I believe that one of the design considerations of the F5 was to use the newer small engines designed for cruise missiles and target drones. It was a cost saving measure.
More weight than cost. The engines were the best available in that size. And given that the F-5 didn't weigh much more than a missile anyway they did alright.
The non eco-saver is the glorious F-20 Tigershark... possibly one of the best jet fighters never produced... As to the F-5 I am learning how to fly her as my next module is going to be the F-4 as I prefer the old school jets and I do enjoy hooning around in the A-4...

Man, that turning circle on the F-5 is pretty great for a plane of that era. That second match it looked like it almost turned on its tail, I'm sure it was perspective but still.
Looove the Cold War,early-gen aircraft and dogfights ! Like you mentioned before Cap', these are real planes that took skill and luck to win as opposed to the best tech toys and BVR. With the EFM and fidelity capable witj DCS for these old birds, it makes for great head to head fights like this one ! ( we still need the F-8 Crusader and Eng Elec LIGHTNING !)
I was actually checking out an F-5 in the war remnants museum in Ho Chi Minh city yesterday. Interesting to see the North Vietnamese narrative on the war even after all these years.

thanks. I just had more time in the seat of the mig-19 than cap did in the f-5. there is a dog fight on the GR2 Chanel that is me and cap going at it for like 15 straight min before someone died. so even win over cap is lucky lol.
The 3v3 dogfights with only 2 missiles available was fun to watch. You should do post vietnam fighters with weapon loadouts limited to guns & x2 heat-seeker misssiles (sidewinders, etc)
I don’t fly the Cold War planes. Regarding this fight. In the Tiger have you considered uncaging your sidewinders? Just a suggestion. The F5 is clearly stronger in the one circle versus this opponent as you state in the video but were you flying at the best turn speed to achieve the best turn rate?
yep. "I can close my eyes and picture chasing Kemo Percival through a very offensive Rolling Scissors only to have him execute the most perfect Pirouette and pass me 180 out, neutralized, with my jaw hanging open. If this had happened just once, I would have chalked it up to an accident of aerodynamics. But time and again I watched as a rare offensive position was eliminated by this impossible escape. When flying by myself, I would practice over and over; 45-60 degrees nose high, 220-180 knots, full aileron deflection, full opposite rudder, stick first full aft then quickly to full forward. When Kemo did it, his plane rotated horizontally, swapping ends in a blink while still maintaining enough energy to continue flying and fighting. When I tried it, following his recipe to the letter, I ended up either mushing through a reversal of direction but completely without airspeed, or rolling sideways and pulling through a slow speed wingover. No help at all." Source: google "Former VFC-13 Adversary Pilot explains how you can fly and fight in the iconic F-5 Tiger II"
Hey Cap, I'm having trouble getting my head around the idea that the plane with the higher turn rate has a larger turning circle. Can you explain that further please?
I believe that this is not a general rule. Let's say an F-16 and an F/A-18 would fly at 300 knots. The Hornet can pull more g's at this speed, which means it can fly a smaller circle. Which also means it even has a higher turn rate than the Viper at that relative low speed. The Viper cannot beat the Hornet at that speed. However, let's assume Viper #1 would fly at 600 knots and the radius of the turning circle would be two times the radius of the Hornet's turning circle (Viper's corner speed is more around 400-450, but to keep the numbers simple let's use 600 knots). Circumference is 2*pi*radius. This means Viper #1 needs to travel twice the distance around the circle, but since it does it at twice the speed it would have the same turn rate (it needs to travel twice the distance but does it at twice the speed). Now let's add Viper #2 which also flies at 600 knots in a circle with a radius which is only 1.5 times larger than the Hornet's turn radius (= Viper #1 needs to pull more g's than Viper #1): the turn radius is still larger than the Hornet's turn radius, but the turn rate would be higher. Viper #2 needs to travel 1.5 times the distance of the Hornet, but does it at twice the speed. With that said, it is not a general rule that a better turn fighter has to be the worse rate fighter and vice versa. E.g. : F-104 Starfighter versus Hornet. The Hornet would out-rate the Starfighter and would fly a narrower circle at the same time. The Starfighter can hold a 7.5 g turn, but it requires a higher speed than the Hornet to pull these 7.5 g's. The Starfighter still looks way cooler than both the Hornet and the Viper 😎.
@@slowhornet4802 That does clear things up, I wasn't understanding the definition of "rate" correctly. Your description of the situation is superb, I can see the circles in the sky. Totally agree, F-104 is one of the coolest planes ever, it just looks like it is coming to kill you!!!!
When I try to understand these things I like to take it to the extremes. F-15 has better overall turn rate than spitfire but can't turn in a tight circle, spitfire can turn in a tiny circle, hence small turn radius.
Simba’s comment that the F-5 is a “compass fighter”, performing best when only elevators or ailerons are applied but not in concert, is not something I’ve heard before. But we did see that period where its DCS model was updated and players were ripping wings off while pulling nearly max G and entering a roll under that high lift load and overloading the higher wing, so to speak. Simba’s referring to something else. Anyone have insight there? Is it because of interference between aileron operation and the tail planes which are in the exact same elevation as the wing?

Soviet trials with a captured South Vietnamese F-5 proved it superior to the MIG-21and MIG-23 in close combat so I don't think MIG-19 is a fair comparison.
MiG-19 would have an advantage 1v1 anyway, but one plane has problems with drag and the other one belongs in FSX. Luckily, this match was pretty even thanks to pilot skill.
