessensor
    - no multiband gps (only 7x and higher)
    - 18 days batterylife, 57h gps
For anyone thinking, he could now skip the video, I recommend to still watch the video, because the nuances explained in the video are important and cant be conveyed via text.

I ordered Fenix 7s solar mostly because I was worried about the maps features discussed in this video. The watch was so heavy, bulky and uncomfortable that I sent it back and got a forerunner 955 and I like it so much more. The inability to double-tap isn't a big deal. Another thing I didn't like about the Fenix 7 (besides the price) was the screen: it's very dim even on the brightest setting because of the sapphire glass. I spent $900 on a watch and I hated wearing it. I'm so happy I went with the cheaper, in my opinion, better watch. Just my thoughts.

I also am sending my 7x back today. Price to features ratio it's rediculous. Not to mention it's not super comfortable to wear. I think this watch should be $700 a most. Not $950. Save yourself the money and get the 6x if you want a fenix. I promise you wont use the touch screen as much as you thought you would. But now that i've found the 955 i'll probably pick up this one. Simply because Garmin will likely support it longer than the fenix 6 series.

Keep in mind that the water resistant “depth” is really referring to the pressure it would take to push water into the watch. This gets to be important for when you are jumping into a pool, crashing a wake board/water ski or getting smashed by a wave at the beach. The depth is just a reference to something easy for most people to understand. That being said, the increase in water resistance impacts more than just divers.

Has anyone tried scuba diving eith s Fenix 7? I know it’s not intended for it and doesn’t have the certification either, but I wonder if it would support diving at 20-30m (~60-90 ft or 2-3 ATM in other words)

    • @_J.F_

@@proyectozonda The Fenix 7 is certified to 10 ATM so if you are diving at 20-30 meters, which is 2-3 ATM, then you are not even near the maximum certification of the watch. That said the Fenix 7 is not a dive watch so I am not sure why you would want to wear it for diving except to tell the time?

One big win of the Multi all super band GPS is when running a specific pace, like for a race or training session. With normal GPS or GPS+Glonass the gauge is all over the place and very hectic. Even when you run the same pace, the watch says you are to slow or to fast. Using the multi band GPS, this changes totally and the gauche is very stable at the pace. You can see the difference also on every run at the pace graph. For me a big winner and training makes now much more fun.

Nice video. I have a Fenix 6x and my wife just bought the forerunner 965. It really depends on how you use the watch. I hike religiously, rock climb, MTN bike, snowboard, etc. I don't like to scratch my watches up so if I'm climbing I take mine off..
but for everything else I wear it. The 965 isn't as tough materials wise but I don't think even with the hard core sports I do that I would break the 965... but you never know I guess...if I fell on a rock maybe. For me it really comes down to battery life and the screen. The screen on the 965 is so much nicer there is really no comparison. It is bigger and significantly brighter... just waaaay nicer. However, because the Fenix screen is dull and lifeless in comparison the battery lasts significantly longer. For instance in gps battery saver mode on my 6x I can get 120 hours of battery life... whereas on the 965 with the same settings you are probably lucky to get more than 35 to 40? That's a night and day difference if you are hunting or backpacking in the woods for several days and need to find your way back. If you are just a day hike you are probably fine with less hours but a real outdoorsman will want to Fenix. Again I love the screen on the 965 way more and would probably switch to one if the battery on the 965 lasted much longer..

Very helpful because I was originally looking at Fenix 7 for the self contained mapping and I am glad to see that the FR is essentially the same (I can live without the extra gesture feature). Thanks for that descriptive info which you can't get from the advertising materials. Actually an easy solution for me. The armor-piercing security of the Fenix 7 is redundant. Anyway, in two or three years there will be a new model that you want to buy. Wearing 955 on the hand, we get a more comfortable watch. Fenix 7 is worth taking only for those who like big iron "tactical" watches or just a military man, then yes. For sports and the city, of course, 955.

