@@jbepsilon - The problem is that Mirage was hit by at least 20 shells from those M39 canons on the F-5. Something is definitely not correct in the modeling/programing of the amount of damage a 20mm HEAPI can do.
As an Aussie, I have real soft spot for particularly the Mirage III, and the whole Mirage family. Our Mirages did consistently well in exercises against the USAF , USN & USMC aircraft, so it isn't surprising that underestimating one with a good pilot could get you killed. The 30mm DEFA cannon in particular, is a bit like an elephant's foot - once it steps on you, you are officially screwed! There is merit to the idea that you don't count your aerial victories until your opponent hits the ground! ;-)

You'd be surprised how well I actually do, especially in Switzerland, as I have lived there for 3 years ;) It's one of those topics that always have to come back when someone speak about holes in cheese. And if you ever ate a Fondue, you'd know the cheeses in it are different than the gruyère. It's kind of a big deal in the Alpine culture tbh. And it's delicious too, which doesn't hurt either. But about the original comment, I agree that GS did hit the mirage quite a few times, and with anything other than a 20mm on a sturdy plane, it would have been a kill. But the mirage is quite a sturdy plane, and the 20mm are not the most powerful ammo in the range. It is the difference between "throw enough [shells] at the enemy, and some of it could eventually disable the plane or the pilot, and the bigger more powerful calibres, like 23 or 30mm, where the rate of fire is lower, so the hit chances are a bit fewer too, but any hit will be crippling and have a real impact. Different philosophy for doing war : quantity vs "quality" (but I'd rather say Impact in this case) The damage model may be broken, or not, I don't know, but the Mirage should not have lasted so long IMO. Especially considering that it is a single motor jet and smoking very dark. But there have been numerous occasion where planes came back full of holes and still able to carry their mission, especially bombers in WW2. So a hit is not always a guaranty of neutralisation, and sometimes, the bullet just rips on highly angled plate, or just goes through. So, the Swiss cheese plane have more chance to continue flying than the one hit by one or two 30mm shells ;) (yeah, I'm kind of a nerd about guns, ammo and ballistic science, which makes actually great party discussions)

After doing very well at the beginning of the match being invulnerable he quickly ran out of ammo. The map was the ocean map that no re arming hanger. He flew around for the rest of the match trying to crash into the water to respawn with a full load. He couldn’t do it. Ended up loosing. Was satisfying to watch. To smart by half I guess.

You can't knock the endurance of the Mirage in DCS. I once was flying in a sever with a friend (he was in an F14) while I was flying the Mirage, we went after a group of bandits and at some point during the fight, I took a missile and basically my plane was shredded and my radar was destroyed, but somehow the plane was incredibly flyable and because of the Beauty of the Magic 2s ability to lock on through their IR seeker heads I was able to shoot down the remaining plane with with my Magic 2 despite not even having radar. It is a wonderful plane, though don't expect to always survive everything, in my experience unless they kill the pilot or somehow rip a wing/rudder off, don't ever count it out of the fight. More often than not I am dying cause I got pilot sniped with a missile in the face.
Reminded me of dumping 2000 rounds of 7.92mm into the back of an I-16 flying straight and level for evaluation purpose in Oleg's World back in the day :D And then wondering why that thing kept on flying - with all that extra weight pumped into it XD
Someone nerf'd that Mirage. The entire intake path to the power plant was swiss cheese'd by cannon rounds. No more FOD walks if this is how engines run after being shot by cannon rounds.
I've never seen a player use the AI's infamous "infinite loop" in a dogfight before. I was under the impression that it could only be used by entities that did not obey the laws of physics. Fascinating.
The Mirage delta wing design is very strong and it needs a lot of hits to cause it to fail, the F5 wing is the exact opposite, the Mirage was very lucky though.
While true, he's hit the fuselage repeatedly, and somehow despite there being an internal fire for quite a while, the engine, hydraulics, or avionics suffered no meaningful damage. That engine, in particular, should've been utterly shredded.
The Mirage pilot has a DCS cheat code. If I was the Mirage pilot I would've probably bugged out after I saw black smoke coming from my plane. Kudos to his persistence.

l personally really feel the difference btween 20 and 30mm, 2-3 30mm can often be game over in my experience, l often need close to 8-10 hits with 20 mm . The challenge in the mirage, like you said, is getting the rounds on target x)
While the F-5 does have twin 20mm, they still only fire at 1/6th the speed of the m61. So not a lot of lead in that 1 second burst. Mirage has same RoF but uses twin 30mm. Both have slow fire rate, but mirage is throwing much larger lead at the little Tiger.
I think the Mirage's damage model might be a bit too strong. Sometimes for me, even a 9X from the Viper cant kill it even with a direct hit on the tail
I love the details of DCS … the map that they are fighting on is Dubai and used to live in Sharjah (a place close to Dubai) … so I could almost see exactly where I used to live 😂🤣
Mirage's DM is just "broken". You can hit it with multiple hits from a couple of bursts from the Vulcan cannon, and it will still be flying. Happened countless times...

The damage models in DCS are very uneven, quite a few aircrafts in DCS have issues with it, particularly when it is gun/canon damage, hopefully it will be worked on.

Hey, a Brazilian Mirage3 pilot said that his DEFA has "about" 6times the "Power" of the 20mm. So "ALL" you had to do was hit him two more times LOL
Sounds about right. WWII statistics tell that a single 30mm hit was usually enough to kill a fighter, vs. about 5 20mm hits.

A 30mm is 2.5 times bigger in area so the damage is a lot more from a 30mm hit for sure
The Mirage pilot learned how to take hits to non-critical areas. Very skilled!

I suspect shenanigans. That Mirage should have been down multiple times in this fight.
We should review the flight recorder to see if the mirage's nose at any point suggested the following joystick input:

This is totally like warthunder in most ammo belts.. you hit the other guys 100 times and they keep flying intact like nothing.. they fire randomly in your direction once and the first bullet will end you