Great comparison Dave! I just wish the 955 would do a quick fit strap. I've also noticed some very weird differences like the navigation one you mentioned here. WTF? I don't under stand why on earth Garmin would have a different code base for these functions. Wouldn't they have the same base code and then branches for all the different watches types? If they want to pull in maps / navigation, pull and merge that code then run testing. It seems like there'd more work to do these things differently. One day I'll interview a Garmin engineer . . . some day I'll get answers 🤦‍♂

as always, fantastic review. some comments and experiences to share:
    - i speculate that the backlight is inferior on the 7X is due to the sapphire lens with its lower transmission of light.
    - while sapphire is nice, i have had great luck adding a tempered glass protector to all my Forerunners including my 955 Solar
    - i too am puzzled by the lack of so many touch based features on the 955 solar, most notably the maps, and also wish i had things like the advanced power management modes and more detailed glances/widgets. with the 955 Solar, the solar widget is really lobotomized...it doesn't tell the user of any cumulative solar insolation for the day like it does on the Fenix 7
all that being said, the 955 is still the right watch for me. i had been lusting for the Fenix 7/Epix2 since it was released, but i didn't want the added weight for a 24/7 watch. i was happily surprised by the price point the 955 and 955 Solar came in at. i originally bough the Solar model because the small potential battery endurance, but mostly because i felt the solar ring would offset the broad black bezel. after having the watch for a month, i can say the Solar has the potential to make a real world difference if you spend significant time outside (or driving) as i found out while on vacation. and while the solar ring was distracting to me initially (due to its reflective nature), in the end, it met my initial goal of minimizing the look of the bezel.
fingers crossed that some of these Fenix 7 features will make their way to the FR955 (at least the map gestures), but not holding my breathe...

The fenix 7x sapphire solar watch has a major drawback, the screen in the menu as well as the messages that arrive when the phone is connected to the watch are set to black background and pale blue text (due to the poor finish of the sapphire glass, there is no white color, but pale blue color) and that text is hard to read. There is no option like on older models of garmin watches to change the background to be white or pale gray and the text to be black, which would be more legible. (Inverter color or display color setting). As soon as you sweat a little around your eyes during activities, you can't see clearly, or if you have a smaller (+ eye diopter) for reading, which most people over 40 have the same problem, you strain to read what is written on the screen. Otherwise, the watch is excellently made, but this problem with the screen and the lack of an option to set the background to be white or gray and the text to be black, which is more pleasant and legible for the eye, makes the garmin fenix 7x sapphire solar watch unusable for many people and if not documents in some software update the watch is a complete and utter failure. I found a lot of the same comments in several forums which says that the problem is not innocuous.

I’ve just upgraded from the old SQ to the Fenix 7 Solar Sapphire. I was considering the FR955 and the Epix 2 but ended up with the Fenix 7. The reason I decided against the FR955 was basically that everything is plastic and while I do look after my things you cannot avoid knocking your watch on stuff, and gorilla glass will scratch fairly easily in my opinion. If they made a steel or titanium version with sapphire glass then that would be different, but then it would cost the same as the Fenix 7 I ended up getting. The Epix 2 just ended up getting too expensive in the sapphire version, and then there is the shorter battery life
The Fenix 7 display was a ‘disappointment’ when coming from an LCD display but I very quickly got used to that and love the fact that it is always on. It is perfectly clear to read the data outdoors in daylight, which is how I will mainly be using this watch. Indoors, and in darkness, the backlit screen works fine too (press button or use gesture) but not as crisp and clear as when outdoors in daylight. The Epix 2 is very obviously a much better display, but if using it often the battery life does become an issue. I tend to do about 2 hours of activity at least 5 days a week, and that does bring down the battery life a lot. For that reason I am glad I got the Fenix 7. I would have gone for the 7X version but my wrist is not that big, and the regular sized 7 is just perfect, but also the biggest I would want.

I think I could probably have just about gotten away with the 7X but it is obviously a bigger and heavier lump to be carrying around, making the heart rate sensor less accurate, and increasing the risk of getting the watch caught on things you do not want to get caught on. I have not at any point wished that I had got the 7X instead but now they make the Fenix Pro and I think they all have the flashlight regardless of size, and a few new features, so maybe have a look at getting a Pro?

Running watch plus bike computer. Helps me to make the decision.

If you are super into cycling I still recommend a bike computer
      A. It saves battery from your watch AND lasts MUCH longer when tracking GPS
      B. It's much easier to read the larger screen by just looking down at the handle bars vs having to mount your watch to your handle bars or looking at your wrist

      @jasboehlke Рік тому

Cycling Computer offers a ton more sports specific detail on a much larger screen, especially given the hours and hours using it. The Garmin 1040 is simply awesome with the amount of data and nav afforded for biking like a smart phone on your bike ;)

Great comparison, one thing I want to point out is I don’t think there is an ambient light sensor because if you turn off the touch screen it doesn’t work or if you place the watch on a hard surface where it covers all light it doesn’t work. I think I only works when the touchscreen registers your palm on the screen.

Maybe? I don't think it does though. On the Fenix you can visibly see a small circular sensor next to the Garmin logo that's clearly the light sensor. The 955 does not have this.

I bought the 955 non solar at launch,in June and buy last Monday the Fēnix 7 solar. The 955 is a great watch, nothing to complain in terms of performance and usage on my everyday use,it handle's everything. Some minor bugs but what electronic device doesn't have?😁 Is light , almost don't feel in my wrist but his plastic look in everyday use,24/7 is not so attractive. That and the software differences you mentioned on your video was the reason why I get the Fēnix 7 solar. And for me,that small differences is not so small in terms of user experience, its more refined. Now i have best of both worlds, the 955 for speed workouts and road races, and Fēnix 7 for my everyday use and trails. My only wish is someday Garmin make possible physiotrue up works on body battery, HRV and training readiness ,that way the information displayed on the different devices matches. I have a similar dilemma. 3/4 of training is running, 1/4 is MTB bike. In winter, almost only running. I don't really need super accurate multi-band and 15h more in Fenix sounds good. On the other hand, 99% of us will not really feel any difference in the battery. My main concern is the battery in the cold. In my old FR 735, the battery normally lasts 10 hours of GPS, but in a light frost only 2-3 hours because I always have the watch on my jacket or bicycle handlebars. Which watch will perform better in light frost - F7 or FR 955? PS I would prefer a clearer font on the data screen because I have poor eyesight.

I wouldn't say it's inferior it's just different. The 955 is basically a Fenix 7 in a plastic shell where the 255 is primarily designed for running activities (though it can do more). If you don't often use mapping/navigation or need the other bells and whistles the 255 is still an excellent watch. The 955 just has better battery life, mapping, and the training readiness feature

Hello - I watched this video to help me decide which watch to get. I had already purchased and was very dissatisfied with the Epix gen 2 so this sealed the deal for me to return the Epix and get the 955. I am an outrigger can paddler, paddling Tahitian va'a. I put my watch a few feet in front of me on the iato (the bar from the canoe to the ama). A black screen on the Epix was worthless for me training in the sun wearing sunglasses and I had "display on" for everything. The amoled times out and dims just enough for visibility to be poor - and I have good vision. Additionally, the options to change the watchface on my watch were not as numerous as the Garmin website states. My list was missing the option to change the background. All I needed was a light background, with the black numbers - but could not change it. Garmin customer support told me that the watch is designed to dim as the brighter light depletes battery. I told them that that brightness was exactly why I wanted the watch and it's on me if I drain my battery and have to recharge. I'm used to charging older devices frequently, After 2 weeks of use, I gave up.
You displayed the activity screen for the 955 and I was sold. I really loved the metrics/data of the Epix and connecting it to the Garmin app on my phone has been a big boost for my training and information for my coach. The 955 data collection should be no different. I just need a good activity screen for training in bright sun with sunglasses and having the unit away from me (not on me).
I ordered from PlayBetter and their customer service is great. I needed a quick turn to get the 955 since I returned the Epix yesterday. PlayBetter sent it out today and I should get it tomorrow night, which is fantastic.
So your plug for PlayBetter is the real deal. Really appreciate your work.
In your reviews if you can mention nuances with how people use the watches that will help consumers. A friend told me they were using their Epix for paddling - but they have the device very close to them on the canoe or they wear it (which can be good if you have "Gesture" on). I must keep the watch further away (my canoe is different).
I'll miss the elegant design of the Epix, however, I need visibility and functionality.

To each their own but I would strongly encourage anyone to check out an epix and a fenix/forerunner side by side in a store before spending $$$. These AMOLED screens are just gorgeous and make the watch such a better experience (imo), better make sure you're not gonna regret getting the old MIP tech. OLED is great but it's not great in every use case. MIP displays still have their place when it comes to power consumption, and super bright sun situations. @@ChaseTheSummit Absolutely. I do see the current situation reverse in the future though. Meaning more SKUs of Epix generation and maybe only 1 size of fenix. Or, if they decide the fenix brand is more valuable, they might just move the oled onto fenix, stop epix and push the enduro as a hardcore outdoor specialist watch. Let's see. I for one am very glad they went the epix route as it makes for a great watch both for outdoor activities and every day life routine.

I believe Fenix 6/7 look cool and might be durable, but the top heavy design is really impractical. It bounces a lot and that decreases the accuracy of measurement. When I was shopping for fenix, I tried 6 and 6s. The 6s is so much more wereable. You can have it on the wrist whole day and night, so you get the full benefits of the Garmin tracking of sleep, stress and recovery. The only downside is lower battery durability, but with 10 days it is still decent.

Hi Dave and thanks for your video. I am really hesitant between those 2 models but Black Friday sales are bringing interesting discounts on the Fenix 7 which seems to have a better mapping feature, one of the selling points for me in addition to the touchscreen.
    My questions are:
    - Maps: I understand that only the higher models (7X, Solar) of the Fenix7 are including Topo Maps. Does that mean that we have to purchase the maps for the standard model? Is it a one-time fee or an annual fee to get these maps? Does that also means that as long (again for the standard model) as you don't upload the maps you cannot use any type of navigation or breadcrumbs feature?
    - Payments: It appears that the Garmin payment feature only works with certain banks with a limited number for Canada. Only 11 banks across all Canada (with either Visa or Mastercard) seem to allow Garmin Pay and banks such as BMO, RBC, Scotiabank or TD do not seem to be among them which very much limits a feature that could be really practical.
    - GPS: How long does it usually takes to get the GPS signal with the Fenix 7?

Depends. Can you afford it? Do you have any issues with the GPS accuracy or HR sensor on the 945? Do you want the new HRV/Readiness features? It's basically all up to you. Personally I think the 955 is superior but it's also more money.

Great comparison Dave. I returned my 955 and went with a 7SS in the end. Very pleased with the updates from old 6 Pro but I am not a fan of the solar ring. BTW what watch do you wear everyday/ Looks like you have a Fenix 6X or 7X nowadays? i keep thinking about swapping out the 7 for the 7X. Great videos...thanks.

How did you decide for it? The FR955 is only €379 discounted here with a special shop, but the Fenix 7 is around €620-720. For me that's almost double the price jus for better battery + better touch + better build? Weight is much more though. Aaah, hard choice.

@@ChaseTheSummit Thanks, I was curious about this. The epix is so good, but at 2x the price for sapphire, ugh. Garmin is killing it with body battery and training readiness. I don't think the new apex, garmins, or aw8 will get close, but I'll try to wait a bit before buying a 955.

What about the phone app and the widgets though? Do you need to be able to scroll through the last 24 hours on the watch or can you just look at the last 24 hours on your phone? Personally I would like to just have it work on the watch, but my wife brought this up because it's what her friends do that have Garmin watches (though I don't know which ones they have). If you are in an area with no cell towers can you still see the information from the watch on your phone? Let's say you're going out with your wife to see a movie, are you going to blind and annoy other people in the theater uncontrollably with either of these watches?

Thanks for this. I just got the fenix and was wondering if I should return it for the forerunner. I hike, and am pretty rough on my body (I'm a klutz), so I think made the right choice. Also, the 7s weight is about the weight of the forerunner I believe, thought it's profile is still much higher

What do you think about the 955 as a hiking watch? That's mostly what I want it for. I want the full blown maps for hiking. I know it's advertised as a running watch for the most part. But I'm leaning towards the 955 over the Fenix because of the size and weight. I want to use it as an every day watch as well.

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  2 роки тому +1

The button thing wild. So many people complain about "mushy" or unsatisfying buttons. I think the Epix and Fenix 7 have the same buttons. I can't really feel a difference but they do feel a little "tight" or sticky in some situations? Like when I'm super sweaty or if its humid. The Tactix 7 probably has the nicest buttons of the bunch which is odd because it's basically a re-branded Fenix 7. I think they used more premium materials in the buttons though. It's very confusing lol.

The same metrics are coming to Fenix 7 and are currently in beta. The 955 is great because of its lighter weight but the Fenix 7 is a tank and super durable. It's really personal preference.

    Hi from Greece...
I have the fenix 6x pro which is a unique watch in all its features, the only problem I see when I run is the gps accuracy, on the map it shows me running on the roofs of the houses and the route is not a straight line but a zig zag .... I'm thinking of buying the forerunner 955 new, only for the multi band GPS. or, garmin fenix 7 sapphire solar (used 3 months in the same price as the forerunner 955....550 euro )...
Has Garmin finally fixed this bug with the maps? this problem is very serious,
is the GPS accurate in this models ? or like 6x pro ?
... what's your opinion ??? I stay with the 6x pro ???... buying the forerunner 955.... or the fenix 7 sapphire solar (used ???)
Thank you very much, I appreciate your opinion and I await your advice
